00:00Three new cases of MPOX have been brought to the country by the Department of Health,

00:04which is why the number of active cases has increased to eight.

00:07In terms of contact tracing, some of the patients had sexual encounters with people they knew through a dating app.

00:15Maki Polido was able to find out.

00:19The number of active cases of MPOX in the country has increased to eight since this August.

00:23In total, since July 2022, the number of confirmed cases of MPOX in the country has increased to 17.

00:28Like the previous cases, the new three confirmed cases are mild cases of MPOX or clade 2B.

00:34Case number 15 is a 29-year-old man from Metro Manila who had anonymous sexual encounters

00:41or had sexual encounters with people he did not know before his symptoms came out.

00:45Case number 16 is also a man from Metro Manila, a 34-year-old man who also had sexual encounters with his partner before his symptoms came out.

00:54Case number 17 is a 29-year-old man who has sexual contact with a possible symptom of MPOX.

01:02Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit conducted contact tracing on two active cases and one possible MPOX case.

01:10However, there are challenges in completing contact tracing because patients had sexual encounters with people they did not know through a dating app.

01:18They had multiple sexual encounters.

01:22It's hard to do contact tracing when it's like that.

01:26So there's no exchange of numbers and names.

01:30According to Dr. Ron Jean Solante, infectious disease expert,

01:34some may be embarrassed or afraid of the stigma, so they did not get tested.

01:38But they need to think that they may also be able to contact their loved ones at home

01:42due to prolonged and repeated skin contact or skin to skin.

01:47What if they have vulnerable population at home, elderly population, those who are pregnant,

01:55those who are children, eating together, sticking together every day without any protection.

02:04That can be a potential source of spread in the family.

02:08Two of the eight active cases have been discharged from San Lazaro Hospital.

02:13They will just complete the isolation at home.

02:16According to Dr. Solante, MPOX is the most contagious when the rashes come out.

02:20But MPOX patients are still contagious when there is a lesion, even if it's just scabbing or it's already drying.

02:27Three to four weeks before it completely disappears.

02:30If you still have the scab, it can still be infectious.

02:34This coming Sunday, the Metro Manila Council will hold a meeting to discuss the preparation for the possible increase of MPOX cases.

02:42One of the discussions will be on how to use the molecular laboratories of some LGUs that were used during the COVID pandemic.

02:49This is something that we will coordinate with the Department of Health so that we won't have to rely on a few hospitals.

02:58It would be better if local government units can test through our existing facilities.
