The Herricanes Movie Trailer HD - Plot synopsis: The Houston Herricanes were a part of the first women's full tackle football league in the 1970s. Their unknown story is one of commitment, courage, and strength. Despite adversity and hardship, they fielded a team purely for the love of the game. What they started is a movement that is still in motion today.
The Herricanes received minimal support from the public during the 4 years they played. They were teased and joked at both in their personal lives and in the stadiums in which they played. But every bit of the support they lacked from the community, they found in each other. These groundbreaking ladies from all different walks of life came to the field with little to no experience but together they made history, even if it hasn't been told yet.
Today women's football still faces many of the same struggles endured by the Herricanes 40 years ago. Thanks to Title IX, the number of girls and women participating in sports has grown exponentially since 1972. However, as the number one sport in America, football is still only visibly played by men and remains the final frontier for women in sports.

00:00I'm talking to a guy, he's like, do you play sports?
00:09Yeah.
00:10I play football.
00:11He's like, football?
00:14People don't like the idea of women hitting each other at a million miles an hour.
00:18As women, it's like, why wouldn't we want to play America's game?
00:21Did you know that there was a women's football league in the 1970s?
00:25No, I did not know that.
00:27Take one, Mark.
00:29This is my mom, Basha.
00:31She played full tackle football on a team called the Houston Hurricanes.
00:37As a kid, I genuinely believed that everyone's mom played football.
00:41I now know that to be untrue.
00:43The league was started by a talent agent.
00:45He thought that maybe the women would play in skirts, but the women showed up and they
00:49were like, well, he plays an ad for football, we want to play football.
00:53Football coaches are writing letters to President Ford that say, dear Mr. President, please
00:57don't destroy the sport that we know you love.
01:01There was actually a sign on the door of my high school gym.
01:05No girls allowed.
01:06Why can't we go in there?
01:07We need to be strong too.
01:08If this is the space that we're not supposed to play, when we do this, we can shift culture.
01:18You were all fighting for a common goal, and that was the right to play football.
01:22I can literally say that football saved my life.
01:27It was just like a family.
01:29I wanted to play football.
01:31There were other women who wanted to do the same thing, and together, what could we accomplish?
01:36You know, my goodness, what might we accomplish if we do this?
01:41Do not go where the path may lead.
01:43Go instead where there is no path and make a trail.
