Crawley Town boss Scott Lindsey said his side played 'out of control football' as they lost 3-0 to Barnsley at the Broadfield Stadium.
Transcript
00:00Scott, thank you for joining us. It's obviously a difficult afternoon here at the Broadford Sten. Can I get your reflection on the game first?
00:07Yeah, there's a saying in football where you can win a game inside 20 minutes. On the flip side of that, you can also lose one and I felt that we did that.
00:20I felt that Barnsley came here with full respect of us. I think they realised we were a good team and they sat off us a little bit to start with.
00:31Then they slowly realised that we wasn't at it and we made mistake after mistake and then they smelt blood and then they stepped forward and then beat us up.
00:44Then obviously I had to make changes at half-time with three goals down. I had to make changes at half-time. We then play a different system that we've not done all season.
00:59But we had to do something different and we then play out of control football for the whole of the second half because we're chasing a three goal deficit.
01:08If it was a one goal deficit we'd continue playing our football probably but we're chasing it, we're doing things that we'd never do.
01:14It's just out of control football and I wouldn't mind if it was out of control football if we'd have had opportunities to score but we didn't.
01:22I think 56 minutes was the first chance on goal with a header from Toby and I think 92 minutes was the first shot on target.
01:33So for all the out of control football it made no difference and you put two up front, you want crosses coming to the box, you never cross the ball once.
01:42Really difficult afternoon but to protect the players, they're very inexperienced, many of them. They're very young and also it's a new team.
02:01So we have to be mindful of that, we can't expect to perform like we did against Wigan last week.
02:10I know we lost against Wigan but we performed so, so, so well and today we didn't and we've got to expect that every now and then.
02:17We've just got to make sure that we can't start a game like that.
02:23There were some players out there who were still in bed and it was unacceptable to turn up.
02:31You've got to have your eyes wide open, you've got to be engaged, you've got to be ready, you've got to be focused and we didn't have no focus today.
02:38Certain players didn't certainly.
02:40Is there anything you can put your finger on as to why?
02:54No, I can put my finger straight on it. We think we've arrived already and we haven't.
02:58We see ourselves play so, so well in the game so far and get some really good results.
03:03Then we go to Brighton on Tuesday night, we play so, so well and the way we played against a Premier League team is something to be proud of.
03:17Then all of a sudden we think we've arrived.
03:19You can't ever switch off and be like that in football.
03:22You've got to forget that, that's gone and forget what's gone in the past, the Cambridge game and the Blackpool game.
03:30Even though in the Wigan game we felt there were large parts that we were really pleased with, forget the result, we have to focus on the here and now and we didn't do that today.
03:38We have to take it game by game but is there big fixes that you think we need ahead of the next game?
03:44Obviously we know now we've got a bit of a break.
03:46Is there big fixes that need to take place or is that a very easy session with the lads on the training ground to put things right?
03:54No, we're a work in progress.
03:57This is what I'm saying, we can't expect us to be the finished article every week which I think people will.
04:06They want to see their team play well and win every week and I understand that because that's what football is and everyone's demanding of good performances every week and good results every week.
04:16The reality is that this team is new and whilst we've done really well we've also got to have a reality check a little bit and say we have done well.
04:27We're playing against opposition today who are very good, very physical, very aggressive in many ways but good in a good way.
04:40We've got an experienced manager who drove them on throughout the game but I felt that we give them the impetus to step forward and we didn't need to.
04:50I thought that we were so baggy.
04:52You look at the goals, the first goal is a set piece.
04:55We've been good on set pieces, certainly last year we were and we just don't defend the far post well enough in that moment.
05:04The second goal is our throw in.
05:05They cut through us like we're not even out there and then of course the penalty where we just throw a leg out, we don't defend the action properly.
05:15We're not aggressive enough to actually move our feet and defend it properly.
05:19We're just lazy with the moment and like I say we weren't engaged in the game for me.
05:23I just felt that we were miles off it and then what happens is when you can see two goals inside,
05:29I don't know what the second goal was but probably inside 25 minutes certainly,
05:33you then become weaker in your mind and the opposition become stronger in their mind and then it's game over.
05:41Then we're making changes at half-time, we had to and then it's out of control football.
05:47We spoke obviously before the game about how it would have been nice to take a win into this mini-break that we find ourselves with with the Burton game off next week.
05:55Are you still branching the prospect of having a week off or would you rather just have a game to put things right straight away?
06:01I'm not somebody who thinks about anything other than that's the reality.
06:04There's no point sitting here going I wish this and I wish that or we could have done without this or we could have done without that.
06:09The reality is that we aren't playing for two weeks.
06:12That gives me probably the opportunity to get some work done on the training ground obviously
06:18and certainly the players need some rest as well at some point during that two-week period.
06:24We'll be going into the Stockport game like a normal week and the team need to be coached.
06:30Scott, we saw the new signing Will Swan have 45 minutes, how did you assess his performance?
06:36I think it was difficult because it was an out-of-control game in that second half.
06:40I think he showed real good glimpses of what he's capable of.
06:45He's a good footballer, he's a goal scorer which is why we put him on the pitch
06:51but we never really give him anything to feed on really.
06:55It was out of control like I say, we were just chasing a three-goal deficit at that point so it was just no control.
07:04We saw Harry Forza have his first minute so that's a positive to take from it that he got through those 45 minutes.
07:10Yes, it was. We toyed with certain different things and Junior came in with a bit of a tight hamstring yesterday
07:26so we needed to be mindful of that and then of course we didn't want to throw Junior on in the game
07:36because we thought we've got two weeks off, there's no point risking him.
07:39If he's tight yesterday there's a chance he comes on and tries so hard and then stretches it and tears his hamstring
07:47and then we miss him for six weeks so we're mindful of that.
07:50So yes, we were limited with that with what we had to do on the bench
07:55but I felt that had he come on and had a charge about, it was pleasing to see Harry Forza on the pitch again.
08:07Looking at the transfer window close yesterday, we obviously saw Swan come in, Ibrahim come in
08:13and reports of another player coming in as well getting clearance.
08:16Are you happy with where the squad is at this point?
08:18Yes, of course. We've got some good players in the squad and we've got to make sure that we put a winning formula together within the squad.
08:29Excellent, thanks Scott.
08:31Andy, anything to add before Gary?
08:33Well yes, you did say Scott didn't you in your room preview that this was going to be a real aggressive test.
08:42You did all you could in the lead up with your players and it was in a way a League One examination from Barnsley.
08:57They're going to be a strong side this season.
09:00Yes, but we can't be that sloppy in the opening encounters of a game.
09:07We're more than capable of beating any team in this division if we do our job properly.
09:13Certain players didn't do their job properly in the early part of that game so it gives the opposition impetus to step forward.
09:20I felt literally in the first two or three minutes that they showed us a bit of respect in terms of they knew we'd play passes at the back
09:28and you kind of saw their positioning around the pitch and you thought they're wary of stepping forward because they know we're going to play.
09:36But then when you see one player go really sloppy in an action, if I was the opposition I'd be going,
09:42these are not actually on it today. Step forward lads and that's what the opposition did.
09:48They fed on that.
09:49Completely and that's what football is. Football sometimes can be won with the mind.
09:55If your mind's not sharp and you're not with it and you're feeling kind of lethargic in your mind and how your actions are,
10:04the opposition smell that and they step forward and all of a sudden they're all over you and you can't get out.
10:09And that's what happened today. For sure. That's definitely what happened.
10:12We lost that game in the first 20 minutes of this game today without a shadow of a doubt.
10:15And then it's out of control football in the second half. We're trying to do everything we can to get back in it.
10:21Impossible. We're 3-0 down. Well it's not impossible but it is the way we played.
