00:00motorways are fastest widest and busiest roads but when risks are taken that's one hell of a
00:12near miss laws are broken people are just far too impatient or sheer lunacy takes over
00:19one of the most dangerous clips are probably saying is that motorways become the stuff of
00:26nightmares you just can't be stupid it's just dangerous all-out dangerous in this series
00:38we'll reveal the shocking jaw-dropping and just plain frightening incidents all captured on dash
00:48cam by the public in the UK and across the world where incredibly no one was fatally injured you
00:56can hit the brakes as hard as you want that force is pushing you forward we'll show you our panel of
01:01drivers and driving experts reacting to the mayhem in real time before they reveal what they think
01:08really went wrong some of them have completely failed to look at what's in front of them why
01:14they think things ended in catastrophe the drivers just going too fast for the conditions and why all
01:20of this chaos was almost completely and utterly avoidable it's a recipe for disaster it's like bumper
01:27cars this is how not to drive coming up clapped out cars create carnage oh my goodness that white
01:42car has just exploded driving in the dark causes nightmares now I'll bill see you doing that it's
01:48gonna be blue lights and you're gonna get dragged off to the cells night and roadworks create a
01:53right royal ruckus that white car has gone right into a concrete barrier the hard shoulder of a
02:07motorway is a bit like a toilet at a music festival bear with me incredibly useful but
02:14very bad for your health if you stay there for too long and these next stories perfectly
02:20illustrate the multiple dangers these supposed safe havens compose our first tale takes place
02:29on a highway in Colorado so here we are in the States riding on board with what I think is a
02:36state trooper that's a police officer to you and I so we've got what looks like a fairly routine
02:42traffic stop the driver is sort of gently exited the carriage way onto the hard shoulder he's
02:48stopping and there goes the trooper to have a discussion with the driver I love a good police
02:58uniform it's brilliant I'm in total agreement then but this orderly traffic stop is about to
03:05take a dramatic and dangerous turn oh oh my god Jesus I mean it looked like the minivan was almost
03:18out of control before the impact happened I do wonder if that driver had lost attention to what
03:24they were doing and just clobbered the car in front of them at extremely high speed and caused
03:30huge destruction amazingly no one suffered life-threatening injuries in this incident
03:36look how close this police officer though comes he's walking he's just chatting to the driver
03:44of this he's walking back to his police car and just moments later the cop was bloody lucky that
03:56he'd moved when he did as he'd have been squashed cop otherwise and hats off to him for what he does
04:03next I love the reaction of the policeman rather than going oh my goodness what just happens he's
04:09running over to the occupants of the cars in the crash to see if they're all okay and that's
04:15fantastic skills of the first responders in crashes like this this is why we rely on people like this
04:20on all of our motorways right across the world we're off to Spain next where two tourists
04:31recording this dashcam footage have been forced to pull over due to a flat tire all right well
04:38we're sitting on a hard shoulder nice blue sky now another vehicle has pulled in in front of
04:44them hopefully to offer some sort of assistance hazard lights on starts reversing maybe he's just
04:51picking up this broken-down car or something God driver getting out with a high-vis jacket on it's
04:56going to the boot of the vehicle he's gone out of shot presumably talking to the driver of the
05:03vehicle with the flat tire all seems fairly routine so far but beady-eyed ex-cop Ben has
05:10spotted something fishy so if that were a trained or professional person the one about like that
05:16they would have parked behind the broken-down vehicle not in front of it and you wouldn't get
05:20out your vehicle and walk lay inside as well so something strikes me as a bit off there they don't
05:25like professional people and it's about to get a whole lot fishier another person getting out of
05:32the second vehicle he's not got his high-vis on it's not gonna rob him is it what is happening
05:43here is he nicking the luggage he's always doing what the hell oh my god just look at that that's
05:54incredible the people who had come to allegedly to rescue the people with the flat tire it had
06:02in fact come to steal from them I've never seen all this is this is bizarre and if you thought
06:09this was an opportunistic crime think again the person who posted this video believes the thieves
06:15secretly sabotaged their tires back at a petrol station so the car would be forced to pull over
06:21these criminals are well organized they've planned this carefully they know what to do
06:29the real thing here is the power of the bright yellow high-vis jacket I think people have a
06:38predisposition to assume that somebody who's wearing something that vaguely resembles a
06:43uniform is going to be acting in an official capacity you see somebody in a neatly pressed
06:49high-vis jacket they must be official they must know what they're doing so you listen to them you
06:54trust them what you don't expect is their mate to jump out of the car and nick your handbag so if
07:00you're ever unlucky enough to find yourself having to pull over onto the hard shoulder here's our
07:05panel with some words of wisdom only reason ever you should stop on the shoulder is if you've
07:11broken down there should be no other reason to stop on the shoulder whatsoever and if you do
07:17need roadside assistance get out of your car and climb over the safety barrier and find somewhere
07:22safe to stop if you do find yourself broken down particularly if you're in an unfamiliar place and
07:29somebody does stop to help you it's really important to confirm that they are who they
07:34say they are any legitimate assistance person won't mind at all showing you their ID or allowing
07:41you to verify their credentials with their organization and for anyone thinking of stealing
07:47Ben's luggage next time he's on holly bobs this might make you think again I don't want anyone
07:53to get my luggage they'll be shocked when they see what underpants I wear the mind boggles
07:58coming up carnage on the roads from clapped-out cars and then suddenly a load of smoke Wow huge
08:12impact and the snowstorms causing sheer devastation what is wrong with these drivers
08:29most vehicles under 40 years old require a yearly MOT to ensure that they're fit for the road but
08:37if you thought MOTs were just the way for your local garage owner to generate cash to pay for
08:43their summer holiday think again checking if your car is clapped out or cushy is really important
08:49not just for the health of the car but also the health of your fellow road users we begin our
08:58tale of clapped-out cars in Moscow where it's evening rush hour so here we are in Russia busy
09:06old section of road lots of cars trying to maneuver around not quite sure what we're gonna be seeing
09:13here other than enormous traffic jam well keep watching the white car ahead on the left Sam
09:19because you can bet your bottom ruble you won't guess what happens next oh my goodness Wow
09:28white car has just exploded what on earth happened there did the wheel blow off is that the spare
09:37wheel that just flew out the boots that was like an eject button it looks to me yeah there's some
09:44sort of tank or container that's blown up in the back of this car and you can just see the whole
09:50back end of the car just explode I've never seen anything like that and they've stopped straight
09:57there in the middle of the carriageway now it's just creating chaos fortunately the driver and
10:03passenger escaped the exploding car but what exactly caused the bang sources claim it was
10:10a malfunctioning gas fueling system used as an alternative to petrol whether it's in the form
10:17of natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas converting a car to runoff gas is often seen
10:23as cheaper and more environmentally friendly but it should always be done by the professionals
10:28it's a safe fuel but it has to be properly installed and if you don't install it properly
10:36you're putting yourself a huge risk of an explosion like this we don't know who fitted
10:42this particular system but there's a pretty strong case to ask for a refund there's a reason why not
10:48everyone can do certain jobs there's a reason why I'm not a brain surgeon there's a reason why I
10:54don't fly my own plane when I go on holiday you know we're not competent to do certain jobs and
10:59very important that when you're making these modifications you know what you're doing you
11:03have significant qualifications to do this and if you're not sure take it to someone who knows
11:08what they're doing you can't just bodge it together under the arches without the proper training
11:13because if you do it's all gonna go back next we're off to the USA where a truck laden with
11:23heavy bottles of water heads down a freeway so we're riding on board somewhere in Connecticut
11:31by the look of it big long straight roads arctic truck traveling down the lane he's maybe just
11:37overtaken something he's now moving back to lane one to make himself safe or so he thinks so I can
11:45see the car in front it's just about to go under that bridge quite sure what's gonna happen here
11:50and then suddenly a load of smoke oh wow lots of smoke and as the lorry heads under the bridge
12:03it's engulfed in the stuff whether they've caught fire it's a tire it's really difficult to see
12:10this is never gonna end well you're absolutely right Sam oh wow huge impact Wow although it
12:25results in a rear-end smash it appears the lorry driver had few choices here the driver of the
12:31lorry he just has no nowhere to go there's a car on the left there's a bridge on the right he has
12:38to go straight ahead he can't stop quickly and he's just wiped out the vehicle in front but if
12:44you thought it was the Nissan ahead that was to blame think again real culprit here was a car
12:50further down the highway there was another car involved that emitted that big white cloud of
12:55smoke blinded everybody else and probably not got that far and blown up on their own private accident
13:02an engine failures like that on modern vehicles don't tend to happen unless their car has not
13:07been maintained properly so it looks like somebody's done a little bit of dodgy maintenance
13:11or no maintenance at all and that's resulted in a rather massive accident as a kid the greatest
13:23news you could get was that the school was closed for a snow day but what about the rest of us we
13:29can't just put on our wellies and gloves and head out to make snow angels all day no we've got to
13:35drive on the stuff and that can be terrifying and it doesn't get much more terrifying than our first
13:41clip from Ontario it's two days until Christmas and by the looks of it even Santa will struggle
13:48in these conditions so we're riding down the roads in a snowy day in Canada clearly a lack
13:54of grip I'm assuming looking at this angle it's probably a car that the dash comes in and this
14:01eagle-eyed driver has spotted something up ahead you can see in the fog ahead there's traffic so
14:07he's coming to a stop it appears that the snowy conditions have already caused a multi-vehicle
14:13accident and the motorists ahead can sense this might not be over yet that's why these drivers
14:19are getting out and legging it because they know that when one drivers had an impact like that
14:24here comes the next one oh my gosh Wow I mean everybody else has managed to stop in a timely
14:34manner and these trucks just coming on plowed his way in and just watch that black car in front he
14:39gets away with it in this situation as a truck comes in with all of its wheels locked no grip
14:44whatsoever coming from those tires and unscheduled game of pinball with trucks has begun and the
14:50game's about to get a whole lot worse oh my gosh oh my god is coming in like a battering ramp that's
15:07just horrendous what are they looking at and see the view you've got ahead so what are these truck
15:11drivers that are meant to be professional truck drivers what are they actually looking at there's
15:17other cars as well like there's no way that you would not have seen that but it seems he's not
15:22the only one unable to spot the blindingly obvious oh there's no one here oh dear and
15:30they just keep on coming oh god here we go they're all piling up now Wow when you get this ice on a
15:41motorway and you're coming in at high speeds you just can't stop and more and more cars and trucks
15:47just coming into the accident and just crashing and crashing but the trucks you know they were
15:54obviously going too quick if they were going steady slow and steady wins the race and it would
15:58have won the race in this case in the end an incredible 50 vehicles are caught up in this
16:04pileup oh my god look at that Christ 50 vehicles that is that's not a small number is it really
16:14a lot of them being trucks you know it kind of worries who you share the road with but despite
16:19the mayhem nobody was badly hurt everybody was very lucky in this situation to walk away or in
16:25some cases run away south of the border in the US state of Massachusetts conditions don't appear
16:35to be quite so treacherous or so it seems snowy day three lane or following carriageway but you
16:42can see it's been cleared probably great the visibility is quite decent so it's good visibility
16:48to be fair the conditions may look clear but keep an eye on the dark colored car in the distance
16:53ahead of our driver with the dashcam and here we go something ahead oh what the hell is this ice
17:07and snow off the car in front that's just a sheet of ice maybe because the car in front isn't white
17:13the snow from the bonnet of the car in front has come loose and is heading directly for the car
17:20with the dashcam oh my god oh my dear it comes oh it's just a big lump of ice and snow off the car
17:35from and it's destroyed the windscreen of the car we're riding on board room it's just like
17:41it in concrete it's not ice man look at what it's done to laminate windscreen a car miraculously the
17:47shocked dashcam driver was unhurt and even managed to successfully navigate their way safely over to
17:52the hard shoulder but it easily could have been a different story so the next time your car is
17:58covered in snow just get it off you know don't worry about scratching the roof of your car because
18:03other people and your own safety is more important you know paintwork can be repaired a life can't be
18:08given back next we're heading to Michigan where several cars have already collided due to the
18:18snowy conditions the road is just littered with vehicles that are stranded in the snow that have
18:23skidded off like you can see on the other side of the road over there as well they're just everywhere
18:27I won't be going out if the weather like that and I'm an advanced driver neither would I but a
18:33couple who seem to have skidded off the road don't appear to be anywhere near as concerned in fact
18:38they've stayed in their car to film the whole thing cars coming in home whoa just keep all
18:47there's a big truck piling here whoa whoa right in front of us down in the ditch oh Christ yeah
18:53you want to be getting out of there now don't you despite all prevailing advice recommending
18:58you leave a broken-down car and head to the safety barriers this couple aren't going anywhere in fact
19:04they seem to be enjoying the entertainment they'll be cracking open the popcorn next what are you
19:15doing right get out your vehicle seriously don't sit there get as far away from that vehicle as
19:19possible because they're getting closer and closer look at him it's obvious that you're
19:26gonna get hit he's clearly sitting in a dangerous position get out of the car get out of the way
19:32holy Christ there's five I'm right down there they're just missing our front fender here you
19:37know you've had one go straight past you the warning signs are there get out of there but
19:43get out they don't and it's not long before the inevitable happens oh and then almost immediately
19:53they hit again there's another one oh that was predictable what is wrong with these drivers the
20:03people here just I don't think they're aware of the danger that they're in but even after the
20:08cars are still hitting their car they still seem to not be able to quite grasp the situation but
20:14they're going to get hit more and more they're in serious danger and as the couple carry on filming
20:21the cars keep on coming oh my god that's the third time we've been here so he's been it three times
20:37now and he's still sitting there we've been here for 15 minutes getting whacked there's got to be
20:4250 cars on your man this is terrible there's got to be 50 cars out there this is terrible and you're
20:48still sat there move eventually the cars stop smashing into each other and the couple make
20:55it home to post their video for millions to see and miraculously no one at all was seriously harmed
21:02although I imagine a few cars will have seen better days
21:08and just in case it's not crystal clear already here's our panel with some very sensible advice
21:15when you're in a situation like that put your phone down and get your family or you know people
21:20around you to safety but before you do put your hazard warning lights on and try and give as much
21:26warning to the vehicles that approach as possible and there is one sure fire way of avoiding being
21:31caught up in a driving incident on snowy roads don't go out stay home get some hot chocolate and
21:37get fire on coming up risk takers risking it all it's like i'm not letting you in he's like let me
21:47in let me in not by the hair on my chin chin chin and they're just desserts when it all goes wrong
21:55the driver just did not see the accident coming
22:01so
22:12the people that maintain our motorways are a devoted workforce armed to the teeth with cones
22:18and signs alerting drivers to the roadworks up ahead usually everything goes without a hitch
22:24but not always as these next clips clearly demonstrate
22:32so first we're on the a2 bean interchange in kent where all seems hunky-dory for now at least
22:40more where it's a dry day clear observations lanes ain't too busy got a junction you can exit but
22:48there's a lot of roadworks going on here and it's these roadworks which seem to be causing a problem
22:53for the white car up ahead and you can see he's driving is a rat he's on the right hand side he's
23:00on the left hand side he can't keep his car central at all the driver is kind of focused
23:07on the line that the cones are taking not the line that the actual road is taking they're
23:12obviously not paying attention to what's going on so they're drifting across lane one as this guy
23:17missed his exit
23:24oh god whoa
23:28wow have you not seen that that white car has gone right into a concrete
23:35barrier that impact must have felt unimaginable honestly
23:42thankfully the black car following behind breaks just in time
23:45avoiding a second collision look at the car on the right hand side done really well
23:52to not even hit it as well now all three lanes are blocked vehicles on its roof and there's no
23:57reason at all why you should have gone into that lane there it's a solid white line you do not
24:02ever cross a solid white line no reason whatsoever unless you were perhaps under the influence
24:08the driver with the dash cam reported that the police breathalyzed the driver of the white car
24:13and arrested him on suspicion of drink driving after failing the test to be doing that into
24:20something concrete i guarantee they won't be driving like that again luckily no one was
24:28seriously hurt in this incident including the driver of the black car who checks on the occupant
24:34of the white car i love a hero basically and anyone that wants to help anyone that's in need
24:39fair play to the samaritan look you've got to think it's a fast moving motorway right now to
24:43get out of your car put your own life at risk to help someone else gotta take your hats off to it
24:50a heroic move indeed but one we wholeheartedly wouldn't recommend on a live carriageway
24:56instead get behind the safety barrier and call 999
25:03whilst some people are brave others can be described as uh unobservant at best
25:09take this incident on the a1 southbound near tranent east lothian
25:16so two carriageway fast lane sunny day so roads clear visions clear with no obstructions
25:23up ahead on the left a sign indicates an upcoming lane closure so you can see the road sign there
25:29is saying the right lane's blocked off so that this guy with the dash cams moves immediately
25:34the minute he's seen the sign the same can't be said for the tenacious silver toyota yaris
25:39coming up from behind which is being recorded by the driver's rear dash cam so this driver
25:45is coming down the outside i think i'm gonna make it in front of this truck before those cones start
25:51this car's left it a little late start moving over the cones are now closing in on him and he's got
25:58the lorry on one side or the cones on the other side where are you going there's no way for you
26:03go oh my god you're waiting last minute here aren't you get across
26:13and then he was trying to play chicken with the lorry
26:17what a clown
26:20do you think the bum clenched up when they got to like the red corn area here
26:24and thought there's nowhere for me to go here the clenched cheeked driver has certainly paid
26:30the price for their lack of forward planning this isn't an issue with visibility there's no
26:36absolutely no reason why that driver shouldn't have been able to see that in good time you've
26:42got signs they're always going to warn you you're going to have a 600 yard marker 400 yard 200 yard
26:49so what he's literally waiting for there is until he's literally physically seeing the cones it's
26:55too late that comes from not planning not planning early enough so it's clear that the
27:00car was at fault here but should the truck driver have slowed down and given way it is a lot harder
27:06for truck drivers to reduce and then increase their speed he's a big vehicle he can't slow down
27:12as quick as we would in cars so that would be a no then and our truck driver exits the scene
27:18leaving our silver car cone alone
27:25but it's not just us brits who can get on the wrong side of roadworks
27:29as this clip from the former soviet union is about to prove so it's dark we're on a
27:37multi-lane highway really big motorway here but it is very dark and you've already got
27:42signs to say there is maintenance work so it's telling you move lanes there's a warning
27:48marker board there saying keep right keep away so whatever it's doing it's keep wanting to
27:54keep away from the central reservation a message that's clearly not reached the
27:58driver of this red car speeding into shot in the fast lane oh my god what are you doing
28:05okay so he's decided to go into the lane when it was telling you not to go that was smart
28:13loads of signs for disaster here you've got the roadworks
28:16it's dark got excess speed for the conditions really haven't we
28:26wow well so this guy's come flying across and he's hit the concrete barrier you could see that
28:31coming all day long couldn't you amazingly the driver of the red car wasn't seriously
28:36hurt by this risky move but was it completely their fault driver he's driving a bit like an
28:43idiot but then again in my opinion there that's poorly poorly is that if there'd been a row of
28:49cones in between those two sets of concrete blocks then the driver would have had a much
28:56more obvious visual cue that that lane was closed and he should not enter it 50 50 really
29:04i don't want to be a driver at audi and i don't want to be the uh the workman that's going to end
29:08up on the chopping board just give everyone a ticket i'll ticket everyone me i'm not bothered
29:13i'll take it my gran if i could charming but if you don't want to face the wrath of coppers like
29:21ben on the road here's some sage advice on how to drive when faced with roadworks you've got signs
29:28they're always going to warn you just get it done nice and early so you're not putting yourself
29:33into a situation where the road is going to disappear on you or close in on you if you're not
29:38sure slow down it's not about being in a race it's about being safe on the road and making sure
29:43everyone else is safe around you if you're not sure reduce your speed and switch yourself on a
29:48little bit more risk taking it's not big it's not clever and invariably puts other road users
30:01in harm's way whether it's making dodgy last minute maneuvers chancing your arm on an overtake
30:08or treating the motorways like a racetrack taking a gamble when driving rarely ends well
30:20and this next clip from la is about to demonstrate that perfectly so we're riding on board with a
30:25tesla which has a million camera angles it's going on a fair old clip which is
30:30fairly unusual for tesla drivers actually there's a busy road there's a lot of traffic
30:35it could indicate that it's evening time that it's high traffic everyone wants to get home
30:40everyone's in a rush it's got some sort of kind of computer game quality to it hasn't it this bit
30:44of footage and funnily enough the driver of the tesla seems to be acting like he's in a game of
30:50grand theft auto the tesla is overtaking everybody clearly is going too fast he's not driving with
30:57due care and attention at all not giving a damn about anybody else that's around him and it seems
31:01this reckless driver has caught the attention of another this black dodge challenger speeding up
31:07from behind are they sort of trying to race each other he's trying to get through that traffic
31:14trying to keep up with the tesla we're riding on board with by the look of it so here he comes
31:20in the old dodge
31:26oh my goodness
31:30wow what an idiot the driver of the charger just did not see the accident coming he's trying to
31:38get through that traffic trying to keep up with the tesla we're riding on board with by the look
31:41of it and just piles into the back of a slower car that's just so stupid and why you don't do
31:48this sort of stuff on the public road you know you're not giving yourself enough time to react
31:54so of course a collision is going to happen isn't it and just like you did there you just
31:58completely obliterated that car that you smashed into the back of miraculously it appears as though
32:04no one was seriously hurt in this incident but it easily could have been a very different story
32:10two drivers thinking they're on the racetrack trying to prove supremacy over one another
32:16but on the public road it's just such a big risk to take and completely unnecessary go and stick
32:22your license back in the christmas cracker you found it in night because you weren't suitable
32:25for the road bye-bye harsh but very very true
32:38next we're off to the city of dongguan in china where it seems risky driving can be just as
32:44problematic so here we are riding on a multi-lane road they look like a nice clear day like bright
32:51skies it's like a nice day for a drive there's a bit of traffic on the road you know but that's
32:56normal what isn't normal though is the behavior of the driver in this blue car on the left
33:02he's coming across from the outside lane trying to get across to the lane where we're riding on
33:07board with the the driver but if he thinks he's going to be able to just cut in he's got another
33:13thing coming he thinks that just because he's indicating over that the driver has got the dash
33:18cam in his vehicle has to give way news flash no he doesn't that's entirely the right of the driver
33:24riding on board with the guy in blue doesn't really like that he feels entitled to be in that
33:30road position he's like i'm not letting you in he's like let me in let me in not by the hair on
33:35my chin chin chin it is similar to some of the behaviors we see when people are in queues but
33:41people are quite militant about their their position that things like pushing in are not
33:47well tolerated and with neither willing to concede the outcome is almost inevitable give up on it mate
33:54it's done oh my goodness wow well that was a bit dumb wasn't it the driver that we're riding on
34:09board with has taken the risk of i'm not getting out of the way i'm just going to drive how i want
34:14to drive and the blue car then takes a second much bigger risk of trying to force the issue
34:20and you don't force the issue with something that's bigger than you that's a basic rule of
34:25life despite the driver flipping their lid and their car nobody appears to be badly hurt
34:33off to australia next to the state of victoria where another driver is about to perform another
34:38very risky maneuver so we're proceeding down the motorway nice day not particularly heavy traffic
34:44coming off what looks like a fairly large motorway but while most traffic appears to know where it's
34:49going keep your eyes on the silver car in the overtaking lane someone's realized rather too
34:55late that they wanted to take this exit this tends to happen because people are so busy thinking about
35:02something else that they haven't noticed where they are on the road what are you doing like carry
35:07on to the next turn off like most normal people i think it might be a bit too late for that
35:13straight across the hatching straight across in front of the vehicle
35:21oh blimey the driver of the silver car pays the price for their risky move it is likely that the
35:30risk element didn't really enter their thought process at this time they were entirely focused
35:34on getting off at that junction they didn't have time to look in their mirrors they didn't have
35:38time to make a safe maneuver they got this completely catastrophically wrong and destroyed
35:42two vehicles as a result of it given the severity of the smash it's a wonder no one was seriously
35:48injured not that that makes a difference for sam i would have the driving license
35:53of the driver in the silver suv taken away thrown in the sea and never given back
35:58coming up terrifying nighttime driving
36:05first place for imbecile of the year and the completely and utterly unexpected what is happening
36:24the positive of driving at night is that the roads are clearer
36:27the negatives it's dark it's way harder to see and frankly we're all a little bit tired but for
36:33some driving at night is unavoidable and when that's the case there's a whole lot more to
36:38consider it makes people potentially tired you've got the dazzle of people's headlights
36:44and it's harder to judge people's speeds and it's hard to judge gaps all very good reasons to stay
36:50at home if you ask me and these drivers on the m6 near walsall are about to introduce another
36:59so traveling down the motorway nine minutes to ten if the clock's correct way past both our
37:05bedtimes paul because it's dark and it's only got minor lighting from street lights it's a very very
37:11dangerous situation is this particularly if you're driving a lorry like the one ahead
37:17with these articulated vehicles obviously vision is very very difficult there is a massive
37:23massive blind spot that truck driver as well as having all the mirrors potentially all the radar
37:29and potentially all the cctv it still makes it very very difficult to know what's around you
37:34and what's going on so when a black car approaches from the slip road and attempts to cut in front
37:40of the lorry trouble is clearly on the horizon they're trying to race ahead as we can see here
37:47he's trying to get in front i don't want to get stuck behind i don't want to get stuck behind
37:50and he's on that throttle trying to get in front but seemingly unable to get ahead
37:55the car drives parallel with the lorry this vehicle's evidently in this truck's blind spot
38:00so he can't be seen the match in the truck speed and that's one thing you should never do
38:05commit yourself and overtake get past it get yourself in front of it and then pull out in
38:10front or reduce your speed and pull out behind never ever match the vehicle speed that's already
38:15on the main carriageway because if you do this is what could happen oh crikey and there's more
38:29wow another car has plowed into the now stationary lorry closing off the entire carriageway but who
38:36was actually at fault so when it comes to a blame came here in my opinion it's going to be that
38:44darker car highway code states that the traffic merging from the left onto the high speed road
38:48will match their speed to suit the speed of the carriageway and give way to the traffic already
38:54to the traffic already on the carriageway that's how you exit our entrance and motorway very very
39:00easy and everyone can be safe and go on the way and get home and have a tea
39:07which hopefully won't be a slice of humble pie
39:17next we're being sent to coventry or to be precise the m6 next to it
39:22i said this is a typical motorway on a night time it's dark traffic seems to be going at a
39:27normal speed this shouldn't be a problem for any driver really maybe not yet but with what looks
39:33like congestion ahead there are soon two very big reasons to progress with caution
39:39what drivers indicated over because he can see traffic and congestion in his lane
39:44the cars in the fast lane have slowed down you can see the brake lights coming on because there's
39:48congestion ahead but this black car speeding into shot doesn't seem to have noticed any of this

40:30what actually happened so he's obviously gunning it down this lane and then he's realized hang on a
40:36minute the traffic slowed right down so i better slam on my brakes and then that's just when he's
40:40lost it he's veered off into the middle lane and then just at that point the bus has then
40:45indicated to come over into the middle lane as well and then they both nearly collided
40:50this is just one of those accidents that's entirely unnecessary it doesn't react until
40:54way too late brakes far too hard locks the front wheels and then ends up reacting in all
41:01sorts of wrong ways and spinning the car into the barrier causing lots of damage
41:05and blocking the motorway at night which is quite dangerous amazingly no one seems to be injured
41:12but it could have easily been a very different story that's driving without due care and attention
41:18now i'll bill see you doing that it's going to be blue lights and you're going to get dragged
41:22off to the cells mate i mean that is bloody dangerous what he's just done

41:42darkest russia here we are driving on at night not sure if the headlights on this car are working
41:48properly traveling in the dark the road's not very well lit there's not a lot of visibility
41:54on this road is there it is absolutely pitch black i don't know about you but this is giving
42:00me the heebie-jeebies already there aren't even any cat's eyes on the edges of the road you can
42:04just literally see the white line that marks the outside of the tarmac that's all you can see
42:10because you don't have good visibility of what's around you you can't see what might be approaching
42:15the road you can't see very far ahead you've got to be prepared for the unexpected all the time
42:21but there's the unexpected and then there's the unexpected
42:28and here we go something ahead what is it is this someone stopped in the road what is happening here

42:46is it a bird is it a plane no oh it's an animal

42:58there's a moose on the loose just look at that that's incredible the moose seems to have fallen
43:05down an unseen hill on the right directly into the path of the oncoming driver you probably have
43:12nightmares after that can you imagine how scary that must have been and even scarier for the moose
43:18unfortunately with how dark this road is there's no way that you could have predicted that this
43:22animal was just going to fall off the side of the hill like that into the road and they're
43:27really fortunate that they didn't hit the moose it's a miracle the moose wasn't mowed
43:31but what should you do if an animal crosses your path whilst driving
43:38this is going to sound a bit brutal the advice generally is if a deer runs out in front of you
43:44don't swerve to avoid it because you're likely to cause a bigger accident by swerving into the path
43:49of oncoming traffic or swerve off the road so my advice is to slow down and keep your eyes open and
43:56be very alert for that little flash of the deer's eyes or whatever it is so you can react in time
44:02and get on the brakes and avoid killing a deer and perhaps causing some serious damage to your
