Liverpool house used for early Beatles gigs becomes Airbnb

A Liverpool house, whose basement is famous for hosting some of The Beatles' first gigs and which still features John Lennon's name scratched into the ceiling and Paul McCartney's paintwork, has been given a new lease of life, listed on Airbnb. Mona Best, the mother of the band's original drummer Pete Best, opened the Casbah Coffee Club in 1959 and the band went on to perform more than 40 times there. "We haven't gone Beatle-tastic. We've just given a sprinkle of each Beatle in each suite," says Roag Best, son of Mona and brother of Pete, whose father was The Beatles' road manager, Neil Aspinall.

00:00This is the bedroom of the John Lennon Suite here at the Kasbah Coffee Cup Suites.
00:18So if you're a John Lennon fan, I should imagine this is where you want to stay.
00:28This is a replica of the guitar that John used to play.
00:55Here's Pete sitting behind his white pearl drum kit and then the lads are in their suits.
01:15The Beatles started here at the Kasbah Coffee Club, that's where the band formed.
01:20They played at the Kasbah on the opening night as the Quarrymen, John, Paul, George
01:25and a lesser known guy called Ken Brown.
01:28They became the Beatles there, they played as the Silver Beatles, John, Paul, George,
01:33Pete and Stuart, then they became John, Paul, George and Pete.
01:36So as the Quarrymen they played on 13 occasions and as the Beatles I think it was 42 or 43
01:42occasions from basically 1959 through to 1962.
01:47So it really is the foundation block for what followed.
01:53We haven't gone Beatle-tastic, we've just given a sprinkle of each Beatle in each suite.
01:58It was basically, they couldn't believe it, they couldn't believe that they were going
02:02to get access, that they were actually going to get into the house, be able to stay here,
02:09sleep here, stay where they stayed.
02:11So they were really excited about it.
02:13The stars on the ceiling were put up by John, Paul, George and Pete.
02:17They cut these stars out and put them up.
02:20You can see where they've painted over a star that was originally stuck on, but they got
02:24them up in the end and they were done by John, Paul, George, Pete and Stuart.
02:28The silhouette above the fireplace there is a silhouette of John Lennon.
02:33It was painted by Cynthia Lennon.
02:36That's the original stage area, that's where John, Paul, George and another guy called
02:42Ken Brown opened the Kaz Bar on the 29th of August 1959 and the rainbow ceiling above
02:49it was painted by Paul McCartney.
02:52The far ceiling above the stage, that was put up by John Lennon and my brother Pete.
02:58She grabbed hold of John, she spotted it about three weeks later.
03:01It really is, if there hadn't have been a Kaz Bar, there wouldn't have been a Beatles.
03:06It was the starting point.
03:09It was where John, Paul, George, Stuart met Pete.
03:14The five of them came together to form the original line-up of the Beatles and it all
03:19happened here at the Kaz Bar.
03:22It's a wonderful opportunity and I would certainly recommend it to anybody that's a Beatles fan,
03:29especially if they're a Beatles fan of the early days and the origins of the Beatles
03:36and where they truly started, right in the basement of this house.
03:42It's just a wonderful thing that what they've done for this to make it available for Beatles
03:49fans alike to come visit and stay and truly learn the real history.
