Sheffield retro: Fascinating photos show Sheffield as few remember it between the wars
Transcript
00:00These fascinating photos show a very different looking Sheffield as few people will remember the city.
00:07They were all taken between 1920 and 1939, during the interwar years, and capture a lost world of cobbled streets and gas lighting.
00:17These retro images depict a time of great upheaval in Sheffield, with many of the old back-to-back houses being torn down to make way for more modern buildings.
00:27It was a period when Sheffield, like the rest of Britain, was still recovering from the devastation of the Great War as it was then known,
00:34and had little idea of the fresh horrors which lay ahead, including the Sheffield Blitz, which would destroy large parts of the city.
00:42The locations shown include Fargate, Division Street and Cambridge Street in the city centre, as well as Bramall Lane, Netherthorpe, Neepsend and Park.
00:52Several lost pubs and a number of old shops can be seen in the nostalgic images, harking back to a very different era and a lost way of life.
01:02All the photos are shared courtesy of Picture Sheffield.
