Wendy Saddington - GTK (1969)
Transcript
00:00Wendy, three years ago you were a typist. Were you a singer before or did you just leave
00:10the job and have to get some way to earn money and singing was the easiest?
00:13Oh no, I was sort of always out of jobs, you know, and singing wasn't to me a way to make
00:19money, I didn't think it was, I didn't think it was a thing. But I was a singer and I still
00:23am a singer.
00:24Wendy, a lot of the pop fans really admire you and you set the example for them. Does
00:29this worry you at all, this responsibility of being a public figure?
00:34No, it doesn't worry me but I think you're wrong that a lot of people admire me. I think
00:41some do but I think it's 50-50, some admire me and some, you know, the opposite. They
00:48sort of think I'm rubbish.
00:52Does it upset you if you're say walking down the street and people stare at you and make
00:57rude comments and things? Or is that what you expect from people?
01:01No, I've become to accept it as sort of a thing. Well, I do look a bit different to
01:09everyone else and so it's expected that people are going to, but I don't think they have
01:13to go to the extent of being rude. They can laugh, I don't mind that at all. But, you
01:17know, I don't think they should go to the extent of being rude.
01:21Do you want to get out of Australia, Wendy?
01:23I would like to, but at the moment I'm not ready to. I'd like, because I wouldn't be
01:29happy, I'd get homesick, I know, if I left Australia now. Well, I'd like to when I get
01:34a little bit more mature.
01:36What's wrong with being a singer in Australia?
01:39Um, oh, it's very hard. The people, there's so many superficial people in the pop business
01:47and it sort of, it depresses me and I sort of can't stand it for very long, you know.
01:53And sort of, that's what's wrong and you have to sort of be with these people for a certain
01:58amount of time.
02:00Is it the whole manager clique which gets you down?
02:03Oh, it's not just the manager clique, it's the others, there's sort of hangers-on to
02:07the pop scene that are the same, you know. It's a lot of people, everybody involved with
02:13the pop scene seems to me that there's something superficial about them, just about everybody,
02:18there are a few exceptions.
02:21Have you many friends within the pop scene?
02:23Ah, no, I wouldn't say I have any.
02:26Do you want to really change Australia?
02:29Oh, I can't change Australia, Australia's supposed to change itself, but it's so sort
02:35of backward. It's not just Australia though, it's the whole, the whole world is sort of
02:39so wrong, a lot of people are so wrong. When there's violence going on in the world, you
02:46can't sort of say, you know, it's a good world, because it's not.
02:53If you had one sort of wish, what would it be? One total thing you could do?
03:01I think for the whole world to be at peace, and everyone sort of be happy there.
