00:29Hello everybody, Brendan Julian with you as we dip into the vault for another
00:32Ashes Classic Test Match. This time we go back to Lords the 1961. The five-match
00:37series began with a draw on a batter-friendly strip at Edgburston
00:41when Neil Harvey notched up his 20th Test Century for Australia. Harvey took
00:47over the captaincy from the injured Richie Beno for the second Test Match
00:50with the 19-year-old quick Graeme McKenzie making his Test debut as
00:54Beno's replacement. England captain Colin Cowdery won the toss and chose to
00:59bat first. We join the home side's first innings at Nowicka for 16.
01:07That's a nice stroke. That's four runs down to the mound stand. Sabah row. Misson going down there.
01:16First four of the morning and the England score goes up to 20 for nought.
01:21Colin Cowdery has won the toss for England. This is the 12th time in
01:26succession that England have won the toss and this is the second time in
01:29succession he's been using our lucky Victorian penny we gave him which he won
01:34the toss with at Edgburston. It wasn't so lucky for him there.
01:39McKenzie now to Sabah row. Goes down to Macdonald of Midd Off. There's the
01:46Australian team. A bit short in spin it would appear but nice to see Alan
01:53Davison this morning bowling really flat out. He seems much more his old self.
02:02He'll get certainly two runs there. Harvey chasing it down towards the grandstand.
02:06They've taken two. They're gone for the second. Two more to pull up. Puts him up to nine.
02:11Now England 22 for nought.
02:16Davison to Puller. Oh! Puller bowled by Davison. Out for 11 and England are 26 for one.
02:30Well that was a beautiful delivery and the way that Jeff Puller played at it
02:44it looked to me as if it pitched probably about middle stump and hit and
02:48hit the off stump. There's Ted Dexter coming out. He had a long spell of
02:53bowling for Sussex the previous match. He was bowling yesterday in the nets. His knee
02:57is evidently perfectly okay. Good action though. It's a pretty good shot of that.
03:05Runs very fast down to that side. Of course as I expect most of you know there's quite a distinct
03:17drop from the grandstand into the ground. Here the top of the ground down to the
03:23grandstand in the tavern. Last ball and he's appealed against for LBW and he is out.
03:31He's up a row. LBW, Mackay, 48.
03:43And he's caught playing too early. A slow ball by Misson I thought. Picked up there
04:03by Mackenzie at short leg and there it is England have lost two wickets in two minutes.
04:13A great sentimental moment for him after having been out of the game since the test
04:22match at Kingston Jamaica in February. And that's the end of it. England's score so rapidly changed.
04:46Buller, Bowe Davidson, 11. Sub a row, LBW, Bowe Mackay, 48. Dexter caught Mackenzie, Bowe
04:53Misson, 27. A cadre not out nought, not having received a ball. May not out nought. Well the
05:02Royal Standard is flying at Lord's. The Queen has arrived and before play restarts after lunch
05:08the two teams and the managers will be presented to Her Majesty. And there is Mr. Sidney Webb,
05:17the manager of the Australian team and Mr. Ray Steele, the treasurer and assistant manager.
05:21And then Richie Benno, not playing in this test but captain of course still and I'm sure
05:26Queen sympathising with him about his right shoulder which has prevented him from playing.
05:33Neil Harvey, the captain in this match and his co-selector Colin MacDonald alongside him.
05:39Three old friends and Richie will go along of course with the team and introduce them
05:45in turn. And Alan Davidson who has bowled so well this morning here. Wally Grout is
05:54next, the wee keeper. And then Norman O'Neill. Peter Burge there. That's Bill Lorry. Frank
06:10Misson. Lindsay Clyne who isn't playing this match. Simpson, Bobby Simpson. And Ron Gort
06:19who's not playing. He's had an injury. Red hair he's got. And a sense of humour. And
06:31there is Slasher Mackay. I'm sure Her Majesty will have something to say to him. He's got
06:34such a reputation. And there is Quick. Ian Quick. And Graham Mackenzie. And there is
06:47Brian Booth. And Barry Jarman. And then Artie James, the masseur. And John Cameron the scorer
06:57alongside him. Two very important members of the Australian party.
07:00Off the pad. As you can see here from Eliot's gesture. That puts the hundred up. Davidson
07:20to May. And he's caught behind the wicket. Caught behind the wicket. Very good ball.
07:37Now Australia are really very much on top. 111 for 4. And that's gone down, over the
07:47top. Davidson coming in. Bounding in. And that's a lovely stroke. Played square down
08:01to a deep cover. That's McDonnell running round from third man. They've taken two. Nice
08:08throw. Well. Pitched outside there. You can see where his leg was, about middle of the
08:25leg. And he's out. LBW. Murray LBW, Bo Mackay for 18. England 156 for 7. Trying a Dennis
08:35Compton sweep. And missing. And Tony Locke making a comeback now in Test Cricket. The
08:46next batsman due. That's a nice drive. Well fielded by McKenzie. And that's a nice one.
08:57Off the back foot. Four runs. Well placed between McKenzie and O'Neill. And he's about
09:06the third batsman who's got off the mark with a four today. Peter May had a magnificent
09:09stroke through the covers. It gave him his first runs. And Murray also got a four with
09:14his first scoring stroke. And so did Barrington. So that's the fourth batsman to get off the
09:19mark with a four. 164 for 7 England. No. And he clean bowled him. Leg stump. Couldn't
09:41England 164 for 8. Missing starting his run. No, it's a classical stroke there. Off his
09:52legs. Down to Mackay. Running round. They've taken two runs. No, he took his bat away.
10:09There's a question now whether it's tea time or not. Could be time for one more over. Just
10:18depends what the umpires say when they reach the wicket. Or rather what umpire Eddie Philipson
10:24says. He's the one at the bowler's end. There he is. He'll look at the clock. No, he's looking
10:31round. There's going to be another over. It's a nice one. Only get one point though.
10:39Lorry's down there. Rather squarish third man. So it's tea time. And England scored
10:53tea. 167 for 8. Locke is five not out. Truman is two not out. Here's Davidson now coming
11:00to bowl to Locke. Oh it is good. Oh no, it dropped just short of mid-on. Trying to push
11:08it round to the fine leg boundary. The edge of his bat. And dolled up in the air but just
11:15short of lorry fielding at mid-on. Davidson to Locke. He's hooked that one. And he's out.
11:33Yes, he's out. A short ball which he tried to hook. And it has come off his glove. And
11:43it went straight up in the air and Wally Grout caught him. Yes, you can see he's sucking
11:50his thumb now. It's caught him on the thumb. And that brings England now 167 for 9. Tony
11:59Locke caught Grout. Bowled Davidson. Here we are Davidson to Truman. Well it was a very
12:11confident appeal for a catch behind the wicket. Given in favour of Truman. Oh that's the end
12:21of it. Clean bowled Truman by Davidson. So a disappointing effort for England's batsmen
12:28all out for 206. But much of the credit goes to Alan Davison who picked up his first five
12:33wicket haul in England. Five for 42. Australia's run chase started disastrously with Colin
12:39Macdonald and Bobby Simpson both falling for single figures. The visitors were three
12:45for 81 when the skipper Neil Harvey fell on 27 leaving Bill Lorry to pick up the pieces
12:51in just his second test match for Australia. Oh that's a nice stroke. Coming down to the
12:56grandstand. Fuller won't catch that. Ball to Lorry. His score goes up to 55 and Australia
13:0988 for 3. Oh! There you saw it. O'Neill bowled by Dexter for 1 and Australia 88 for 4. Well
13:34England right back in the game now. Sad blow for Australia and I think the crowd is genuinely
13:42sorry not to see more of O'Neill. They've heard so much about him. Well run. Well judged
13:51run. Murray running in very quickly. It's 100 up now. Taking them two and a half hours
14:05to get. Hard earned runs. And this is Statham up to Lorry. And there could have been one
14:12there. You can see the expression on Murray's face. Carrington's look of disappointment
14:23and frustration. I think Brian Statham you know Jim must have run over a black cat or
14:29something in the last 48 hours. Yes well I think he must run over a black cat every time
14:34he plays in a test match don't you? Amazing how consistently he keeps missing the bat.
14:40Comes in. And that's a good stroke off the front foot. There's Mr Lorry. He doesn't worry
14:49what happened to the ball before. He waits for the next one. That's through. 97. Between
14:59cover and middle. That's a fine stroke. Right off the blade of the bat as anybody can see
15:12looking at their sets. 183 for four. 46 now to Burge. Four for his 50. And he makes a
15:24great crack at that and he's out. Caught behind the wicket. Going for his 50 now with a hook.
15:33The under edge of the bat. And the crowd expressing their relief and pleasure. And Colin Gardner
15:44no doubt Jim. And that goes off the edge. I don't think it was a catch but I was looking
16:01through my screen. Dennis what about you? No no it certainly wasn't a catch Jim it dropped
16:05well short. Fished in front. 184 for five. Statham to Burrell to him. Been on 97 for
16:12ten minutes now. And that's one of them probably two. Saburo running in from long leg. They'll
16:20take two. That's the first ball he's had for three overs which may explain the fact that
16:27he was on 97 for ten minutes or 97 if I was yes. Now he goes up to 99. And Cowdery just
16:39giving a little sign and the field just coming in that yard or two closer in case he tries
16:44to go for a quick single. I think the last time an Australian was dismissed for 99 was
16:50Chipperfield I think in 1934. Isn't that right Worryweather? No he won't get that one. Puller
17:00running in. That's it. That's his hundred.
17:30Raider balls to the crowd. He's hit 15 balls. He's been in for four and three quarter hours.
17:51Truman to Lorry. Dexter fields. Two runs. Truman to Lorry who's just competed his thousand
18:05runs on the tour. Fine stroke. Four runs. Australia with four wickets in hand are now
18:26ahead of England's first things total. Truman running to Lorry. A fine stroke. Passed mid-off.
18:33Four runs. Lorry now 114. And I think he wants a new bat. Or no, no. Mackay wants a runner.
18:50Truman to Ken Mackay who it seems has asked for a runner to be sent out. A real Truman
18:56bouncer. Statham to Lorry. Statham to Lorry.
19:21Statham to Lorry. Statham to Mackay. Fine stroke which is four runs.
19:49Four runs. Statham to Mackay. Truman to Mackay. And that'll go through for four.
20:13About the fourth time that Mackay's played that stroke on the offside and it's gone sizzling through before. Perfect timing.
20:19Ken Mackay and Lorry added 44 for the seventh wicket taking Australia past England's total before Lorry was out caught behind by Ted Dexter for 130.
20:29Now watch this crowd greet this young Victorian as he gets back to the pavilion.
20:59Ken Mackay and Lorry added 44 for the seventh wicket taking Australia past England's total before Lorry was out caught behind by Ted Dexter for 130.
21:14Out comes Wally Grouchen. What a magnificent reception and how deserved. He'd been in just four minutes over six hours. He hit 18 fours.
21:25And well one can't judge it by the figures. It's the real value to the Australian innings which counts. He's held it together completely.
21:32Wally Grouchen fell moments later to Dexter without troubling the scorers but any hope England had of wrapping up the tale before stumps on day two were laid to rest by Slasher Mackay.
21:45Yes and he's hit him there well. And the deep fielder can't save that. That's four runs straight.
21:58Livingworth had no chance with that one. Well there's the result of the day's play in so far as it's gone. Harvey the first out today for 27.
22:08O'Neill bowled by Dexter for one just afterwards. Then the long stand between Lorry and Burge ending not very long before tea.
22:17The new ball taken directly after tea when Australia was still behind. Davidson out to Truman with the new ball.
22:25And then Dexter coming on at the pavilion end when the ball was really almost owed and getting Lorry out at last after six hours batting.
22:34And Grouchen also. Statham then first ball of the day to McKenzie.
22:38Ah! Goodness me. Well now what was that all? There was an appeal from Truman. Yes it was.
22:53A lucky snake. Yes it was off the bat. They've credited him four. The viewers couldn't quite see what umpire Phillipson was signalling.
23:08He was just out of the picture but it was four rounds off the inside edge of the bat so poor Truman's cry was one of frustration really.
23:16I suppose he may have thought he'd hit the pad. Truman to McKenzie. And he's bowled him!
23:21Yes. Well you were telling the viewers yesterday there wasn't much doubt about O'Neill's dismissal.
23:31Dismissal. There wasn't much doubt about that one. Perhaps he played a little bit outside it.
23:49Good hand for him and he's very well deserved. Australia 291 for 9. And the last man in, Misson of New South Wales.
24:04Last ball of Truman's over which Misson's got to try and withstand. He's done that. And so Mackay will be facing Statham.
24:19Now the field is spread to give Mackay one wherever he wants it. Two balls gone. Yes and they take one off the third ball so that Misson's got three to face.
24:47Statham coming in. He's got the look of a batsman at the crease anyway. Statham. The fifth ball. Last ball of the over.
25:05Ah! And he aims and misses. Statham as he comes in to Mackay. I think it's worth drawing attention to the fact, Jim, that Ken Mackay seldom has a field set as deeply as this for him.
25:28Yes indeed. Truman to Mackay. The field exactly the same as it was at the other end. Well he takes a single off the second ball this time.
25:58After him on the leg, outside the leg, Statham.
26:21Yes it looks as though he may want removing this chap. Nice stroke. Beaten lock. And they'll run for two because there's only one more ball of the over.
26:46Oh and he's hit that good and strong and he's got his 50.
27:02So back to back 50s for Mackay after making 64 in the opening test in Birmingham. Australia went on to make 340 in its first innings, a lead of 134. Mackay and Frank Misson rubbing plenty of salt into the wounds with 49 for the final wicket.
27:20We'll be back after this break as England tries to bat its way back into the Lords test of 1961.
27:51Misson from the nursery end to Puller. Puller on 42. Oh he's caught behind the wicket. Not a good stroke by Puller. A wide one outside the Ostum. Puller caught by Grout. Off Misson for 42. England now very much down 67 for 3. Still 67 runs behind.
28:16Captain Colin Cowdery failed again with the bat, just making 7. But from 4th 80, England mounted a recovery behind Ken Barrington.
28:24Caught above. That's gone. Classical stroke. The crowd haven't had a very great deal to applaud from the English point of view today and they take their chance when they see a shot like that.
28:50Oh well Peter May played two of those in the first innings. Couldn't have batted that one. What a glorious stroke that was. Simpson to Barrington.
29:21Simpson to Barrington. Nice one. Well timed. Spotted misfielding there by O'Neill. Just the one run.
29:29That's I'd say one of the exotic ones, would you? He won't catch that. O'Neill throws it back.
29:53140 for 5. England now 6 runs on. Misson comes in. Misson comes in. He's played that one pretty well. Just to show us he's still there.
30:15And he's out. Leningrath caught short leg. That seemed to me to be the wrong end.
30:30Rather a long drawn out score of nil, wasn't it? He was not comfortable against the spin at all in Leningrath. I think Harvey has kept on this side pretty well.
30:41Good forthright stride out to the wicket. And after him comes Brian Bruth of Australia with the dricks.
30:58Good shot for 1. The long leg. Mackay. I wasn't quite sure who it was until I saw his mouth move. He was doing, of course. 147 for 6.
31:19Murray off the mark. He's going hard for a second. And he'll get it.
31:36Murray does well to stop that one. 4 runs up to the top of the field. Short ball and it wandered in. Plenty of fielders there.
32:05Nice stroke. He wants 4 for that. Nice shot by Murray. Misson.
32:20Good pitch. They can't get a second there. Good bit of fielding by MacDonald.
32:35At least I think it was off the bat. Here's 4 runs. And Dowdy's 50th. Well done, Ken Barry.
32:59Well, we've had to wait a long time for the first 50 of the match for an England player.
33:11Misson comes in. And now Murray can take off his batting gloves because he can't play a ball tonight.
33:26I suppose he could if it was a no ball suddenly and they ran.
33:43McKenzie coming up. The last ball. Oh, nearly the last one of all for Barrington. Putting his bat under his arm, gun fashion.
33:51Well played, Barrington. He certainly stuck it well. 59 not out of the close. Murray not out 14.
33:58An England 178 for 6. 44 runs behind. 6 wickets in hand.
34:06Simpson to Murray. It's a nice stroke and he'll go for 4. Beautiful 4. McKay going down there to chase it. No chance of stopping up on it at all.
34:20England 48 runs on now. 182 for 6. Simpson to Murray.
34:38Misson to bowl from the pavilion end. This will be Barrington's first ball of the morning. Misson now to Barrington.
34:52And that one should go down for 4. It will. There's 4. Down to the tavern. Full pitch on the leg stump.
35:04Misson to Barrington. Pad. Davidson running round. They take one leg by. Davidson to Murray.
35:19And they're coming down to the long leg boundary. Laurie the fieldsman is one leg by. Davidson to Barrington. He's out. LBW not offering a stroke.
35:37Barrington out. LBW to Davidson for 66. England 191 for 7. His bat held up high. Just letting the ball hit him on the pads. So this is the wicket Australia were hoping to take early on. And they've got it with the new ball.
36:02McKenzie to Murray. Nice stroke. They could have had a long run there. Misson fielding it. Running away. McKenzie to Murray.
36:31McKenzie to Murray. That's a nice one. Down to the Mackay at long leg. Nice leg glide. Davidson to Murray.
37:01Davidson to Murray. Nice stroke. One run on the leg side. McKenzie to Murray. Attempted a hook and he's out.
37:23Making England 199 for 8. And that is Grout's hundredth catch in Test Matches behind the wicket. And incidentally it's his fourth in this innings.
37:46McKenzie to Truman. He's caught him. Yes, he's magnificent catch by Grout. Truman caught. Grout bowled McKenzie for nought. A really wonderful catch.
38:05What a magnificent wicket. They might well slap him on the back and shake his hand.
38:23They'll take a single there. O'Neill fielding it in the covers. And it's the 200 up. Looks a little bit more respectable. 66 runs on England now.
38:41Taken nearly five and a half hours to get that 200 to give you some idea of the struggle this morning and on Saturday. Misson there on the left. McKenzie in the middle. Simpson at first slip.
38:55Oh, that's one-handed one. That's a bit upish. It goes down to Burge at long leg and Slatham gets one. England 201 for 9.
39:12Down to the covers. A nice stroke. Fielded by Burge. Oh, that's the end of the innings. Lock. Clean bowled by McKenzie for one.
39:32Another ordinary batting display from England. All out for 202. Full run shy of their first innings effort. Graeme McKenzie celebrated a five wicket haul on debut. His figures 5 for 37. Australia's target then a mere 69 to go one up in the series. But if you thought they'd do it easy, think again.
39:52Upish one. It could have gone to hand. Of course it didn't. It's one of the fortunes of war. It's four to McDonald. Australia's nine double figures needing just 59 runs to win.
40:08A double row. Four or five fours. Well, it's virtually all over then. Not out, evidently. Looked close-ish, but there we are. Laurie the batsman. And he got hold of that one. It's going down to Puller.
40:33I was following it down to Puller and it was nearly stopped there by Lock. I was following that one down to Puller and it didn't get to him. That was a magnificent effort, actually, by Tony Lock feeling just behind Square. And it was a full-blooded hook in which he got his right hand to it. And I'd say very nearly caught it.
41:00Magnificent one because he got it absolutely full in the meat of the bat and one was looking towards the long-leg boundary and there it was. Lock had stopped it. Truman to McDonald. That one's four. Right down underneath the tavern. One of McDonald's favourite strokes, that. The square cut.
41:30Oh! Magnificent catch by Illingworth in the gully. McDonald caught by Illingworth off Truman for 14, Australia 15 for 1. Now, that was a great catch.
41:55Balling down to his left. And McDonald out for 14.
42:12He's caught behind the wicket. Line edge and lorry is out.
42:25We're up against a couple of good fighters out there in Statham and Truman.
42:32130 in the first innings in six hours and a bit.
42:53Splendid appeal from the crowd, not from the players. Truman comes in. Four rounds.
43:18Murray, he's had a pretty good test match and good wickets behind the stumps and some valuable runs.
43:31And he's passed it. But no contact. Good ball by Truman. Beats Harvey. Australia need another 50 runs to win. Late wickets in Statham.
43:45Statham coming in now. And there's an appeal for LBW. Rather high, as you can see from Neal's rubbing. Good ball, Jack, I think.
44:01We can have a struggle to get these runs.
44:19Oh, he's bowled him.
44:35Position's not too bright for Australia, Jim, is it?
44:44Verge. Fine applause for Statham.
44:55And he's caught behind the wicket. Harvey caught. Murray, Bell, Truman, four. And Australia are 19 for four.
45:10There's no need to tell you, of course. You can sense it yourself that the atmosphere here is very tense.
45:16And I must say, Jim, Swanton was smiling for the first time for a few days. Nice to see it.
45:21I wish they'd take that scoreboard away quickly. Tell them we've seen enough of it for a while, will you?
45:2769. For new viewers, 69 needed by Australia to win.
45:34Oh, good one. Oh, that was a very lucky stroke off the inside edge of the bat. And it's gone for four runs.
45:41And Simpson, who made naught in the first innings, is off the mark.
45:54Sub a row, moved over from the leg side. That ought to mean two overs, I think.
46:00So there are three short legs, one in front, one just behind square, and one fine. Three slips and two gullies.
46:08And he goes down for four runs, obviously, though. Safely, though.
46:18Three slips, two gullies. Not much room through, but there's room over the top, of course.
46:26Well, did you like that one? No. He waved the one, not that one.
46:38Good ball, well played.
46:45Something pretty dependable and solid about this chap. Plays pretty straight, for the most part.
46:58That's a puller up there, very close, short leg.
47:08He's taken a single on the offside.
47:19And he keeps it up. And now we shall have Statham's last over before lunch.
47:28That gives you the happenings of this very remarkable three quarters of an hour. Statham.
47:40Filling worth the field up.
47:47Well, I think you're right about Simpson, because you could see Burge calling for a single then, and Simpson very quickly sent it back again.
48:08A painful one.
48:13That's four runs. Good stroke, too. Late cut. Shortish ball.
48:20Thirty-three for four.
48:25Last ball before lunch, and he hooks it, and he's caught it. He's missed it. He had it in his hands and missed it.
48:33Locke had a great job to get there. A bouncer by Statham. Burge hooks it. Locke throws himself. Gets his hands there, but what seemed to me to happen was that as his elbows hit the ground, the ball fell out.
48:50And there's the expressive look on the face of Statham.
49:00A little bit of fielding by Truman.
49:11That was a very lucky stroke indeed. Illingworth after it. They've taken two, and they run a third.
49:25Dennis Compton?
49:28Yes, he's not been exactly safe and sound during this period, Bobby Simpson. It wasn't a bad delivery, though, looking at it from here, Jim. It seemed to leave him a little bit, but he's had a very lucky, as you say, existence.
49:46I think Peter Burge, though, impressed me very much. Apart from that one shot with the last ball before lunch, which he tried to hook, I think he's played extremely well.
49:54Very well indeed.
50:01Statham after it. Will they take two? Yes, they do. He throws in wide. Dexter is backing up through on the turn, and they took two runs, and so now Australia are within 13 runs of winning this match.
50:24Last ball of the over. That's a little bit of luck for England. The ball hits the stumps, and they would certainly run one and possibly a second.
50:35There's the Australian score, and for new viewers, have a look down below at the bottom right-hand corner of that board and see when the last wicket fell.
50:43Australia needing 69 to win were 19 for 4.
50:58Wanda Simpson. The newest cap in the side. Puller breaks the stump, but Burge is well hurt.
51:18Oh, and that's a... Curry's caught. Simpson caught in the gully. Failingworth of a ball that's lifted. And so it's not over yet.
51:49Eleven to win. And that's four of them. Leg glance. Australia needing six to win. And there are four, I think. Short ball, and Burge hooks it down to the mark.
52:17Statham to Burge. Two needed to win. And there they are. A fine hook from a short ball, and that's the end of the game.
52:40The run signalled. Australia 71 for 5. And they have won the second Test match held, lords.
52:52As can so often happen in this game, Australia's top order making heavy going of a very small run chase.
52:59The visitors fall for 19 at one stage against the new ball pairing of Fred Truman and Brian Statham.
53:06But Peter Burge's road has lucked to get the Aussies home. The Queenslander unbeaten on 37 in the five-wicket win.
53:12The visitors going one up in the five-match series. Australia, of course, on a mission to retain the Ashes after winning the 58 and 59 series at home 4-0.
53:23Well, I hope you've enjoyed our Ashes flashback. Until next time, it's goodbye.
