00:00Hey guys probably gonna put this video on our nature and environment in Japan
00:04playlist. Now if I was a Japanese television person I would be wearing a
00:12helmet right now because I'd be reporting on the typhoon that is coming.
00:17So what happens every year when it's typhoon season is the weather bureau
00:23forecast where the weather typhoon is going to travel and then they issue
00:28warnings for the typhoon in different areas and what happens whenever there's
00:33a warning issued as we saw with the recent warning about the earthquake
00:37which was an unprecedented warning we never had that before but they they
00:41warned us there was an increased chance in that week there'd be earthquake and
00:45tidal waves so as a result of that lots of events were cancelled. So this week
00:51what we saw is after they issued the typhoon warning this time of year
00:55usually there's lots of fireworks festivals and music festivals and all
00:59sorts of things because it's the end of the summer holidays and this area is
01:03usually jumping is absolutely jumping this time of year with people all over
01:07the place and people in the water and music events here at night and have big
01:12fireworks displays and all sorts of stuff and it's all been cancelled
01:15because there's a typhoon coming see so it's sort of automatic so our dojo is
01:25well there's no martial arts tonight because the dojo has been closed because
01:30of the typhoon and we've had we had some people were supposed to meet tomorrow
01:34and they sent a message and said oh we won't meet you tomorrow because of the
01:37typhoon right nobody looks out the window what they do every time is as
01:42soon as the warning is issued the public buildings close, the events cancel, and that's the end of it so it's sort of a little bit frustrating really
01:53sometimes when you have plans like we were really looking forward to this fireworks festival they have here it's excellent and it's out over the water and so you get a reflection off the water and it's
02:02absolutely excellent thing to do and obviously tonight I mean it was supposed
02:07to start about two hours from now right right so it could it could well happen
02:13couldn't it but it's been cancelled so I mean it's sort of it's sort of good
02:18obviously the Weather Bureau has to be conservative and has to always sort of
02:23give the the most extreme warning you know the most extreme case as they did
02:29with the earthquake warning so always they always do that you know that there
02:33could be damaging wind and there could be high waves was the forecast for here
02:37was supposed to be high waves so they always do the give the most extreme
02:42possibility I guess and then the groups the both the the government groups and
02:49the private groups and businesses all react as if it's real so lots of
02:54businesses closed today as well shops closed early all the usual stuff that
03:00happens when there's these typhoon warnings so it's sort of it's it's not
03:05surprising that the Weather Bureau be conservative and issue you know the
03:09worst possible case scenario and it's it's sort of sensible or reasonable that
03:19that it's reacted to the way it is the sort of the point of this video is two
03:22things one is if you find yourself in Japan and you hear of a typhoon warning
03:27or an earthquake warning or something and you see everything cancelled and
03:31closed and you know the people in our area where we live have closed all the
03:35shutters on their houses and that a lot of the businesses do that too they close
03:38early and put their shutters down and you get the impression something really
03:42really bad is about to happen so just my advice would be from what I've seen if
03:47there are warnings like that then you should obviously listen to them and take
03:51precautions to make sure that you're safe however don't let the reaction to
03:57the warning cause you any stress or panic because it's just what they do
04:02every time I mean I think this typhoon is number 10 for the year they number
04:06them and I think this is the 10th typhoon we've had this year and you get
04:10this every time these big reactions and everything's cancelled our friends
04:14cancelled the thing for tomorrow without even waiting to see what the weather
04:18tomorrow was like just because there's been the typhoon warning and there's a
04:21pretty good chance I'd be willing to bet you tomorrow this is what it's going to
04:25be like right obviously not not life-threatening you know but what
04:30you've got is you've got the warning that's issued and then the news
04:33presenters that's what I referred to at the start the news presenters would
04:36come to a place like this and they'd be standing here with their helmet they
04:40always wear a helmet when there's a typhoon coming and that yes the typhoon
04:44is 500 kilometers to the southeast and it's expected to arrive here tomorrow
04:49and people are taking precautions and locking up their businesses and their
04:53houses and putting down their shutters and they'll be reporting with a helmet
04:56on their head while normal people are just walking around in the background
05:00it's really funny and it happens every time I think we showed you on a video
05:04years ago years ago there was a person standing with their helmet on like this
05:08and in the background was just people just strolling around having a nice day
05:12you know that's what they do and then when the typhoon gets closer if it does
05:16get windy and rainy they'll be standing there with a helmet on and an umbrella
05:19right which is sort of funny because it was a serious typhoon it would blow away
05:23wouldn't it so high seas that's what they predicted for here high seas have a
05:30look I see strong winds so it's just it's fair you know it's good that
05:38they're conservative but yeah that's the message of this video the message is if
05:42you're here and you and there's some warnings take the precautions that you
05:46should take to be to make sure that you're safe however don't panic don't
05:53panic or or you know when you see everybody else around you reacting to it
05:57fairly vigorously won't say panic but it tends to be big reactions you know let's
06:04cancel everything let's not go anywhere let's not do anything you know let's put
06:09the shutters down and stay inside and on a day like this that all the shutters
06:14are closed so when you see that happening don't don't let it make you
06:16nervous or make you panic because it's probably going to just be like this I
06:21mean I should add to in where the where the typhoon actually was centered it did
06:29do a lot of damage usually what happens just just before I finish up the most
06:33dangerous place to be in a typhoon is not usually at the beach usually the
06:37beach is usually not a risk usually the risk is in the mountains in the valleys
06:41in the steep valleys up in the mountains usually that's where they have problems
06:46and in this typhoon that there were five people killed by landslides usually
06:54landslides and flash floods are the biggest risk in the typhoons that's that
06:58seems to hurt more people than anything else occasionally someone will fall into
07:05a river or something but usually it's in the it's in the valleys in the mountains
07:08because what happens up there you get landslides that just wipe out houses
07:12that's what we saw this week and five people were lost and the other one is
07:17flash floods because those valleys when the really rains hard and that the rain
07:21can be heavy in these typhoon can be really really heavy and so you get a lot
07:25of water come down a narrow valley obviously that can make a serious flash
07:28flood so they are legitimately they can be dangerous but statistically
07:35statistically 127 million people and five people killed by the typhoon you
07:40know it's statistically it's more dangerous walking down the street or
07:44walking across the street than it is being killed by a typhoon so you know
07:50but because because there are there is that danger they tend to treat it like
07:55it's dangerous no matter where you are which isn't always the case it's
07:59actually very pleasant here right now isn't it little cool breeze because
08:04we've had a fair bit of rain it's sort of cool the temperatures come down from
08:0736 37 down to about 31 32 there's a nice little breeze it's actually very
08:14very pleasant so shame there's no fireworks however if the fireworks were
08:20still going ahead you'd be looking at thousands of people here right now
08:24thousands of people might be all sitting here looking at me talking to myself
08:29anyway there was that more videos coming soon
08:37you
