00:17Let's take a look at number 10.

00:31Army of the Dead $90 Million This is a zombie heist film where a group
00:35of mercenaries travel through a zombie infested Vegas to retrieve a massive cash stash.
00:41So why was it so expensive?
00:43Well, this is a Zack Snyder film and some directors you just hand them the bag and let
00:47them do their thing.
00:48A lot of the money went to the visual effects, large scale action sequences, and a detailed
00:53recreation of post-apocalyptic Las Vegas.
00:55So was it worth it?
00:57In this case, yes, as Army of the Dead was a solid success for Netflix, getting a lot
01:01of views, and even getting a prequel movie and an upcoming anime series.

01:16The Midnight Sky $100 Million This is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi film about
01:21a lone scientist in the Arctic who's trying to stop a group of astronauts from returning

01:32of money himself, and the film has some pretty nice special effects that were nominated for

01:38As for whether or not the movie was a success, the answer is yes and no.
01:42It was one of the top performing movies on Netflix at the time of its release, but critics
01:46and audiences mostly hated it.
01:48I personally thought it was a decent movie, but seems doubtful we'll ever see a sequel.

02:01Bright $106 Million This is an urban fantasy set in an alternate
02:06present where humans coexist with mystical creatures.
02:09A lot of the money spent on Bright can be chalked up to the big names attached to it,
02:14most notably director David Ayer and, of course, Will Smith.
02:17It also had extensive special effects and makeup and big action-packed sequences.
02:22Bright was critically a flop, but in terms of viewership, it was a massive success, getting
02:27a ton of views.
02:28Netflix called it one of their most successful movies ever in 2018.
02:31It did get a spinoff anime and almost got a sequel, but it was cancelled in the fallout
02:36from Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards.

02:51Triple Frontier $115 Million This is an action-adventure film that follows
02:57a group of former special forces operatives who reunite to plan a heist in South America.

03:09It also had extensive location shoots in remote areas, complex action sequences, and high-quality

03:16Triple Frontier wasn't a huge success for Netflix, but it did manage to be one of the
03:20platform's most watched titles for several weeks and got decent critical reviews.

03:43story of Robert the Bruce, who leads a guerrilla war to reclaim the Scottish throne from English

03:53sequences, detailed period costumes, and sets that recreated 14th century Scotland.
03:58Personally, I loved this film and wished Netflix would make more big historical epics,
04:02but overall, reviews for the film were relatively mixed.
04:05It did, however, manage to find a significant viewership and got a lot of praise for its
04:10epic scale and action sequences, so it seems as if the cost was justified.

04:26Six Underground $150 Million This is an action thriller that follows a
04:31group of six people who fake their deaths to form an elite vigilante squad to take down

04:37Six Underground is a Michael Bay film, another director known for his big budget films, and

04:44It's got high-octane action scenes that use practical effects and on-location shoots in

06:05with a crime family and his connection to the disappearance of labor leader Jimmy Hoffa.
06:10The Irishman was a little different in that a big part of its budget went into de-aging

06:18There was also a big director, Martin Scorsese, and big actors, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci,
06:23and Al Pacino.
06:24The Irishman was a huge success for Netflix in every way, drawing a huge viewership and
06:29also critical acclaim with 10 Academy Award nominations.
06:33The Irishman also proved the Netflix platform can support high quality talent, making the
06:37money an investment that definitely paid off.

06:49Red Notice $200 Million I put Red Notice at number 2 because its budget
06:54was anywhere from $150 and $200 million, but not sure of the exact number.
06:59Red Notice was an action comedy about an FBI agent who teams up with a renowned art thief
07:03to catch an elusive criminal.
07:05The film's enormous budget was due to its star-studded cast, high production values,
07:09and extensive use of exotic locations around the world.
07:13Red Notice was a huge success for Netflix, quickly becoming one of the most-watched movies
07:17on the platform ever.
07:18The combination of star power and high-octane entertainment proved to be a lucrative formula,
07:23making the substantial investment very much worthwhile for Netflix.

07:38The Gray Man $200 Million This action thriller is about a CIA operative
07:43on the run from a sociopathic former colleague after he uncovers agency secrets.
07:48The Gray Man had the largest budget of any Netflix movie ever, and that can be attributed

07:58and big-name directors in the Russo Brothers.
08:01The Gray Man received mixed reviews from critics, but did quite well in terms of viewership.
