Traffic Cops S15E07 (30 Jan 2017)
Transcript
00:00Britain's roads have become the front line in the fight against crime and disorder.
00:08From organised criminal gangs to the nation's worst drivers.
00:13And catching those using our streets to break the law is the job of the traffic cops.
00:19Stop. Do not resist.
00:22First, first, first. Chase it on foot.
00:25We'll chase them and we'll get hold of them and we'll go wherever we need to go to stop you.
00:29Tonight on Traffic Cops, high speed.
00:32He's had a collision with a member of the public in November.
00:35Car thieves. Shut up. You're locked up, pal.
00:37Theft of motor vehicle.
00:39Career criminals.
00:41There's actually probably up to a grander of stuff here.
00:44And those who won't go down without a fight.
00:51Welcome to Yorkshire, one of the biggest beats in Britain.
00:56From urban sprawl to the Yorkshire Dales, where every day the police face a different challenge.
01:03I can walk down a street and I can go, he assaults people, he deals drugs, he's a burglar, he's a car thief.
01:12Go on, mate. Go on.
01:13Sometimes you think, when I drive to work, am I going across a line where just different rules apply?
01:19Get down, get down, get down.
01:27Nowadays, being a traffic cop isn't just about picking up the pieces at bad crashes.
01:33More often than not, it's about hunting down criminals in cars.
01:37From vehicle thieves and burglars to shoplifters and drug runners,
01:41it's all in a day's work for the traffic cops of North and West Yorkshire.
01:49It's 4.30pm in North Yorkshire.
01:53It's 4.30pm in North Yorkshire.
01:56Traffic cop Sergeant Julian Pearson has been called on to assist in the pursuit of a runaway Audi.
02:17You've got to ask yourself the question, why are they fleeing?
02:20Is there somebody or something in that vehicle that they don't want to be found with?
02:37The driver failed to stop for a routine document check.
02:43And now he's using one of the country's major roads, the A1, to run from the police.
02:50Service road, unmade road.
02:53And back on.
02:55Stand by.
02:56He's weaving in and out of traffic.
02:59He's onto the hard shoulder.
03:01Stand by.
03:06Julian is used to pursuing reckless drivers,
03:09but the risks this one is taking to escape the police defy belief.
03:14He's collected some cones which are now in the front of his vehicle.
03:18He's currently A1 southbound.
03:22This guy drives straight through the cones, gets cones stuck under his front wheel when there's road workers there,
03:27and he's doing 130 through the road workers, which is a 50.
03:30He's almost tripled the speed limit.
03:32He's continuing, continuing.
03:35A1M southbound.
03:37Leaming. We're into the three-lane section.
03:41He's using the offside gutter to get past vehicles.
03:46This isn't somebody who committed a minor offence.
03:49The way that they are driving, lane three, to hard shoulders, to undertaking, to overtaking,
03:54at 130 miles an hour, it's somebody who has committed or is committing a serious offence.
04:01The driver is now seriously endangering other road users.
04:07Yeah, he's had a collision.
04:09A Peugeot 107, he's stuck his wing in the loft.
04:13It's vital that Julian and the team stop him as quickly as possible.
04:25The police helicopter is called in.
04:34And two other police cars join the motorway ahead of the speeding car.
04:43He's weaving in and out of the traffic again.
04:46The plan is now to isolate the Audi by slowing down the other traffic.
04:50By putting a rolling block on, what we're doing is creating congestion.
04:54By creating congestion, you're forcing the fleeing vehicle to take to the hard shoulder.
04:59We speed 130, hard shoulder.
05:03He will then break through the tailback.
05:06What you've then created is potentially a mile or two miles of sterile, clear motorway.
05:11You're then able to use your tactics to box the vehicle
05:14and bring that vehicle to a slow and controlled stop.
05:20After driving for 42 miles at speeds of up to 150 miles an hour,
05:25the car finally gives up the chase.
05:29Stop, stop, stop, stop.
05:37It's now all hands on deck to get the driver detained.
05:41I've got no idea who this guy is.
05:43I don't know whether he's got a firearm, whether he's got a knife, whether he's got an explosive device.
05:47I have no idea who this guy is.
05:49All I know is he's coming out of that car.
05:52Headpass 3-1, they've got the vehicle stopped on the exit slip.
05:57Exit slip, junction 45.
06:00Exit slip, junction 45 and driver detained.
06:10In the boot, Julian finds cannabis worth £5,000 in a bin liner.
06:15In that was multiple freezer bags all done up into individual deals.
06:19So his job was to run the drugs from a point to another point to another courier
06:24who would then pick them up and pass them out to street dealers.
06:27So he was a part of a chain of possession with intent to supply.
06:33But perhaps even more shocking is what he finds in the back seat.
06:37There's one male driver, a female with a small child in the back.
06:43Let's get some details.
06:50I'm looking at something I'd never expected to see, which is a three-year-old kid
06:54sat on the seat on a mother's knee in tears and screaming
06:59and a mother who just was completely nonplussed.
07:06Coming up, a team of suspects in a stolen car give the pursuing cops the slip.
07:115-7 has gone off road.
07:13Is he still in the vehicle?
07:15Yeah, yeah, they're still going.
07:17But when a suspected car thief makes a run for it...
07:20How far down is it? Six foot.
07:22..the cops fear for his life.
07:24He jumped that wall. I thought he were a goner.
07:33Over the last 12 months,
07:35Yorkshire has seen some of the highest rates of vehicle crime in Britain,
07:39with more than 2,000 vehicles stolen.
07:42For the traffic cops of North and West Yorkshire,
07:45chasing car thieves and burglars
07:47has become an almost hourly occurrence throughout the region.
07:50It's almost like the Fast and the Furious now.
07:52There's people stealing these exceedingly high-powered,
07:55high-performance cars, and it's just... I suppose it's open season.
08:01It's 1am in Bradford, West Yorkshire.
08:05Traffic cop Chris Spencer is responding to a report
08:08of a police pursuit 12 miles away.
08:16At this time of night, cars failing to stop for the cops
08:19often means the vehicle is stolen.
08:21And with three men in the Ford Focus,
08:23it's likely the pursuing officers have rumbled a team of suspected thieves
08:27as they go to work.
08:29We heard over my radio that a vehicle was found stopped
08:32in front of my colleagues, so we set off.
08:34And lo and behold, as we were driving in one direction,
08:37he was actually driving towards us.
08:396-1, show me your technique.
08:416-0, 6-0, 9-1.
08:43It's going out from the vehicle.
08:45Still heading towards Bradford.
08:50There are now four police cars closing in on the suspects.
08:54West, west, west.
08:59Still heading towards Bradford.
09:01He's overtaking vehicles.
09:06The stolen car is veering wildly from one side of the road to the other,
09:10endangering other vehicles.
09:17Trying to contain people like this on urban roads
09:20is not only dangerous, but extremely difficult.
09:30At speeds reaching 80 miles an hour,
09:33Chris and his colleagues try a risky pursuit tactic
09:36to force the Focus to stop.
09:41Crossing the traffic light.
09:43Outnumbered, the driver stops at nothing to avoid getting boxed in.
09:51A few minutes later, desperate to escape the cops,
09:54the Ford Focus hurtles off-road.
10:00Just continue. We're on a certain track.
10:055-7 has gone off-road.
10:07Is he still in the vehicle?
10:09Yeah, yeah, they're still going.
10:115-7, just confirm you're no longer behind the vehicle.
10:14Negative, nobody's behind it.
10:17If the car loses on the road, then they start to do silly things
10:20and he's driven into a field that must have been four foot deep in shrubbery.
10:24At that point, my colleague that was following us
10:26decided that that's the point where he is not willing to go.
10:29Where's the car, I wonder?
10:35Where is the car?
10:36The three men have abandoned the Ford Focus and are off and running.
10:39Where's the car they got chasing?
10:41The field was enormous.
10:42There was no way that we would ever have found him in that field.
10:44Oh, look at that cheeky bastard.
10:47With no sign of the three suspects,
10:49Chris and his colleagues only hope now
10:51is to wait for the police helicopter to arrive.
10:57MPAD 3-1, coming on scene now.
11:00MPAD 3-1, take them off the other side, can you see the car?
11:04MPAD 3-1, you're on scene, you've got your torch looking now.
11:08The helicopter's thermal imaging cameras
11:10can detect suspects through their body heat
11:12and they're now scouring the surrounding area.
11:16But have they arrived in time to locate the three runaways?
11:2640 miles away in York,
11:28North Yorkshire police controllers have received a call
11:31from the owner of a Land Rover Defender.
11:33Police emergency.
11:34I just wanted to report my car's been stolen.
11:36Literally just gone.
11:37It's just gone, has it? OK.
11:38And we're talking just within the last few minutes?
11:40I'd say certainly within the last 10 to 15 minutes, yeah.
11:46Car thieves often target specific vehicles
11:48that are easy to break down into parts and sell on.
11:51And a current favourite is the Land Rover Defender.
11:55We have groups that will go out and specifically target Land Rovers.
11:58Over the course of a week, they can take two, three or four Land Rovers.
12:01They sell for a lot of money now,
12:03especially with the Defender having ceased production.
12:05There's a big market in the spares,
12:07a lot of people that do them up and restore them,
12:09and as such, the spares market's big business.
12:13In the past two years,
12:15thefts of Land Rover Defenders have increased by 69%
12:18in the north-east of England.
12:21But looking for a stolen car across 3,200 square miles of North Yorkshire
12:26can be like searching for a needle in a haystack.
12:29Now, the car's got a sky tag fitted.
12:31Luckily on this occasion, the car contains a tracking device.
12:35Well, I'm hoping if we're quick enough, we'll pick up on the tracker.
12:38That'd be amazing. We've got some good resources in the area
12:40and we've already notified West Yorkshire Police.
12:43The control room puts a call-out to all officers in the vicinity.
12:51Officers James Duffy and Tim Wilson from North Yorkshire's Road Crime Team
12:55are close to where the Defender was stolen and pick up the call.
13:03The words you want to hear is there's a tracker on it
13:05cos then you get its exact location.
13:07It was like a big gift, really.
13:09Other side of Cross Hills, grab that.
13:11You're going to have to guide me.
13:13As James and Tim race to catch up with the Defender,
13:16its tracker pinpoints it seven miles away,
13:18travelling towards West Yorkshire.
13:20Yes, yes. Is it generally moving towards sort of Keighley area?
13:24Keighley area.
13:26Heading into unfamiliar territory at high speed,
13:29James' skill as a pursuit driver is tested to the maximum.
13:34It was a really difficult drive because at those speeds, 60-odd,
13:38and in the darkness, we're really having to push the envelope
13:41and in the back of your mind you're thinking,
13:43I don't want to miss out on this job.
13:45I want to get behind it, I want to get him locked up.
13:47Getting updates and pass him across.
13:49One mile ahead, a West Yorkshire unit has caught sight of the Defender
13:52and joined the chase.
14:04This is it, mate. It's at the bottom of here.
14:06Let's get running, legs on.
14:08Nine-four, we're going six.
14:10Seconds before James and Tim arrive,
14:13a suspect crashes and runs off into a nearby wood.
14:22With the police helicopter busy searching
14:24for the three runaway suspects in Bradford,
14:27finding a man in the middle of the woods with nothing but a torch
14:30and good old police instinct is going to be tough.
14:35And you get there and you think, the job's gone, it's petered out,
14:38we've got a car back, it's crashed, the victim won't be right up here
14:41and we've got no bodies from it.
14:43Cos if we bombed out road, he'd just starburst straight over the wall.
14:47Without a helicopter, you're struggling here.
14:5317 miles away, back in Bradford...
14:57Headpads are all coming on scene now.
14:59..a police helicopter is on hand to help the traffic cops
15:02search for the three runaway suspects
15:04who abandoned a Ford Focus in a field after a high-speed pursuit.
15:10Do you think it's in the car?
15:12The plates definitely don't match.
15:14There were three in it, but I didn't get a good enough look at them.
15:17The unit that got in front of them first might have done.
15:22Less than three minutes into their search,
15:25the helicopter's thermal imaging cameras
15:27have detected a heat source near some houses.
15:31I've got three going through gardens.
15:33There's three going through gardens now.
15:356-9, that'll be them. MPOS, can you direct me in front of the car?
15:403-1, they're going through the garden.
15:43Oh, right, so they're coming back towards us.
15:45Yeah, they're just climbing through trees in back gardens at the moment
15:49and over the fences.
15:51The three men may think they've given the police the slip,
15:54but their every move is being captured on camera.
15:58Ah, so they've literally run up here, they're going down there.
16:01We'll go back up here. I think that's the best way to go.
16:05The helicopter tracks the suspects to a back garden...
16:08They're in about the fourth garden from the end.
16:11..where they appear to be looking for somewhere to hide.
16:15But moments later, the men are on the move again.
16:18I've gone into the rear of...
16:22The suspects may now believe they're home free, but no such luck.
16:26Chris and the other officers rush to the house,
16:29along with the dog unit that's just arrived.
16:31X-ray Delta unit, two officers at the back of the property.
16:35A few minutes later...
16:38..the suspects are led outside in cuffs.
16:42And it turns out one of them is already known to Chris.
16:45Is he the guy that told that defender?
16:51Less than a fortnight before,
16:53the same individual was arrested for stealing a Land Rover Defender
16:56and crashing spectacularly, flipping it on its side.
17:01I know the car that was involved in that crash was so badly damaged,
17:05and yet they've managed to walk away without a mark on them.
17:08Whilst on bail for stealing this Land Rover,
17:11the man is once again under arrest on suspicion of stealing a car
17:14and going equipped to steal.
17:17People do try to do everything they can to outfox us,
17:20and that night, when they've been followed by the helicopter,
17:23I've gone into the house.
17:24All three had attempted to change their clothes.
17:26One of them was protesting how he'd just woken up.
17:29One of them had just had a shower.
17:31These people will do everything they can to make our job
17:34as difficult as possible, which I suppose is to be expected.
17:37It's inevitable.
17:40On the edge of West Yorkshire, in Hebden Bridge,
17:43James Duffy and Tim Wilson of North Yorkshire's road crime team
17:47are still searching for the man who they suspect stole a Land Rover Defender.
17:56After an hour-long chase,
17:58a suspect has crashed the vehicle into a wall and legged it into the woods.
18:10A West Yorkshire police unit arrived before James and Tim
18:14and saw the suspect making off into the woods.
18:23With the police helicopter busy trying to locate
18:26the three Ford Focus runaways in Bradford,
18:29James and Tim have no choice but to search for their suspect by torchlight.
18:40There's no way I'm going to find this person.
18:43There's a river there. I can't see Tim, who's five foot in front of me.
18:46It's just an absolute nightmare.
18:54It's now over an hour since the vehicle was stolen
18:57and the officers are starting to give up hope.
19:02Actually, I was considering returning to the top
19:04and trying to preserve the scene as best I could for the dog
19:07and to give the dog officer the best chance of finding it,
19:09when all of a sudden...
19:11Hands behind your back now! Hands behind your back!
19:14Other one behind your back now!
19:16Shut up. You're locked up, pal.
19:18Theft of motor vehicle.
19:20If you're under caution, don't have to say anything.
19:22My own defence, do not mention my questions.
19:24If you're caught, anything you do to me will be given evidence.
19:26How I found him in all that darkness, I've no idea,
19:28but lo and behold, pointed at the floor
19:30and there's someone, arms by his side, doing the plank,
19:32leading the undergrowth.
19:34Did he fail to stop for you as well? That's him.
19:36Right, you're locked up, dangerous driving and failed to stop.
19:39Hiya, Bob.
19:41The man is sweaty and appears to have been running
19:44and he fits the description of the suspect,
19:46but he insists he's innocent.
19:48Search for what?
19:50What are you disturbing my sleep for?
19:52What, your big sweaty sleep?
19:54Night terrors.
19:56What?
19:58Magic mushrooms? Yeah, yeah.
20:00I've done mushrooms, I'm asleep in the bushes in the middle of nowhere,
20:03100 yards from a Nick Landry room.
20:05I think there's a bobby in the land that'll go,
20:07oh, sorry, mate, yeah, back to it,
20:09we're just looking for someone that's legged it from a stolen.
20:12Realising the magic mushroom story isn't going to wash,
20:15the man then tries another tack.
20:17What's your problems? Right, I've told you, you're locked up.
20:20For what? Right then, mate.
20:22I'm not lying at all, I wasn't driving.
20:24You don't lie and say I was driving when I wasn't.
20:26The man is arrested under suspicion of stealing the Land Rover,
20:29driving without insurance and driving whilst disqualified.
20:33I was the only person in that car? Yeah.
20:35I jumped out the passenger.
20:37Yeah, because you couldn't get out of the driver's side.
20:39So where did the driver go then?
20:41I'm not arguing with you, mate.
20:43While the suspect continues to protest his innocence,
20:46Tim examines the Land Rover.
20:48Made a mess of the tyres.
20:52Got the ignition barrel and that's been pulled out.
20:55But fortunately we've got this one today, so...
20:59..result.
21:00Suspecting this isn't the first time the man has offended,
21:03the police will question him back at the station.
21:06Take him back to Arrogate now.
21:08He's a bit on edge, so it's going to be an interesting journey back.
21:14Coming up...
21:15James and Tim finally get their man in custody.
21:19Stand at the desk now.
21:21But he's got one last parting shot for the cops...
21:27..and a suspected drug dealer does a runner.
21:30A package was thrown from the driver's side.
21:46At Harrogate Police Station,
21:48James Duffy and Tim Wilson of North Yorkshire's road crime team
21:51have detained a man they suspect may have stolen a Land Rover Defender.
21:56What are you lying for?
21:58Why didn't you admit that you were somebody else driving and you didn't find him?
22:02What are you trying to put it all on me for?
22:04I'm not trying to put anything on you.
22:05The circumstances I know of, you'll get a chance in an interview
22:07to explain anything that you've got to explain.
22:09It turns out this isn't the first time he's been in trouble with the police.
22:13He'd recently done a custodial sentence following disqualified driving.
22:16He'd been involved in aggravated talks,
22:18taken without the onus of consent.
22:20He had a lot of history that was in line with the offence
22:23that he'd been arrested for.
22:25Can you get some bags to see his clothing?
22:27Some tape.
22:29Anybody that's been in a vehicle, if they're saying they're not,
22:32you know, we can potentially get fibres, DNA, etc, from the driver's seat
22:36to try and prove that they were in the driver's seat,
22:39and he's took offence to that.
22:41Are you taking my clothes as well? Yeah.
22:43I'm a passenger in the car, so why are you in a dickhead form?
22:46We'll be taking your clothes.
22:47Well, we can either do it by force or...
22:49No, don't want to fight.
22:51Why are you taking the... desk now?
22:53Stand at the desk now.
22:55Stand at the desk now.
22:57Calm yourself down. Just relax, calm yourself down.
23:00Straightaway we saw a bit of aggression from him.
23:03We saw that he wanted to fight,
23:05but it wasn't something we hadn't seen before.
23:07It was just another of this, he'll get aggressive, he'll calm back down.
23:11But appearances can be deceptive.
23:23What are you doing?
23:32Go and check Jim, he's just sliding.
23:34Go and check Jim.
23:36Can somebody cut it?
23:40I think it surprised me.
23:42It shocked me, because he chose his moment when James isn't looking,
23:46there's no warning signs,
23:48he's just picked a moment where he feels he can get a punch in
23:51and then almost run off afterwards, away from him.
23:55It's cheap shot, it's dirty.
23:57Guaranteed yourself a charge down there.
24:05You all right, mate?
24:07Yeah, mate, just blindsided me.
24:10Coward. Coward.
24:15Bit of blood.
24:17Yeah, I was annoyed that...
24:19Not annoyed at being assaulted, really,
24:21but annoyed in the way that he did it, because it's just not...
24:25It's not really cricket, is it?
24:27The prisoner has added assaulting a police officer
24:30to the growing list of charges against him.
24:32His fate now will be in the hands of the court.
24:35Was it worth it? Probably was,
24:37but it ain't going to take the shine off the job for me.
24:40Every day of the week I'd rather lock him up and take one in the face
24:43instead of having to let him get away with it.
24:45Yeah, if that's the price of justice, then so be it.
24:53When they aren't dealing with the repercussions of stolen cars,
24:57combating drug crime throughout North and West Yorkshire
25:00is a daily problem, especially in areas like Leeds and Bradford.
25:05Their position on the crossroads between Hull and Manchester
25:08mean millions of pounds worth of drugs
25:11pass through these cities every year.
25:13And where there are drugs, there is associated crime.
25:18You've got every spectrum that you could possibly wish for in Bradford.
25:22You've got the top side up onto the border with North York,
25:25which is lovely.
25:27You've got the tougher side in the city and surrounding the city.
25:32You can go from one part to another part to this part to that part
25:35and you can find four seasons in one day, really.
25:39West Yorkshire traffic cop Nick Priestley
25:41used to be a detective, but he exchanged his biro for a BMW
25:45when he realised he wanted a change of gear.
25:49The traffic guys were going out and handing me the paperwork
25:52and saying, there you go, over to you, and they were back out and about.
25:58Today, Nick is on patrol in Bradford
26:01and he's spotted a car up to no good.
26:05We've seen a Golf parked at the side of the road,
26:08a young lad leaning through the window,
26:11so it was clear to me that the Golf were dealing drugs.
26:17Just pull in there.
26:19Suspecting a drug deal is one thing.
26:21Catching the culprits is another.
26:24The Golf seems to be stopping,
26:27but then accelerates away.
26:30He's parked.
26:35HOMER 3-0, vehicle found to stop at Green Lane at Wyke
26:39to St Mary's Crescent.
26:44HOMER 3-0, give us further, please.
26:49Single crewed, TPAC trained.
26:52Requesting TPAC authority, please.
26:54Speed is 3-0.
26:59Yeah, it's 3-0. We're now at Towngate at Wyke,
27:02going towards Odsall Top, over.
27:05It's two Asian male occupants.
27:07Speed is...
27:09From start to finish, we are in a built-up area.
27:13It's tea time.
27:15People are going about their business, finishing work,
27:18going on for tea, doing school runs, kids' runs.
27:21You know, it is busy.
27:23HOMER 3-0, an authority for tactical chase pursuit has been granted.
27:27Stand by, stand by.
27:29We're back towards Odsall, Huddersfield Road.
27:32In short, we'll need 17 address on the subject vehicle, Dan, please.
27:35Yeah, he's suspected being involved in the supply of Delta Romeo
27:39down at Wyke.
27:41It's now Huddersfield Road, passing Delfield, nearside.
27:44The drug gangs know that if they put the public in danger,
27:47the more likely it is that the police will abort.
27:53Yeah, he's sort of going to go to...
27:55Into Marshfields, over, into Marshfields.
27:59Yeah, it's committed Marshfields, towards Manchester Road.
28:03Finally, desperate to escape the cops, the car veers wildly into an alley.
28:12It's back at Ransdale Road.
28:14I think we're going to abort now. Just stand by.
28:24Yeah, I've lost it on the back streets.
28:26It's gone down the Snickets, over.
28:28It'll come back out on Bolingbroke Street, over.
28:32He's gone down an alleyway, which I could have got down,
28:35but it would have damaged my car, and, you know, it's not justified that.
28:39I'm not going to write off a 40 grand car just for the sake of my pride.
28:43You know, I must catch you. That's a non-starter.
28:47The police in Yorkshire are used to dealing with uninsured drivers
28:51and criminals who steal to order for a fast buck.
28:55It's a crash, crash, crash.
28:57But it's not just cars that the criminals target.
29:02Shoplifting accounts for 11% of the crimes committed in North Yorkshire.
29:07It's mid-afternoon on the outskirts of York.
29:10Traffic cops James Duffy and Tim Wilson have received reports
29:13of a woman suspected of shoplifting who's then made off in an uninsured car.
29:37We're going to head up through York, up the A19, and hopefully come across it.
29:41Give it a stop and see what the crack is with it.
29:46The woman is believed to have taken goods from a boots store in North Allerton.
29:51You've got to be straight on, haven't you? It's not held there, is it?
29:5630 seconds later, the Ford Focus comes into view.
30:00You presuming that's it?
30:04Looks like it.
30:06948, we're behind this vehicle. It's 12.37.
30:1012.37.
30:12948, we're behind this vehicle. It's 12.37.
30:16948, we're behind this vehicle. It's 12.37 towards the Foxwood roundabout.
30:22We're behind it now. We'll give it a quick stop.
30:24But despite Tim flashing his lights at her and signalling to her to pull over,
30:29the driver seems in no hurry to do so.
30:31Does she know we're after her?
30:37Your suspicions are aroused when she takes so long to pull over.
30:40You know straight away something's not right with it and you just wonder why.
30:44So before we even got to the car, you know, you're thinking something's not right here.
30:49She's not pulling over at this time.
30:51I'm not sure whether she's just looking for somewhere to pull over,
30:53but she's going some distance.
30:55Eventually, the driver pulls over into a lay-by.
30:58Stand by. We've got a nearside indication. It's a stop-stop, Ascombe Lane.
31:07The car has shown up on the police database as uninsured and having no registered keeper.
31:13Is it your car?
31:14I've just bought it.
31:15You've just bought it. Is it insured?
31:17Not yet. It's not insured.
31:19No worries. Have you got a driving licence?
31:20Yes.
31:21You have? Brilliant. No bother.
31:22Have you got any ID on you?
31:25I'll just take that off you.
31:26Let go, let go, let go.
31:27Go, go.
31:28I'll just take that off you just because you've got the clippers in there, haven't you?
31:31When we've got somebody like that that's been seen in suspicious circumstances
31:35and then they have got a pair of wire cutters,
31:37which are regularly used to de-tag items in shops,
31:40not just within the vehicle but sat two-hand within her handbag,
31:44that tells me a lot, really.
31:46And that gives me all I need to then detain her for the search.
31:49Is there anything in here that you want to tell us about, like all that down there?
31:52I've just bought this car. I swear to God, I've just bought it.
31:55Right, OK. Jump out for me. We'll just take you over here.
31:58The car turns out to be full of items the officers suspect are stolen.
32:03As you can see, probably...
32:05We'll have a look, see if she's got a receipt for,
32:07but they're probably a fair few quid, £30, £40 apiece.
32:10I bought that car.
32:12From where?
32:13Out of the paper. It was advertised in the paper.
32:15Oh, right, where? Have you got it?
32:16It was £300. I had to meet a lad in there.
32:19What's the road called? Church Lane.
32:22Where's that?
32:23I've just brought all my satin off.
32:24Have you got a receipt for all the Colgate stuff and Mac stuff and all that in there?
32:28No.
32:29No?
32:30I'll tell you the truth, it was in the car.
32:31Right, listen.
32:32Where's the car?
32:33Instead of lying to each other...
32:34I'm not lying.
32:35No, listen to me, listen to me.
32:37I've told you that you've stopped in regards to shop theft, haven't I?
32:40And you've got clippers and a load of stuff you haven't got a receipt for.
32:43I'm not standing around and messing about here.
32:45It's a simple case of shop theft.
32:46If she thinks that we're going to believe that she's turned up,
32:49bought a car for £300, £400,
32:52and it just so happens to be full of all this gear...
32:55Look at that. Four bottles of Moe.
32:57Still with security tag on.
32:59Usually don't let you take security tags.
33:01Three boxes of them.
33:03Decent day out at shops.
33:05Unless it were part of a deal with the car.
33:07Apparently it was.
33:09The car and all its contents are going to be taken to the police station
33:13where the goods will be seized and catalogued.
33:15The gear and bag with the car, with the bottle of Moe in as well.
33:20The woman will also be charged with driving without insurance.
33:23Right.
33:24I told you, my brother's bought the car, I'm lost.
33:26I'm going to be home with it.
33:27It's not really out of order, no, you need insurance.
33:30I know that, but if you can't buy your car,
33:32you can't just stand there and ask the guy,
33:34do you see if it's all right, why are you waiting to get insurance?
33:37No, you can buy it off him and not drive it away
33:39until you've got insurance, like most people do.
33:42Most people don't do that.
33:44No, yeah, honestly, they do.
33:46Most people make sure they're insured,
33:48because otherwise if they're involved in a collision,
33:50people end up not being paid out.
33:52Yeah, true.
33:54I think your priorities are just a little different to everyone else's,
33:57but you're under arrest for driving without third-party insurance.
34:00She's now being taken to the police station,
34:02where the officers will run some checks on her ID.
34:14In Bradford, a suspected drug dealer
34:16has given traffic cop Nick Priestley the slip.
34:21I couldn't get round that corner, not without damaging this car.
34:24I'm passing word of the temperature, boss.
34:27It went right, so...
34:30As Nick searches for the car, news comes in.
34:36Officers have found it, but the occupants have escaped on foot.
34:4130, it's Agent Mills' driver wearing a...
34:44I think it was a grey top.
34:54While his colleagues search for the suspects,
34:56Nick's determined to find a package he thinks was thrown from the car,
35:00which he suspects contains drugs.
35:04When we first got behind the car, it turned left up into the estate
35:07and then it turned right,
35:09and it's at that point when a package was thrown from the driver's side.
35:17There should be a little plastic package under this light here.
35:20There it is.
35:22It's at the left-hand side of that light. Can you see it?
35:25Even while pursuing the suspects at speed,
35:27Nick managed to spot the exact moment
35:29when he believes the driver ditched the drugs.
35:33Right, looks like maybe ten wraps of heroin, maybe crack,
35:38or maybe a mixture of both.
35:40£10 wraps there, £100 in street dealing.
35:44There might be some more in the car.
35:46With the drugs found on the road,
35:48plus whatever the police find in the car,
35:50Nick hopes they'll have enough to charge the driver
35:53with possession with intent to supply.
35:55We have to convince the magistrates,
35:57and the judge, and the police,
36:00We have to convince the magistrates, and the jury,
36:02and the judges of that as well.
36:04But for me, I think it's what we've seen the car do
36:06and somebody leaning through the window,
36:08clearly dealing, possibly 20 wraps.
36:10Yeah, it's supply. It's not personal use.
36:15All that remains now is to find the drug dealers.
36:19Hopefully we can maybe get some fingerprints on the wrapping,
36:22DNA from the wrap, from the bag.
36:24So there's lines of enquiry. It's not over yet.
36:30Coming up...
36:32When James and Tim take their suspected shoplifter into custody,
36:36their next challenge is to find out who she really is.
36:39There's 19 other names that she goes by,
36:41and nine other dates of birth.
36:43And will the reckless Audi driver be dealt a heavy sentence
36:47when he has his day in court?
36:50He just had absolutely no thought that day
36:53apart from saving his own skin.
37:00When criminals are repeat offenders,
37:03it's usually only a matter of time before the police hunt them down.
37:13Just want to come to this blue door over here.
37:15At York Police Station, the woman arrested for shoplifting
37:18is about to be checked in,
37:20so James and Tim try to take some details from her.
37:23What's your date of birth?
37:25But there seems to be some confusion over her age.
37:31How old are you? How old are you?
37:341975.
37:36It doesn't make it 37, does it?
37:38I only got a C in maths, but I can work that one out.
37:41She's also given a false name,
37:43but a search for this name on the police database
37:46throws up somebody completely different.
37:48She was saying she was this woman here,
37:50which, as you can see, is a blonde.
37:52The woman may be a bit bigger build than she is.
37:55She's a lady with blonde hair.
37:57Is it true? I used to have blonde hair.
37:59Did you? Yeah. Were you a bit heavier set as well?
38:02Yeah, I was a bit fat. Were you? Yeah.
38:04Realising the police aren't buying her I-used-to-be-blonde story,
38:08the woman then comes up with another name.
38:10So, who are you really?
38:12It's Natalie Bishop. Natalie Bishop.
38:14Are you disqual? It's cos I don't have a licence.
38:18Are you giving us another name?
38:21Are you giving us another stiff name?
38:23Right, well, at this time, I'll further arrest you
38:25for driving otherwise in accordance with a licence
38:27and obstructing a police officer in the course of his duty.
38:31It turns out this isn't the first time she's given a false name.
38:35There's 19 other names that she goes by,
38:37and nine other dates of hers.
38:40When we've done checks on it, she's shown as wanted for two thefts
38:44and a failed to appear at Teesside Court,
38:46so that's probably why she's not given us correct details,
38:49as she's wanted.
38:51James and Tim's job now is to photograph and catalogue the goods
38:55so they can later be used as evidence if the case goes to court.
39:00New look, still got a tag on it.
39:02£35 court there.
39:04She obviously just goes out and this is what she does all day.
39:07They're £35 each, that's £30.
39:11£29.99.
39:14So, they're £41 a bottle.
39:16Depending on where you look, between £75 and £90 for that one.
39:20So, you're talking £250, £260 worth of champagne.
39:24I thought at first, when I saw it in the front passenger seat,
39:27I thought it was going to be a piddly couple of things.
39:30There's actually, well, I reckon probably up to a grand's worth
39:33of stuff here.
39:34Our job is to get all the evidence together and make sure
39:37that she's put before a court to hopefully be put where she belongs,
39:40which is away from anybody she can steal from.
39:44The sentences imposed for dealing illegal drugs
39:47can vary from several months to life in prison.
39:52In York, Julian Pearson is on his way to the Crown Court
39:56for the sentencing of Thomas Birkbeck,
39:59the drug dealer in the Audi involved in a high-speed chase on the A1.
40:07Speeds of up to 150mph were recorded.
40:13And the vehicle was in collision with a number of members of the public.
40:18So, it's a case of dangerous driving,
40:21fell to stop and in the boot of the car was some drugs.
40:29Julian is due to show the court the helicopter footage of the incident
40:33to prove just how serious it was.
40:36This was 42 miles of dangerous driving,
40:39where the subject, Mr Birkbeck, had driven extremely dangerously,
40:43putting other road users at risk, trying to evade capture at all costs.
40:51Most people go to work, they have some morals,
40:56but people like him look for the quickest, shortest route to riches,
41:01which invariably is drugs and crime.
41:03But the most shocking thing for Julian about this whole incident
41:07was the fact that there was a small child in the back of the car.
41:11I looked into the back and could see the child absolutely distraught.
41:16And it was just that sort of moment where you think,
41:20had he lost control of that car and crashed,
41:23then it was an absolute certainty that that child would have died.
41:27There's one male driver, a female with a small child in the back.
41:37I mean, I just got lots of contempt for the guy
41:40because he just had absolutely no thought that day
41:45apart from saving his own skin.
41:49He hopes the court will impose a custodial sentence on the driver.
41:55The streets of the UK will be better off without him for a while, I think.
42:00Two hours later, the judge has passed sentence.
42:04The judge did say this is one of the worst dangerous driving cases
42:07that she's seen.
42:09She sentenced him to a total of 32 months in prison.
42:12She disqualified him from driving for four years and eight months.
42:15North Yorkshire Police can be very proud.
42:17I'm personally proud because, at the end of the day,
42:20we've taken a drugs mule, a courier, off the streets.
42:23We've enabled that child to be placed in a hospital
42:27and enabled that child to be placed into care.
42:30It's given her, the three-year-old girl, the opportunity for potential
42:34to ensure that she doesn't continue living a life around drugs and criminality.
42:42All three suspects from the suspected stolen Ford Focus are currently on bail.
42:47But the man who was caught previously in a stolen Land Rover
42:51received an eight-month suspended sentence, 200 hours unpaid work
42:56and a 12-month driving ban for dangerous driving and aggravated vehicle taking.
43:06The identity of the driver of the Golf that failed to stop for Nick Priestley
43:10could not be proved, and the case was closed.
43:14Tests on the drugs thrown from the car confirmed they were
43:17ten street deals of crack cocaine and ten deals of heroin, valued at £200.
43:27The serial shoplifter received a 12-week prison sentence
43:30for previous shoplifting offences.
43:33As a result of the arrest shown in this programme,
43:36she was convicted of five thefts, going equipped to steal,
43:39no insurance, no licence, failing to stop and obstructing police.
43:45She received a four-week tagging order and a curfew and a six-month driving ban.
43:51And the suspect arrested by James and Tim for the theft of a Land Rover Defender
43:55pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer.
43:59He's currently on bail, awaiting trial for attempted burglary,
44:02robbery, disqualified driving and two further assaults on police officers.
44:14And for more from Yorkshire's traffic cops, head over to cbs.co.uk.
44:20There's a spike now as criminals pull that classic fast one, the cloned number plate.
44:26Here on Channel 5 tomorrow night, the new series of The Nightmare Neighbour Next Door
44:29continues with noise pushing communities to the brink.
44:34Stick around for a Celebrity Big Brother shocker in just a moment.
