00:03:24I'm the guy with the red cap
00:03:27I mean, I'm not as tall as Matt
00:03:32But anyway, I'm the fatty guy with the red cap
00:03:35You will see that
00:03:37And my name is Alex, Alexander
00:03:39Like Alexander the Great, some say
00:03:42But I'm neither Greek nor that
00:03:45And I don't have anything against Persians
00:03:47Our city tour
00:03:50And by the way, ladies and gentlemen
00:03:51I didn't ask you, do you understand my English?
00:03:54Yes
00:03:56It's quite intentional not to mention Arnold Schwarzenegger
00:04:02Even though the accent
00:04:04I make some mistakes
00:04:06Good, welcome to Vienna
00:04:09What was your last stop, if I may ask
00:04:12You were traveling
00:04:15And that brings me also to the first couple sentences
00:04:19Of history, ladies and gentlemen
00:04:22We will see many, many oversized, over-dimensioned
00:04:26And beautiful historic buildings along our way
00:04:32During our small city tour
00:04:35And you will
00:04:37Sometimes some of our guests ask
00:04:42What is it all about?
00:04:45How come that we have so many beautiful buildings
00:04:49And Austria is such a small country
00:04:52The whole country of the size of South Carolina
00:04:55Guatemala, Panama, so not that big
00:04:58And the city of Vienna, just 2 million inhabitants
00:05:02In comparison to other cities on this globe, rather small
00:05:06And the answer for this question is
00:05:09That we are, yes, a small country, a small city
00:05:13But before the First World War, we used to be an empire
00:05:16The second largest country in Europe
00:05:19The Austro-Hungarian Empire, ruled by the Habsburg dynasty
00:05:23I'm sure you've come across the name Habsburg so far
00:05:27Not just in history books, but maybe also along your trip
00:05:31Somewhere in Hungary, somewhere in Slovakia
00:05:34And the Habsburgs came here at the end of the 13th century
00:05:40And they ruled the country for more than 600 years
00:05:42And the city of Vienna used to be the capital of this empire
00:05:55For many, many centuries
00:05:57And that's the reason why we have so many prestigious buildings
00:06:01And so many beautiful churches
00:06:04And, you know, among the centuries, we had two golden periods
00:06:15First of all, in the 18th century, in Baroque times
00:06:19So that was a little bit before the US was founded
00:06:22When we managed to kick out the Ottoman Empire from Central Europe
00:06:28And when Austria really became big
00:06:31And that was the period when all the Baroque palaces and churches were built
00:06:38And the second golden period was the period of Emperor Francis Joseph
00:06:43If the Hungarians told you some stories about him
00:06:49He was the long-lasting emperor of the 19th century
00:06:53And in his time, Vienna really experienced a great, great time
00:06:58When it was the undisputed center of the empire
00:07:07With many scientists and artists working here
00:07:11So like Sigmund Freud and Gustav Klimt and Gustav Mahler
00:07:17And many, many more
00:07:19And, ladies and gentlemen, when I'm talking about important palaces
00:07:28Important buildings
00:07:30I would like to offer you the chance of seeing the first one of these beautiful palaces
00:07:36Just in a minute
00:07:38We can jump off the coach in a minute
00:07:42And get a view of one of the biggest sights this city has to offer
00:07:50The Belvedere Palace
00:07:51It was first of all a residence of a field marshal
00:07:57Not really of a Habsburg family member
00:08:04And it was the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy
00:08:10One of the most important soldiers we ever had in our history
00:08:14And since he was quite visibly gay
00:08:18He left no wife, no children
00:08:21So the whole palace and this heritage came to the Habsburgs
00:08:26And later Franz Ferdinand lived in this palace
00:08:31What we're about to see
00:08:33You know, the guy who got shot in 1940 in Sarajevo
00:08:38And today it's a splendid palace
00:08:43A remarkable example of Baroque architecture
00:08:48And also for those of you who are planning to come again
00:08:52It's a great gallery inside
00:08:55The Austrian Gallery with Gustav Klimt's masterpieces
00:09:00And now the idea is, ladies and gentlemen, to jump out here
00:09:03And get a quick view of the main façade
00:09:07So let's do a photo stop
00:09:19I'm trying to sing, but I can't do it
00:09:24Exactly
00:09:26Hail Mary, full of grace
00:09:30Hail Mary, full of grace
00:09:34Hail Mary, full of grace
00:09:38Hail Mary, full of grace
00:09:42Hail Mary, full of grace
00:09:47Hail Mary, full of grace
00:09:52Hail Mary, full of grace
00:10:07I told myself, I'll never be blind
00:10:12So here's a little bread
00:10:16From a small store
00:10:19Tea, milk, and bread
00:10:22That will bring us back to
00:10:25Go, go, go, go
00:10:27Go, a deer, a female deer
00:10:30Prey of a golden sun
00:10:33Me and me, I told myself
00:10:37I'll go no place and run
00:10:39So here's a little bread
00:10:43From a small store
00:10:46Tea, milk, and bread
00:10:49That will bring us back to
00:10:52Go, go, go, go
00:10:54Not like win, but ween
00:10:59Ween, like wine
00:11:02A little bit, it sounds similar, almost, for us
00:11:06We rate it almost the same
00:11:09In German language
00:11:11And that has also a reason
00:11:13Because we here in Vienna
00:11:16We have also our own wine production
00:11:21It's one of the single capitals in the world
00:11:24With a remarkable wine production
00:11:26And maybe you've heard ween
00:11:29In a different situation
00:11:32When ordering a hot dog sandwich
00:11:36In the US and many other countries
00:11:39The slim sausages in the hot dog sandwich
00:11:43How they are called
00:11:45They're usually called weeners
00:11:47It's the same word
00:11:49Because weener, what do you think could weener mean?
00:11:53It's the German word for Viennese
00:11:55And why?
00:11:57Because those slim sausages
00:11:59They were invented here in Vienna
00:12:01By a German butcher from Frankfurt, Germany
00:12:06And since he came
00:12:08It was a German thing
00:12:10And we still call these sausages Frankfurters
00:12:13And for the rest of the world
00:12:15Since the sausages were invented here in Vienna
00:12:20It was an Austrian, a Viennese thing
00:12:23And therefore they called the sausages weeners
00:12:26Viennese, or something like that
00:12:29And in America they call it sometimes weeners
00:12:34That's the same word, ween
00:12:37Vienna beer
00:12:39That can be stored in chilled cellars
00:12:42He called it, for this reason, storage
00:12:46Or in German, Lagerbier
00:12:49So if you're having slim sausages
00:12:52With a pint of Lagerbier
00:12:54That's typically Viennese
00:12:56So the wine
00:12:58You're about to taste the wine, right?
00:13:01The Viennese wine
00:13:03Because the restaurant tonight is specialized in wine
00:13:06Of course you can have your beer there as well
00:13:09But they have a certain focus on Viennese wine
00:13:14And it's a really good restaurant
00:13:17Because it's one of the oldest restaurants we have here in the city
00:13:22The cellars are more than 500 years old
00:13:25So it's a super scenic, super fine restaurant
00:13:32What else shall I tell you?
00:13:35Once again in this palace on the right hand side
00:13:38Franz Ferdinand
00:13:40The guy who got shot in Sarajevo
00:13:43Was living here
00:13:45And the Scottish band was named after Franz Ferdinand
00:13:50And if we're getting closer and closer to the city
00:13:57You have here on the right hand side
00:14:01A Soviet soldier on his monument
00:14:06You see him
00:14:08And that's one of the single Soviet war memorials
00:14:13Outside of the former Eastern Bloc
00:14:16Because the city was liberated in 1945 by the Soviet Union
00:14:21From the Nazi dictatorship
00:14:24And the Soviets themselves erected this monument
00:14:28And we are obliged to keep it for eternity
00:14:34If you look at the map
00:14:37You see that the city is surrounded by a small ring road
00:14:41Surrounding the inner center
00:14:42The first and most important of the 23 districts of the city
00:14:48And that marks more or less the frontiers of the medieval city
00:14:55So the older parts, the more historic parts
00:14:58Are inside of the ring roads
00:15:03What we're about to see in a couple of moments
00:15:06And the newer parts are on the outside
00:15:10And you're surrounded here by many fantastic buildings
00:15:15And the reason for that is of course quite simple
00:15:19Vienna used to be the capital of the monarchy
00:15:23And all those buildings here were designed
00:15:28To more or less reflect the power, the wealth
00:15:35The position, the renown, the reputation
00:15:43And not just palaces of normal people of the upper class
00:15:48But also some important buildings we can see here
00:15:51On the right hand side you have one example of music
00:15:55Because this white building is the second most important
00:15:59Concert hall, that's a concert house
00:16:03The home of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra
00:16:08This white building here on the right hand side
00:16:11And once we are turning you have another person
00:16:20An important field marshal on the back of his horse
00:16:24And that was Prince Schwarzenberg
00:16:28The winner of the Battle of the Nations in 1813
00:16:33Against Napoleon
00:16:35And ladies and gentlemen, now on the right hand side
00:16:39This red and white building, or red and yellow building
00:16:44Is the most important concert hall we have here
00:16:48The Musikverein, where the annual New Year's concert takes place
00:16:52And on the left hand side in the background
00:16:55A nice baroque church, St. Charles church
00:17:08And we are doing a little round trip here
00:17:11So you can see the sights a little bit better
00:17:15On the left hand side one of the most important
00:17:18Baroque churches the city has
00:17:21Actually the most beautiful baroque church
00:17:23North of the Alps, St. Charles
00:17:26It was erected to express the dynasties
00:17:33The Habsburgs' gratefulness and thankfulness
00:17:38For having survived the plague
00:17:41And in the foreground you saw some examples of Art Nouveau
00:17:45These little pavilions that are some stations
00:17:50Of our subway system
00:17:55Now in a couple of moments on the right hand side
00:18:00You will see a white cubical building
00:18:05With a golden cupola on it
00:18:08Made of more than 2,500 laurel leaves
00:18:13And that's the so called Secession building
00:18:17One of the remarkable sights of the city
00:18:21And the Secession is actually an association of artists
00:18:27Founded by Gustav Klimt and his friends
00:18:31And they split apart from the established association of artists
00:18:37And founded a new one, the Secession
00:18:41Since they seceded from the established foundation
00:18:45And they later built this exposition hall here
00:18:49On the right hand side
00:18:51One of the examples of Art Nouveau here in this city
00:18:57And it's one of the oldest museums of contemporary art
00:19:01In the world
00:19:04And many examples of Gustav Klimt and his friends
00:19:11Can be seen in the famous Beethoven frieze
00:19:15And similar examples of Art Nouveau painting
00:19:19And in front of us is the oldest and the biggest farmer's market
00:19:25We have here in Vienna, the so called Naschmarkt
00:19:30But that are all things that you have to discover on your next visit
00:19:39Because it will take a little bit longer than just a couple of hours
00:19:45To discover all the things that can be enjoyed here on this market
00:19:52Because over the last couple of years it has been converted to a food court
00:19:59So it's not just a grocery market like it was when I was a child
00:20:04So with the green stuff, fruits, vegetables in there
00:20:24And we are surrounding this building here
00:20:31And once again we have a construction site here
00:20:35Maybe you saw the construction sites when entering the city
00:20:40Because in every other corner we have a construction site
00:20:43Therefore here in Vienna at these times
00:20:47Because the city authorities are constructing another subway line
00:20:54We have five subway lines if you look at the map
00:20:56We numbered them 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6
00:21:00And some of our visitors would say
00:21:04Ah, the Viennese are too stupid to count from 1 to 5
00:21:08But no, we had a master plan in the 60s
00:21:12With six subway lines
00:21:15And the authorities started to construct them according to their priorities
00:21:24So they started with number 4
00:21:28According to their priorities without changing numbers
00:21:32They started with number 4 and then we had number 1
00:21:35So when I was a kid we had two subway lines, 1 and 4
00:21:39Quite astonishing
00:21:42And then came 2, and then came 6, and then came 3
00:21:46And now we are hoping for number 5
00:21:49And we are crossing once again the St. Charles Square
00:21:51On the left hand side there is the spike of the cathedral
00:21:55That can be seen
00:21:58And that's the final destination of our walking tour
00:22:02That will follow this little driving tour
00:22:06Once again on the right hand side you have this beautiful church
00:22:09St. Charles Church, this remarkable baroque church of the 18th century
00:22:14And the examples of Art Nouveau architecture
00:22:17Some stations of our oldest subway line
00:22:21And here once again from the front side here on the left hand side
00:22:27The Musikverein concert hall
00:22:31And every year you can see the New Year's concert here inside
00:22:41And of course this concert hall has also a reputation
00:22:45For its acoustic situation, especially the golden hall inside
00:22:51Because it's more or less built like the corpus of a violin
00:22:57And therefore it has a fantastic acoustic situation
00:23:04And once again ladies and gentlemen we are crossing the Schwarzenberg Square
00:23:16And once again we will see the Russian
00:23:21I'm a little bit astonished because usually there is a jet fountain
00:23:26That can be seen in front of the Russian
00:23:29And some Viennese are usually making jokes
00:23:32Ah, you turned on the jet fountain so that the Russian can't be seen anymore
00:23:37But no, the jet fountain is way older
00:23:41It stood even there before the Nazis
00:23:45And even though you can't see the jet fountain
00:23:49I have to talk a little bit about the water
00:23:52Because the water supply in Vienna is excellent
00:23:55We have our aqueduct connecting Vienna with some alpine mountains
00:24:01And we get 500,000 cubic meters of high quality crystal clear tap water every day
00:24:10So no Austrian, no Viennese in particular would buy bottled water
00:24:17We just buy bottled water if we need a container to carry the water
00:24:23But at home I would never buy bottled water
00:24:26Because our tap water is excellent and of course you can give it a try in the evening
00:24:29And that's also your port
00:24:32And the high quality of tap water of course is the third element
00:24:39And we are about to enter the Ring Road ladies and gentlemen
00:24:43And as I mentioned something about wine
00:24:46If you look out of the window on the right hand side
00:24:49You see the smallest vineyard of the city and the country
00:24:52You see the small vineyard here
00:24:54And it's definitely a vineyard
00:24:57It belongs to one of the most famous wine producers of the city
00:25:01And the mayor of the city usually as a traditional ceremony
00:25:07He starts the harvest of the new wine traditionally in a ceremony here
00:25:14On this smallest and most expensive vineyard of the city
00:25:19We are starting with the first one here
00:25:22This glorious hotel
00:25:25One of the first addresses of the city hotel imperial
00:25:28Where Charlie Chaplin, Queen Elizabeth and the Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson
00:25:34Once stayed here
00:25:37They all stayed in the same room but not at the same time of course
00:25:41And Michael Jackson even comes to visit
00:25:44Michael Jackson even composed his famous song in the hotel imperial
00:25:49So everything is connected with music here in this city
00:25:54And in a couple of moments ladies and gentlemen
00:25:59You will see the spike of the cathedral once again
00:26:04And there is also an important mural
00:26:08You will see the spike of the cathedral once again
00:26:11And there is also an important building here on the right hand side
00:26:18And it's the famous state opera of the city
00:26:22It can be said that along with the Metropolitan Opera of New York
00:26:26And the Scala of Milan it's one of the most prestigious of its kind
00:26:30And it's also the venue where the annual opera ball
00:26:34An elegant event of the ball season takes place
00:26:40And also some international guests usually come
00:26:44And a couple of years ago Goldie Hawn came here
00:26:48And she was so excited about the ball
00:26:51That she said the Viennese they have great balls
00:26:56And on the right hand side you see Wolfgang Marius Mozart
00:27:01This monument in the garden
00:27:04I'm sure you will hear something about Wolfgang Marius Mozart
00:27:10On your trip, will you?
00:27:13Are you doing Sanskrit or something like that?
00:27:16No?
00:27:18Yeah? No?
00:27:20No
00:27:21No?
00:27:23No, ok
00:27:25Well, anyway
00:27:27I can tell you something about Mozart while we are walking
00:27:32He was one, definitely one of the most important
00:27:38One of the most important musicians, composers of our history
00:27:45And these two buildings on our left hand side are also part of our history
00:27:51The most important museums
00:27:54And we will see them on our walking path
00:28:01Because in a couple of moments we are starting to walk here
00:28:08Surrounded by a parliament
00:28:13Here on our left hand side, ladies and gentlemen, you see a Greek temple
00:28:18And that's our parliament
00:28:22It looks like a Greek temple because the architect Theophil Hansen
00:28:26Thought that democracy and parliamentarism are Greek concepts
00:28:30And therefore he built our parliament as a Greek temple
00:28:35And you saw maybe the ancient goddess Athene
00:28:40The goddess of wisdom standing in front of the building
00:28:44And some Austrians are making jokes about that
00:28:46They say, ah, she doesn't look into the right direction
00:28:49She should look inside and spread some wisdom like the politicians
00:28:53But anyway, she stands in front of the building
00:28:56Which we are surrounding now
00:28:59And once we are turning left, ladies and gentlemen
00:29:01You can look out of the right window on the right hand side
00:29:05And you see the tower of a building that looks like a church
00:29:10But it isn't the church, it is the city hall of this city
00:29:16And why do we have such a style, such a building as a city hall?
00:29:24Why? Because this neo-gothic style was considered to be
00:29:30The reflection of a self-confident civic society
00:29:35But to be honest, the city of Munich had such a building
00:29:39And the city of Brussels had such a building
00:29:42So the Viennese said some 100 years ago
00:29:45We want such a style as well
00:29:47So we have such a city hall
00:29:50And now on our right hand side also quite impressive
00:29:54The Justice Palace, so the supreme court of this country
00:30:00And right in front of us the dome of one of the two
00:30:07Most prestigious and most important museums of this city
00:30:11Of the Natural History Museum
00:30:13And that's actually the point where we are hopping off
00:30:16And where we are continuing our walk
00:30:22Where we continue our tour walking, that's what I meant
00:30:27So ladies and gentlemen, in just a few moments
00:30:32We will jump off the coach and we will continue walking
00:30:37And as far as I know, your schedule
00:30:40Afterwards we are immediately walking to the dinner
00:30:49To the restaurant
00:30:51And some of you are planning to have a concert
00:30:55And so on and so forth
00:30:57So I'm sure you want to see the coach before dinner
00:31:02So please bring everything with you, what you need
00:31:05Within the next two or three hours, ok?
00:31:35Thank you
00:32:05In the moment no, at the end of the tour you will have many many souvenir shops
00:32:28And we are staying just here in the shade
00:32:31Because it's more comfortable
00:32:32But of course in the center you have this impression
00:32:36Of the two buildings to the left and to the right
00:32:39But first of all I would like to mention this lady here in the center
00:32:43That's the most important lady of our history
00:32:46She ruled the country for 40 years, Maria Teresa
00:32:50And she did it as a lady
00:32:54As a woman, yeah
00:32:56And how come that she did it as a lady
00:33:02Because usually 200 years ago you needed to be male to inherit the throne
00:33:08So how come that she got the chance to rule the country
00:33:12And many other countries
00:33:14Her father trusted two daughters
00:33:17And he sent around his diplomats throughout Europe
00:33:21To ask for acceptance of this succession
00:33:25And to make a long story short
00:33:27The other kings didn't accept it
00:33:29And the outcome was a big war
00:33:30And to make a long story short again
00:33:32She won this war
00:33:34The Austrian Succession War
00:33:36Of course, otherwise we wouldn't have a monument
00:33:38We wouldn't talk about this lady anymore
00:33:40And later she turned out to become
00:33:43One of the most intelligent, smartest
00:33:48And most brilliant leaders we ever had
00:33:54Many many reforms were taking place in her time
00:33:56So for instance abolishing torture
00:33:59Introducing compulsory education for everybody
00:34:03Kicking out the aristocrats from the administration of the country
00:34:07Introducing the modern concept of educated bureaucrats
00:34:11In the administration
00:34:13There were just a few of her many many reforms
00:34:17So she really became the mother of the nation
00:34:20The mother of our modern state
00:34:23But not just in a political sense
00:34:25Because the dynasty died almost out with her
00:34:29With her and her sister
00:34:31And if you are the head of an imperial or royal family
00:34:34Of course you need to make sure that your family will live on
00:34:38So how would you do that?
00:34:40Yeah, exactly
00:34:42With children
00:34:44So she became the mother of 16 children
00:34:46One six
00:34:4816 children, the lady over there
00:34:51Oh boy
00:34:53And that ladies especially
00:34:58Is the moment where I am quite eager
00:35:01To destroy this Disney dream
00:35:04Of living the life of a princess
00:35:07Because the Habsburgs quite often used their children
00:35:12Especially the girls
00:35:14For their marriage policy
00:35:17Because ladies and gentlemen
00:35:20Or especially ladies
00:35:22If you were a princess
00:35:24They would have shown you a small painting
00:35:27With a male face on it
00:35:29At your age of 8 or 9
00:35:32And they would have told you ladies
00:35:34That's your future husband
00:35:37And if you were lucky
00:35:39It was a handsome guy
00:35:41With 8 or 9 years
00:35:44But if you were unlucky
00:35:46He had 30 years more than you
00:35:49And if you were super unlucky
00:35:50It was your own uncle
00:35:53And that happened
00:35:55Not just once
00:35:57Because from a dynastical position
00:35:59It's not the most stupid idea
00:36:03To arrange marriages like that
00:36:05Within the family
00:36:07To keep the heritage together
00:36:09And the marriage policy
00:36:11Was actually the big superpower of the Habsburgs
00:36:14Many, many countries
00:36:16Like Czech Republic today
00:36:18Hungary, Spain even
00:36:20They inherited all those countries
00:36:23And from this marriage policy
00:36:26Definitely you ladies and gentlemen
00:36:28You know the most famous victim
00:36:31Of this marriage policy
00:36:33That's her daughter Maria Antonia
00:36:35Maria Antonia got married to the French king later
00:36:38And in France they called her Marie Antoinette
00:36:41And you all know what happened
00:36:43To Marie Antoinette
00:36:45At the beginning of the French Revolution
00:36:47So that's about
00:36:48The dream life of a princess
00:36:52And when standing here ladies and gentlemen
00:36:55And of course we have to get closer a little bit
00:36:58You see the big, big, big, big museums here
00:37:04And especially that one on the other side
00:37:06Is of importance
00:37:08That's one of the most brilliant
00:37:10Arts collections on this globe
00:37:12That's the famous Kunsthistorisches Museum in German
00:37:14Or the Museum of Arts History
00:37:16Many, many paintings you already know
00:37:18Inside of the Medusa from Rembrandt
00:37:20And Bruegel, or Bruegel
00:37:22Or however you would pronounce
00:37:24This Flemish painter
00:37:26Some Rubens
00:37:28And so can be seen in there
00:37:30And some other precious items
00:37:32Like incredible ivory carvings
00:37:34And machinery from the 16th century
00:37:37It's really a great museum
00:37:39You need to come again ladies and gentlemen
00:37:41And it's not just the interior
00:37:43It's also the architecture
00:37:45Because in other countries
00:37:46You have some formerly used
00:37:50Some buildings used as imperial palaces
00:37:54Converted to museums
00:37:56But here not
00:37:58These two were designed, erected
00:38:00And built as museums
00:38:02So the interior architecture
00:38:04All the halls and paintings in there
00:38:06Reflect their function as museums
00:38:08So it's definitely worth coming again
00:38:11And visiting these museums
00:38:14And if we are getting into the center
00:38:16You see they look similar
00:38:20We have to talk about that
00:38:38And in between there was another
00:38:40That was Charles V
00:38:41The one who said
00:38:43I'm ruling an empire
00:38:45Which the son never said
00:38:47And that was one
00:38:50Yeah that was
00:38:52Similar
00:38:54In a decided way
00:38:56And sometimes also
00:38:58Which one is which one
00:39:00And we have a stupid
00:39:02Rule of thumb for that
00:39:04I say, I warn you
00:39:06It's a stupid rule
00:39:08But anyway it works
00:39:09Because we came from there
00:39:11Maybe you remember
00:39:13And there's the opera
00:39:15So that must be the direction of arts
00:39:17So we have the museum of arts here
00:39:19And on the other side
00:39:21You remember there's the parliament
00:39:23So as a consequence
00:39:25This must be the museum
00:39:27Where the stuffed monkeys
00:39:29And the animals without backbones are stored
00:39:39So actually the double headed eagle
00:39:41Is a Byzantine symbol
00:39:44Good
00:39:46So ladies and gentlemen
00:39:48Are the hero square
00:39:50That's the biggest square
00:39:52Inside the ring road
00:39:54And it can be easily seen
00:39:56That we are not the only one
00:39:58That has a ring road
00:40:00And it's the biggest square
00:40:02Inside the ring road
00:40:04And it can be easily seen
00:40:06That we are not the only one
00:40:07And it can be easily seen
00:40:09That we are not in the United Kingdom
00:40:11Or in France
00:40:13Because in London or in Paris
00:40:15We would have 200 heroes
00:40:17On a hero square
00:40:19We just have two
00:40:21Small country, just two heroes
00:40:23And especially that guy
00:40:25Here is of importance
00:40:27That's Prince Eugene of Savoy
00:40:29The biggest field marshal
00:40:31We ever had in our history
00:40:33He led Austria to its biggest size
00:40:35In terms of territory
00:40:37In terms of the Belvedere Palace
00:40:39We saw a couple of minutes ago
00:40:41Where we got up the coach
00:40:43For the first photo stop
00:40:45That was his summer residence
00:40:47He was quite a rich man
00:40:49And the other guy
00:40:51Was also a field marshal
00:40:53Archduke Charles
00:40:55Of Habsburg
00:40:57And he won a battle
00:40:59Against Napoleon
00:41:01Of course we lost the war
00:41:03We lost five wars
00:41:05Against Napoleon
00:41:07But anyway
00:41:09At least a battle
00:41:11And if you're winning a battle
00:41:13You get the monument
00:41:15And you see
00:41:17The 15 tons of metal
00:41:19Are just based on two horseshoes
00:41:21Not too bad
00:41:23And what else can be seen
00:41:25You see this big, big complex here
00:41:27And this big building complex
00:41:29Is just one building
00:41:31It's the former winter residence
00:41:33Of the Habsburgs
00:41:3518 wings, 19 courtyards
00:41:372,600 representatives
00:41:39For rooms and halls
00:41:41Incredibly big
00:41:43And it was just a winter residence
00:41:45Because there was also
00:41:47A summer residence
00:41:49And that's a little bit
00:41:51Way out of the city
00:41:53So there are actually
00:41:55Two residences
00:41:57Within the same city
00:41:59You want to ask Matt
00:42:01For what reason
00:42:03You would have
00:42:05Two different
00:42:07Residences
00:42:09Within the same city
00:42:11You would invest a fortune
00:42:13Into this palace
00:42:15And another fortune
00:42:17Into the other one
00:42:19Who would do that?
00:42:21That leads me back
00:42:23To one of the first ideas
00:42:25I shared with you
00:42:27The city is surrounded
00:42:29With ring roads
00:42:31And that's the position
00:42:33Where the city fortification
00:42:35Walls were standing
00:42:37Through the lanes
00:42:39And the streets of the city
00:42:41And we had in those days
00:42:43A transportation system
00:42:45Like that
00:42:47Based on horses
00:42:49And the horses
00:42:51They do not just work
00:42:53They also leave something behind
00:42:55And if you also take into account
00:42:57That the city didn't have
00:42:59A proper sewage system
00:43:01These three elements
00:43:03No wind, excrements
00:43:05And no sewage system
00:43:07Everybody liked
00:43:09And of course
00:43:11Those who could afford
00:43:13Bought something outside
00:43:15For the hot summer time
00:43:17And the other palaces
00:43:19Outside of the city
00:43:21Were built to enjoy the summer time
00:43:23But this big thing here
00:43:25Was the wind tunnel
00:43:37The world has long been lost
00:43:42Over the chemtrails
00:43:46The air is full of magic
00:43:51No fears, no worries
00:43:54They say
00:43:56Only the truth
00:43:58Nothing is lost and remains
00:44:01The truth comes to light
00:44:02The truth comes to light
00:44:06If you pull it
00:44:08Or not
00:44:11Nanotubes
00:44:13Swirl around
00:44:16Make people stupid and sluggish
00:44:20They stand around
00:44:22Without a name
00:44:25And mighty ghosts
00:44:27Move themselves
00:44:29Why doesn't anyone
00:44:30Come in here
00:44:34Shimmering like a rainbow
00:44:38The air here
00:44:40Will soon go out
00:44:43They lied to you
00:44:48Over the chemtrails
00:44:52The air is full of magic
00:44:57No fears, no worries
00:45:00They say
00:45:02Only the truth
00:45:04Nothing is lost and remains
00:45:30That's why we have the national flag
00:45:32Of the coat of arms
00:45:33On top of the roof
00:45:34Red, white, red
00:45:36The blue one is the European Union
00:45:38Red, white, red
00:45:39Is the Austrian flag
00:45:40And some of my colleagues
00:45:41Will tell you the story
00:45:42You see the flag on top of the roof
00:45:44That means that the president
00:45:45Is in his office
00:45:47Yeah, look at the white shirts
00:45:48And well, it can be possible
00:45:50But if you are Austrian
00:45:52You would know
00:45:53It can't be true
00:45:56Because
00:45:58Our president
00:45:59Is a heavy smoker
00:46:01And he is not allowed
00:46:02To smoke in his office anymore
00:46:04Because no smoking
00:46:05In public buildings anymore
00:46:07So he needs to step down
00:46:09Every half an hour
00:46:10To have his cigarette
00:46:11And reeling and hoisting the flag
00:46:12Every half an hour
00:46:13Nobody can do that
00:46:15So it shows that he is in the country
00:46:17Somewhere
00:46:18Maybe behind you
00:46:20Maybe in his office
00:46:21Maybe at home
00:46:23And so the flag
00:46:25Will just disappear
00:46:26Once he leaves
00:46:27For a state visit
00:46:29And something else
00:46:31You see the big
00:46:33Green roof
00:46:34Here on the white building
00:46:35That's the National Theater
00:46:36And this church-like building
00:46:37Over there
00:46:38As mentioned
00:46:39That's the City Hall
00:46:40And some of you guys
00:46:42Asked me for recommendations
00:46:44For the evening
00:46:46Because some of you
00:46:47Do not want to go to the concert
00:46:49In front of
00:46:51The big City Hall
00:46:54There is kind of a movie festival
00:46:56They are playing movies
00:46:58With classical music
00:47:00Or jazz music
00:47:01And stuff like that
00:47:02And you have a little food court
00:47:04Where you can have a sip
00:47:06Or even a second dinner
00:47:08If you want to
00:47:10That's at least one recommendation
00:47:12I hope I didn't
00:47:13Interfere
00:47:19Before the first world war
00:47:21They had of course
00:47:23A little bit more money
00:47:24Than the republic today
00:47:26Good
00:47:27I have a story
00:47:28Ladies and gentlemen
00:47:29I would like to share with you
00:47:31Because it must be told
00:47:33At this point
00:47:34You see this
00:47:35Is one of the monuments
00:47:37Of one of the darkest
00:47:39Or let's say
00:47:40The darkest period
00:47:41Of our history
00:47:43Because on this balcony
00:47:45On the 15th of March
00:47:471938
00:47:49Adolf Hitler
00:47:50Declared the annexation
00:47:52The so-called
00:47:53Anschluss
00:47:54Of his former home city
00:47:55His home country
00:47:56To the German Nazis
00:47:58And immediately after that
00:48:00The terrible fate
00:48:01Of the Jewish population began
00:48:04The Nazis forced them
00:48:06To
00:48:07The Nazis forced them
00:48:09To
00:48:10Clean the city streets
00:48:12On their knees
00:48:13Surrounded by
00:48:14Former friends
00:48:16Former neighbors
00:48:17Former clients
00:48:19And they were shouting at them
00:48:21They were spitting at them
00:48:22They were giving them names
00:48:23They were laughing at them
00:48:24And you all know
00:48:25The history became worse
00:48:27Because a couple of
00:48:29A couple of
00:48:31Months after that
00:48:33The Second World War began
00:48:35And with the Second World War
00:48:36The Holocaust
00:48:37The Shoah
00:48:38And the result of the Shoah
00:48:39Was the complete extinction
00:48:40Of Jewish life in the city
00:48:42The complete destruction
00:48:44Of the Jewish community
00:48:46From the 140,000 members
00:48:48Of the Jewish community
00:48:4916,000 were brutally killed
00:48:51Slaughtered and massacred
00:48:52In the Nazi concentration camps
00:48:54Not in Mauthausen
00:48:55Which is still in Austrian soil
00:48:57But the majority
00:48:59Was forced
00:49:01To move to
00:49:02Theresienstadt
00:49:04And that is
00:49:06Quite close to Prague
00:49:08And then
00:49:10They were killed in Auschwitz
00:49:12And the 80,000
00:49:17The 80,000 members
00:49:18Of our Jewish community
00:49:20Who survived the Holocaust
00:49:21The Shoah
00:49:22They quite understandably
00:49:23Lost their relationship
00:49:24To their former city
00:49:26And to their former country
00:49:27And they emigrated
00:49:28Most of them
00:49:29To New York
00:49:31To the United States
00:49:33Or to Palestine
00:49:34What later became Israel
00:49:36And
00:49:38In 1945
00:49:40Finally the city
00:49:42And the country
00:49:43Was liberated
00:49:44By the Soviet Union
00:49:46And one could say
00:49:48Or one could think
00:49:49That was the end
00:49:50Of a terrible story
00:49:51But it was not that easy
00:49:52Because many Austrians
00:49:53Leaned back and said
00:49:54Well, it wasn't our fault
00:49:56It was the Nazis
00:49:57It was the Germans
00:49:58We couldn't do anything against it
00:50:00We were victims
00:50:01It was the Germans
00:50:02It was the Nazis
00:50:03So everybody wanted
00:50:04To forget everything
00:50:06And everybody also
00:50:07Wanted to forget
00:50:09That among the most
00:50:10Terrible criminals
00:50:12Of the Nazi regime
00:50:13Were many Austrians
00:50:14Like Odilo Globochnik
00:50:16And Ernst Kaltenbrunner
00:50:18But many people
00:50:19Wanted to forget everything
00:50:20And you see
00:50:21I'm not the youngest anymore
00:50:23I'm a child of the 70s
00:50:25And even I
00:50:26In my school
00:50:27I had a history teacher
00:50:29Who told us
00:50:30We will talk about that later
00:50:31We will talk about that later
00:50:32We will talk about that later
00:50:33But this later never happened
00:50:35And
00:50:39I actually never
00:50:40Talked about that
00:50:42But
00:50:43This tendency
00:50:44To forget everything
00:50:45Ended in 1986
00:50:47When a person called
00:50:48Kurt Weitkamp
00:50:49Was elected president
00:50:50Maybe you remember the name
00:50:51He was quite a prestigious
00:50:52Diplomat in the 70s
00:50:54The
00:50:55Secretary General
00:50:56Of the United Nations
00:50:58He was not a big war criminal
00:51:00But a member of
00:51:01This generation
00:51:02Who tried to forget
00:51:04And with this
00:51:06It was actually
00:51:07That a real liberation process
00:51:08Began
00:51:10And many Austrians
00:51:11Discovered that
00:51:12Their fathers and grandfathers
00:51:13Were not just family men
00:51:15But also
00:51:16Former criminals
00:51:17And murderers
00:51:18And
00:51:20That's why
00:51:21I'm telling you
00:51:22The story here
00:51:23Because this
00:51:24Is a monument
00:51:25For this terrible history
00:51:26And
00:51:27Even though it's visible
00:51:28For our visitors
00:51:29And
00:51:30Tourists
00:51:31It's way more important
00:51:32For us
00:51:33To remember us
00:51:34That this terrible history
00:51:35Must never
00:51:36Ever happen again
00:51:42I also make a
00:51:43Bit of a song
00:51:44About the
00:51:45Way smaller
00:51:46Jewish community
00:51:47Of 9000 members
00:51:48More or less
00:51:49And
00:51:50They are not the
00:51:51Children or
00:51:52Grandchildren
00:51:53Of the former
00:51:54Jewish community
00:51:55They most often
00:51:56Live in Brooklyn
00:51:57Or northern
00:51:58Parts of Jerusalem
00:51:59Or Be'er Sheva
00:52:00Or Tel Aviv
00:52:01But
00:52:02We have many
00:52:03Former immigrants
00:52:04Of the Soviet Union
00:52:06And so many
00:52:07Of our current
00:52:08Members of the
00:52:09Jewish community
00:52:10Of Russia
00:52:11Is the first one
00:52:20How big is it?
00:52:21Definitely big
00:52:222600 rooms
00:52:23Wow
00:52:24And somebody
00:52:25Sometimes asks me
00:52:28Who uses an apartment
00:52:29With 2600 rooms?
00:52:31And the answer is
00:52:32Quite simple
00:52:33Nobody
00:52:34Because not even
00:52:35The emperor
00:52:36Uses an apartment
00:52:37With 2600 rooms
00:52:39He uses maybe
00:52:403 or 4 rooms
00:52:41For his personal
00:52:42Life and business
00:52:43So what's the use
00:52:44Of the other
00:52:452597
00:52:46Or something
00:52:47Like that
00:52:48Well
00:52:49We have to know
00:52:50That every single
00:52:51Member of the
00:52:52Imperial dynasty
00:52:53Enjoyed the
00:52:54Service of
00:52:55Minimum 30
00:52:56Up to 50
00:52:57Personal servants
00:52:59So
00:53:00Cutting your nails
00:53:01Polishing your shoes
00:53:02Preparing your food
00:53:03You had
00:53:05A different one
00:53:07And
00:53:08Can you imagine
00:53:09If you're the mother
00:53:10Of 60 of us
00:53:11You're the command
00:53:12Of an army
00:53:13Of personal servants
00:53:14And there's the
00:53:15Actual army
00:53:16The guardians
00:53:17Protecting the palace
00:53:18And the imperial family
00:53:20And 150 people
00:53:21Working in the kitchen
00:53:23And
00:53:25What else
00:53:26Today
00:53:27If you're among
00:53:28The upper class
00:53:29You have your
00:53:30Lamborghini
00:53:31Or your Bentley
00:53:32Car
00:53:33And in the evening
00:53:34You just put it
00:53:35In the garage
00:53:36And that's it
00:53:37But in the past
00:53:38Of course
00:53:39You had
00:53:40Luxury horse carriages
00:53:414 times
00:53:425 times
00:53:436 times bigger
00:53:44Than modern
00:53:45Luxury cars
00:53:46And the horses
00:53:47Fit into
00:53:48These
00:53:49Horse carriages
00:53:50In terms of
00:53:51Color
00:53:52And of course
00:53:53According to your rank
00:53:54You were the emperor
00:53:55You couldn't
00:53:56Leave the house
00:53:57Just with 2 horses
00:53:58Do you have a
00:53:59Slash in your name?
00:54:00No
00:54:01So how come
00:54:02That he's got a slash
00:54:03In his name?
00:54:04Francis II
00:54:05Was the last emperor
00:54:06Of the Roman Empire
00:54:07And he was
00:54:08The big opponent
00:54:09Of Napoleon
00:54:10And you know
00:54:11Ladies and gentlemen
00:54:12That Napoleon
00:54:13Was quite powerful
00:54:14Quite a powerful
00:54:15Warlord
00:54:16On the battlegrounds
00:54:17Of the continent
00:54:18In his days
00:54:19And he almost
00:54:20Kicked him
00:54:21Off his
00:54:22Throat
00:54:23And on the peak
00:54:24Of his power
00:54:25Napoleon
00:54:26Crowned himself
00:54:27Emperor of the French
00:54:28And this
00:54:29Habsburg guy
00:54:30Said
00:54:31Wait, wait, wait
00:54:32Wait a minute
00:54:33What this
00:54:34Avenue from Corsica
00:54:35Can do
00:54:36I can do
00:54:37Myself
00:54:38And out
00:54:39From scratch
00:54:40He designed
00:54:41The new empire
00:54:42The Austrian empire
00:54:43And of course
00:54:44He made himself
00:54:45Emperor
00:54:46Of course
00:54:47If I'm creating an empire
00:54:48I make myself emperor
00:54:49Of course
00:54:50And thus making him
00:54:51Francis I
00:54:52Of the Austrian empire
00:54:53And the interesting
00:54:54The funny thing is
00:54:55That for a small period
00:54:56In time
00:54:57From 1804
00:54:58To 1806
00:54:59He was both
00:55:00A single
00:55:01Double emperor
00:55:02In history
00:55:03From Adam and Eve
00:55:04Up to us
00:55:05Here
00:55:06There was just
00:55:07One person
00:55:08Emperor
00:55:09Of two empires
00:55:10At the same time
00:55:11This guy here
00:55:12Francis II
00:55:13And all the others
00:55:14Like Victoria
00:55:15You know
00:55:16And she was
00:55:17Empress of India
00:55:18And queen of England
00:55:19Queen of England
00:55:20And this
00:55:21William of Germany
00:55:22You know
00:55:23This guy
00:55:24He was emperor
00:55:25Of Germany
00:55:26But he was
00:55:27King of Prussia
00:55:28But he was
00:55:29Emperor
00:55:30Wow
00:55:31And he was
00:55:32By the way
00:55:33The grandson
00:55:34Of the big lady
00:55:35Out there
00:55:36And the grandfather
00:55:37Of Francis II
00:55:38If you have
00:55:39Seen him somewhere
00:55:40So
00:55:41It's not so
00:55:42Terrible
00:55:43To learn a little bit
00:55:44About the family tree
00:55:45Of the emperor
00:55:46But
00:55:47Ta-da
00:55:48There it is
00:55:49This guy
00:55:50And
00:55:51Algunos hablando
00:55:52Español
00:55:53Entre vosotros
00:55:54Anybody speaking
00:55:55Spanish
00:55:56My dear
00:55:57Good
00:55:58So I have
00:55:59To take it
00:56:00A little bit
00:56:01Different
00:56:02You all
00:56:03Have
00:56:04In the English language
00:56:05Seen like
00:56:06It sounds Greek to me
00:56:07It appears Greek to me
00:56:08For something weird
00:56:09Something unknown
00:56:10We have something
00:56:11Like that
00:56:12With this guy
00:56:13Here
00:56:14On top
00:56:15You have
00:56:16The name
00:56:17Ferdinand
00:56:18He was
00:56:19A Habsburg guy
00:56:20Coming from
00:56:21Spain
00:56:22And he brought
00:56:23All these
00:56:24Different manners
00:56:25These elegant
00:56:26Dresses
00:56:27And
00:56:28The special
00:56:29Traditions
00:56:30From Spain
00:56:31When he
00:56:32Represented
00:56:33His brother
00:56:34Here
00:56:35When he came
00:56:36Here in
00:56:37This city
00:56:38In this country
00:56:39And the
00:56:41What's it like
00:56:42To spend a day
00:56:43In the most
00:56:44Livable city
00:56:45In the world
00:56:46Let's find out
00:56:48I'm in Vienna
00:56:49The Austrian capital
00:56:50This amazing city
00:56:51Is full of
00:56:52Incredible buildings
00:56:54My day is going to be
00:56:55Filled with
00:56:56Architectural highlights
00:56:57Local cuisine
00:56:58And
00:56:59The world's
00:57:00Oldest
00:57:01Ferris wheel
00:57:06I'll also be meeting
00:57:07A local
00:57:08To find out
00:57:09Why Vienna
00:57:10Has been voted
00:57:11The most
00:57:12Livable city
00:57:13In the world
00:57:14By The Economist
00:57:15I'm starting my morning
00:57:16At the
00:57:17Steppensdom
00:57:18Or
00:57:19St. Stephen's Cathedral
00:57:20It's a major
00:57:21Landmark in the city
00:57:22And
00:57:23Isn't it gorgeous?
00:57:28The Gothic Cathedral
00:57:29Sits in the heart
00:57:30Of the inner city
00:57:31And is the
00:57:32Tallest church
00:57:33In Austria
00:57:34I basically have to
00:57:35Crane my neck
00:57:36To see the spires
00:57:40Let's continue
00:57:41With a little bit
00:57:42Of a walking tour
00:57:43Of the city
00:57:44To take in some more
00:57:45Of the amazing
00:57:46Architectural highlights
00:57:47Here
00:57:51Like the huge
00:57:52Opera house
00:57:53In the city centre
00:57:57And
00:57:58Multiple palaces
00:58:00The Hofburg
00:58:01Is just a few minutes away
00:58:02It's the former
00:58:03Principal imperial
00:58:04Palace of the
00:58:05Habsburg dynasty
00:58:06You can also visit
00:58:07Schönbrunn Palace
00:58:08The main summer
00:58:09Residence of the
00:58:10Habsburg family
00:58:11Vienna was once
00:58:12One of the power
00:58:13Houses of European
00:58:14Monarchy
00:58:15Hence why there are
00:58:16So many palaces
00:58:17In and around the city
00:58:18More than 20
00:58:19But they aren't
00:58:20The only
00:58:21Architectural highlights
00:58:25This crazy
00:58:26Looking house
00:58:27Is an absolute
00:58:28Must visit
00:58:29Covered head to toe
00:58:30In greenery
00:58:31And shrubbery
00:58:32It's a little
00:58:33Oasis in the
00:58:34Middle of the city
00:58:36The Hundertwasser
00:58:37House
00:58:38Let's go check it out
00:58:41It's one of Vienna's
00:58:42Most visited
00:58:43Buildings
00:58:45So colourful
00:58:50The Hundertwasser
00:58:51House is an
00:58:52Apartment complex
00:58:53Completed in 1985
00:58:55After the idea
00:58:56Of Austrian artist
00:58:57Friedensreich Hundertwasser
00:58:59People live inside
00:59:00This cultural landmark
00:59:01So it can only be
00:59:02Viewed from the outside
00:59:03Cute little fountain
00:59:04Nice vibe
00:59:06But it's an amazing
00:59:07Place to walk around
00:59:13I've worked up
00:59:14Quite an appetite
00:59:15After all that
00:59:16Walking around
00:59:17So I'm heading to
00:59:18The Naschmarkt for lunch
00:59:19This market has
00:59:20Around 120 stalls
00:59:21With all kinds of food
00:59:25Ok there's so many
00:59:26Different types of food here
00:59:28Austrian
00:59:30Italian
00:59:31Israeli
00:59:32But
00:59:34I'm searching for a
00:59:35Proper
00:59:37Viennese schnitzel
00:59:41Oh
00:59:42Here it is
00:59:44Wiener schnitzel
00:59:45Is a thin
00:59:46Breaded and pan-fried
00:59:47Cutlet
00:59:48Traditionally with veal
00:59:57Let's see if the
00:59:59Viennese schnitzel
01:00:00Tastes as good
01:00:01If the Viennese schnitzel
01:00:02Tastes better in Austria
01:00:03Than it does anywhere else
01:00:20That is very good
01:00:25Now I'm meeting
01:00:26Lennart Pichler
01:00:27A local who grew up here
01:00:29To find out why
01:00:30Vienna is the most
01:00:31Livable city in the world
01:00:33For example
01:00:34The public transport system
01:00:35In Vienna
01:00:36It's a blast
01:00:37It just makes
01:00:38Your life easier
01:00:39You know
01:00:40For example
01:00:41You really don't need
01:00:42A car in the city
01:00:43It's especially appealing
01:00:44To younger people
01:00:45Because there's no need
01:00:46For a car in here
01:00:47Every single spot
01:00:48You can reach with
01:00:49Public transport
01:00:50In like
01:00:5140 to 60 minutes
01:00:52Look at the surrounding
01:00:53This is another one
01:00:54You've got so many
01:00:55Beautiful parks
01:00:56The city just has
01:00:57So so much to offer
01:00:58In so many different
01:00:59Categories
01:01:00And what are your
01:01:01Favorite things about the city?
01:01:02Not only you can go
01:01:03To a park
01:01:04Or enjoy the nature
01:01:05In summer times
01:01:06Like this
01:01:07But there are also
01:01:08So many things
01:01:09Like cultural things
01:01:10You know
01:01:11Like
01:01:12Museums
01:01:13Or an art exhibition
01:01:14Or something like that
01:01:15The biggest museum
01:01:16Is Vienna itself
01:01:17In my opinion
01:01:18Because it's like
01:01:19An open air museum
01:01:20If you go through
01:01:21And look at the architecture
01:01:22And stuff like that
01:01:23In Vienna
01:01:24There's a coffee specialty
01:01:25Which is called
01:01:26Wiener Melange
01:01:27It's like
01:01:28Coffee cappuccino
01:01:29Wiener Melange
01:01:30It means like
01:01:31When yeast mixed
01:01:32And the city
01:01:33Vienna
01:01:34Is just a mix
01:01:35Of different areas
01:01:36Different people
01:01:37From all over the place
01:01:38And these
01:01:39These differences
01:01:40Are what makes
01:01:41The city so enjoyable
01:01:42And so
01:01:43Exciting for me
01:01:44It's a good metaphor
01:01:45It's early afternoon now
01:01:47Which means
01:01:48It's the perfect time
01:01:49To visit one of Vienna's
01:01:50Cultural institutions
01:01:51The coffee house
01:01:53Although
01:01:54The most traditional ones
01:01:55Are
01:01:56Also pretty busy
01:01:57Hi, I'm standing in
01:01:58The queue for a bit
01:01:59Yeah, I want to be in there
01:02:01Café de Mel
01:02:02Has been around
01:02:03Since 1786
01:02:04It's elaborate
01:02:05It's traditional
01:02:06And, to be honest
01:02:07It's pretty expensive
01:02:08It is amazing to see
01:02:09But there are also
01:02:10Many other wonderful cafes
01:02:11That aren't quite as busy
01:02:12Or pricey
01:02:13I try the Wiener Melange
01:02:14That Leonard recommended
01:02:15And get some
01:02:16Kaiserschmarrn too
01:02:17Scrambled pancake
01:02:18Delicious
01:02:19Cheers
01:02:21Coffee in Vienna
01:02:22Is like
01:02:23An art form
01:02:24And a lifestyle
01:02:25You just have to
01:02:26Buy a single cup of coffee
01:02:27And you can linger here
01:02:28The whole day
01:02:29In one of the city's
01:02:30Grand old coffeehouses
01:02:31They're often described
01:02:32As public living rooms
01:02:33And they're perfect
01:02:34To just sit back
01:02:35And enjoy your coffee
01:02:36While you
01:02:36Get a nice
01:02:50relax and do a little bit of people watching.
01:02:59Now for my final stop of the day, Prater, a huge public park that used to be where royalty
01:03:05went to hunt. Now one corner of it has been turned into an amusement park.
01:03:10Did you know that this is the oldest ferris wheel in the world? Seems like the perfect
01:03:16end to a wonderful day. Let's go.
01:03:23This is so worth a trip. You can see the whole city from up here.
01:03:40It's just such a beautiful city. I can 100% see why Vienna is so livable. I could spend
01:03:46days just hopping from coffee house to coffee house, walking through the streets, admiring
01:03:52the architecture. Perfect.
01:03:54Would you visit Vienna? And what other European cities do you want to see? Let us know in
01:03:58the comments.
01:04:11Surprised. And from that time in the middle of the 16th century, they have been saying
01:04:17it sounds Spanish to me. It appears Spanish to me. If something weird, something astonishing,
01:04:22something surprising happens to me. And then it was also connected with the house.
01:04:28That is actually the entrance of the oldest part of the big palace. And if you're coming
01:04:36to Vienna, ladies and gentlemen, I have a recommendation for you. Just go inside there
01:04:40because there is the imperial treasury inside. And you can see the crowns and the regalia
01:04:47and the symbols of the two empires of the sky. And if you're a religious devout person,
01:04:52you can also see the horn of a unicorn, the eternal symbol of Christianity and the Holy
01:04:58Grail. They claim to have it. But if you don't believe in religion, it's in the jewellery.
01:05:08Biggest emerald of the world and many, many diamonds and so on. So maybe a reason for
01:05:13coming again.
01:05:28I've never seen anything like it that I've ever seen.
01:05:31It's gilded. It's gilded. So it's a super thin layer of silver. So it's not...
01:05:41It's flaky.
01:05:42It's flaky.
01:05:43Yeah.
01:05:44And it's...
01:05:59It's huge, yes?
01:06:02Yes.
01:06:03They all show the same ancient hero. It's Hercules.
01:06:09I like it. It's famous indeed.
01:06:11A mythological symbol for strength.
01:06:14Because he survived twelve mythological adventures in Greek mythology.
01:06:21And always showing his strength.
01:06:24And of course, it's a dynasty ruling a big country. We also wanted to show off your strength.
01:06:38Yes, that's solid gold up there. And the answer is, theoretically, yes. But super thin.
01:06:47It's plated gold. Of course, it's gilded. Usually gilded mural structure or wood carving.
01:06:59Shut up.
01:07:17Yeah, our Elisabeth.
01:07:33And on the other side, ladies and gentlemen, there's also one astonishing institution.
01:07:40It's the former Spanish writing school. Maybe you've heard about that. It was designed in the middle of the 16th century.
01:07:47So 1572 to be precise. And that was the time when the Habsburgs ruled Spain and Austria together.
01:07:57Let's get a little closer so maybe you can see the video.
01:08:03It's getting dark.
01:08:10Nowadays it's a tourist attraction.
01:08:19And what was the intention at the beginning?
01:08:22Even though we call it a braving school, the name is actually misleading.
01:08:27Because the focus was never braving.
01:08:29So it was not an association with the intention of training people to be on the walls.
01:08:36No, no, no, no. The focus was on the walls.
01:08:38It was a horses training academy.
01:08:41Because when they founded this institution, everybody knew how to be on the back of a horse.
01:08:48So the focus was on the horses.
01:08:51And those horses walking in there, they were quite noble.
01:08:57They were the famous Williamson horses.
01:08:59450 years old breed.
01:09:01And they are usually born black.
01:09:03Some of them are getting white, some of them are getting grey.
01:09:05Some of them are remaining black.
01:09:07And the most talented are selected for a 25 years lasting career as a master dancer in this institution.
01:09:16And they are really quite noble.
01:09:18Because every horse has a first and a last name.
01:09:22So if you happen to meet Gino Maestoso, supposedly he is a white horse.
01:09:29Because Maestoso is one of the most elegant among this dynasty of horses.
01:09:35One of the most elegant families.
01:09:37And see what they do.
01:09:41So they are still more or less conserving this tradition of fine horse training.
01:09:52And those horses of this elegant breed, who do not make it into the academy.
01:09:59They are usually sold to companies running horse marriages, what you saw.
01:10:05So you see the excellent career perspectives Vienna offers for horses.
01:10:11Ballet dancer or taxi driver.
01:10:51This is the entrance of the Hohenzollern Palace.
01:10:55The Palme d'Or residence.
01:10:57And look at this amazing piece of wax work over there.
01:11:01Built at the end of the 19th century.
01:11:04And when the emperor wanted to visit the city, he left here.
01:11:09So feel like an emperor or an empress.
01:11:12Because we also left from there.
01:11:15Innovations.
01:11:17But since you are planning to travel to Italy, I am not talking about that.
01:11:23Because Vienna was not so important in Roman times.
01:11:28We were just a small military outpost on the northern frontier of the Roman Empire.
01:11:34But ladies and gentlemen, we are walking along here.
01:11:38And while walking here, look inside this street.
01:11:43At the very end of this street, you will see a greyish brownish building with black windows.
01:11:49And that is the famous Café Central, where Stalin and Trotsky,
01:11:54you know these guys from Soviet Russia, they met for the first time in Vienna in 1930.
01:12:00In this coffee shop, what you are about to see once we continue to walk in this street.
01:12:12Viennese coffee shop.
01:12:28Family on scooter.
01:12:31So ladies and gentlemen, let me just mention one or two words about this street here.
01:12:48And the place over there.
01:12:50We are not here on exclusive, most expensive shopping malls of the city.
01:12:55The Kohlmarkt, in German the Kohlmarket in English.
01:12:59When I was a kid, all those shops looked like that one over there.
01:13:03But over the times, the international brands have come here.
01:13:07And you have all those flagships.
01:13:10But hopefully one institution will never change.
01:13:13That's that one here.
01:13:15It's the center, let's say the epicenter of the street cuisine of the city.
01:13:20It's called Demos. It was founded in 1786.
01:13:23And it's actually one of the most fancy shops in the city.
01:13:29And all these stools, pancakes, whatever you can dream up, can be ordered and enjoyed in there.
01:13:37Many things are bought in there, but will also buy in there.
01:13:41And they are focusing on a different tradition.
01:13:45On the cereal pancake, called Esserschmarrn.
01:13:49It's super fluffy, super fine.
01:13:51Cut into pieces.
01:13:53And it comes with caramel jam.
01:13:56And it's super fine.
01:13:58That's actually the most important dish they offer here.
01:14:03And if you would like to try it,
01:14:05under the bridge, right next to the cathedral,
01:14:08where our final stop on the walk is.
01:14:14Also a motivation to come back here.
01:14:18Just for the pancakes.
01:14:22And we are walking a little bit further.
01:14:25Right next to the corner, we turn to the right.
01:14:28Over Graben.
01:14:30The most important and beautiful shopping mall.
01:14:32We are getting closer and closer to the cathedral.
01:14:35So it's just a few more steps.
01:14:48It's awesome.
01:14:54Right now, so he wanted to just get in the air conditioning.
01:14:58Oh, that's pretty.
01:15:00I'm trying.
01:15:19Thank you.
01:15:26We know that there is something to do with praying.
01:15:29It can be easily deciphered.
01:15:31Because what do you see?
01:15:33Heaven packed with angels.
01:15:35And on top of it, the golden reflection of the Trinity.
01:15:42And it's a nice architectural thing.
01:15:46Because of the structure of the clouds.
01:15:50Against the shade of the buildings.
01:15:52And it makes all this part of the break.
01:15:56The heavens.
01:15:57But, of course, the gilded part.
01:16:10It would have been so easy.
01:16:12You see?
01:16:13It would have been so easy.
01:16:14Just like God told us.
01:16:15We are going to have faith.
01:16:16Right next to this.
01:16:4421 RMB for a ticket.
01:16:46You can see the oil painting.
01:16:48The sort of protective regulations.
01:16:51But, of course, this one was built in the 5th act.
01:16:57Because immediately after the war, they were not really strict.
01:17:03Because this little chapel is at the center of the cathedral.
01:17:07The very center of the city.
01:17:09St. Stephen's Cathedral.
01:17:12It's not the biggest.
01:17:14But it's the most important.
01:17:16Not the oldest.
01:17:17But it's the most important church of the city.
01:17:21If you would like to get a glimpse of the interior.
01:17:25You will go over there.
01:17:26And you see the main entrance is over there.
01:17:28And once you stand in front of the main entrance.
01:17:31You see a completely different style.
01:17:34Than this one here.
01:17:35Because you see here a façade in Gothic style.
01:17:39And if you are standing in front of the main entrance.
01:17:41You have Romanesque style.
01:17:43At Arc 100 we have two different styles.
01:17:45Because it was a church begun in 1137.
01:17:49Romanesque style.
01:17:51And 200 years later the city authorities wanted a bigger church.
01:17:56So they quite simply ordered a bigger church.
01:17:59And the master constructors were quite smart.
01:18:03They surrounded the whole church through the walls.
01:18:08Longer.
01:18:09Wider.
01:18:10And higher than the others.
01:18:11And once they were done with the vault.
01:18:14They demolished the interior.
01:18:16The outcome was a strange combination of these styles.
01:18:18But a very good church.
01:18:21And of course the most impressive for medieval people.
01:18:24That big steep roof.
01:18:31And of course for us.
01:18:33Now the tower is the most impressive.
01:18:35It was finished almost 600 years ago.
01:18:38And if you are quick.
01:18:40You can climb up to the tower.
01:18:42To this viewpoint up here.
01:18:45It's just 343 stairs ladies and gentlemen.
01:18:51Well but maybe you take it more easy cheesy.
01:19:05I don't know.
01:19:06I don't know.
01:19:07I don't know.
01:19:08I don't know.

01:21:29It's not to be done
01:21:35With us you can't do it
01:21:37It's not to be done
01:21:40It's not to be done
01:21:53Pin feathers float around
01:21:57Artificially from laboratories
01:22:02Why does nobody look here?
01:22:07The world has long been lost
01:22:12Over the chemtrails
01:22:16The air is probably very clean and rich
01:22:21No fears, no worries, you say
01:22:26Only the truth, nothing is hidden, stays hidden
01:22:31The truth does not come to light
01:22:35Whether you see it or not
01:22:40Nano-particles swirl around
01:22:45Make people stupid and sluggish
01:22:49Partially nameless, they stand around
01:22:53Powerless thoughts that move themselves
01:22:58Why does nobody look here?
01:23:03Shimmering like a rainbow
01:23:08The air will soon be very dark here
01:23:13They have won you over
01:23:18Over the chemtrails
01:23:22The air is probably very clean and rich
01:23:27No fears, no worries, you say
01:23:32Only the truth, nothing is hidden, stays hidden
01:23:37The truth does not come to light
01:23:41Whether you see it or not
01:23:46Transhumanist aspartame
01:23:50What will come of it?
01:23:55Let me go now
01:24:00Don't worry about it
01:24:04Whether it's absurd or beautiful
01:24:09What happens in our sky?
01:24:14How do people treat us?
01:24:19The pollution of our sky
01:24:24Over the chemtrails
01:24:28The air is probably very clean and rich
01:24:33No fears, no worries, you say
01:24:38Only the truth, nothing is hidden, stays hidden
01:24:43The truth does not come to light
01:24:47Black and white, that does not exist
01:24:52Who has been shocked by the chemtrails?
01:24:56Chemtrails? What's that supposed to mean?
01:25:01Those are punishments in the sky, you usually don't see them
01:25:06Punishments in the sky?
01:25:09You mean the planes?
01:25:11Chemtrails
01:25:12I don't know what that means
01:25:14Those are punishments in the sky
01:25:16Yes, you say that
01:25:18Those are chemtrails
01:25:20Chemtrails, not chemtrails
01:25:22Do you have to deal with a conspiracy theory?
01:25:27Where did you get that from?
01:25:29I got it from the internet
01:25:31Aren't you modern or what?
01:25:33From the internet
01:25:35Modern with his internet

01:25:49You shouldn't always believe everything
01:25:53Only what's on the internet
01:25:59Aren't you modern or what?
01:26:02You find everything on the internet
01:26:09That's what I told you
01:26:39I thought you were going to say you can't see
01:26:42But you can see

01:31:13I don't know if the people are better
01:31:17But who are they?
01:31:26They make war-shot bombs
01:31:30Quicksilver, Ebro
01:31:34They create lies
01:31:38To confuse you
01:31:41And they say you're free
01:31:45You bitches, come, come, be part of it
01:31:48It doesn't matter if the people say it
01:31:51Or you tie them up
01:31:55One, two, three, four
01:31:58Back, please, back, please
01:32:00Believe me, this song was written
01:32:03To make you happy
01:32:05One, two, three, four
01:32:07Back, please, back, please
01:32:09Believe me, you're not
01:32:12In the other class
01:32:14Believe me, believe me
01:32:16That something is going on with you
01:32:19Come, please, come, be part of it
01:32:21It doesn't matter if the people say it
01:32:23Or you tie them up
01:32:25It doesn't matter if the people say it
01:32:27You're in the wrong class
01:32:29On the stage
01:32:31The love you want
01:32:32Is the love you have
01:32:34It's not your fault
01:32:36But it's your fault
01:32:38That you're happy
01:32:40You're not so white-headed
01:32:42They make war-shot bombs
01:32:46Quicksilver, Ebro
01:32:48They create lies
01:32:50To confuse you
01:32:52And they say you're free
01:32:54You bitches, come, come, be part of it
01:32:56It doesn't matter if the people say it
01:32:58Or you tie them up
01:33:00One, two, three, four
01:33:02Back, please, back, please
01:33:04Believe me, you're not
01:33:06In the other class
01:33:08Believe me, believe me
01:33:10That something is going on with you
01:33:12Come, please, come, be part of it
01:33:14It doesn't matter if the people say it
01:33:16You're in the wrong class
01:33:18On the stage
01:33:20The love you want
01:33:22Is the love you have
01:33:24It doesn't matter if the people say it
01:33:26You're in the wrong class
01:33:27Believe me, believe me
01:33:29That something is going on with you
01:33:31Come, please, come, be part of it
01:33:33It doesn't matter if the people say it
01:33:35You're in the wrong class
01:33:37On the stage
01:33:39The love you want
01:33:41It's not your fault
01:33:43But it's your fault
01:33:45Because you're happy
01:33:47You're not so white-headed
01:33:49People say, you're free
01:33:51You're not so white-headed
01:33:53You're in the wrong class
01:33:55On the stage
01:34:27I will lock you up
01:34:31I will lock you up
01:34:35When I lock you up, you will be locked up
01:34:40I will lock you up
01:34:43I will lock you up
01:34:47When I lock you up, you will be locked up
01:34:52I will lock you up
01:34:54Lying and cheating all day long
01:35:00Can you not lead people into the light anymore?
01:35:06Do I bring myself down or do I never let it be?
01:35:12I say no
01:35:15No
01:35:18No
01:35:21No
01:35:22No
01:35:24No
01:35:28I will lock you up
01:35:32When I lock you up, you will be locked up
01:35:37I will lock you up
01:35:40I will lock you up
01:35:44When I lock you up, you will be locked up
01:35:49I will lock you up
01:35:52The truth is standing there all by itself
01:35:58Love brings me knowledge, it has short legs
01:36:04If you bring it, you are not better than it was
01:36:09It will be clear to you
01:36:12It will be clear
01:36:15It is all clear
01:36:19Yes
01:36:22Yes
01:36:25I will lock you up
01:36:29When I lock you up, you will be locked up
01:36:34I will lock you up
01:36:37I will lock you up
01:36:41When I lock you up, you will be locked up
01:36:46I will lock you up
01:36:49The truth is standing there all by itself
01:36:52It's just for me, it's just for me, it's just for me, it's just for me, it's just for me,
01:37:19it's just for me, it's just for me, it's just for me, it's just for me, it's just for me,
01:37:32for me, baby, just for me.
01:37:39But, baby, you know I'm just doing everything for you.
01:37:47It's been the end of the show, the sad one
01:37:53Blast it, I take it for a beat
01:37:57For a beat, for a beat
01:38:04For a beat, for a beat
01:38:10For a beat, for a beat
