DANZIG Press Conference on Robbs MetalWorks 1999
Transcript
00:00We've got Danzig in here and the whole band, of course we're going to let Danzig talk a
00:24little about the new CD and Sam Hain has reformed.
00:28So we want to find a little information about what's going on with the band right now.
00:32Sam Hain hasn't reformed.
00:33We haven't got a reformation of Sam Hain?
00:35No, we're just doing like a month of shows here in the US to commemorate the box set
00:40finally coming out and that's it.
00:43We're not doing this fucking stupid Misfits thing where we milk it for like 5 years.
00:47We're just hanging out for a month on the Danzig tour and having a blast and that's
00:52it.
00:52We ain't going to Europe, we're not going to Japan, we're not doing a new record.
00:56We're just having fun and that's it.
01:01What's the new info on the new Danzig CD?
01:05What info do you want?
01:06Kicks ass.
01:07We want it.
01:08Yeah, kicks ass.
01:09It's coming out soon, right?
01:10It's out.
01:11It's out right now, okay.
01:12It came out November 2nd.
01:13We let it out early on the internet and we let people download a couple songs and then
01:18they could also get an alternate cover that was a little too maybe extreme for record
01:24stores and got that like I guess started getting it 2 weeks earlier than the record store released
01:31it and so it's out now.
01:32It's kicking ass.
01:33KDCD's been playing it.
01:34It's a pretty good response from the fans, right?
01:36Yeah, we're number 1 on metal radio this week.
01:38It actually hits magazines so we're kicking ass about it.
01:41It's almost like quirky crap shit.
01:45Yeah.
01:46So if anyone tells you that like hard, dark, you know, metallic music is not happening,
01:52they're lying.
01:53Okay, so you said there was no upcoming tour info for Samhain.
01:56Is there an upcoming dancing tour info?
01:59We're going to Europe for about 3 or 4 weeks, so the end of January, beginning of December
02:05and then we'll see what happens here in America.
02:07Okay.
02:08Have you played a metal fest like Dynamo or a European fest or a metal fest before?
02:12Yeah, we've played lots of festivals over in Europe.
02:14We headlined Dynamo one year and then we played Bizarre Festival and Hip Hop.
02:19What's your opinion of the festivals?
02:21I like Dynamo a lot and I like Russ Gilda and Bizarre Festival.
02:26And also we did a festival in Finland a couple of years ago and we just went back and played Finland.
02:33And it was badass. Finland is awesome.
02:36You're a pretty good fuckin' skater.
02:40Okay, let's start the questions.
02:42Go ahead.
02:43I know Josh and Joey were on the brand new album, but that's the new guitar player, right?
02:47That's the new guitar player, Tot Youth.
02:49Some of you might know him from Herbie's Law or Home Locust.
02:54Some of you might not.
02:58But he's with us now and he definitely kicks ass on anybody else we've had in the lineup.
03:03That's true.
03:06This is obviously kind of a whole new band and everything.
03:11That's not true. Joey's been in the band since 94, that's 5 years.
03:15Joey?
03:17Well, he's been in the band since 96, so that's not so new.
03:22You just hung up on Biscuits and John Christ.
03:25Yeah, come on in, man.
03:32They've been around a long time. It's not fair calling them new guys.
03:35So I have to kind of take offense with that.
03:39They're not new guys, okay?
03:41They've been around a while. It's not fair to them.
03:43Did you ever consider ending the Danzig chapter and starting under a new name or anything like that?
03:51No, it's by name. That's why Ricky and I, when I did the band,
03:54we said we should call it Danzig. Two of the guys from Sammy were gone now.
03:58And I said, okay, it makes more sense. I'll never have to change the name of the band again.
04:02And that's what we're doing.
04:04Originally, the lineup of Danzig was never supposed to last that long with those members.
04:10And I think it lasted too long with those members.
04:12And some of the ideas I wanted to use and go with were darker, harder stuff.
04:19People like Biscuits and Eerie and John just didn't want to get that.
04:22John wanted to go more old school, kind of like egoed out Yngwie stuff.
04:27And I hate that shit.
04:29And I wanted a crunchier, heavier guitar sound.
04:32And John eventually started saying, well, I want to do this cock-rock sound.
04:38I'm not into that.
04:40That's some of the reasons that John was asked to stay.
04:45After Danzig 4, he went away.
04:49Glenn, it's been a few years since the last record.
04:52Can you tell us what else you've been occupying your time with
04:54after the Black Acid Devil tour ended?
04:56I mean, we know Verodik, but we also heard some rumors
04:59maybe about possibly doing some acting and stuff?
05:01No, that had nothing to do with it.
05:03It was basically getting out of our Oliver contract.
05:06We couldn't start a new record until we had our release papers from them.
05:11Otherwise, they could have laid claim to it and tried to put it out.
05:14And they actually did try to do that when a new guy came in.
05:17So lucky we didn't start the record.
05:19It's all legal shit.
05:20But we did go to Europe the past couple of summers.
05:24And now we're here in America and it's all good.
05:27Can you comment on Verodik a little bit more specifically?
05:29Obviously, it's very successful.
05:33Verodik is pretty much kind of like the hated
05:39either hard punk or dark comic company of the comic industry.
05:44Everybody hates us from Todd McFarlane to DC to Marvel
05:48because we just print the most crazy, fucked up,
05:51wild, violent, sexy comics that there is.
05:54And everyone else will just do it real soft
05:57and we'll do it real hard.
05:58And we just fucked up the comic industry
06:00and they're all pissed off about it.
06:01So there you go.
06:02And that's Verodik.
06:04So the new single is Five Finger Crawl, right?
06:07Actually, it wasn't really a single.
06:09We just kind of let people decide what they wanted to play.
06:12Some people started playing Five Finger
06:14and some people started playing Unspeakable.
06:17Is there a video for Five Finger?
06:18There's a video for Five Finger.
06:19It'll probably only get played on the box.
06:21I doubt MTV will play it.
06:24We're going to do a video for Unspeakable when we get back.
06:26And I think we're going to do a video for Belly of the Beast
06:29which we gave a remix of that to the Crow 3 movie.
06:33And what about the double live album
06:35that's supposed to be coming out on Imagine?
06:37Is that still going to happen?
06:38That's going to happen next Christmas.
06:39And it's going to be not just all from one show.
06:41It's going to be part of my settlement
06:43with Ruben and American, or Deaf American,
06:45whatever the fuck he's calling it now.
06:48We've got all the live stuff from 89
06:51all the way up to like now, my set up in Oklahoma.
06:54We're getting back two of the shows
06:57we did on the Oz Fest that they're recording.
06:59And I think we're going to record a show on this tour.
07:02So it'll be like 100, 120 minutes of live dancing
07:05from 89 all the way up to now.
07:07Is that going to be accompanied with a home video too?
07:09We filmed a documentary movie on the How the Gods Kill tour
07:13both here in the States and in Europe.
07:17And that'll all come out.
07:18And tons of other stuff.
07:19Home video stuff.
07:21Some crazy shit no one's seen.
07:23Who over here?
07:27Somebody over here had a question?
07:29Okay.
07:30Since we're talking about record...
07:32Go ahead, bro.
07:33Go ahead, Paul.
07:34Does the music ever live through the art or vice versa?
07:38What do you mean?
07:39Do you ever have a song and see it as a picture
07:43or create a picture and then...
07:46It's all different.
07:47Sometimes you'll see a song in your head
07:49and it's a picture or it's an idea.
07:52But sometimes you'll...
07:54You know, you just visualize where it's going.
07:57Usually I let songs take me where they want to take me
07:59when I'm doing them.
08:00And then these start getting longer.
08:04And we take them a little bit farther.
08:09Go ahead.
08:10Go ahead, man.
08:11Do you feel that this album is heavier than Five?
08:14I know it has more guitars that are in your face
08:18and the industrial seems a little bit more subtle
08:20than the last one did.
08:21I don't know
08:23because I thought some of the heats on the last record
08:25were just like boom-crushing.
08:27So maybe it's heavier in a different way.
08:30It's definitely more guitar-oriented.
08:32We wanted more guitar.
08:33It was a guitar that was buried on the last record.
08:35So we wanted to make sure the guitar
08:37was really in your face on this one.
08:39And you also recorded...
08:41Instead of...
08:42You recorded digital with vocals, right?
08:44Yes.
08:45How was that?
08:46Was that like a whole new experience?
08:47Yeah.
08:48The last record that we did
08:50all the basic tracks analog
08:52and then did all the overtracks
08:54and the vocals digital
08:56into the computer.
08:57Is it better than analog?
08:58I like it better.
09:01How much longer is Zanzibar going to be around?
09:03Because the past couple of years
09:04I felt like y'all were going to die out.
09:06I've been waiting forever.
09:09Zanzibar will just keep going
09:10I guess until I die.
09:13We're just getting started right now, man.
09:15It's the beginning of the chapter
09:17and it's fucking...
09:18It's on.
09:21The new record's awesome.
09:22The new band is...
09:24The fucking shows are insane.
09:25The band really clicks.
09:26And as far as this lineup
09:28and this version of the band
09:29it's just...
09:30I mean, this is just
09:32the mere beginning of it.
09:34Are y'all going to open any...
09:35I mean, like, making more home videos?
09:37More video?
09:39Yeah, we're going to put out...
09:40I got a lot of stuff back from Reuben, too.
09:42And from Hot.
09:45I mean, it's a killer video
09:46from the last record for Sepentia
09:47that Hollywood wouldn't let get released.
09:50This guy who did this underground movie
09:52about hell and stuff
09:54called Elias Carhige
09:57he did the video for it.
10:00And it's pretty crazy
10:02that Disney wouldn't let it get released.
10:04So now you see it.
10:06Go ahead.
10:07Glenn, Imagine is a company that
10:09I guess promotes that they
10:11will utilize the internet as a medium
10:13to sell records and publicize bands.
10:16How do you feel about that?
10:17Yeah, it's cool.
10:22Is there going to be another
10:23Black Aria album?
10:24Yeah.
10:25Probably next year.
10:26Cool.
10:27Is the old one going to be
10:28reissued through Imagine also?
10:29Yeah, the old one will be
10:30reissued in about a month or so.
10:32And then the Sandvina box set
10:33is finally going to come out.
10:36We're re-releasing Black Asset Devil
10:38with three extra tracks
10:39and also the Sacrifice
10:41remix EP that Fetus did
10:43you know, June Thurwell.
10:44I don't have three extra tracks
10:45some different mixes
10:47of that song Deep
10:49that was on X-Files.
10:52In the back.
10:53I don't know if this is already
10:54being asked but is the
10:55Sandvina box set going to be
10:56released?
10:57Yeah, just everything.
11:02It's going to have a bunch
11:03of unreleased tracks on it
11:04besides the whole
11:05Sandvina catalog.
11:06It's going to have a bunch
11:07of unreleased tracks.
11:08Is there going to be a video with it?
11:09Yeah, there's going to be
11:10a video with it.
11:11There's going to be two live CDs.
11:12There'll be versions
11:13like Sandvina's original
11:14versions of Twist the Cane
11:15and Possession
11:16and Trouble
11:17and then there's
11:18a really fast version
11:19of Lords of the Left Hand
11:20on there
11:21and then there's
11:22an alternate version
11:23of The Howl
11:24called The Howl 2
11:25a little more tribal
11:26and crazy.
11:27It'll be a cool package.
11:28Is any of that stuff
11:29remixed or is it
11:30a straight reissue?
11:31Just straight reissue.
11:33Are you finally through
11:34with all the record label
11:35shooting up Fetus?
11:36Yeah, that's why
11:37I did this.
11:38Once we were free
11:39of the whole
11:40you know, Hollywood thing
11:41and then also
11:42the litigation
11:43between Rick
11:44and his
11:45come back
11:46Ripoff label
11:47I started talking
11:48with all the major
11:49labels again
11:50and just said
11:51this is bullshit
11:52and then Christoph
11:53called me
11:54and I'd known him
11:55from when he
11:56was at BMG
11:57which was our label
11:58in Germany
11:59and he told me
12:00about this thing
12:01he was partying
12:02and as we started
12:03talking
12:04I just realized
12:05this was what
12:06was going to be
12:07best for the band
12:08we have total control
12:09we can sign acts
12:10lots of good stuff
12:11so it's just
12:12I was reading
12:13the Metal Edge
12:14and it showed
12:15a list of a lot
12:16of Sam Haynes albums
12:17that aren't available
12:18anymore
12:19they're all going
12:20to come out
12:21will be patched
12:22yeah, all going
12:23to be reissued
12:24they'll be out
12:25in a box set
12:26then we'll issue
12:27them all
12:28what label
12:29are they going
12:30to be on?
12:31My label
12:32Legal Live
12:33yeah, through
12:34Imagine
12:35few more questions
12:36what about
12:37live acts
12:38for the next
12:39leg of the tour
12:40in the US
12:42yeah, but their
12:43girlfriends wouldn't
12:44let them go on tour
12:45true story
12:46I can tell you
12:47who they were
12:48but I don't want
12:49to embarrass them
12:50but um
12:51yeah, it's really
12:52funny there were
12:53a couple bands
12:54in the US
12:55some supposed
12:56like, you know
12:57new metal bands
12:58it was because
12:59they heard that
13:00I wanted a black
13:01metal band
13:02to open up
13:03on the bill
13:04they said
13:05they wouldn't
13:06be on the tour
13:07if I told you
13:08their names
13:09you'd be
13:10really shocked
13:11what about
13:12one of the bands
13:13named after
13:14the Deep Purple
13:15record
13:16oh man
13:17ok, who's got
13:18another question?
13:19everybody goes
13:20oh man
13:21that didn't
13:22take long
13:23to figure out
13:24we weren't
13:25hip enough
13:26is one of
13:27the quotes
13:28let me ask
13:29Steve
13:30a question
13:31what have
13:32you been doing
13:33for the last
13:3410 years
13:35or so
13:36I've been
13:37doing a lot
13:38of fucked up
13:39shit on my computer
13:40a lot of
13:41cool ampegs
13:42I got
13:43a band
13:44called China
13:45we'll put out
13:46some CDs
13:47and shit
13:48yeah, you can
13:49get the CD
13:50if you want
13:51to check it out
13:52down at the
13:53you know
13:54the concession
13:55I was wondering
13:56is there anybody
13:57we can get
13:58a hold of
13:59somebody
14:00oh my
14:01this bitch
14:02shows
14:03did y'all
14:04did y'all
14:05did y'all have
14:06any of
14:07it recorded
14:08for a long time
14:09I know
14:10that Caroline
14:11got a bunch
14:12of that stuff
14:13when we sold
14:14all the stuff
14:15to Caroline
14:16I mean like
14:17the box set
14:18it gives a lot
14:19of information
14:20but I just
14:21wanted to see
14:22something live
14:23see when I
14:24originally
14:25put that box
14:26set together
14:27and gave it
14:28to Caroline
14:29it had tons
14:30of cool shit
14:31in there
14:32unreleased tracks
14:33it had live
14:34stuff with you
14:35so I had nothing
14:36to do with that
14:37box set
14:38but we do have
14:39something to do
14:40with the Samhain
14:41box set
14:42so we're putting
14:43together a killer
14:44package
14:45he's giving me
14:46lots of photos
14:47and so is one
14:48and we got tons
14:49of cool shit
14:50it's gonna be
14:51pretty bad
14:52when's the
14:53Samhain box
14:54hopefully January
14:55we're too late
14:56to make it
14:57for Christmas
14:58because we're
14:59doing this thing
15:00so
15:01yeah
15:02it's gonna
15:04What bands influenced you?
15:05Huh?
15:06What bands
15:07influenced you?
15:08What bands?
15:09Uh
15:10let's see
15:11I mean when I was a kid
15:12I remember
15:13seeing Elvis Presley
15:14on TV
15:15New York's Rock
15:16and he was still
15:17a badass
15:18and then like
15:19Velvet Underground
15:20and stuff like that
15:21but I remember
15:22the first Black Sabbath
15:23record just like
15:24changed my whole life
15:25because I saw
15:26this record
15:27and there was like
15:28this chick
15:29in a fucking
15:30hole in the sea
15:31town
15:32and I was like
15:33what do you mean
15:34changed?
15:35What do you mean?
15:36Oh
15:37yeah
15:38Sabbath
15:39a lot of
15:40early punk shit
15:41I think more
15:42of the earlier
15:43punk shit
15:44the shit that
15:45really made me
15:46want to play
15:47were bands
15:48like
15:49Motörhead
15:50and The Roombas
15:51or probably
15:52Bad Brains
15:53Black Flag
15:54was definitely
15:55life changing
15:56for me
15:57Misfits
15:58Misfits
15:59On the way
16:00up here
16:01we were discussing
16:02the campaign
16:03to dancing
16:04well the Misfits
16:05actually kind of
16:06just broke up
16:07no just like
16:08the change in the music
16:09what caused it?
16:10I just wanted to
16:11make it a little
16:12more real
16:13and the Misfits
16:14was just becoming
16:15this like
16:16kind of comic book
16:17kiss thing
16:18and I was never
16:19a big kiss fan
16:20so
16:21a little more real
16:22a little darker
