Video blog - Using a DIY rain shield over my camera has it's downsides and problems

  • last month
Not being able to access the flip-open display is a problem in terms of checking if it's recording, especially if I hit part of the button and not the whole thing, or I happened to bounce my finger off of it twice (which happened to the last video), or checking remaining runtime (battery status).

Protecting my equipment from water damage is a high priority, and that comes with it's own set of problems.

00:00Hello Dreads, this is Saroot.
00:02You wonder what this fancy gizmo is?
00:06What does it look like?
00:08Hmm?
00:10It's a pop bottle.
00:12Although I've got a gizmo.
00:14You know what it works as?
00:16See that slot?
00:18It's meant to put over a camcorder.
00:20Like this.
00:22Like my Sony.
00:24Or my now retired JVC
00:26that's got a dead display
00:28and refuses to work with a memory card
00:30for some reason.
00:32So, that sucks.
00:34Anyways,
00:36I just thought I'd mention that
00:38and make a short video about this.
00:40The fact that when I use this
00:42when it rains,
00:44when I'm filming something,
00:46I can't flip open the display
00:48because, well, it's not a tripod,
00:50it's high up,
00:52I'm not about to take it off.
00:54Well, it's modular so I can take it off
00:56with my hands,
00:58but then I can't see over the heads.
01:00And the other thing is,
01:02especially when I'm filming a demonstration,
01:04I need to be able to raise it
01:06and view over the heads of the speaker.
01:08But then comes a problem.
01:10When this is installed,
01:12I can't actually
01:14open the side panel display
01:16because my Sony
01:18has a viewfinder
01:20that I can open up
01:22without opening the display
01:24So,
01:26that's a nice thing about it.
01:28This thing, I can't.
01:30Now, besides
01:32the obvious,
01:34uh,
01:36that made me
01:38miss a clip the last protest
01:40when I was filming it.
01:42So, I didn't know the thing was off
01:44or I didn't know it was stopped recording
01:46until I looked at the lens
01:48cap and it was off.
01:50And that shocked me.
01:52I was in utter disappointment.
01:54Well,
01:56I had no idea.
01:58I could have taken it out to check.
02:00But then again, it was raining.
02:02Yes, pouring rain.
02:04So, I couldn't just remove it
02:06and out of the side of the panel
02:08because I would have got damaged.
02:10And you know how I care about my equipment.
02:12There's zero dumps of damage on it.
02:14I care for it.
02:16I don't drop. I rarely ever
02:18happen to drop equipment.
02:20A rarity in that case.
02:22So,
02:24that frustrates me to no end
02:26when I cannot check the side
02:28panel to see if it's recording or not.
02:30Much less view the viewfinder
02:32with this son of a bitch in the way.
02:34Yes, the back piece.
02:36So, it's a very,
02:38very tiny display.
02:40It's literally one centimeter
02:42rectangular.
02:44So, that's
02:46hard to view when you're looking for a piece of plastic.
02:48And,
02:50I'm not about to keep
02:52lifting it off, putting it back on,
02:54and realigning the damn thing again and again.
02:56However, when it's not raining,
02:58that's not a problem.
03:00I don't miss clips,
03:02or I don't miss speeches.
03:04I can actually check when it's actually recorded
03:06or not, just to make sure.
03:08So,
03:10yeah, bit of a disappointment
03:12and an error on that part.
03:14I was not aware
03:16of it when that happened,
03:18and I was real disappointing
03:20to find out
03:22that I missed a seven-minute speech.
03:26Other than that,
03:28just thought I'd give you a sneak peek
03:30into the way I do things
03:32on filming
03:34and making videos, especially in bad weather.
03:36I will not
03:38let a single drop of rain touch any of my
03:40equipment. That's what this is for.
03:42Snow can also be a problem.
03:44I'd have to use this even
03:46in the snow.
03:48I've had to use a Ziploc before
03:50and drape it over
03:52the camera, which sometimes
03:54interferes with literally this much.
03:56So, yeah,
03:58a bit of a problem.
04:00And I had to tape over the zoom thing,
04:02because you don't want this happening,
04:04because that happened
04:06a few times when I was recording.
04:08I didn't know that I literally hit it,
04:10because the one with Sony is so fucking sensitive.
04:12You can literally tap it.
04:14This takes a little while to tap,
04:16but just a slight touch,
04:18and it zooms all the way in.
04:20So,
04:22I don't want that happening no more.
04:24So,
04:26that's why I use this now.
04:28There's a sponge there that specifically
04:30raises it above the microphone that's
04:32on top of the Sony.
04:34This one has it right here.
04:36Left and right,
04:38if you know what that is. That's the microphone
04:40built in. There's a camera shield on top.
04:42This does not have a microphone
04:44external input, so I can't
04:46use it with that. Although,
04:48that does give me
04:50an option to use an external microphone,
04:52but I'd have to poke a hole
04:54into this fucking shield to
04:56use it,
04:58which would be very handy.
05:00Especially if I can't get further into the
05:02crowd. At least I can bring a microphone
05:04further in with me into the crowd,
05:06pending the cord's long enough.
05:08It's a 2.5 millimeter.
05:10Yeah, so,
05:12I've got a bit of options, I just haven't been
05:14using them.
05:16And, I
05:18probably don't find it convenient in that case.
05:22Anyways,
05:24thought I'd make that
05:26mention.
05:28Okay, well,
05:30thanks for watching, and
05:32well,
05:34have a great day everybody. Feel free to subscribe.
05:36There's more videos coming,
05:38when time permits,
05:40when availability permits,
05:42and when I get advance notice.
