Virtues of reciting Surah al-Kahf on Friday
There are sahih Ahadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) concerning the virtues of reciting Surah al-Kahf during the day or night of Jumu’ah (Friday). These include:
[1] From Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, who said: “Whoever reads Surat al-Kahf on the night of Jumu’ah, will have a light that will stretch between him and the Ka’bah.” (Narrated by al-Darimi, 3407. This hadith was classed as sahih by Shaykh al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami’, 6471)
[2] Another hadith narrates: “Whoever reads Surat al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah, will have a light that will shine from him from one Friday to the next.” (Narrated by al-Hakim, 2/399; al-Bayhaqi, 3/249)
[3] Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘Whoever reads Surat al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah, a light will shine for him from beneath his feet to the clouds of the sky, which will shine for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be forgiven (his sins) between the two Fridays.’”
When to read Surat al-Kahf on Friday?
Surat al-Kahf may be read during the night or on the day of Jumu’ah. The night of Jumu’ah starts from sunset on Thursday, and the day of Jumu’ah ends at sunset. Therefore the time for reading this surah extends from sunset on Thursday to sunset on Friday.
Imām Bukhāri and Imām Muslim have recorded from al-Barā’, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: “A man read sūrah al-Kahf, and in the house was a steed which began to shy; so he [the man] looked and there was a fog or cloud which had enveloped him. He mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ (who) said: Recite O so-and-so, for it was tranquillity descending because of the Qur’ān.
Surah al Kahf as protection from the Dajjal
A ḥadīth about preserving (ḥifẓ) ten verses from the beginning of sūrah al-Kahf is ṣahīh, Imam Muslim has extracted it in his ṣahīh [his compilation of authenticated narrations] from Abu al-Dardā’, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet ﷺ [who] said: “Whosoever preserves ten verses from the beginning of sūrah al-Kahf is protected from the the trial of al-Dajjāl”.

00:00In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
00:11All praise is due to Allah, Who has sent down to His servant the Book, and has not made it crooked,
00:23to warn of a severe punishment from Him, and to give good news to the believers who do righteous deeds, that they will have a good reward,
00:45in which they will remain forever, and to warn those who say,
00:52Allah has taken a son.
00:55They have no knowledge of it, nor do their fathers.
01:03It is a great word that comes out of their mouths. They say nothing but lies.
01:13So perhaps you will cause yourself to weep over their footsteps, if they do not believe in this hadith.
01:26Indeed, We have made what is on the earth an adornment for it, that We may test them as to which of them is best in deed.
01:37Indeed, We have made what is on the earth an adornment for it, that We may test them as to which of them is best in deed.
01:45Or do you think that the companions of the cave and the rock were of Our signs in wonder?
01:56When the young men turned to the cave and said,
02:01Our Lord, give us mercy from Yourself, and make easy for us the right course of our affair.
02:12So We struck their ears in the cave for a number of years.
02:20Then We raised them up that We might know which of the two parties was best in that which they stayed for a long time.
02:32We relate to you their story in truth. Indeed, they were young men who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.
02:45And We struck their hearts when they stood up and said,
02:51Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We will not invoke other than Him a deity. We have already said,
03:10These are a people who have taken besides Him deities. Why do they not come to them with a clear solution?
03:28So who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah?
03:36And when you have withdrawn from them and they worship none but Allah, then go to the cave.
03:50Your Lord will spread for you from His mercy and make easy for you the right course of your affair.
04:04And you will see the sun, when it rises, move away from their cave to the right,
04:12and when it sets, you will approach them to the left, and they will be in a gap from it.
04:21That is from the signs of Allah. Whoever Allah guides, he is the guided one.
04:30And whoever He sends astray, you will not find for him a guardian who will guide him.
04:39And you will think of them as pillows, while they are beds.
04:45And We will turn them to the right and to the left.
04:51And their dog, spread out his arms in the middle.
04:58If you had looked at them, you would have turned away from them, fleeing, and you would have been filled with terror from them.
05:09And thus did We resurrect them that they might ask one another.
05:17A speaker from among them will say,
05:22How long have you stayed?
05:24They will say, We stayed a day or part of a day.
05:29They will say, Your Lord knows best how long you stayed,
05:34so resurrect one of you with this paper to the city,
05:45and let him see which of them is purer in food, and let him bring you provision from him,
06:03and let him receive a reward, and let him not perceive of you anyone.
06:09Indeed, if they appear before you, they will stone you or repeat you in their religion,
06:20and you will not succeed, then, ever.
06:28And thus did We make it easy for them that they might know that the promise of Allah is true
06:38and that the Hour, there is no doubt about it.
06:44When they disputed among themselves over their affair, they said,
06:50They will build upon them a building.
06:54Their Lord is most knowing of them.
06:57Those who were victorious over their affair will say,
07:02We will surely take upon them a masjid.
07:15They will say, Three, the fourth of them is their dog,
07:20and they will say, Five, the sixth of them is their dog,
07:25striking in the unseen.
07:29And they will say, Seven, the eighth of them is their dog.
07:35Say, My Lord knows best their number.
07:40None knows them except a few.
07:44And you will not discuss among them except an open meeting.
07:53And you will not inquire among them of any of them.
07:58And you will not say of anything,
08:02Indeed, I will do that tomorrow,
08:08except that Allah wills.
08:16And remember your Lord when you forget,
08:19and say, It may be that He will guide me to my Lord,
08:24that He may bring nearer to this the right way.
08:28And they stayed in their cave three hundred years,
08:34and they increased nine.
08:37Say, Allah knows best what they stayed in.
08:41To Him is the unseen of the heavens and the earth.
08:45Observe Him and listen.
08:48They have no protector other than Him,
08:54and He does not associate anyone with Him in His judgment.
09:00And recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord.
09:08There is no substitute for His words,
09:12and you will not find besides Him any refuge.
09:20So be patient with those who invoke their Lord morning and evening,
09:29desiring His Face.
09:32And let not your eyes deviate from them,
09:35desiring the adornment of the life of this world.
09:40And do not obey him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance,
09:46and who follows his desire, and whose affair is ever divided.
09:54And say, The truth is from your Lord,
09:58so whoever wills, let him believe,
10:03and whoever wills, let him disbelieve.
10:08Indeed, We have prepared for the wrongdoers a Fire,
10:15encircling them is its surroundings.
10:19And if they seek to escape, they will be drowned in water like oil,
10:27burning their faces.
10:30Evil is the drink, and evil is the reward.
10:37Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds,
10:43indeed, We do not waste the reward of one who does a good deed.
10:49Those will have Gardens of Eternity beneath which rivers flow.
10:59They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold,
11:05and they will be wearing green garments of silk,
11:18and they will be reclining therein on couches.
11:28Excellent is the reward, and excellent is the reward.
11:35And set forth for them the example of two men.
11:39We made for one of them two gardens of grapes,
11:46and We surrounded them with date palms,
11:53and We made between them a field.
11:58She ate of the two gardens and gave her food,
12:03and she did not wrong any of them,
12:07and We caused a river to flow through them.
12:14And he had a fruit,
12:17and he said to his companion while he was speaking to him,
12:26I am more perfect than you and more powerful than the others.
12:33And he entered his garden while he was wronging himself.
12:40He said, I do not think that this will ever perish,
12:50and I do not think the Hour will ever come.
12:57And if I should be returned to my Lord,
13:01I would certainly find better than it in return.
13:13His companion said to him while he was speaking to him,
13:19Do you disbelieve in the One who created you from dust and then from a sperm,
13:37and then proportioned you to a man?
13:41But He is Allah, my Lord,
13:46and I do not associate anyone with my Lord.
13:52And why did you not, when you entered your garden, say,
13:59What Allah wills, there is no power except with Allah.
14:12If you see that I am less than you in wealth and children,
14:20then perhaps my Lord will give me better than your garden
14:29And He will send upon it a gust of wind from the sky,
14:37and it will become a rising cloud.
14:43Or its water will become deep,
14:49and you will not be able to ask for it.
14:56And his fruit will be surrounded,
14:59and he will turn his hands over what he has spent on it,
15:07while it is lying on its thrones,
15:14and he will say, I wish I had not associated anyone with my Lord.
15:22And there would not have been for him a party to help him other than Allah,
15:30nor would he have been able to help.
15:34That is the true loyalty to Allah.
15:40He is the best in reward and the best in punishment.
15:48And present to them the example of the life of this world
15:53as if We had sent it down from the sky,
16:06and the plants of the earth mixed with it,
16:12and the wind blew it away.
16:19And Allah is over all things competent.
16:29Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world,
16:35and the good deeds that remain are better with your Lord in reward and better in hope.
16:50And on the Day when We will cover the mountains and you will see the earth standing out,
16:57and We will gather them together, and We will not leave anyone of them.
17:04And they will be presented before your Lord in rows,
17:08saying, You have come to Us as We created you the first time.
17:15But you claimed that We would not make for you an appointment.
17:22And the Book will be placed, and you will see the criminals in awe of what is in it,
17:30and they will say, O woe to us! What is this Book?
17:38It leaves not a small thing or a great thing except its contents.
17:47And they will find that which they did is present.
17:52And your Lord does not wrong anyone.
17:56And when We said to the angels,
18:01They prostrated to Adam, but they prostrated except Iblis.
18:12He was of the jinn, and he disobeyed the commandment of his Lord.
18:18Will you then take him and his progeny as allies instead of Me, while they are to you enemies?
18:30Evil is the exchange for the wrongdoers.
18:34I did not make them witness the creation of the heavens and the earth,
18:41nor the creation of themselves.
18:48And I would not take the astray as an ally.
18:56And the Day will come when they will say, Call the partners of Mine whom you claimed,
19:04but they called them, but they did not respond to them,
19:10and We placed between them a barrier.
19:15And the criminals will see the Fire, and they will think that they will fall therein.
19:25And they will not find from it any place to turn.
19:30And We have indeed extended in this Qur'an for the people every kind of example.
19:39And man is ever, most of all, a matter of dispute.
19:48And what prevented the people from believing when guidance came to them
19:56and they asked forgiveness of their Lord, except that the way of the former peoples should come to them,
20:07or that the punishment should come to them readily.
20:12And We do not send the messengers except as bearers of good tidings and warners.
20:20And those who disbelieve dispute by falsehood that they may cover up with it the truth
20:27and take My signs, and they are not warned in mockery.
20:39And who is more astray than one who is reminded of the signs of his Lord,
20:45but turns away from them and forgets what his hands have sent forth?
20:50Indeed, We have placed upon their hearts a barrier that they may understand it,
20:58and in their ears is deafness.
21:03And if you invite them to guidance, then they will never be guided.
21:12And your Lord is Forgiving, Possessor of Mercy.
21:16If He had seized them for what they earned, He would have hastened for them the punishment.
21:25But for them is a promise which they will not find other than it.
21:34And those cities We destroyed when they wronged,
21:43and We made for their destruction a promise.
21:50And when Moses said to his son,
21:53I will not leave until I reach the junction of the two seas or pass a period.
22:03So when they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish.
22:10So he took his way in the sea, fleeing.
22:16So when they had passed, he said to his son,
22:20Give us our lunch.
22:25Indeed, we have received from our journey this reward.
22:31He said, Do you see when we turned to the rock,
22:37indeed I forgot the fish.
22:41And I did not forget it, except that Satan made me remember it.
22:48And he took his way in the sea, wondering.
22:53He said, That is what we were seeking.
22:57So they returned to their footprints, telling stories.
23:04So they found a servant of Our servants.
23:09We gave him mercy from Us,
23:14and We taught him from Ourself knowledge.
23:20Moses said to him,
23:22Shall I follow you so that you may teach me from what you have been taught, rightly?
23:31He said, Indeed, you will not be able with me to be patient.
23:38And how can you be patient on that in which you have no knowledge?
23:44He said, You will find me, if Allah wills, patient.
23:54And I will not disobey you in any matter.
23:58He said, So if you follow me, do not ask me for anything,
24:05until I bring to you from it a reminder.
24:13So they set off, until, when they boarded the ship, he broke it.
24:23He said, Did you break it to drown its people?
24:28You have come to a bad end.
24:31He said, Did I not say, Indeed, you will not be able with me to be patient?
24:39He said, Do not take me for what I have forgotten,
24:43and do not make difficult for me my affair.
24:48So they set off, until, when they met a boy, he killed him.
24:58He said, Did you kill a pure soul without a soul?
25:05You have come to a bad end.
25:10He said, Did I not say, Indeed, you will not be able with me to be patient?
25:19He said, If I ask you for anything after this, do not accompany me.
25:28You have reached from me an excuse.
25:33So they set off, until, when they came to the people of a town,
25:43they asked for food from its people, but they refused to host them.
25:52So they found in it a wall which they wanted to break, so they erected it.
26:01He said, If you willed, you would have taken a reward for it.
26:07He said, This is the separation between me and you.
26:12I will inform you of the interpretation of that over which you were not able to be patient.
26:21As for the ship, it belonged to poor people who worked in the sea,
26:29so I wanted to destroy it.
26:32And there was behind them a king who seized every ship by force.
26:42And as for the boy, his parents were believers,
26:48so we feared that he would cause them to be oppressed and disbelieve.
26:59So we wanted to replace them with their Lord,
27:05better than Him in purity and nearer to mercy.
27:12As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city,
27:20and beneath it was a treasure for them, and their father was righteous.
27:29So your Lord intended that they should reach maturity,
27:36and that He should take out of their treasure a mercy from your Lord.
27:48And I did not do it by my command.
27:52That is the interpretation of that over which you were not able to be patient.
28:00And they ask you about Dhul-Qarnayn.
28:06Say, I will recite to you from him a reminder.
28:12Indeed, We have established for him in the land,
28:17and We have given him of everything a way.
28:24So he followed a way.
28:27Until, when he reached the setting of the sun,
28:33he found it setting in a boiling spring,
28:37and he found with it a people.
28:41We said, O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish,
28:48or you take in them good.
28:54He said, As for the wrongdoer, we will punish him,
29:00then he will be returned to his Lord,
29:08and He will punish him with a terrible punishment.
29:14And as for he who believes and does good,
29:19for him is the reward of good.
29:24And We will say to him of Our command,
29:29Then he followed a way.
29:33Until, when he reached the setting of the sun,
29:38he found it rising upon a people
29:41whom We had not made a cover for them besides it.
29:47Thus it was, and We seized with what he had of knowledge.
29:53Then he followed a way.
29:58Until, when he reached between the two mountains,
30:04he found besides them a people
30:12who could hardly understand a word.
30:18They said, O Dhul-Qarnayn,
30:21Indeed, Ya'juj and Ma'juj are corrupters in the land,
30:27so shall we make for you an expense
30:34that you make a barrier between us and them?
30:41He said, What my Lord has established for me is better,
30:48so help me with strength
30:55that I may make a barrier between you and them.
31:00Give me the sacks of iron.
31:04Until, when he reached between the two mountains,
31:10he said, Blow!
31:14Until, when he made it a fire, he said,
31:20Give me, I will pour upon it a drop.
31:28But they could not remove it,
31:34nor could they make a cover for it.
31:38He said, This is a mercy from my Lord.
31:44So when the promise of my Lord came,
31:49He made it sound,
31:53and the promise of my Lord was true.
31:59And We left some of them that Day
32:04to waver among themselves,
32:07and the trumpet was blown,
32:09and We gathered them together.
32:13And We presented Hell, that Day,
32:17to the disbelievers as a display,
32:21whose eyes were covered from My remembrance,
32:30and they could not hear.
32:37Did those who disbelieved think
32:41that they would take My servants as allies besides Me?
32:50Indeed, We have prepared Hell
32:58for the disbelievers as a descent.
33:02Say, Shall We inform you of the losers in deeds
33:11whose effort has gone astray
33:14in the life of this world,
33:16while they think that they are doing good?
33:27Those are the ones who disbelieved
33:31in the signs of their Lord and in meeting Him.
33:37So their deeds were in vain,
33:40so We will not give them a weight on the Day of Resurrection.
33:46That is their recompense,
33:51Hell, because they disbelieved
33:55and took My signs and My messengers as a mockery.
34:06Indeed, those who believed and did righteous deeds,
34:12they will have the Gardens of Paradise as a descent,
34:23abiding therein.
34:26They will not desire from it any change.
34:31Say, If the sea were an extension
34:35of the words of my Lord,
34:38the sea would surely overflow
34:42before the words of my Lord would overflow,
34:49even if We brought with it the like of it.
34:57Say, I am only a human being like you.
35:03It is revealed to me that your God is one God.
35:16So whoever hopes to meet his Lord,
35:22let him do righteous deeds
35:28and associate no one with the worship of his Lord.
