00:00Japan vs. Germany
00:01Where are which anime the most popular?
00:03I want to answer this question today, right after the intro.
00:13Japan vs. Germany
00:14Which anime are most popular where?
00:16In Japan, the sales figures for the first half of 2019 were published.
00:21So I'm discussing the anime that sold the best in that period of time.
00:26This doesn't mean that all anime had to be released in that year.
00:30Logically, even in Japan, the Blu-rays don't come out first on TV at the same time.
00:35So we still have many from 2018 with us.
00:38So I'm going to go through the list and compare it with Germany.
00:42But since not all series came out for us and the sales figures are not public,
00:46I'm going to use another method.
00:48So I'm just going to classify the anime by popularity.
00:51So how often an anime was watched or by how many.
00:55Of course, I'm not going to look at the anime list.
00:57They are more international and don't focus on the German area.
01:02That's why I'm using AnySearch.
01:04This is a German database where probably many have a watchlist.
01:08So the anime entries they have seen.
01:11And of course, you can't compare sales figures 1 to 1 with popularity.
01:16But that gives us at least a clue.
01:18And now, without further ado,
01:20let's start with an anime that is certainly a surprise for many.
01:24The yaoi anime Dakaichi My Number One.
01:27A yaoi anime is about the love relationship between men.
01:30It sold almost 44,000 copies in Japan.
01:34But how did it get to the German-speaking fans?
01:39Hmm, that takes a while.
01:41Oh, there it is.
01:42On place 76.
01:44However, one should say that this is quite remarkable for a yaoi anime.
01:48These series are classically more aimed at a female target audience.
01:53And these anime usually never show up far at the top.
01:56However, you can be deceived a little by place 76.
01:59Because this is the most popular anime at Wakanim.
02:02There you can also watch it for free with German subtitles.
02:06Also on YouTube, the clips went through the roof.
02:08One even has 400,000 views.
02:11Unbelievable if you consider that others are only in the lower thousand range.
02:16Let's continue with the next one.
02:17A short anime from the last spring season, Mysteria Friends.
02:21This one sold a whole 48,000 copies.
02:25Not much more than Dakaichi.
02:27That this series is in such a list can also surprise you.
02:31Because as I said, it's a short anime.
02:33It consists of only 10 episodes, where each episode only lasts 14 minutes.
02:37So it's only half as long as an ordinary anime.
02:40And one would assume that such series sell worse.
02:44Since the viewer does not build a real connection to them.
02:47They are watched on TV and are good.
02:49However, if you do some research, you will find that this is an adaptation of an event from the game Rage of Bahamut.
02:56And this is extremely popular in Japan.
02:58No wonder that there are already several animes about this.
03:01And where does the series end up with us?
03:04It's not that popular either.
03:06But place 45 is much better than the Yaoi anime.
03:10But let's continue with place 8.
03:12Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2202.
03:15This one sold almost 50,000 copies.
03:18There are exactly 49,645.
03:21This will also surprise many at first.
03:24My goodness, I will say that about every place.
03:26Because this is a space opera, i.e. an anime that takes place in space.
03:30Often also with space battles.
03:32Something like that is less popular with us.
03:34Although the anime, at least the first season, also came out here.
03:38As well as Legend of the Galactic Heroes, which falls into the same genre.
03:41In Japan, however, such series are much more popular.
03:44This is because at that time many anime fans were also sci-fi fans and vice versa.
03:49At that time there were also many more of these series.
03:51And when I say at that time, I mean 1974.
03:55That's where the first copy of this now huge franchise came out.
03:59Also, when evaluating the numbers, one must not overlook that this series was not broadcast on television.
04:05So it is only available on DVD or Blu-ray.
04:09As a result, they are of course also dependent on these sales.
04:12So they have to be high.
04:14No one has seen them with us.
04:16At least not the second season.
04:17It only has 40 voices.
04:19Compared to the first season with over 450 voices, this is a significant difference.
04:24Well, it makes sense, since the second season was not licensed with us.
04:28And to be able to classify these numbers a little better.
04:31The very popular anime Goblin Slayer has significantly more than 1,200 voices.
04:35So almost three times as much as the first season.
04:38But let's move on to the next anime, Soku Owari Monogatari.
04:41Also just below the 50,000 limit.
04:43The film is part of the now huge Monogatari franchise.
04:48Unfortunately, we only have the first season and a few films.
04:52That such an anime is still successful after so many seasons is quite special.
04:57However, the first season was also one of the most successful anime in Japan.
05:00So a few should be able to save them.
05:02With us, the film is only on page 2 and thus in 116th place.
05:07Well, not necessarily surprising, even if it ran on the Akiba Pass Festival.
05:11But also to the next.
05:12And now we have finally cracked the 50,000 mark.
05:16And clearly with Mobile Suit Gundam NT and almost 60,000 sold copies.
05:22Well, what can you say? Gundam is just Gundam.
05:24In this anime there is always a war in space, which is mostly disputed by robots,
05:29in which people are stuck.
05:31A few of these series came out with us.
05:34For example, in 2005 Gundam Seed came out.
05:37This was not only very well known at the time, but is also really well rated.
05:42So it is on 69th place in terms of ratings.
05:45Right next to series like Food Wars or the classic Monster.
05:49Or also Gundam Zero Zero was released in 2009 with us.
05:53Also pretty well known and well rated.
05:55But now the hype seems to be a bit relieved.
05:58At least in Germany.
05:59Because there the film received only 10 poor ratings.
06:02On such things you really notice how big the difference is between Japan and Germany
06:07and how much a license costs.
06:09Because Yamato still had 450 ratings.
06:13This one almost none at all.
06:15But now we come to the next anime.
06:16And with that we have already made half.
06:19On 5th place, Zombieland Saga with 63,233 sold copies.
06:25So now everyone can understand that.
06:28The anime was extremely popular.
06:30And in Japan, idol anime is much more popular than in Germany.
06:34Even if it is a bit special with its zombie idols.
06:38But also in Germany, Crunchyroll has pushed the anime properly.
06:42They have apparently put it on the right track.
06:44Because in the German-speaking room, it also has a really high ranking, namely 12th place.
06:48That's pretty neat.
06:50But where we are talking about idol anime right now.
06:52On 4th place, Love Live Sunshine with 63,306 sold copies.
06:58This is a spin-off of the even more popular Love Live anime.
07:01It went through the roof in Japan.
07:03But as I said, idols also have a completely different value.
07:06The CDs of these bands are also found more often in the charts.
07:10We don't necessarily have that.
07:12Sure, we also have girl and boy bands.
07:14But do they get their own series?
07:16Well, at least these idol series are not popular with us.
07:19So this one only has 282 ratings.
07:22Although it was even released in Germany.
07:25Goblin Slayer has more than 4 times as many ratings.
07:27But well, maybe Zombieland Saga has brought a few to the taste of idol animes.
07:32That would be great, because I like these series quite a bit.
07:35Especially the Idolmaster franchise.
07:38But now we are already on the stairs.
07:39And there is an anime that simply has to be in such a list.
07:43Sword Art Online Alicization with 64,107 sold copies.
07:49This is now the third season of SAO.
07:51If you let go of the spin-off GGO now.
07:54It is remarkable that this series has lasted so long.
07:57Well, with the hype that the first season triggered, it's no wonder.
08:01Sword Art Online was also the first anime for many.
08:03Such one always has a permanent place in his heart.
08:07For us, this series is in fifth place.
08:09But what did you think of the third season of SAO?
08:12Super or rather disappointing?
08:13Feel free to write your opinion in the comments.
08:23But now on to place 2.
08:24With 64,259 sold copies.
08:29Dragon Ball Super Broly.
08:30Yes, Dragon Ball is also popular in Japan.
08:32Who would have thought that?
08:33Well, otherwise you would never have produced so many, so long series.
08:37And a movie is of course always a spectacle.
08:40Especially since the animations in these are often better.
08:43Compared to TV series.
08:45Most of the time they are also more epic.
08:46You just have to watch the Detective Conan movies.
08:49They often put another one on it.
08:59The film is also a great success worldwide.
09:01In Germany it is even the most successful of the franchise.
09:04But let's finally get to place 1.
09:06And it will surely surprise you again.
09:09Namely the idol anime of the idol master, Side M.
09:11Oh, you crazy Japan.
09:13Idol anime are thus represented on three places out of ten.
09:16But it is also noteworthy that the idols are all male.
09:20So maybe many would think
09:22that idol anime are made more for the clichéd male otaku.
09:26But this one seems to prove the opposite.
09:28Maybe this series is just for the idol genre.
09:32It was also extremely popular back then.
09:34And also with us.
09:35The new seasons and movies are still released in German.
09:37But whether this anime will ever appear on DVD and Blu-ray with us,
09:42I doubt it.
09:43But you should never, never say.
09:45And with these words I ask you now.
09:47Which anime from the list do you like the most?
09:49And at which location were you surprised?
