00:00What's up guys, welcome back to The Educated Barfly.
00:07Today we're doing a special episode for you, 10 Easy Summer Cocktails.
00:10It is party season and it is the summer time.
00:13And if you are a cocktail enthusiast like me, you are probably the one that everyone
00:17goes to to create the cocktails for your parties.
00:20So I thought I'd make it easier for you guys this year and give you guys 10 easy, very
00:25refreshing, crowd-pleasing cocktails to make for your friends and then you can be the hero
00:28of all your parties.
00:30First one up, Modern Cosmo.
00:32The Modern Cosmo was created by Tony Cecchini at Odeon in 1988, which is a bar in New York
00:36City.
00:37And it was made globally famous by its inclusion in the show Sex and the City on HBO.
00:42That made this cocktail a household name.
00:46It also was one of the first craft cocktails to use Absolute Citron, which was a new product
00:52at the time that it came out.
00:53All right, let's get into the drink.
00:54First thing we're going to do is one ounce of lime juice, one ounce of cranberry juice,
01:02the original used Ocean Spray.
01:04I'm using Shishi Organic Cranberry Juice, but you can do what you like.
01:09One ounce of Cointreau.
01:13And then we're going to do two ounces of Absolute Citron.
01:16I'm just going to add some ice to our tin.
01:24I always like to give it a little double strain.
01:30And then I do like a little lemon spritz.
01:35And there you have it, the Modern Cosmo.
01:38Next one up is an Ivy Gimlet.
01:39This is a light, refreshing cocktail playing with daiquiri specs, just subbing out some
01:43vodka and putting in a small handful of mint.
01:45First we'll do is add the mint, then we'll do one ounce of fresh lime juice, three quarters
01:51of an ounce of simple syrup, and two ounces of vodka.
01:59Then we're going to take a muddler and we're just going to give the mint a light press.
02:02You don't want to press it too hard because you don't want to make it too vegetal.
02:06Just give it a nice light press to release those oils into the cocktail.
02:09And then all you've got to do is add your ice, and we'll just take a little mint leaf,
02:25give it a nice little slap to release those oils, and just the Ivy Gimlet.
02:34For our third cocktail, we're moving into the gin category.
02:36We're going to be doing a Floradora.
02:38This one's pretty simple.
02:40All you've got to do is half an ounce of simple syrup, four fresh raspberries.
02:44If you have raspberry syrup and you want to just sub out for raspberry syrup, just do
02:48three quarters of an ounce of raspberry syrup, three quarters of an ounce of lime juice,
02:53two ounces of gin.
02:57We're just going to give this a light little tamp to break up those raspberries.
03:02And we're doing a whip shake on this cocktail, so what that means is we've got crushed ice,
03:07and we're just going to add a little bit of crushed ice to our tin to just start the dilution
03:12and to start the chill.
03:13And we're just going to give it like a light whip shake.
03:16Now if you would like to, you can strain out the little bits of raspberry.
03:21Some people don't like those seeds.
03:23Today we're just going to be doing a shake and dump, keeping it really nice and simple.
03:29We're just going to add that into our glass with crushed ice, or pebble ice is what we're
03:37using today.
03:38I like to press it to make it go all the way down to the bottom, a nice little snow cap
03:44on top.
03:45And then we're just going to garnish with a little lime raspberry flag.
03:48And there you have it, my friends, the Floradora.
03:51For our next cocktail, we're going to be doing a fresh berry adaptation of Dick Bradsell's
03:56very popular bramble.
03:58First thing we're going to do is take three blackberries, put them in the bottom of a
04:01glass and just give them a light muddle, just like a light little press.
04:06And setting that glass aside, we're going to do three quarters of an ounce of lemon
04:11juice, three quarters of an ounce of simple syrup, a full two ounces of gin.
04:19And then as we do for our crushed ice cocktails, we're just going to add a little bit of ice
04:25in here, a little skosh, and we're going to give it a nice whip shake.
04:37Add it in on top of the blackberries, top up with crushed ice, and just garnish with
04:48a blackberry on top.
04:50And there you have it, my friends, the fresh berry bramble.
04:54Cocktail number five moves us into the agave spirits category with the highly satisfying
04:58Tijuana Rocket.
04:59First thing we're going to do is one thick wheel of jalapeno and one square of red bell
05:05pepper, three quarters of an ounce of lime juice, three quarters of an ounce of pomegranate
05:11molasses, which is sometimes an ingredient in grenadine, but it's actually a highly concentrated
05:17form of pomegranate, and then two ounces of reposado tequila.
05:23We're going to give these ingredients a light muddle, add our ice and our cocktail, give
05:30it a nice shake.
05:45And there you have it, my friends, the Tijuana Rocket.
05:49For cocktail number six, we're just doing a really refreshing take on a sour with a
05:54mezcal.
05:55So first thing we're going to do is three quarters of an ounce of lime juice, three
05:58quarters of an ounce of honey syrup, and just two ounces of mezcal.
06:01You want to try and use some mezcal that's light and citrusy as well as smoky.
06:07Then we're just going to add our ice, give it a nice shake, and give it a nice little
06:18double strain, and then we're just going to finish it off with a little dusting of
06:26cayenne pepper, the saladito.
06:29Cocktail number seven brings us into the rum category.
06:31We are going to be making a cocktail called Ajax Punch.
06:33I love this type of cocktail because it's built right in the glass.
06:37So the first thing we're going to do is just a couple of watermelon and cucumber slices,
06:41just a small handful.
06:43We're going to add three quarters of an ounce of lime juice, and a quarter ounce of simple
06:50syrup, and then we're going to give it a little muddle until everything is juiced down in
06:57there, and I like to give it just like a little stir as well to make sure everything's combined.
07:08Then we're going to add one and a half ounces of white rum, add our ice cubes, and then
07:15we're just going to top it off with sparkling wine or Prosecco.
07:24Another light little stir, and then we're just going to garnish with a little basil
07:33and watermelon wheel, or like watermelon half wedge.
07:38There you have it, my friends, the Ajax Punch.
07:40All right, next cocktail up is a super easy one, Dark and Stormy.
07:45This one you can build in the glass.
07:46Just three quarters of an ounce of lime juice, and I like to build this a really specific
07:51way, and then I add my ice, top it up with ginger beer, and then two ounces of Gosling's
08:04Black Seal Rum, and I just like to layer that on top.
08:10Now when you go to drink this, you're going to have to mix it, but for presentation, this
08:14is beautiful.
08:15There you have it, the Dark and Stormy.
08:17Next up, we've got a Mamie Taylor.
08:19This cocktail is just one that you can throw, again, you can just throw it together.
08:22First thing we're going to do is three quarters of an ounce of lime juice, and we're doing
08:26two ounces of blended scotch.
08:29We're going to add our ice, try not to spill too much, and then just chop it up with ginger
08:36beer, and then we're just going to garnish it with a lime wheel, the Mamie Taylor.
08:43All right, and for the last cocktail, we're going to be making a Pimm's No. 1 Cup.
08:47First thing we're going to do is just a little handful of mint in the bottom of the glass,
08:53and then we're going to add our citrus, and then we're going to add cucumber slices on
08:57top.
08:58Basically, what you want to do is you want to separate the muddler from the mint just
09:03so that you don't shred it, and just give it a nice press.
09:09Next thing we're going to do is just add two ounces of Pimm's No. 1, and we're just going
09:13to add our ice, and then top it off with ginger beer.
09:25I made this little mint sprig.
09:26We're just going to garnish with a little mint sprig.
09:36The Pimm's No. 1.
