00:00Weighing up to 400 kilos and measuring up to three meters long, an adult grey seal is
00:09a cumbersome beast on land.
00:12But once these large animals slip into the water, it's a completely different story.
00:20Time to grab my diving gear and go join them.
00:28I've got some grey seals, I'm about to get in the water with them.
00:31They've got a reputation for being pretty friendly, so hopefully I'll be making some
00:36new acquaintances today.
00:44And as soon as we're in, we start attracting attention.
00:48Yeah boy, that's a grey seal, incredible swimmers, bang, shooting pass, I've got all this kid
01:00on, I'm big, I'm clumsy, but these guys, they're like ballerinas, they're so good at it.
01:08These expert swimmers are highly manoeuvrable and can dive down to 475 meters, staying submerged
01:17hunting for nearly 60 minutes, where their speed and agility allows them to catch the
01:26fastest of fish and squid.
01:32But it's not just swimming that they excel at.
01:35You can see all their adaptations in the water, those big eyes, allowing them to see through
01:41the murk, that sleek pelt, keeps them warm, streamlines them along with their blubber,
01:49and of course those powerful back fins for swimming.
01:55I've just been attacked by a seal.
02:01Today visibility is pretty good down here.
02:04We're getting some great shots, but it's not always like this.
02:09Winter storms soon turn the water murky, and as the days get shorter, there's less light
02:16to hunt by.
02:17But even in virtually zero visibility, these guys rarely go hungry.
