Wang Yi and Jake Sullivan seek to stabilize China-U.S. relations in Beijing talks

  • last month
China's top diplomat Wang Yi met with U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Tuesday in Beijing, as the world's two largest economies seek to maintain open channels of communication to "stabilize" bilateral relations.

Acknowledging the strained relationship over the past few years, Wang expressed hope that the new round of China-U.S. dialogue could promote bilateral ties in line with the "San Francisco vision." He emphasized the need to "overcome distractions, remove obstacles," and allow the relationship to develop in a "stable, healthy, and sustainable" manner.

Sullivan's three-day visit to the Chinese capital marks his fifth meeting with Wang.

Their last encounter was in January in Bangkok, Thailand, two months after Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden held talks in San Francisco, where the two leaders engaged in "candid" exchanges and outlined the future course of China-U.S. relations.
