00:00Hey, hey, hey, hey.
00:31For years, international football has been dominated
00:34by the flashy, entertaining and extremely skilful stars
00:37from the South American nation of Brazil.
00:40The country has provided the world
00:42with a production line of footballing greats
00:44whose legends will long outlast their careers.
00:48This time, we shine the spotlight
00:50on the amazing rags-to-riches tale
00:52of Rivaldo Vitor Borba Ferreira,
00:55known to his friends and fans simply as Rivaldo.
01:01Rivaldo was born on the 19th of April, 1972,
01:05in Paulista, Brazil.
01:07Located in the state of Pernambuco,
01:09a city made famous for its beaches.
01:12However, the future looked far from bright
01:14for the young Rivaldo,
01:16who was born into extreme poverty.
01:18Rivaldo grew up in the favelas of the town.
01:21The poverty experienced by Rivaldo
01:23caused him to be malnourished as a child
01:25and also to lose a number of his teeth.
01:28Footballing fame seemed a world away.
01:31His circumstances presented a major obstacle
01:34that would need to be overcome
01:36if he was to reach his potential as a footballer.
01:38He simply didn't have the physical health and strength
01:41to survive in a professional sport.
01:43But when a person possesses as much natural talent as Rivaldo,
01:47there is always help.
01:49However, all hope was nearly lost in 1989
01:52when his father, Romildo, was killed in a road accident.
01:56Despite his sorrow, the 16-year-old Rivaldo
01:59signed with local club Paulista later that year.
02:02The Paulista coaches took a chance on Rivaldo,
02:05even though they believed he was physically too weak to succeed.
02:09He remained with the club until 1991,
02:12when he moved to Santa Cruz.
02:15He lasted a year there
02:17before moving south to the state of Sao Paulo in 1992,
02:20where he played for Mogi Mirum in the Brazilian second-tiered league.
02:26It was with Mogi Mirum that Rivaldo produced
02:28one of the highlights of his young career
02:31and made club scouts stand up and take notice.
02:36In a 1993 Sao Paulo state championship match against Noroeste,
02:41as soon as the referee's whistle was blown to begin the match,
02:44Rivaldo noticed that the Noroeste goalkeeper was out of position.
02:48He lobbed the ball from the midfield circle over the defenders
02:52and the keeper and into the net for a goal.
02:56The next season saw Rivaldo in the first division,
02:59playing for Corinthians in the state capital.
03:04He had a fantastic season, but switched clubs again after a year.
03:10This time he moved to Palmeiras,
03:12who went on to win the Brazilian Serie A championship.
03:20Rivaldo was transferred to Europe
03:23and played for Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna.
03:26He spent just one season there
03:28before being transferred to FC Barcelona in 1997.
03:32He had an immediate impact
03:34and earned many individual trophies in his five seasons with the club,
03:38among them a prestigious FIFA World Player of the Year award in 1999.
03:45Rivaldo produced arguably his best football during his time at Barcelona.
03:49However, during his third year at the club,
03:51he had a falling out with manager Louis van Gaal
03:54after Rivaldo insisted on being played as a playmaker
03:57rather than on the left wing.
04:00He was released from his contract in 2002 and put up for transfer.
04:05There are some who thought Rivaldo was having a negative impact on the club.
04:13I hope they, Barcelona, will be champions because of Rivaldo's departure.
04:18I hope they get titles for Barcelona because they have no excuse.
04:22Rivaldo is gone.
04:24According to them, Rivaldo was the one causing damage to the system.
04:28Well, Rivaldo is no longer in that system.
04:31Now they surely will be champions of the European Cup,
04:34the League and the King Cup.
04:40When Rivaldo's departure was confirmed,
04:42he thanked the club and the Barcelona fans for their support.
04:49First of all, I want to thank the fans
04:53for all they have done for me during five seasons.
04:57I'm leaving the same way I entered here, through the front door.
05:03I always tried to do my best for Barcelona
05:06and surely the fans have done their best for Rivaldo.
05:09That's what happens in soccer.
05:13Barcelona has also done many good things for Rivaldo
05:16thanks again to all.
05:22With Barcelona behind him, the next step was to find a new club
05:26and there were many interested parties.
05:29It was Italian club AC Milan that secured his services.
05:32Italian Prime Minister Silvio Bertolasconi
05:35played a major role in luring the midfielder to Milan.
05:40I hope to be in top form because I know it's difficult to win the Italian League
05:44but I've always been a winner.
05:56There were a lot of clubs interested in buying me
05:59but I think I've made the right decision coming to Milan.
06:02It's a great team and a great club.
06:06I want to thank him for his confidence in me
06:09and bringing me to Milan.
06:17I spoke to him several times on the telephone
06:20and I'd like to thank him for the contract.
06:25Rivaldo came to Milan as one of the top players in the world.
06:29He had scored 130 goals and won the Champions League
06:33He had scored 130 goals during his five seasons at Barcelona.
06:37The Brazilian midfielder seduced crowds with his attacking style of play
06:41typifying the so-called Samba style
06:44so often associated with Brazilian football.
06:47When he arrived at Milan the club was already doing very well.
06:51Unfortunately for Rivaldo
06:53he never managed to reproduce the form he'd enjoyed at Barcelona.
06:57He struggled at his new club
06:59partly because of repeated injury problems
07:01and was not a regular starter for the team.
07:04Despite his individual struggles
07:06Milan was performing well
07:08and Rivaldo was part of the team's UEFA Champions League campaign
07:11in his first season at the club.
07:14The club was attempting to win its sixth title.
07:17Milan progressed through both group stages as table leaders.
07:20They then defeated Ajax in the quarter-finals
07:23and went on to face rivals Inter Milan in the semis.
07:26Fortunately for Rivaldo
07:28AC managed to squeeze through on the away goals rule.
07:32Milan were to face fellow Italian rivals Juventus in the final.
07:36Juventus had also performed strongly in the competition.
07:39They had dispatched Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid
07:43on the way to the final
07:45and came into the match with plenty of confidence.
07:48The final was to be held at Old Trafford in England
07:51on the 28th of May 2003.
07:54It was the first time in history
07:56that two Italian clubs had faced each other in the Champions League final.
08:01Rivaldo had continued his topsy-turvy form in the Champions League.
08:05He was still struggling to cement his place in the side
08:08and was certainly not guaranteed to be named in the squad for the final.
08:14As it turned out, Rivaldo was included in the team
08:17but remained on the sidelines as a substitute.
08:21On the day it was a tight contest.
08:23The scores remained at nil all after extra time
08:26but Milan eventually prevailed 3-2 on penalties.
08:31Among Rivaldo's club achievements to date
08:34are a Brazilian Serie A championship in 1994,
08:38two Spanish La Liga titles in 1998 and 1999
08:42and the UEFA Champions League title in 2003
08:47along with three Greek League titles in a row in 2005 to 2007.
08:54After his first season at AC Milan,
08:56his time with the club looked all but over.
09:00In 2004, he left and briefly returned to Brazil,
09:04playing for Cruzeiro before moving to his ninth club,
09:07Olympiacos, in the same year.
09:13Rivaldo enjoyed a very successful international career with Brazil,
09:17playing for his country from 1993 to 2003.
09:22Rivaldo and the national team
09:24enjoyed a host of successes during his tenure.
09:28The most significant of these successes came in the 2002 World Cup.
09:33The Brazilian team were hoping to make up for their loss
09:36in the final four years earlier.
09:39They finished on top of their group
09:41and went on to face Belgium in the second round.
09:44They play like in England,
09:46so lots of long balls, they are strong on the air,
09:49so you have to be careful on the air
09:51and Brazil have to play the same way they are playing.
09:55The Brazilians went into the match favourites
09:57after their strong performance in the group stage.
10:00They didn't disappoint, winning 2-0.
10:03The next mission for Brazil was to beat England.
10:06The English team had finished second in their group
10:08and then defeated Denmark 3-0 in the second week.
10:11The match promised to be tight.
10:14They are attacking a lot, with a lot of players,
10:17with a lot of skill of course,
10:20so we must pay attention of course.
10:27Defending very well,
10:29but you can't win football games only defending,
10:33you have to attack as well.
10:35Rivaldo was in good form for Brazil,
10:37having scored a goal in every match so far.
10:41We have to be very compact, very tight,
10:44work as a unit,
10:46if we don't do that we will give them time and space
10:49and then they will kill us.
10:54It's a great game,
10:55everybody wanted to see this as the final,
10:58but instead it's the quarter final.
11:01I hope Brazil has more luck than England
11:03and goes all the way to the final.
11:06He continued his good form,
11:08scoring a crucial goal as Brazil defeated England 2-0.
11:13Brazil advanced to the semi-finals to face Turkey,
11:16whom they had beaten 2-1 in the group stage.
11:20Rivaldo had scored the winning goal from a penalty.
11:25The thing to do is,
11:26if we have the opportunity as we did in the first game
11:29against Turkey in the group games,
11:31is to score goals.
11:32We need to score so people don't come after us
11:34and tell us that we only won
11:36because we were helped by the referee.
11:38So we need to score the goals if the opportunity comes.
11:42The Brazilians were too strong,
11:44prevailing 1-0 in a hard-fought contest.
11:46In the final they would face the mighty Germans.
11:49Germany had overcome Paraguay,
11:51the United States and Korea in the finals
11:54and had only conceded one goal in the tournament so far,
11:57thanks to the saving skills of their coach.
12:00We have to be confident.
12:02We know that we are prepared.
12:04But we know how difficult it is to win against Germany.
12:08So I think we are prepared for anything.
12:13We played the same way we played the first six games.
12:18We know Germany is ready too,
12:20but we are ready to win.
12:23We are ready to win.
12:25We know Germany is ready too,
12:27but we are ready to win.
12:39I've got a feeling telling me
12:41that we'll be the world champions.
12:44I can't really explain why.
12:46Every one of us has to play the game of his life.
12:50They're probably the best team in the world
12:53in terms of individual players
12:55with exceptional people in every position.
13:02But the team with the most gifted players
13:05do not always win.
13:07If the best team always won the World Cup,
13:10then Brazil would have won it 14 times,
13:13not just four.
13:20Finals are often decided on small things,
13:23sometimes on luck.
13:25It may be that the teams will neutralise each other,
13:28like what happened in 1994.
13:35I have all due respect for Ronaldo,
13:37Ronaldinho and Rivaldo,
13:40who are fantastic players,
13:42but they still have to beat me.
13:46The prospect of the best attacking formation in the world
13:50facing the world's best goalkeeper in Oliver Kahn
13:53was an exciting prospect for the fans.
13:57Rivaldo was in fantastic form,
13:59as were many of his team-mates.
14:01There was a tremendous amount of faith amongst the team
14:04that they could atone for their 1998 final defeat.
14:08Both teams had a history of success in World Cups.
14:12Both teams were the two teams that got more Cup finals,
14:17but never played again,
14:20so I think it will be a great match.
14:22After four years of build-up,
14:24the 2002 World Cup came down to the outcome of one match
14:28on 30 June at International Stadium in Yokohama, Japan.
14:32The crowd saw a scoreless first half
14:35before Ronaldo broke the drought,
14:37scoring two goals in the second half
14:39to ensure a comfortable win for Brazil.
14:41Brazilian fans were understandably ecstatic at the win
14:44and celebrations continued into the night.
14:46Rivaldo's international honours
14:48include the 2002 World Cup triumph,
14:51the Copa America in 1999
14:53and the Confederations Cup in 1997.
14:56The World Cup was undoubtedly Rivaldo's greatest triumph,
15:00the crowning achievement of any footballer's career.
15:04MUSIC
15:07During his time on the national team,
15:09Rivaldo got to play with many of the best footballers
15:12his country has ever produced.
15:14Football in the 90s and early 2000s
15:17was dominated by Brazil,
15:19the most successful nation in World Cup history.
15:22What made the side so dangerous
15:24was its world-famous triple threat,
15:26known as the Three Rs,
15:28Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Nonovinho.
15:31The three stars were the best attackers in the world
15:34and they struck fear into the hearts of opposing defenders.
15:37Ronaldo and Rivaldo fitted together so well in the team,
15:41while Ronaldo was a true striker,
15:43Rivaldo was more of a playmaker,
15:45constantly setting up goals for the deadly Ronaldo.
15:48The double act brought many opposition defences unstuck in their time.
15:52Ronaldo began his senior career in 1993
15:55at Brazilian club Cruzeiro.
15:57He spent one year there
15:59before moving to Dutch club PSV Eindhoven,
16:02where he soon established himself as a quality striker.
16:06He has since played for Barcelona,
16:08Inter Milan, Real Madrid,
16:10where he played most of his club football
16:12and AC Milan.
16:13He currently plays for Corinthians.
16:16He played for the Brazilian national team
16:18between 1994 and 2006,
16:21making 97 appearances and scoring 62 goals.
16:25Ronaldo's flair and poise in the box were unrivalled.
16:29He soon became a household name
16:31and was a poster boy not just for Brazil,
16:33but for the game in general, such was his fame.
16:36He played an integral part in the successful 2002 World Cup campaign,
16:41as well as racking up an astonishing number of individual honours,
16:44over 50 at last count.
16:47The other musketeer in Brazil's trio of attacking power
16:50was Ronaldinho.
16:52Ronaldinho played mainly as an attacking midfielder or left winger.
16:56Ronaldinho was an excitement machine.
16:59He set up play after play for his teammates,
17:01and the trio fitted together perfectly to devastating effect.
17:06Ronaldinho is younger than Ronaldo and Rivaldo.
17:10Born in 1980, he began his international career in 1999,
17:14a year after his senior club career.
17:17He has made 87 appearances and scored 32 goals.
17:21Ronaldinho's club career began at Grêmio with the youth squad.
17:25He made it to the senior squad in 1998.
17:28He stayed at the club for three seasons
17:30before being transferred to France to play for Paris Saint-Germain.
17:35In 2003, after impressing European scouts,
17:38he was transferred to Spanish giant Barcelona,
17:41where he played the majority of his football.
17:44He currently plays for AC Milan in the Italian Serie A.
17:48Although he started later than Ronaldo and Rivaldo,
17:51Ronaldinho has come to be acknowledged
17:53as one of the greatest players of his generation.
17:56And at 30 years old, he still has a few years in him yet.
18:00Ronaldinho has earned over 20 individual honours.
18:03Among these, two FIFA World Player of the Year awards,
18:07rivalling Ronaldo's three.
18:10Another of Brazil's household names
18:12is the younger but no less well-known Kaka.
18:16Born in 1982, Kaka is 28 years old.
18:19He joined the national team in 2002 as an attacking midfielder.
18:24He has made 73 appearances and scored 26 goals for the national team.
18:30Kaka's first club was Sao Paulo in Brazil,
18:33where he spent six years in the junior squad
18:35before becoming a senior in 2001.
18:39He played for three seasons with the seniors
18:41and then went to Europe,
18:43and more specifically to Italy and AC Milan.
18:47Kaka has made a name for himself
18:49over the course of six seasons in Serie A,
18:52before being transferred to Real Madrid in 2009.
18:56He joined the national team for the 2002 World Cup.
19:00However, he only played a total of 25 minutes,
19:03all of which were in the first-round match against Costa Rica.
19:07The talented midfielder has amassed
19:09over 35 individual honours in his career to date,
19:12an amazing achievement.
19:14Like the three Rs, he has also received
19:16the coveted FIFA World Player of the Year award,
19:19winning it in 2007.
19:22He also received the Ballon d'Or in 2007
19:25and was named the UEFA Champions League top scorer in 06-07.
19:30He has also won three UEFA Team of the Year awards.
19:35Still in his 20s, the trophies are sure to keep coming.
19:43Rivaldo's brilliance on the field
19:45was occasionally contrasted with alleged discretions off the field,
19:49such as his falling out with Barcelona manager Louis van Gaal.
19:53However, Rivaldo let his on-field talent
19:55do the talking for most of the time.
20:00He is married to partner Rose, with whom he has two sons,
20:03named Rivaldinho and Thamiris.
20:06Rivaldo prefers to leave the spotlight to son Rivaldinho,
20:10who has appeared in a number of TV commercials in Spain
20:13and is already something of a star.
20:18Rivaldo has kept his life off the field very private
20:21and gives very little away about his life.
20:23However, he makes no secret of his deep passion
20:26for helping the poor children of the world.
20:28His commitment to the cause stems from his upbringing.
20:31Rivaldo endured a horrific childhood,
20:33and just like him, for many children in Brazil,
20:36soccer is the only way out of a life of poverty.
20:39Few make it, but some, like Rivaldo,
20:41have both the mental strength and the natural talent
20:44to make it in the world of professional football.
20:49Rivaldo made a name for himself
20:51by shaking off opponents and advancing upfield.
20:54He accomplished similar feats in his childhood,
20:56shrugging off numerous obstacles
20:58that stood in his way of becoming a football star.
21:02Growing up in the north of Brazil,
21:04a long way from the birthplace of most of Brazil's star exports,
21:08Rivaldo faced almost insurmountable odds,
21:11and yet he managed to overcome them.
21:13It's not so surprising, then,
21:15that Rivaldo supports charities aimed at ending poverty,
21:18both in his home country and around the world.
21:23He helped found the charity that bears his name.
21:25He donates part of his wages to the charity,
21:27which aims to help children in Brazil and Spain.
21:30He has used his position of power and wealth
21:33to lend a helping hand to many people in need.
21:36Despite approaching the twilight of his career,
21:38Rivaldo's wealth continues to grow.
21:42He moved to Uzbekistan club Bunyodko in 2008
21:46after the club offered him a lucrative deal
21:48worth about 10.2 million euros over two years.
21:52Later that year, he signed a new contract
21:54that will keep him in Uzbekistan until June 2011.
21:58For many stars of the football world,
22:00fame means lucrative sponsorship contracts,
22:03tabloid headlines, affairs with models,
22:05endless merchandise.
22:07But Rivaldo has for the most part avoided these trappings,
22:11instead letting his football be the main focus in his life.
22:15His many individual honours are a shining testament
22:17to his focus and determination.
22:22His accolades include the FIFA World Player of the Year Award in 1999
22:26and the UEFA Champions League top scorer in 2000.
22:30He has also been named in the FIFA 100.
22:33These individual awards reflect Rivaldo's talent
22:36and dedication as a player.
22:38They will stand as timeless reminders
22:40of his world-beating exploits on the pitch.
22:43Meanwhile, he continues to play on in Uzbekistan,
22:46where he brings a touch of class to the local competition.
22:52Thanks to Rivaldo's fairytale story,
22:54young kids everywhere now know that dreams can come true,
22:58however their lives start out.
23:03Hey, hey, hey, hey!
