00:00It's just another day on Britain's roads.
00:07Broken hip.
00:08Right.
00:09A pair of shorts and a pair of trainers.
00:12Really?
00:13Yeah, no leathers.
00:14So that's why your leathers save you.
00:15Makes all the difference.
00:16There's a couple of buckles on this front wheel and on the back wheel there.
00:21Whether it's been hit by the vehicle it's been collision with or whether it's collided
00:27with the kerb, I don't know.
00:29Luckily, no one was killed in this crash.
00:38With deaths and serious injuries caused by accidents on our roads on the increase,
00:42it's no wonder that around a quarter of all UK vehicles now have dashcams fitted.
00:49It's just crashed, it's crashed upside down.
00:56And the great British public are capturing outrageous driving on camera.
01:05Across the country, motorway cops are relying more and more on the evidence of dashcams
01:09uploaded to them.
01:11In this series, we follow them as they crack down on Britain's bad drivers.
01:41Tonight, they hunt down a driver who's on the run from the police.
01:53Give a boy racer his last chance.
01:55I need to have a chat with you about your driving, mate.
01:59And tackle a devastating crash that's brought the M6 to a complete standstill.
02:04Get off the carriageway! Get off! Now!
02:11Hi, it's Anton, you alright? What's the closure for?
02:24Inspector Anton Sullivan has seen a worrying rise in the number of fatalities on Cheshire's roads.
02:30This thing is dead important if we are at the seams of any major incidents.
02:37With 20 years in the force, and being a former detective, Anton's ready to take on any case.
02:44My hat, my glasses. You wouldn't think all of that weighs a ton.
02:49It doesn't get any easier.
02:52The M6 motorway that runs through Cheshire is the deadliest motorway in Britain.
02:57On average, more than a dozen lives are lost on it every year.
03:03Well, you know, motorways are brilliant when they're working.
03:06It just becomes a nightmare when they're not.
03:09Even the inspector gets stuck in traffic on the motorway.
03:12Well, unless I've got a reason to blue light my way through, which I don't at this current state,
03:18then I'll have to sit like everybody else and just take the pain.
03:24It's been an absolute massive smash behind us, a couple of wagons and that.
03:28Do we need an ambulance, do we think, for this?
03:30I'd say just get everybody there.
03:34It's Thursday lunchtime, and Anton is six and a half miles away from the collision.
03:43Jesus.
03:44He's on a section of the motorway with no hard shoulder,
03:47and is fighting his way through the traffic,
03:50while other officers are first on the scene.
04:12We've got what looks like a serious collision involving a number of HGVs.
04:21Anton is clear of the traffic,
04:23but he knows that as he approaches the scene, that won't last.
04:29We're coming up on the backlog of traffic now.
04:33But on this stretch of motorway, Anton has a way of getting through.
04:40It's what we call hard shoulder running, but it's really, really tricky.
04:45You've got debris waiting for people to jump into the hard shoulder for any reason.
04:50We need to drive slower, but at least we can get to the scene,
04:52as long as people don't clutter up the hard shoulder.
04:57When blockages do occur, and emergency services can't get through,
05:01people's lives are at risk.
05:05Here, in West Yorkshire,
05:07Dashcam captures drivers stretching their legs on the hard shoulder,
05:11and blocking the way of the police,
05:13desperately trying to get to a distressed woman on a bridge up ahead.
05:17A police negotiator has no option but to abandon his car
05:21and dash to save the woman's life.
05:24Luckily, he managed to get there just in time.
05:31Near Birmingham, on the M6,
05:33West Midlands Police spot a motorist.
05:36Really?
05:37Illegally using the hard shoulder.
05:40It seems to be stopping.
05:43Or maybe not.
05:50Speed of 9-0 in a posted 3-0 limit.
05:57With speeds now approaching 100 miles per hour,
06:00this driver is putting lives at serious risk.
06:03The high-powered BMW is a match for the police car,
06:06on and off-road.
06:08Stand by. I've got one out on foot. It is off-road.
06:11It's one out and running.
06:13The driver's still in the vehicle. We're onto grassland.
06:16And the vehicle is now returning to the road.
06:19Stand by for road name.
06:21OK, speed has significantly reduced now.
06:24It's, er...
06:26The speed has reduced significantly.
06:30The driver finally realises the game is up
06:33and magnanimously indicates before pulling over.
06:40Incredibly, the police found half a million pounds worth of cocaine
06:44in a bag flung into the bushes by the passenger.
07:00Back on the M6, Inspector Anton Sullivan is on his way
07:04to a serious traffic collision involving multiple HGVs.
07:11Stop!
07:12He arrives on the opposite carriageway and stops the traffic.
07:18The M6 is now closed in both directions.
07:23Hotel Sierra Zero One. Go ahead.
07:25I'm declaring a major incident standby on this.
07:29Two lorry drivers have escaped with minor injuries,
07:32but a third hasn't been so fortunate.
07:36The fire service coordinate the rescue
07:39while Anton tackles the gridlocked traffic.
07:42I need somebody to get to 19,
07:44so that we can hold the northbound closure at the moment.
07:47Uniform 54, I'm going to put the slip road closure
07:50on junction 19 northbound.
07:54PC Amy Hollis is 12 miles away.
07:57In Stockton Heath.
07:58That's a terrible place to stop.
08:03Stand by, we're just trying to get the helicopter landed.
08:10Hotel Sierra. Hotel Sierra.
08:14Yeah, our ambulance has landed on the southbound carriageway, we see.
08:21Amy's reached junction 19.
08:23How's it looking?
08:26A mess.
08:28Road's closed.
08:31You're better off than the people stuck down there.
08:37On Britain's roads,
08:39dashcams are now capturing our worst driving habits.
08:46Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Oh, my God!
08:50Oh, my God! Oh, my God!
08:54From reckless driving to impatient drivers.
09:01We are completely oblivious to other vehicles on the road.
09:08And even driving straight into other cars.
09:12LHF has 21.
09:14We're just going to crack on with the southbound.
09:18In Cheshire, the M6 has been closed for over an hour,
09:22following a crash involving three lorries.
09:25There is quite a lot of hazard at scene because of the load,
09:28the instability, so that's going to take some time.
09:33Inspector Anton Sullivan is coordinating the operation.
09:38Inspector Anton Sullivan is coordinating the police response.
09:42I'm going to anticipate the northbound's going to be closed
09:45certainly for the next four to five hours, if not longer.
09:48So I'll get a diversion route put in place for all the traffic behind.
09:52All right, sweetheart, I'm going to move the cones for you.
09:55Just be super careful after stopping traffic.
09:58At junction 19...
09:59Yep, come on, keep going.
10:01..PC Amy Hollis is moving cars from the blocked slip road.
10:04Other way!
10:08Do you want to jump out? Jump out, I'll reverse it.
10:15Stop back in the car, join on the M56.
10:17Thank you. OK. Cheers.
10:20Painful, that, wasn't it?
10:25Anton wants to reopen the opposite carriageway,
10:28but driving ahead spots a problem.
10:32Get off the carriageway!
10:34Traffic's coming, get off!
10:36Get back over there now!
10:41Go tell Sierra Zero-One.
10:43Go ahead.
10:44Everybody's decided to treat the northbound like a park
10:48and a walking place for the dogs.
10:50We need somebody to run through just ahead of the traffic
10:53and clear all the pedestrians off of it received.
10:57People don't consider the consequences.
10:59People don't consider the consequences of their actions.
11:02They can hinder the emergency services
11:04and that will often increase the delays, ultimately.
11:09You don't need any more tragedy on the road
11:11and it's a simple thing, like, stay with your vehicle.
11:14If you have to get out your vehicle, next to your vehicle,
11:17but don't go taking your dog for a walk across the carriageway
11:20because you don't know what's coming.
11:23This is the police helicopter. Please step back into your vehicle.
11:28Right. The northbound is now moving under escort received.
11:33After nearly two hours, traffic on the opposite carriageway
11:37is allowed to pass the incident.
11:42Uniform 5-4, the northbound slip road at Junction 19 is now reopened.
11:47For Amy, her roadblock has now ended,
11:50but the chaos continues.
11:53What are you doing?
11:55Right, you can't reverse up the slip road.
11:57You're going to get a ticket for the post for that.
11:59You need to continue on the motorway northbound.
12:01OK.
12:03Seeing a reverse up the slip road.
12:06Which, obviously, you can't do.
12:09Because most people, when they get onto a slip road,
12:11will start to accelerate.
12:12So someone's reversing and someone hits her at 50, 60 miles an hour.
12:17You've just got another crash on your hands.
12:22Finally, the fire crews reach the trapped driver,
12:25and the news isn't good.
12:29Yeah, I've got a message.
12:31A heli-med doctor has declared life extinct, received.
12:39Any police officer coming into this profession
12:41will have to deal with fatalities.
12:47It's not something they can train you for.
12:50You have to maintain a professional detachment
12:53to allow you to do the job.
12:59We go to some of the most horrendous crashes,
13:04but, you know, people don't see that.
13:06They'll just be stuck in a traffic jam and moaning on Twitter,
13:10like, oh, I've been stuck for five hours.
13:13The team now turn to recovering the three lorries
13:16and the 30 tonnes of debris,
13:18and they can also now release the vehicles
13:21that have been stuck for nearly five hours.
13:24What tends to happen, all the public who are driving past
13:27are actually looking at what's happening here.
13:30I know people feel they can't help it,
13:33but they're not watching what they're doing in front,
13:35and if they were travelling at speed,
13:37we would then end up with further collisions.
13:39Like that lorry there,
13:41you've got people who are driving vehicles, filming.
13:45I don't understand it. It's absolutely grotesque.
13:49A privacy screen is erected,
13:51and officers take the details of passing motorists on their phones.
13:57We're getting the summons in the post, mate.
14:10Hello to all morning patrols.
14:12Thanks very much for your assistance and your hard work.
14:15I can just second that. Yeah, thanks to everybody.
14:18We couldn't have done much more.
14:25After six hours at the scene, Anton leaves.
14:33Through the night, the southbound carriageway is cleared and resurfaced.
14:40At 6.30am, the motorway is back up and running.
14:47Once our work is concluded, the public will carry on
14:50completely unaware of the tragedy that unfolded.
14:55But for me and my officers, we will drive past roads
14:58where we will picture incidents we've dealt with
15:01and we will be able to see what's going on.
15:04And that's what drives us to do everything we can
15:06to prevent them happening in the first place.
15:18At weekends, calls to the police in Cheshire increase dramatically.
15:23And, as can be expected, many of them are drink-related.
15:28To make matters worse...
15:34...tonight is the first weekend since lockdown
15:36that people have been allowed back inside bars to eat and drink.
15:47The latest government figures show that the number of people
15:50in bars and restaurants has increased dramatically.
15:54This vehicle is downshift control.
15:56The latest government figures show that deaths from drink-driving
15:59on Britain's roads are at their highest level for over a decade.
16:03More and more over-the-limit drivers are putting other road users
16:07and pedestrians' lives in serious danger.
16:10Our proposal is that we do use tactical contact
16:13when this vehicle is stopped, if need be.
16:15You can't keep control at all.
16:18Stand by. Six-five, go for it.
16:24This drunk woman in Manchester is totally out of control.
16:28Shocking footage from inside a shop shows the moment
16:31she smashes through the front window
16:33and horrifyingly sweeps up a six-year-old boy.
16:41Calmly putting it into reverse gear, the drunk tries to escape
16:45but only succeeds in bringing more of the shop down on top of her car.
16:50Amazingly, the young lad escapes unheard.
16:57In Newcastle, police spotted this mini Cooper
17:00that had earlier been reported stolen.
17:03The thief was nearly twice the alcohol limit.
17:08At one point, driving only on three wheels...
17:14..he was later jailed for three years.
17:20In Birmingham, this drunken Audi driver speeds through streets
17:24and parkland as he tries to evade police.
17:37He was eventually sentenced to 12 months in jail
17:40and banned for two years.
17:43In the control room at Police HQ...
17:48..a report is coming in of a car being driven erratically.
17:57It's from a concerned member of the public
17:59who's following right behind it.
18:12Not that long ago, Amy used to be a coal taker
18:15in Cheshire's control room herself,
18:17but she swapped that role for a faster-paced one
18:20and is now an elite motorway cop.
18:30Trained to drive at speeds of 150 miles per hour.
18:43The adrenaline's kind of pumping.
18:48Do you see what I mean?
18:55We don't do 150 all the time.
18:58If we're making to a grade one emergency call which has come in
19:02and I'm driving on normal roads,
19:04I wouldn't even touch 100 miles an hour.
19:06It's adapting your driving to the time of day, to the weather,
19:10to the circumstances, to the road.
19:12That's part and parcel of being an advanced driver.
19:36So it sounds like he's hit quite a few parked cars.
19:39Which obviously isn't the driving of a careful, competent person
19:43that you'd imagine to be in full control.
19:45So it's either going to be drink or drug driving
19:49or trying to get away from something, maybe,
19:53or medical episodes. You can't really rule that out.
19:57Roger, if you just carry on recording the progress,
20:00we are just plotting up.
20:04Amy and her colleagues are closing in.
20:07So I think it's been spotted coming through here.
20:13Amy's conscious that the suspect driver may spot her
20:17and try and make a potentially dangerous run for it.
20:21So, what we're doing now is, we think he's coming this way.
20:25So because we're in a marked car, we're going to get out of the way.
20:30I was right behind it, so I was like, oh, better move!
20:34The team have decided that the only way to ensure
20:37the dangerous driver can escape is to try and stop him.
20:43Have you got his licence plate number?
20:45No, it's not on.
20:55I've a couple of minutes to spare.
20:57I'm going to sort out the symptoms and run for it.
21:00The team have decided that the only way to ensure the dangerous driver doesn't escape
21:05and cause more havoc is to sting his tyres.
21:10So what they're going to do now is pre-emptive tactics on it.
21:12So they're going to sting it and then box it to prevent him from going anywhere.
21:22Over the years, many pursuits have been successfully stopped by a strategically placed stinger.
21:28Here, another biker is dangerously riding at speeds of 100 miles an hour in 30 limits.
21:44Using a stinger on a bike is a last resort, but the police know they have to stop him
21:49before someone's killed.
21:57The rider later pleaded guilty to a number of offences, including dangerous driving and
22:03possession of cannabis.
22:05He was jailed for eight months.
22:13Back on the outskirts of Chester...
22:15I just put my finger and say, I'm doing a pass.
22:20Stop!
22:21Stop!
22:22Where do you think you're going?
22:23These colleagues are preparing the stinger, a hollow bed of nails that will let the drunk
22:30driver's tyres down slowly and safely.
22:36Their body-worn cameras show it in action.
22:54Amy's colleagues are first to the driver.
23:01The man in a high-biz work jacket is clearly the worst for wear, but luckily he's not aggressive.
23:15In 2019, 280 people were killed on the UK's roads due to collisions with drunk drivers,
23:22the highest number in a decade.
23:29I think it's totally reckless.
23:31I think it's selfish for someone to take the risk of being intoxicated.
23:38I think it's disgusting.
23:39Right, you jump in, Nick.
23:40Have a seat there.
23:41It's an emergency.
23:42Jump in.
23:43Why are you being so mean to me?
23:44You all right, mate?
23:45I'm ex-forces.
23:46Why are you being so mean to me?
23:47Sorry?
23:48Just because you're ex-forces doesn't mean that you can drink drive, mate.
23:49Right.
23:50I'm a drunk driver.
23:51OK.
23:58It's going to take some of Amy's special forces to keep the man calm.
24:03I'm special forces.
24:04Right, at this time, you're detained, OK?
24:05You're putting my family at risk.
24:06You're putting my family at risk.
24:07I'm ex-forces.
24:08Right, listen, I'm special forces.
24:09OK, calm down.
24:10Get that camera out of the place now.
24:11Do you consent to provide me a specimen of breath analysis?
24:12OK.
24:13Is there any reason why not?
24:14Because I've got COVID.
24:15Having COVID will not result in you not being able to drink?
24:16No.
24:17OK.
24:18I'm ex-forces.
24:19I'm ex-forces.
24:20I'm ex-forces.
24:21I'm ex-forces.
24:22I'm ex-forces.
24:23I'm ex-forces.
24:24I'm ex-forces.
24:26Right, at this time, you're under arrest for failing to provide a specimen of breath
24:27at the roadside, all right?
24:28I'm going to give you one final opportunity to blow at the roadside.
24:29Are you willing to provide me a specimen of breath?
24:30I'll do it.
24:31You're over the limit, OK.
24:32Which case, you are under arrest, OK.
24:33Someone says, I'm not going to do it.
24:40I always say, just bearing in mind that the courts will take less favourably if you fail
24:48to provide and they'll still say no, and it's like, right, well, I've given you
24:52that disclaimer.
24:53And it's like, right, well, I've given you that disclaimer.
24:55You know exactly what's gonna happen.
24:57And you're still failing to provide.
24:59One of my colleagues is gonna take you into custody
25:01where we're gonna do the evidential
25:03breath test procedure there.
25:05As well as the offense of failing
25:06to provide a specimen of breath,
25:08the man's also going to be locked up
25:10for failing to stop at the scene of an accident
25:12after hitting the parked cars in Chester.
25:16Rights read and charges dealt.
25:18Amy's heading for the custody suite
25:20to hand over the arrested driver.
25:23In custody, the man did give a sample of his breath
25:31and it confirmed that he was over the drink drive limit.
25:49The streets around the country
25:50may have been largely deserted during the pandemic,
25:54but they provided the perfect breeding ground
25:57for another kind of outbreak.
26:02What is this, Passing Ferris?
26:04A wave of dangerous boy racers
26:08who like nothing better than using their mobiles
26:10and dash cameras to show off their exploits.
26:21It's just come over the radio there
26:23that there's having a meet of the boy racers
26:26up in Warrington.
26:28Mike Clark is a stickler for law and order
26:31and doesn't stand for any petrol heads on his patch.
26:37See the big scars on the tree.
26:39It's increased over the years.
26:41In my day, if you passed your car test,
26:43then you bought an old car
26:45and you learnt your skills,
26:46then you bought a new car,
26:47then you bought a new car,
26:48then you bought a new car,
26:49then you bought an old car
26:50and you learnt your skills in your old car.
26:52I was the one that come off the roundabout
26:54far too quickly.
26:56Buried his car into the tree.
26:59Trees don't move, do they?
27:00You know, if you hit them at speed.
27:04I nearly got wiped out one night.
27:06He come round the corner on two wheels,
27:08going far too fast, nearly lost it.
27:11It's not a PS4 game.
27:12You end up hitting someone who crosses the roads,
27:15then you've got to live with that.
27:16And pedestrians are one of the most vulnerable groups
27:19of road users,
27:21accounting for 27% of all fatalities on Britain's roads.
27:30Yeah, but what we're going to do,
27:32we're just going to back off
27:35and knock the lights off for a bit.
27:38Dubois racers may be dangerous,
27:40but they're not stupid
27:42and always have an eye out for the cops.
27:44Mike is hoping to catch them unawares
27:47and his unmarked and unlit BMW.
27:49Stay this now.
27:58Mike's quickly spotted one of the area's notorious
28:02noise-polluting boy racers.
28:12So he's already down there.
28:17It's all fun and games on the Fast and Furious films
28:20and all that kind of stuff,
28:21and I think that's what they try and emulate,
28:23that they race drivers, whether or not, you know,
28:26and the kids, and there being a pain in the neck.
28:30He knows who we are, I know.
28:34They draw the unwanted attention,
28:37or thoughts, by the way that they're driving.
28:40If they want my attention, I'll give it to them.
28:42I'm quite happy to.
28:46OK.
28:47You all right, mate?
28:48Your car, is it?
28:49Yes.
28:50OK.
28:51Need to have a chat with you about your driving, mate.
28:56Mike doesn't realise it yet,
28:58but he's come across this lad before.
29:00He called me a year or two ago in my Fabia, do you remember?
29:04Right, and we had a chat then, mate, didn't we?
29:06Yeah, I shouldn't have said.
29:08Sorry.
29:09OK.
29:10And what did we have a chat about then?
29:12Same thing.
29:13Of drawing attention to yourself and causing problems in your car.
29:16Yeah.
29:17And that is still ringing in your ears now,
29:19isn't it, you drive like that?
29:20Yeah.
29:21Right, have you heard about the Section 59 warnings?
29:23I have, yeah.
29:24Right, OK.
29:25And you know why we issue them?
29:26Section 59 warnings were brought in specifically to help drivers
29:30with driving disorders.
29:32So, if you've got a problem with your car,
29:34you've got a problem with your car,
29:36you've got a problem with your car,
29:39they're specifically to deal with antisocial drivers
29:42and enable the police to put pressure on people to behave.
29:45If you get stopped again within the next 12 months,
29:48a vehicle gets seized off you
29:50and you go to court over the driving offences.
29:53The Section 59 notice is not exactly a dream ticket,
29:57but then the lad got that a few weeks ago,
30:00winning a car in an online raffle worth £36,000.
30:06You've won what?
30:08It was Monkey London, the guy who's quite big on YouTube.
30:12He raffled his BMW M3 off and I had the winning ticket.
30:16Got the M3, sold it and then bought a car
30:19and then I'm buying a house as well.
30:23Right, so, obviously, that's your copy.
30:25Yeah.
30:27Yeah.
30:32I was just being a bit of an idiot and then got pulled over,
30:36but I have been told before, so I know not to do it.
30:40The driver just needs to keep a low and quiet profile
30:44before his luck runs out.
30:58Cheshire's motorway cops don't only target bad drivers,
31:02but also serious criminals
31:04who use the road network in and out of the county
31:07to commit offences, often in stolen vehicles.
31:18Let's back up a little bit.
31:22Determined to make their turf a no-go area for criminals,
31:26elite crime fighters like Matt Turner are leading the fight.
31:34Today, as he sits patiently in a lay-by watching the cars go by...
31:38I feel quite sick looking like that as well, seasick.
31:41..he has the unenviable task
31:43of finding the proverbial needle in a haystack,
31:47a black BMW.
31:55The car, reported stolen last year in Birmingham,
31:58made off earlier from a police patrol nearby.
32:01I'm just picking the car up on my way out to it now.
32:05Now Matt is part of a team that's quickly been assembled
32:08to guard all likely routes back to Birmingham.
32:11It's only failed to stop once,
32:13so we've got to anticipate that it would fail to stop again,
32:16so we're trying to do something pre-emptive
32:18with it to avoid that fail to stop
32:20cos the last thing we want is a pursuit.
32:24He did get a bit anxious, yeah,
32:26cos it's the not knowing what's going to happen, really,
32:29and the adrenaline starts going a little bit, really.
32:32You're just trying to be on your toes
32:34to make sure that you're scanning every car that goes through.
32:41Matt's colleague behind him has spotted the car.
32:51It's now a matter of getting ahead of the BMW
32:54and blocking off as many of the exit routes as possible.
32:59SIREN
33:04We've got Stinger at the next junction towards the motorway
33:07and a marked car behind it,
33:09so we're in quite a good position, to be honest.
33:15The Stinger is a standard-issue bit of kit
33:18that every motorway patrol car carries,
33:21and Matt is an old hand at using it.
33:29With the stolen BMW possibly only seconds away,
33:33Matt wastes no time setting up.
33:39It's all about timing.
33:45Making sure only the stolen car is stuck
33:50and remaining hidden
33:52to avoid being a potential target for the car's driver.
33:59When that car's coming down the road towards you,
34:02it's nerve-wracking, I mean, the heart's racing.
34:05You've got to get it right, really, and you only get one go at it.
34:09The pressure's on you, though.
34:18Oh, bleep!
34:20Dashcam footage is now accepted
34:22by a growing number of insurance companies
34:25as evidence in accident claims.
34:27It enables them to come to a conclusive decision
34:30as to who is liable...
34:32What are you doing, bleep?!
34:34..when two parties are both blaming each other.
34:37Back in Cheshire...
34:41..the motorway cops are lying in wait,
34:43stingers in hand for a stolen BMW
34:46that they believe is heading back to Birmingham.
34:51It's all about timing,
34:53and Matt is an old hand at using it.
34:58It's all about timing,
35:00and Matt is an old hand at using it.
35:03It's all about timing,
35:06and Matt is an old hand at using it.
35:13It's all about timing,
35:15and Matt is an old hand at using it.
35:28It is all about working as a team
35:30and covering all aspects.
35:35so we're going to have to sort of seize.
35:45He's still not reacting to the alarm.
35:46Gosh, I'm just going to get displaced.
35:48Or either a box or a Stinger on it.
35:52Just one of these behind.
35:53Behold, set Stinger up there,
35:55but in this case, he's doubled back.
36:02Up ahead, Matt's colleagues
36:04have successfully boxed in the stolen car.
36:12Get out! Get out now!
36:14Get out!
36:19It looks so aggressive.
36:21At the end of the day, you don't know who he is,
36:22why he's in the area or why he's in a stolen car.
36:25You got it?
36:26Got it.
36:27Got it, mate? Got it?
36:28It's all about controlling and containing that car
36:31and the individual.
36:32Stop him, stop the car and detain him securely.
36:348-1, vehicle stopped, no contact, drive to you.
36:39The driver's alone in the BMW
36:41and going to be arrested initially
36:43for failing to stop for police,
36:45while investigations are done
36:46into why he's driving a stolen car.
36:490-3-1-3-2-5.
36:52We got him off his knees, one male.
36:54No damage to any cars.
36:56No damage to his car.
36:58So, he's in a stolen car, recovered.
37:02A quick drug wipe test
37:04shows the driver is over the limit for cannabis.
37:07It suggests he might be carrying drugs somewhere in his car.
37:11Let's try and get under this seat, mate.
37:13But there's nothing obvious to be seen.
37:18Mark's just putting the drugs down for you now.
37:20Hopefully, he'll come up with something.
37:22But he has been arrested, suspicion of theft of this.
37:25And then we'll see where we go from there,
37:26get it recovered and then he'll go off to custody.
37:29There are no drugs in the car,
37:31but Matt's still happy with how things have turned out.
37:35Happy with it, let's just get it recovered.
37:37The lucky owner, who lost his car last year,
37:40might finally be reunited with it.
37:44Happy days, all sorted.
37:46He can go now, so can we.
37:48We'll get out of here.
37:52The man caught driving the suspected stolen BMW...
37:56..is still awaiting his day in court.
38:01See you later, mate.
38:09What the wife doesn't know won't hurt her, so, yeah.
38:13I'll just say I had a boxed salad.
38:16Can I pay you one, please?
38:17Yes, could I have a spicy, erm...
38:21..Mac spicy meal, please, a large one.
38:24Could I have a strawberry milkshake, please?
38:27Yes. Thank you.
38:29Looking forward to this now.
38:31Going to have to put the McFlurry somewhere coolio.
38:43The most common form of bad driving in the UK
38:46is, unsurprisingly, speeding.
38:48Accounting for a staggering 85% of all motoring convictions in 2020.
38:55And it can be expensive.
38:57With the minimum penalty, now a £100 fine
39:00and three points on your licence.
39:11Niaz has been in the force for 24 years.
39:15And has stopped thousands of speeders in his time.
39:23Today, he's on the lookout for anyone driving too fast
39:27on the westbound M56,
39:29Cheshire's northern motorway
39:31that connects Manchester to North Wales.
39:34And it doesn't take long.
39:43He's being naughty. Naughty with the 90.
39:51You get butterflies, you get the tingle in your stomach.
39:55You get the tingle in your stomach.
39:57You get the tingle in your stomach.
39:59You get the tingle in your stomach.
40:01You get butterflies, you get the tingle in your stomach
40:04because you don't know what's going to happen
40:06in relation to that pursuit.
40:1097% of speeders are caught by roadside cameras.
40:14But it's down to the cops to apprehend the most dangerous drivers
40:18that threaten everyone's safety on the roads.
40:23And he's coming off.
40:25And he's coming off.
40:28Where did people come off to?
40:35Now on a quieter stretch of road,
40:37Niaz indicates for the driver to pull over.
40:44Unfortunately for him, any time he thinks he's gained,
40:47he's now lost.
40:50You're still on guard as such
40:52because you don't know that person's going to react to you
40:55when you approach the driver's door.
40:58So why was he driving so fast?
41:03Thanks for pulling onto it in the first instance.
41:06Right, do you know why I've stopped you?
41:08Yeah.
41:09I've clocked you at 90 at times on the 56.
41:12OK, is there any reason for your speed?
41:14Apart from having a nice car.
41:16My wife is pregnant.
41:18Right.
41:19It's not related to that.
41:21My cat has died this afternoon and my wife is at school.
41:24OK. I mean, I can understand the reasons of getting on,
41:27but unfortunately, speed limits are there for a reason.
41:31A pregnant wife and a dead cat are no excuse for breaking the law.
41:36But Niaz and his colleagues have had plenty like it before.
41:41I need to go to the loo. I've had that happen before.
41:44But you've just driven past three sets of services.
41:46All right, do you know why I stopped you?
41:49I stopped a Rolls-Royce Wraith.
41:52His excuse was that he didn't realise that he was speeding,
41:55so he was braking for all the speed cameras,
41:57which suggests people may get caught speeding.
41:59What's the speed limit on that road?
42:01I guess it's 30.
42:0230, yeah.
42:03So I'm doing the speed limit and you overtook me.
42:05You plonker.
42:06The most comical one was, I wasn't driving.
42:08Or they've jumped out of the driver's seat
42:10and sat in the passenger seat and there's no-one else in the car.
42:13It's like, I wasn't driving.
42:14I don't think I've actually come across anybody speeding
42:17who had a legitimate reason for doing it.
42:19Back on the A49,
42:21the Audi driver's not getting away with it either.
42:25If you would have seen a marked police vehicle in lane two,
42:28you wouldn't have done what you would have done.
42:30You wouldn't, would you?
42:31I don't agree with that.
42:32Yeah.
42:33I hope your wife's all right and I'm sorry about your cat.
42:36All right, just drive safely.
42:49Chances are, he's going to have a road traffic collision.
42:54And then he's not getting home.
42:56So the wife who's pregnant,
42:58potentially life-changing injuries or fatality,
43:02husband trying to get home for her and obviously dead cat.
43:06So just throw your hands up, you can't speed him.
43:11Video recordings from the public
43:13have been used as evidence to support the case.
43:17Video recordings from the public
43:19have become crucial evidence for the police.
43:2425% of all dashcam incidents sent into them
43:28end in prosecutions.
43:31OK, we'll do the move up, move up, move up.
43:37Dashcam footage to me is brilliant.
43:40It puts you right there.
43:42There is no argument about what's happened
43:44when you've got a dashcam.
43:47If you have any dashcam clips
43:49you think could feature in the next series of Motorway Cops
43:52catching Britain's speeders,
43:54send them, along with your contact details,
43:57to contactus at purpleproductions.co.uk.
44:04And there's more Motorway Cops next Monday at 8.
44:07Later this week, a pair of motorway cops
44:09will be on the road again.
44:11And there's more Motorway Cops next Monday at 8.
44:14Later this week, a petrol-bombed car
44:16could blow at any moment,
44:18with lives on the line if it does.
44:20Police hour of duty, new Wednesday at 9.
44:23Next, the driver from an overturned car
44:25or the guy who fell from a roof.
44:27In Casualty 24-7, every second counts,
44:30but who gets treated first in Just a Mow?
