Hidden gem winery continues to produce high quality wines

00:00Hello there, I'm James McMirovich and I'm here at the Hapeley Green Wine Yard. This

00:11is a unique place outside Wolverhampton that sells English wine, which has had a comedy

00:16reputation over the years, but has really risen up. This place in particular is award

00:21winning for a lot of its wines. It's got some spectacular options, you can see some of the

00:24good ones here. This in front of me is the Rosé Sparkling Vintage 2021. It is a nice

00:34fizzy option. You may be able to tell I'm not an expert at this, but however, I shall

00:39have a quick sample of this and see what I think. A lovely fruity bouquet, you can definitely

00:44tell the different types of fruits in there. It's got a rich flavour to it. That's a taste

00:57that keeps going, you can really taste the different grapes in there. That is spectacular.

01:03So we're here in the vineyard here at Hapeley Green with Ben Hunt. He is the winemaker,

01:08he's the craftsman of things like this, the Penny Red, which as it says here, fruits driven

01:13and approachable with aromas of plum, violets and sweet spices. He's also holding a glass of it.

01:18One of the things that we've been talking about Ben is the idea of English wine. I mean,

01:22what is it about English wine that makes it so special? Specifically, what is it about the

01:26English wine from here that makes it so special? Yeah, English wine's become much more appealing

01:32in the last 10, 20 years. As the industry's been growing, the winemakers have been picking up more

01:37knowledge, the vineyards have been maturing with the help of climate change. English wine brings

01:44some wonderfully fresh characters that just makes you want to keep drinking more and more of it.

01:49People buying our wine, they want to keep coming back because it is so different and enjoyable.

01:54Obviously, I've described that one, which is the, as we said, it's the Penny Red. What is

01:58it about that that people keep coming back for? Yeah, I mean, the fruit levels in this wine are

02:03absolutely beautiful. The alcohol's a little bit lighter and that is appealing to the drinkers

02:10these days and there's so much fruit going on within a wine like this, like we said,

02:14blackberry flavours, but it just makes you want to keep coming back to drink more of it. Good

02:20for the discerning wine drinker, absolutely fantastic.
