00:00Yeah, I mean I fought really hard today, overall I think. I played well for the
00:09most part, I just didn't take care of my serve, so that was the biggest difference.
00:13Too many free points on my serve, so yeah. Thank you. Name and affiliation, one
00:21question each so I can get to as many people as possible. Brian.
00:26Brian Lewis from the New York Post. I'm curious, particularly with the doubles, I mean
00:30double calls, I mean was there something mechanical that you felt that was
00:35consistently giving you trouble? Yeah, I mean obviously I go down on my left side
00:40a lot on my serve and it's something I'm aware of, but it's tough in the moment to
00:44I guess try not to do it, so yeah. Willie. Willie Weinbaum from ESPN. You've just
00:52described a mechanical thing. What was going through your mind as your serve
00:56was deserting you? Get the serve in? Yeah, I mean I was just trying to commit to it
01:03and just stay calm, so yeah. Courtney. In previous press conferences you talked
01:13about not wanting to have regrets at this tournament. I'm curious, just with the
01:16fight back and everything, all the effort that you put in today, did you feel like
01:20you accomplished that goal for yourself or do you feel like you fell short of it?
01:24I mean mentally I gave it and emotionally I gave it my all. Basically there's things
01:28execution-wise where I'm like, okay I wish I could, obviously I wish I could
01:32serve better. I think if I would have did that it would have been a different
01:35story for me in the match, but Emma played really well. She did, I mean
01:41everything well. I thought she was really aggressive on my second serve, so putting
01:46more pressure on my serve and being solid from the baseline and you know
01:50she's, I mean I expected that going in. So emotionally I have no regrets, but
01:55obviously I wish I could execute things better. The tennis podcast, obviously on
02:02your run here last year a lot of the time you didn't find your top level, but
02:06you fought through and kind of developed a reputation for that. How different did
02:11today feel to the matches you played here last year? Yeah I mean I felt like I
02:17was, I mean from the ground I felt like I was getting better with each match
02:20honestly. Yeah I mean I thought I was hitting you know both sides decently
02:27well. I didn't return as well maybe in the first set and then even in the
02:30second, but I was able to find it. So yeah I mean obviously I didn't play like the
02:35best throughout the match, but there was moments where I was playing good tennis.
02:39So I think for me it's just trying to find that more consistently. Right.
02:44Hey Coco, tough one today. What the, can you sort of compare or think about the
02:51first sort of half of this year and you know really good results generally that
02:57you had in Australia and then Paris and some other places and then sort of this
03:02summer and you sent something was going on or just sort of these things happen
03:07and things come or has it been some sort of change and how's that been, what
03:13has it been like to experience as you're going through it? I mean I guess for me
03:19yeah it's not the summer that I want. I feel like there's like 70 other players
03:24in the draw that would love to have the summer that I had even though it's my
03:27least probably done well during this time of the year. So many people want to
03:31be in the forefront, so many people want to make the Olympics, so many people want
03:35to be flag bearers. So it's perspective. Obviously I'm because I'm
03:40wanting to reach a different level. It is disappointing but I'm not gonna beat
03:44myself up and be like this is so bad and yeah I expect better but at the end of
03:49the day it happened and I can I know I can turn it around. No, no, no, I know what
03:56you're, no, no, no, I know you, your question was fine. I was just giving your own stand. No, no, I understood what you meant.
04:03No, I know like this wasn't a great couple months so no I didn't take any
04:07offense to it. I'm just saying like trying to be perspective from other
04:11people.
04:13Rima.
04:15Hi Coco, Rima from the National. Coco there's still more to come in this year. I know you just walked off the court but I'm
04:20wondering given that this period you really wanted to do well, you had high
04:24standards for yourself, is there a bit of relief now going into what's coming and
04:29that there's nothing hanging over your head except like just moving forward the
04:32finals to look at and things like that?
04:34Yes and no. I mean I don't know what my schedule will look like at the end of this year. I feel like I want to spend a good
04:43training block. I hadn't had that since maybe before the clay season started so
04:49yeah I think I just will see how Asia goes and we'll see. I mean obviously if I
04:55qualify I'll play but I think for me in the long term I definitely want to get a
05:00good training block and I guess we'll see you know what how many tournaments I
05:04play for the rest of the year.
05:06Howard then Darcy. Howard.
05:08Hi Coco, Howard Fendrich with the Associated Press.
05:10Could you describe what Emma did that troubled you? Maybe even each of these last two times you've played her and was there anything different today?
05:22And also you got to know her, you probably knew her already but I'm imagining in
05:29Paris there was some extra time there as teammates and just maybe if you could
05:34describe her as a person off the court.
05:36Yeah no she I think she played me similar to how she played me at
05:42Wimbledon and you know the difference in Wimbledon today I think I was just
05:47mentally better so that's why I got to the three third set but you know I think
05:52in the future I have to take care of her. She's a great returner. I think she
05:56does a great job of just redirecting. She's kind of an all-court player. She
06:01can do everything so I don't think she changed how she played me from Wimbledon
06:05to now. So yeah I think for me it was just all on my end of the court
06:11obviously she's a great player and as a person she's super nice girl. I've got to
06:16know her over the Olympics and she's super funny. She's kind of the opposite
06:20of how she is on court. She has a lot of personality but she doesn't show it as
06:24much to you guys but yeah she's super nice and I always root for her and yeah
06:29it was a battle today but you know if you want if you had to lose it's you
06:34know rather lose to a good person off the court you know.
06:36Okay Darcy and then last question is Cindy. Darcy. Darcy Mann from ESPN.com. Other players have talked about the
06:43fatigue and they felt after this summer particularly with the Olympics and
06:47their energy levels maybe not being quite where they normally would this
06:51time of year. Is that something you felt coming to New York? No I think I don't
06:58know it's a tough question because I feel like I felt ready and I felt like
07:03physically and mentally ready but for sure I think in Toronto and Cincy it was
07:07a little bit mentally draining those tournaments having to switch surfaces
07:11and it's tough when you're trying to find your game and you know you you're
07:16just used to just maybe a certain type of year but coming into this I hadn't
07:20I didn't feel any exhaustion I was actually really excited to play and yeah
07:25I didn't feel any type of things I was just ready to go on court even today I
07:29felt ready to go on court I was excited so yeah but I mean if that's something
07:35you have to deal with every four years so it's not that big of a deal and every
07:39Olympics I can qualify for and I'm healthy I'm definitely gonna play so I
07:43don't blame it on that. Cindy last question please. Hi Coco. Cindy Schmurler from the New York Times.
07:48Marina Zabalenka when she was struggling with her serve hired a mechanics coach to
07:53help her deal with it and restructure her serve is that something you would
07:56consider? Yeah I mean for sure yeah I definitely want to look you know get
08:02other opinions because you know and also I think it's sometimes more of an
08:06emotional mental thing because if I go out on the practice court right now I'll
08:10make like 30 serves in a row I've done it before so I think it's also just my
08:14kind of a mental hurdle that I have to get over when it comes with that but
08:17yeah I definitely want to look at other things because I don't want to lose
08:22matches like this anymore.
