00:00Well, we'll tell you now that Taylor Swift is quite the lucky one, with her rise to fame
00:04being nothing short of a love story.
00:06Before Swift found a place in this world, she was just a girl at home on her Christmas
00:09tree farm with a dream.
00:10No, really, I'm not joking.
00:12She grew up on a Christmas tree farm.
00:14Taylor Swift once said,
00:15Someday I'll be living in a big old city, and all you're ever gonna be is mean.
00:19And four years later, her lyrics,
00:21Welcome to New York, it's been waiting for you, got us full circle.
00:24Though she's gone on to show those haters how untouchable she can be, Swift's journey
00:28hasn't been shy of controversy and scandal from the beginning of her career at 15 years
00:33old.
00:34Fast forward 16 years, 11 Grammys, 9 albums, and 2 re-recorded albums later, and well,
00:39long story short, Swift's career has been quite the gold rush.
00:42But who was Taylor Swift before the fearless woman we know her as today?
00:46Whether you've been a fan since she was crying teardrops on her guitar, or just hate
00:50Jake Gyllenhaal, or you just wanted to know more about her lavish lifestyle, where she
00:54calls home, and the details about her rise to fame, well, stay, stay, stay right there,
00:59because here at Famous Life, we know this story all too well.
01:08Taylor Allison Swift was born on December 13, 1989 in Reading, Pennsylvania, and is
01:13of English, German, Irish, and Scottish descent.
01:16Her father, Scott Kingsley Swift, is a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch, and her mother, Andrea,
01:21is a marketing executive.
01:22Andrea named her daughter after James Taylor, the famed folk rock singer, in hopes that
01:26a gender-neutral name might benefit Taylor in her career.
01:29Three years later, Andrea gave birth to Swift's younger brother, Austin, and began working
01:33as a stay-at-home mom.
01:35She made sure to include music and art in her kids' lives, taking Taylor to Broadway
01:38and New York regularly for acting and singing lessons.
01:41Taylor started to take a liking to country music, inspired by Shania Twain, Faith Hill,
01:46and other female artists.
01:47She began singing at small venues and won a talent competition when she was 11 that
01:51gave her the chance to open for bluegrass singer Charlie Daniels.
01:55But despite her successes, her ambition and love for country music separated her from
01:59the rest of her schoolmates.
02:01One day at school, her friends decided young Taylor wasn't welcome in their group anymore,
02:04a decision I'm sure they've lived to regret.
02:07But hey, there's nothing better than revenge, right?
02:10As Taylor was pretty upset, she went home and wrote a song about it.
02:13Old habit to die hard, I guess, and she's had that blank space ready to write a name
02:16for a while now.
02:18One day when she was 12, Taylor and her mother encountered a computer repair man named Ronnie
02:21Kremmer when they came into his store to record a demo.
02:24Kremmer went on to teach Swift how to play the guitar, stating they quickly went from
02:28learning to play guitar to learning how to write and structure songs.
02:31Soon after, Taylor had written her first song on guitar called Lucky You.
02:35From there, there was no turning back, but Taylor had always been ready for it.
02:38So her parents rallied the help of a big-shot music manager who got Taylor a chance to show
02:43off her style in a modeling gig for Amber Crombie and Finch during their Rising Star
02:47campaign.
02:48After going to several major label meetings, Swift would see her wildest dreams come true
02:52as she landed a spot in the artist development program with RCA Records at the age of 14.
02:57Her and her family packed up and moved to Tennessee.
02:59Soon, Taylor was recording demos and a performance at an industry showcase would catch the eye
03:04of ex-DreamWorks recreative executive Scott Borchetta.
03:08Scott was about to form his own label and he wanted Taylor to be the first one on it,
03:11but the problem was she was already with RCA.
03:13The label was going to make her wait until the age of 18 for her debut, but not Scott.
03:18So she jumped ship.
03:19Yeah, at just 15 years old, she took her contract with one of the biggest record labels in town
03:24and decided to just shake it off.
03:26Her old manager would later sue Swift and her parents for doing so.
03:29Her debut self-titled album came out on October 24, 2006.
03:33Initially, the album didn't do too well, but as the weeks went on it started to climb
03:37the charts and within the year went platinum.
03:40The success followed two years later as she released her sophomore album, Fearless, which
03:43took home the Grammy for Best Album.
03:45Despite this accomplishment, it was mainly overshadowed by her win at the 2009 VMAs.
03:50I'm sure we all knew he was trouble when Kanye jumped on stage and stole her moment,
03:54voicing how Beyonce should've won.
03:56This was the beginning of some bad blood between Kanye, his then-wife Kim Kardashian, and Swift
04:01that wouldn't settle for another decade.
04:03Taylor typically stayed out of large-scale scandals, with most of the tabloid headlines
04:07about her over the years being focused on her love life.
04:10The star fired back about her reputation on songs like Blank Space, addressing her media
04:14portrayal as some kind of madwoman whose sole endgame was to write songs about her exes
04:19and take them down.
04:20Taylor's discography of love and breakup songs has been treated as a game of guess
04:24who for her exes, with many making connections between John Mayer and Dear John, Joe Jonas
04:29and Mr. Perfectly Fine, Harry Styles and Style, and most notably, Jake Gyllenhaal in All Too
04:36Well and The Moment I Knew.
04:38And All Too Well, the 10-minute version.
04:40And All Too Well, the short film.
04:42And All Too Well, the 10-minute version, Taylor's version, From the Vault, Sad Girl Autumn version,
04:48Long Pond.
04:49You get it.
04:50Gyllenhaal's name has been popping up alongside Swift's over the last few weeks, as Taylor
04:54re-recorded her 2012 album Red, including a 10-minute version of the fan-favorite song
04:59All Too Well, which oversees her relationship with Gyllenhaal.
05:02This all stems from Swift's dispute with her old label back in 2019 when Scooter Braun
05:07acquired the masters to Taylor's first six albums.
05:10And this would be the moment she knew that everything has changed.
05:13Taylor publicly disproved of this, calling Braun a manipulative bully and having the
05:17epiphany to re-record her first six albums to create new masters, allowing her to own
05:22her discography.
05:23She would begin again with Fearless, Taylor's version, in April 2021.
05:27Upon releasing the re-recording, the original Fearless album dropped 19% in sales, then
05:31fell off the charts completely.
05:33Meanwhile, Fearless, Taylor's version, debuted at number one.
05:36You know the power you have to have to re-release the exact same songs from 13 years ago and
05:41still have it top the charts?
05:43But this kind of success for Taylor is nothing new.
05:45Not only is Taylor one of the world's best-selling music artists of all time, she's also one
05:50of the world's highest-paid celebrities with an estimated net worth of about $365 million.
05:55She's also the queen of reinventing herself, so it should come as no surprise her real
05:59estate portfolio is similar.
06:01She knows places to live in luxury, from her California homes to sprawling New York City
06:05penthouses and everywhere in between.
06:07But no matter the home, you know she'll never go out of style.
06:10For her first stop, welcome to New York, where Swift basically purchased an entire block
06:15for $47.7 million.
06:18Her first spot in the big city was made back in 2014, when she bought two neighboring penthouses
06:22in the Tribeca neighborhood for $19.95 million.
06:26Then in 2018, Taylor also snagged the second-floor complex in the same building for almost $10
06:31million, which spans over 3,500 square feet of space.
06:34Well, you know what they say, two is better than one.
06:37This Tribeca duplex has amazing features such as an indoor pool, a master suite with floor-to-ceiling
06:42windows, a double-height living room with a fireplace and ornate chandelier, and a cozier
06:47den that has yet another fireplace and beamed ceilings overhead.
06:51Also in 2017, Taylor bought a 100-year-old, four-level townhome next door for $18 million,
06:57which boasted features like a gym, a spa, antique wide-plank wood floors, and a planted
07:02terrace with a Japanese paper-glass wall.
07:04The townhouse boasted seven bedrooms and six baths in total, with three of the bedrooms
07:08located in a next-door apartment.
07:10When Taylor needs a getaway, she has her Rhode Island mansion to escape to, which she reportedly
07:14snagged in an all-cash deal for $17.75 million.
07:18The property sits on five acres of land with over 700 feet of beachfront, not to mention
07:23it's on the highest point in Watch Hill, giving Swift amazing views of the water.
07:27This Rhode Island estate spans 12,000 square feet inside with eight beds, nine baths, and
07:32eight fireplaces throughout, not to mention plenty of space for all of her guests when
07:36she throws her summer parties.
07:37No cruel summers here, but being a Nashville native, of course Taylor also owns property
07:43here as well.
07:44One of her first-ever real estate purchases was in 2009 when she bought a penthouse on
07:48Nashville's Music Row for $1.9 million, which spans over 3,200 square feet of space.
07:54It's a corner unit with three bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms over two levels.
07:59Other amenities in the building itself include a heated Olympic-length pool and a gym.
08:03Now, while Taylor spends much of her time on the East Coast, she still has an L.A. pad
08:07to retreat to.
08:08In 2018, Taylor sold two of her properties in Beverly Hills, a Cape Cod-style cottage
08:13for $4 million and a smaller single-story guesthouse property for just under $3 million.
08:17However, she did hang on to one West Coast property, a 1934 Georgian Revival estate she
08:22bought for $25 million back in 2015.
08:26The mansion formerly belonged to Hollywood producer Samuel Goldwyn until Taylor purchased
08:30it, and it spans 10,982 square feet of space.
08:34Inside the home boasts seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, as well as an old Hollywood vibe
08:38throughout.
08:39Most recently, Taylor gained approval from the Beverly Hills Cultural Heritage Commission
08:43to turn the estate into a historic landmark, and she started to restore it after this.
08:47And maybe one of these could be Taylor's forever-and-always home.
08:50Well, we hope you enjoyed this look at the come-up-and-success story of Taylor Swift.
08:54It seems she's finally out of the woods, so I think it's safe to say she's set for life.
