  • last month
The Ukrainian military’s incursion into Kursk aimed to force Russia to shift troops from key fronts, but Moscow remained focused, according to Colonel General Aleksandr Syrsky. The operation sought to divert Russian forces from areas like Pokrovsk and Kurakhovsk to ease pressure on Ukrainian positions. Despite Ukraine’s efforts, Russia concentrated its resources on Pokrovsk, leaving Ukrainian forces facing significant challenges there. Syrsky highlighted the difficulty in the Pokrovsk and Kurakhovsk regions due to Russia’s strategic adjustments.

00:00Ukraine's top military commander, Colonel-General Alexander Sersky, has admitted that their
00:21recent incursion into Russia's Kursk region has failed to achieve a key strategic goal.
00:27His operation, which began on August 6, was the largest attack on internationally recognized
00:33Russian territory since the war started in February 2022.
00:38The main objective of this offensive was to force Russia to direct its troops away from
00:43the critical Pokrovsk and Kurakhovsk areas in the Donetsk People's Republic.
00:49These two towns were strategically important as they sit on key supply routes linking Donbass
00:55to other regions.
00:56However, Sersky revealed that Russia did not take the bait.
01:00Instead, the Russian military continued to focus its effort on the front line, where
01:05the combat-ready units were already concentrated.
01:09This led to a quite difficult situation for the Ukrainian forces in Kursk area.
01:15The Kursk operation has also been costly for Ukraine.
01:18According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Ukraine has lost over 6,600 service members,
01:2473 tanks and more than 500 armored vehicles in this incursion.
01:29Despite these losses, Ukrainian troops are still managing to hold some key settlement
01:34in the border area.
01:37There also have been inconsistent explanations from the Ukrainian leadership about the goals
01:41of Kursk operation.
01:43Initially, it was presented as a way to intimidate the Russian public and gain leverage for future
01:48peace talks.
01:49Later on, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that it is to create a buffer zone
01:54inside Russian territory and deter attacks on Ukraine's Sumy region.
01:59Interestingly, anonymous sources cited by The Economist suggest that Sersky ordered
02:03the Kursk operation out of desperation, as he was reportedly close to being fired in
02:08early August.
02:11The operation was seen as an attempt to create bargaining chip for future negotiations and
02:16elevate pressure on Ukrainian forces in Donbass.
02:20The admission by Ukraine's top general also provides insight into the difficulties of
02:25military decision-making in the prolonged war, where the outcome of high-stake gamble
02:30can have significant consequences.
02:46Thank you for watching!
