What could EU/US relations look like if Kamala Harris became President?
Transcript
00:00As the Democrats' convention takes place in Chicago, some in Europe are already talking
00:06about what a Harris-Foss victory could mean for EU-US relations.
00:12Robert De Weyers from Democrats Abroad is excited about the prospect, but remains nervous.
00:18Although the US election is not until November 5th, for Americans Abroad, the postal vote
00:23is imminent.
00:24There's definitely some nervosity, not only because it's a tough election and it's not
00:32going to be a landslide, or it doesn't seem like it would be a landslide, but also because
00:36we've seen in 2020 with the attempted coup in Washington that it's not because a candidate
00:44wins that it goes smoothly between election day on November 5th and inauguration day on
00:49January 20th.
00:51A lot can happen, so there's a lot to be nervous about, but we're confident that Kamala Harris
00:56will win.
00:57The Democrats manifesto that was printed this week in Chicago is in lockstep with the EU's
01:02vision of the world, and the Trump era is remembered as one of the most challenging
01:06times for the transatlantic relationship.
01:09I think above all Europe wants predictability from the United States, especially at a time
01:13of war in Europe and other stresses around the world, and I think that's what many people
01:18are looking for.
01:19Not everyone.
01:20There will be different views across Europe, of course.
01:22There's different views in the US too, despite the euphoria in Chicago this week.
01:28Donald Trump still has a strong base, and regardless of the outcome, the incoming US
01:32president will have to fix America first, and the EU will have to stand on its own two
01:37feet.
01:38There are things that Europeans will worry about that will still be there, whether there's
01:42a Democratic administration or a Republican administration.
01:45We've seen some of the disputes.
01:46I think on the sort of high political, geopolitical issues, but when it comes to trade policy
01:52and other issues, there are still likely to be stresses.
01:58All eyes on the Trump-Harris debate that will take place on September 10th.
