00:30Friday in the western German city of Solingen according to police. German police said during
00:36a press conference that onlookers alerted security authorities at around 9 40 pm saying
00:41an unknown perpetrator had attacked several people at random with a knife at the front of
00:46a central square in the city about 25 kilometers 15 miles east of Dusseldorf. Reuters international
00:54news agency reported while citing Germany police that had people who were wounded five of them
00:59seriously. Police added that the lone male suspect is on the run and special police forces have been
01:05deployed to the active manhunt. According to CNN crowds of phone seekers had gathered at the
01:11square Friday to celebrate the festival of diversity a three-day event marking the 650th
01:17anniversary of the city's founding. Police said the attack occurred close to the stage where a
01:22musical act was performing. The premier of North Rhine-Westphalia, the state which includes
01:28Solingen, said the incident struck our country to the heart. North Rhine-Westphalia is united in
01:34shock and grief. In these dark hours the people of our state and beyond are in Solingen with their
01:39hearts and thoughts. An act of brutal and senseless violence has struck our country to the heart
01:46said in a statement on X. Habas Riu, the state's interior minister said in a televised statement
01:53that the motive for the attack remains unclear. None of us know why this happened. I can't say
01:58anything about the motive about the person Riu said. Earlier during the press conference police
02:05spokesperson had said their current assessment is that this was a deliberate attack. Asked by
02:11reporters whether this was a terror attack, however, the spokesperson cautioned that would
02:16just be speculation. I can't say that at the moment. Images and footage from the scene showed
02:22several ambulances and police officers as well as a helicopter flying overhead with thousands of
02:27people gathered along the streets leading to the scene of the attack. This evening all of us in
02:32Solingen are experiencing shock, horror and great sadness. The city's mayor Tim Cosbach stated on
02:39Solingen's Facebook page, we all wanted to celebrate our city's anniversary together and now we have
02:45to mourn the dead and injured. The mayor sends his prayers to the victims fighting for their lives
