00:16since the beginning of time we have dreamt of what it feels like to fly

00:20to take to the skies and see the world from a whole new perspective

00:25as children we often have a fascination with the sky the stars and what it's like to

00:30stroll amongst the birds we spend hours staring into the sky watching clouds spreading shapes

00:38and wondering what it's really like up there this fascination has fueled us to push the boundaries

00:45and achieve the impossible taking flight tonight we invite you to join us and look to the skies

00:53in celebration the last 115 years of british aviation

02:35the year is 1908 and british army aeroplane number one has taken to the skies for the very

02:41first time following years of failed experimental flight we have conquered

02:47powered air flight for the very first time in great britain

06:10at the outbreak of the first world war powered flight was just over a decade old

06:15and its use for military purposes around five years old

06:19in 1914 the british air services had just 272 machines but by october 1918

08:38the year is 1939 and great britain is at war in the second world war

08:45which will fight on the beaches which will fight on the landing grounds which will fight in the

08:51fields and in the streets which will fight in the hills we shall never surrender hurricanes

08:59spitfires amongst others took to the sky to defend our country these very aircraft were the key to

09:06victories including the battle of britain and firmly established aviation as a critical component
