00:00A Brazilian Supreme Court justice has ordered the suspension of Elon Musk's social media
00:04platform X Nationwide, escalating a feud between the two men over freedom of speech, far-right
00:11accounts and misinformation.
00:13Justice Alexandre de Moraes warned Musk on Wednesday night that failure to name a local
00:18legal representative could mean that his platform was blocked.
00:23The company hasn't had a representative since earlier this month.
00:26De Moraes is basing his decision on local law requiring foreign companies to have a
00:31representative in order to receive notification of court decisions and also to take any requisite
00:36legal action.
00:38De Moraes' defenders have said that his decisions targeting X have been lawful and that they've
00:43served to protect democracy.
00:45Musk, on the other hand, has characterized de Moraes as an authoritarian censor and his
00:50claims have been amplified by Brazil's political right.
00:54Brazil is an important market for X with tens of millions of regular users and also
00:58a potentially huge growth market for Elon Musk's satellite company Starlink.
01:04And now Starlink is also in de Moraes' crosshairs.
01:07It's said that this week the judge froze its accounts apparently in an attempt to get it
01:13to pay for X's fines.
