00:00For years, everybody told me you should write a show about your mother and yourself.
00:09She was so out there.
00:10Stop telling me how to live my life, you just shut up.
00:13I thought, who's going to watch that?
00:17You're making me out to be some fucking mama's boy.
00:19Then I realized, maybe if he was like a really badass guy.
00:28So what happened with you and the Sopranos, it was like, HBO said, go for it, man.
00:32Well, nobody else wanted it.
00:35David was a TV veteran, but hadn't really directed.
00:37I had no idea what I was doing, but I knew it was going to be about money and death.
00:43Could you have a killer as your lead?
00:46Is there a place for that on television?
00:50I would lay it all out for the writers.
00:52David starts filling the whiteboard.
00:54This thing gets done, then he goes, this is fucking horrible, erase this.
00:58It took us hours.
00:59We said things that nowadays would be frowned upon.
01:02We're writing about bad people, and we got to access those parts of ourself.
01:06The story comes out of those characters.
01:08The garbage business is changing.
01:10Let me pick the energy up, I'm very tired.
01:13Ow!
01:14That stuff is sort of my specialty, because I was from Queens.
01:17Carmella was something that HBO had discussed, but I went in wanting Dr. Melfi.
01:24Mr. Soprano?
01:25Jim had his own way of becoming Tony.
01:28Unless you're really diligent, you can end up taking your work home, and as an actor,
01:32that's not always a great idea.
01:34He probably quit the show every other day.
01:38Did you see elements of yourself in Tony?
01:43The Sopranos really redefine what people are willing and what people want to watch at home.
01:48In that writer's room, we went through divorces, and children being born, and the stuff of
01:53life.
01:55The more I did The Sopranos, I began to realize that the movie never ends, it goes on and on and on and on.
02:05It's always mesmerized me.
02:09How are you doing?
02:10You okay, David?
02:11Yeah, I'm just talking my hat off.
02:12As Tony says, remember when it's the lowest form of conversation.
