00:00Netflix has been a part of our lives for 12 years now, at least here in the UK anyways,
00:04which is kind of mind-boggling because that means that the London 2012 Olympics were that long ago
00:09as well, which, well, time flies. But, after so long on the market, how does Netflix hold up in
00:152024? Well, I've got my full review in the story below, but I'm just going to quickly take you
00:22through a few things that I like and a few things that I don't and whether I think it's worth it.
00:26Well, one thing that I like is I really like the quality of the hidden gems they've got.
00:31You may have to root around a bit like a truffle pig, but you're going to find something amazing
00:35there. Or something really terrible, but really enjoyable. I really enjoy watching terrible things
00:39as well. Like, not everything has to be gold-plated amazing. Netflix games is amazing.
00:45I honestly, why am I not shouting from the rooftop about this? The range of stuff on Netflix,
00:50whether it's documentaries, their original shows, the shows from around the world,
00:56you can watch a Polish comedy, then you can swap over Stranger Things, then you can watch
01:02the latest fluffy American take on the Great British Bake Off. Yeah, you've just got everything
01:08there. I've rolled a few things into one there of likes, but yeah. And then I've been really
01:13impressed recently with their anime library. It's really grown in quality. It's got some
01:18real classics of the genre. Neon Genesis, obviously a big one. Studio Ghibli films,
01:23obviously, as well. But then quite a lot of modern stuff, which is really good for catching
01:27up and not having to subscribe to yet another streaming service. But now it's time for the
01:33negatives. Well, my main negative, which is one I've had for, I think, a decade now,
01:38is I really don't like the interface of the app. I don't like how it's designed. I don't like the
01:42carousels. I find that they're often just full of the same things. Even if it's like thriller,
01:48psychological, horror, it's often quite pretty much the same things, which means that you have
01:55to root around for the hidden gems, whereas perhaps there's a way that they could have it
01:59so that that stuff was easier to find. I don't like that their shows don't release weekly like
02:05other streaming services do. I think the binging model was amazing at first, but I think shows need
02:12to come out weekly to build audience and give them time, which then feeds into another thing
02:16I don't like. I don't like how trigger happy they are. It's a running meme now, isn't it,
02:21that shows get cancelled after two years or two seasons at least. It's probably four years with
02:26how long TV shows take now, but they don't get the time to end on their own terms, which means
02:32I find myself reticent to starting new shows because they're just going to get cancelled
02:36anyway. So then they get cancelled because no one watches them. And yeah, a bit of a
02:41self-fulfilling prophecy there. And then finally, I don't like how the rollout of the password
02:46crackdown was handled. I lost my personal Netflix account that I'd had for, what, 11 years,
02:5212 years, whenever it was. And yeah, that was tied to a virgin box and you couldn't add the extra
03:00members through that. It was really complicated and it wasn't well organised. And I had to start
03:05a new account and lost all my years and years and years of data and my list and everything.
03:11And I still think this shows that I was mid-binged that I haven't caught up on,
03:15but I just can't remember. But do I think it's worth it? Maybe, yeah. If you can afford it,
03:21I think it is. If you enjoy watching movies and shows from around the world, if you're really
03:27into Korean dramas, it's really worth it. If you're not watching that often, I don't know,
03:33it's up to you. There is the cheaper ad-free, the ad-supporting model, not ad-free, the cheaper
03:38ad-supporting model, which may ease the price a bit for you. But I think it just depends what
03:45you're looking for. On the whole, yeah, I'd recommend it, but with caveats.
