Officials were forced to close a Californian beach after sea lions took over the area.

Footage filmed on Friday (Aug 23) shows hundreds of sea lions gathered on San Carlos Beach in Monterey.

00:00Monterey's San Carlos Beach is currently closed due to the large influx of visiting
00:13sea lions.
00:14As residents of Monterey know, this has been an annual phenomenon, usually occurring on
00:18the beaches closer to Fisherman's Wharf.
00:21Our beaches are a rest point for these sea lions between their breeding grounds of the
00:24Channel Islands in Southern California and the waters of Northern California.
00:28They take advantage of the fish-rich, fertile waters of the Monterey Bay before heading
00:32out again on their journey.
00:35We've received questions on when San Carlos Beach will reopen, and we reached out to the
00:40sea lions for a response.
00:47Please remember to stay 150 feet back from these sea lions.
00:51All marine mammals are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and people who
00:55harass, feed, capture, or harm any marine mammals could face a hefty fine or even jail
