00:00Hey guys, another video for our food and eating in Japan playlist.
00:04After a recent video we made from McDonald's, one of our patrons asked if McDonald's Japan
00:10was still losing money, because they announced a few years ago they were losing big money
00:14in Japan, mostly because Japanese people treat McDonald's as something they rarely have.
00:20Most Japanese people don't have it regularly.
00:22Some do, but most don't.
00:24And there are also so many better, tastier, cheaper options.
00:29So there used to be a McDonald's right here in this shopping center, until a month or
00:33so ago, and they just came along and ripped it out.
00:36So what McDonald's Japan has been doing, any of the stores that haven't been profitable,
00:40they've just shut them down.
00:43And just in our area, there's been three or four over the last five or six years that
00:49have been shut down because they weren't profitable.
00:51So these guys are clever.
00:52Lotteria has put their big sign right outside where the McDonald's used to be, with a little
00:59sign saying that they're on the second floor.
01:01So that's very clever, because customers are coming along looking for McDonald's, McDonald's
01:05is closed, oh, Lotteria's on the second floor, let's go up there.
01:09So Lotteria is a Japanese version of McDonald's, it's pretty similar.
01:13Some people prefer it to McDonald's, some people prefer McDonald's, but it's sort of
01:17similar.
01:18Sort of similar, they have some interesting things on there.
01:21They're specializing in a pork rib burger at the moment, which is obviously a bit of
01:26a copy of the previous McDonald's one.
01:30So very clever.
01:31So yeah, in that battle between Lotteria and McDonald's, in this particular shopping center,
01:36Lotteria won.
01:37They're still there, McDonald's is gone.
01:39So that's the answer to our friend's question, that's what's happening.
01:42The ones that aren't profitable, they shut them down.
01:45More videos coming soon.
