Genomic selection is being used to develop more efficient breeding systems for macadamia nuts.

00:00With the genomic selection, what's happening is we're actually using predictions from the DNA of the plants
00:07to predict what the important characteristics such as nut and shell yield and tree size and kernel recovery are.
00:14And this is the first time we've actually used it in the breeding program in a practical sense with this orchard here.
00:23The idea here is that we will only have the trees in the ground for five years.
00:29And we will make our selections within that five year period and the elites will clonally propagate it
00:35and send out to growers for testing at different locations.
00:39With this method of the genomic selection and genomic prediction of the elites,
00:45we're anticipating that eventually we'll be able to do this in virtually half the time to about 12 years.
