Deer Island
is located in the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, Canada, and is known for its rich maritime history. The island has been home to Indigenous peoples, notably the Passamaquoddy Nation, long before European settlement. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, British Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution began to settle on the island, turning it into a thriving fishing and shipbuilding hub. Lobstering and herring fishing became key industries that sustained the island’s economy. Deer Island is also famous for its proximity to Old Sow, the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere. Today, the island maintains a small, close-knit community, continuing to be a vital part of the Bay of Fundy’s maritime culture.
