00:00Little Marie has a new house and a new playmate.
00:10This is fun.
00:12Him's right there.
00:14But when her parents realize her friend is not flesh and blood...
00:19Oh my gosh, Marie, where did you get that boo-boo?
00:22She says, Mommy, he grabbed me.
00:24Playtime is over.
00:26How do I protect her?
00:27Someone's in Marie's room!
00:29How do I save her?
00:31Marie!
00:33You've got to get me in that room!
00:35There's something in front of the door!
00:37There's nothing going to stop me from getting in that room.
00:39Nothing or no one.
00:41Marie! Marie!
00:45In America, there is real evil.
00:50It lurks in the darkest shadows and in our most ordinary towns.
00:57Between the worlds we see...
00:59Someone's in my room.
01:01And the things we fear...
01:04There are doors.
01:06When they are opened...
01:09Nightmares become reality.
01:28In 2010, the Barber family,
01:31Olivia, Jesse, and five-year-old daughter Marie,
01:34move out of Olivia's parents' house and into their own home.
01:38Our house was a cute little ranch-style house.
01:40It was perfect for us just starting our family.
01:43Little, tiny, comfortable, and cozy.
01:51We were both excited about this new house.
01:53These the ones you're looking for?
01:55Yep, those are them.
01:57She's so little.
01:59It was our own. It was going to be ours.
02:01It was all for us.
02:03To grow as a family.
02:05I believe this is yours, young lady.
02:07I almost tripped on it in the stairway.
02:09Thanks, Daddy.
02:11Mommy, can I go outside to play?
02:13Marie is a very active child.
02:17She's very fun-loving.
02:19Sure, but just stay where I can see you.
02:21I'll be out there in a few minutes.
02:24Okay, kiddo, get Daddy a kiss. I've got to go to work.
02:26Even though she's only five,
02:28I've noticed with her going to school now,
02:30she makes friends fairly easy.
02:32Just an outgoing kid.
02:34Jesse is my childhood sweetheart.
02:36I knew he was just going to turn out to be
02:38this fantastic provider, husband, father, friend.
02:45What about me?
02:47You're going off to work without even a goodbye?
02:49She's my whole everything.
02:53Get out of here.
03:04The town of Elkton sits on the Chesapeake Bay,
03:07an hour drive from both Baltimore and Philadelphia.
03:11Elkton is a very small town.
03:13Pretty much everybody knows everybody.
03:16It has that almost like a rustic charm to it.
03:20We thought it was a safe neighborhood.
03:22We thought it was going to be a great place to start our family.
03:25Having our daughter grow up here,
03:27all her memories were going to be here.
03:29She was going to have friends here.
03:31She was going to go to school here.
03:33We thought it was going to be forever.
03:38Marie loved to play outside in the backyard.
03:41She had a driveway she could ride her bike on.
03:44She had a swing set.
03:46As long as she was outside, she was happy.
03:51And the backyard proves to be the perfect playground
03:54for neighborhood kids.
04:00I can't reach my pinkies.
04:02Like this. Pop!
04:05I'm ready!
04:06This is fun.
04:08There was one day Marie was playing.
04:10I went to go check on her.
04:11My second favorite color is green.
04:13She was having a conversation.
04:21Hey, sweetie.
04:23Who are you talking to?
04:25My friend Jackson.
04:27Jackson, huh?
04:29Where's Jackson from?
04:31He lives here.
04:32Oh, in the neighborhood. Well, that's nice.
04:35In that moment, I was really starting to get excited.
04:40She was playing with the neighborhood kids
04:43because she was adjusting.
04:45You know, next time he comes to play, I'd like to meet him.
04:48Come on. Let's go get some lunch.
05:12To the Barbers, the neighborhood is finally starting to feel like home.
05:16Until a few nights later.
05:46When I woke up, I was scared to death.
05:49I couldn't fathom somebody beating on somebody's wall,
05:54you know, in the middle of the night.
05:56It sounded like somebody's hand was hitting the side of the house.
06:02What?
06:03What's going on?
06:05Did you hear that banging on the wall?
06:07What banging?
06:09Something banged on the wall.
06:11Did you hear that banging on the wall?
06:13What banging?
06:15Something banged on the wall.
06:17I was still kind of groggy because I was woken from a dead sleep.
06:20It took me a few seconds to register what she was trying to tell me.
06:23She was hearing banging.
06:26Honey, maybe it's just some kids playing ball outside.
06:36It's okay. All right?
06:39It's okay.
06:42I'll go take a look around.
06:57I went into protective mode.
07:00I've checked room after room.
07:09I've checked room after room.
07:30There was nobody outside. There was nobody in the house.
07:33I couldn't come up with anything.
07:36I couldn't find anybody.
07:39Okay.
08:06Olivia Barber is thrilled.
08:09Her five-year-old daughter Marie has made her first friend in their new neighborhood.
08:14It was fun.
08:16Who were you talking to?
08:18My friend Jackson.
08:21When Marie first started talking about Jackson, it was how awesome he was.
08:27How he wanted to do something.
08:29When Marie first started talking about Jackson, it was how awesome he was.
08:35How he wanted to play.
08:37He liked doing things that she liked to do.
08:52There was one day Marie was playing. I went to go check on her.
08:59I don't want to play.
09:07Is it silly?
09:12Marie, when I walked in, she was having a conversation.
09:16Hi.
09:17Hey, Mom.
09:22Hey, baby. Who are you talking to?
09:25My friend Jackson.
09:27The boy you were playing with the other day outside?
09:30Yes.
09:31Suddenly, Olivia realizes Jackson may not be real.
09:36I'm like, oh, you have an imaginary friend.
09:40And she says, no, Mama. Him's real.
09:43Him's right there.
09:46Right there. Don't you see?
09:50There was nobody there but me and her.
09:54I had a feeling that something just wasn't right.
10:03Okay.
10:11Mommy will be just down the hall.
10:18I'll save you.
10:23Okay.
10:34That was my mom.
10:40Roll it back, silly.
10:54So it looks like we're going back next week to do another building.
11:04Something weird happened today.
11:07I found Marie talking to someone.
11:10She said it's her new friend.
11:13It's like a full conversation.
11:18No one was there.
11:24My opinion was she's a kid.
11:27She's the only child in the house right now.
11:33Maybe it was just an imaginary friend.
11:36Just somebody to play with?
11:38I don't know.
11:44It felt weird.
11:47Honey, you're overreacting.
11:51You're overreacting.
11:54I actually was thinking it's a good thing that she has an imagination.
11:58It just means that there's a creative side to her personality.
12:02She's adjusting.
12:07So I decided, don't worry. Give it some time. It'll be okay.
12:14You win.
12:17I was kind of hoping that as she got older,
12:20the whole Jackson thing would just kind of fade away.
12:47Oh.
12:49Mommy, I can't sleep.
12:53It's okay, sweetie.
12:55Do you have a bad dream?
12:57Come here.
13:00She was playing in her bedroom at least during the day,
13:03but at night Marie wanted no part of her bedroom.
13:07She didn't want to sleep in there.
13:09She had to be where Mommy and Daddy were.
13:11I want to stay with you.
13:13I want to stay with you, Mommy.
13:16Oh.
13:18It's going to be okay, okay, sweetie?
13:22The Barbers come up with a solution,
13:24setting up Marie's old baby monitor in her bedroom.
13:27We put her baby monitor back in her room
13:30because we thought it was going to be a comforting tool for her.

13:53♪♪♪
14:03♪♪♪
14:13♪♪♪
14:23♪♪♪
14:33♪♪♪
14:44For weeks, five-year-old Marie
14:46has been having trouble sleeping in her new house.
14:51♪♪♪
14:59♪♪♪
15:04I really thought there was someone in my house.
15:07I was literally terrified.
15:10♪♪♪
15:18Sound asleep.
15:20Walked in her room, she was sound asleep.
15:22I mean, nobody in there.
15:24Quiet.
15:26Check the closet.
15:28Okay.
15:30♪♪♪
15:40♪♪♪
15:46Are you sure you heard something?
15:48♪♪♪
15:52I know what I heard.
15:55There's something in this room.
15:57♪♪♪
16:00It was kind of deep and kind of gravelly.
16:03♪♪♪
16:05But I could definitely tell
16:07it was a man's voice coming through the monitor.
16:10♪♪♪
16:13Maybe it was a malfunction or something.
16:15I kept trying to come up with reasoning for it.
16:18There's got to be an explanation.
16:20Come on. Let's go to bed.
16:23Jesse said, baby, I told you there's nobody in here.
16:26Everything is okay.
16:29Fine.
16:31Come on, baby.
16:33Shh. Mommy's here. Mommy's here.
16:36That's right. Come on, baby.
16:38That's right.
16:40Marie is sleeping with us.
16:42♪♪♪♪
16:45♪♪♪♪
16:48♪♪♪♪
16:51♪♪♪♪
16:54♪♪♪♪

17:05Olivia tries to convince herself
17:07that this has all been a figment of her imagination.
17:10He was going to tell me I was just being crazy.
17:12We just moved in, and I just needed to adjust.
17:16I felt alone,
17:18and I had the feeling that something's not right here.
17:24It was really getting to the point
17:26that I did not want to live there anymore.
17:28I was petrified.
17:30♪♪♪♪♪
17:34Do you want the crust cut off?
17:36Yes, please.
17:38♪♪♪♪♪
17:42Just the way you like it.
17:44♪♪♪♪♪
17:47Mm-hmm.
17:49♪♪♪♪♪
17:54Oh, my gosh, Marie.
17:56Where did you get that boo-boo?
17:58I don't know.
18:00Marie had bruises that were not there
18:03when I gave her a bath the night before.
18:06I don't know where these bruises are coming from.
18:09You know, I'm getting scared.
18:13I started asking her,
18:15Marie, did you fall down?
18:17Did you walk into something?
18:19Did somebody hit you?
18:20She would say, no, I didn't fall,
18:22or no, I didn't walk into anything,
18:24but she wouldn't tell me if somebody was hitting her.
18:27Honey, these bruises have to come from somewhere,
18:30and Mommy needs to know.
18:32I don't know.
18:34She was actually getting to the point
18:36that she was getting mad at me.
18:38I was terrified for Marie.
18:42I didn't know how to protect her.
18:44I didn't know how to keep her from getting hurt.
18:50Well, honey, you know you can tell Mommy anything, okay?
18:58Let me go get you some juice.
19:04Come on.
19:35♪♪♪♪
19:56Marie?
19:59Marie?
20:02Where are you?
20:05Marie?
20:08Marie?
20:10Marie?
20:12I was starting to panic.
20:14Marie?
20:16I was getting ready to go into a panic attack.
20:18Marie?
20:20Marie?
20:23Marie?
20:26Marie?
20:31♪♪♪♪♪
20:35Marie?
20:37Marie?
20:39Marie?
20:42Marie, I was worried.
20:44Honey, don't ever run off like that again.
20:46I didn't run off, Mommy.
20:48I'm playing with Jackson.
20:50Jackson?
20:52Where's Jackson?
20:54He's over there, Mommy.
20:57She says, right there.
20:59He's right there, don't you see?
21:01Honey.
21:04He says I have to go with him.
21:06Go where?
21:10Up there.
21:12To heaven.
21:21For months, little Marie has been playing with an imaginary friend named Jackson.
21:30He's over there, Mommy.
21:33It's been all fun and games.
21:35Until now.
21:37He says I have to go with him.
21:39Go where?
21:41Where, Marie? Where does Jackson want to take you?
21:46Up there.
21:48To heaven.
21:55I was horrified.
21:58Because to me, it sounded like my child just told me she wanted to die.
22:04Marie, you are not to play with Jackson anymore.
22:09No.
22:11No more.
22:13I pretty much told her, this is it.
22:15This friendship is done.
22:17I don't want you talking to him.
22:19I don't want you going anywhere with him.
22:21I don't want him around anymore.
22:24Come on.
22:29Not knowing what to do, Olivia anxiously waits for her husband to come home from work.
22:35Oh my God, Jesse.
22:37What's wrong?
22:38Marie disappeared today.
22:40I found her outside playing with Jackson.
22:44He said...
22:50She said he wants to take her to heaven.
22:54I don't know what's going on here, honey, but I'm really scared.
22:59You're going to think I'm crazy, but...
23:03I think Jackson is a ghost.
23:08There's someone, there's something in this house.
23:13I was kind of beside myself, I didn't know what to think.
23:16I tried to calm her down about it.
23:18Tried to reason with her to tell her it's a kid being a kid.
23:22Honey, you know she'll outgrow this Jackson thing.
23:26It's just a phase.
23:28It's not a phase, Jesse.
23:30I felt it too.
23:34I think the house is haunted.
23:43It's okay.
23:46Let's go inside.
23:47Let's go talk about this.
23:50Okay.
24:04For the next few days, the stress level in the house is at an all-time high.
24:12At this point, Jesse and I are hardly even talking.
24:15He'd come home from work, I'd say dinner's done, he'd say okay.
24:18And that, unless we were talking about Marie,
24:21that was pretty much the extent of the conversation.
24:24Our house felt gloomy, it felt unwelcoming,
24:27and it just felt like it was sucking life right out of us.
24:34She was really stressed.
24:36I was always tired.
24:40So it put a stress on us as a couple.
24:45It's frustrating.
24:48I didn't want to lose my wife or my daughter over this.
25:06Hey, Jesse.
25:07Hey, Sam.
25:10Hey, Sam.
25:14How long have you lived here?
25:15Over 20 years.
25:17I talked to a few of the neighbors that had been living in the neighborhood for quite a while
25:21to find out maybe they could tell me something about people that may have lived there.
25:25Anything strange ever happen in this house?
25:30No.
25:31Some crazy old guy lived there.
25:33He lived like a hermit.
25:35He never talked to anyone.
25:37Hated all the neighbors, especially the kids.
25:40He kept to himself.
25:42In fact, I don't even think he had a wife or anything there.
25:45He did his yard work, and that would be the extent of seeing him.
25:49Whatever happened to him?
25:51I don't know.
25:53One day, we didn't see him anymore, so we just thought he died.
25:58The house was up for sale.
26:00Some investors bought it, and they started leasing it out.
26:08Why, is something strange going on?
26:11No, just getting used to the house.
26:15It's strange.
26:32Although Jesse doesn't believe the old man is haunting his home,
26:36he decides to keep what he's heard to himself.
26:39I didn't want to tell Olivia, because she was already under a lot of stress with the situation.
26:45I didn't want to add more to it.
26:47There was no real reason for me to say anything about it.
27:03Mommy says you can't be in here anymore.
27:09Go away.
27:12Go away!
27:14Mommy!
27:36Oh my God! It's Marie! It's Marie!
27:39What's going on?
27:41Marie!
27:43Marie!
27:52An entity inside the barber home is playing dangerous tricks on five-year-old Marie.
28:06Go away!
28:09Oh my God! It's Marie! It's Marie!
28:13What's going on?
28:15Marie!
28:17Marie!
28:19Move! Move!
28:21Marie! Marie!
28:23Marie! Marie!
28:25The door's locked! The door's locked!
28:28Marie, we're coming for you, Marie!
28:30Marie!
28:32Listening to her scream like somebody's trying to kill her and not being able to get in,
28:38that is like every worst fear and nightmare a parent has.
28:42How do I save her? How do I protect her?
28:45Marie! I see you, baby!
28:48The look on the baby's face. I'll never forget it.
28:51Get me in there! You gotta get me in there!
28:53There's something in front of the door!
28:55There's something blocking the door!
28:57There was nothing going to stop me from getting in that room. Nothing or no one.
29:00Watch, Jackie!
29:04Mommy!
29:06Oh, baby girl.
29:13It's okay, baby. We're here right now, okay?
29:17Jessie, look.
29:20Lean your head back, baby.
29:23When I seen the marks on her neck, I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
29:28They were large. I mean, you can obviously tell that it was hands.
29:32Marie? Marie, honey? What happened?
29:36Jackson tried to choke me.
29:40She says, Mommy, he grabbed me and he pulled me to the floor by my throat.
29:45She said him was trying to choke me because I told him I didn't want him here anymore.
29:52Jesus.
29:55That was the most terrifying, upsetting experience I've ever had in my life.
30:06Somebody.
30:08In that moment, there was no doubt in my mind that Jackson was something in that house that was very dangerous.
30:17The windows are locked. There's no way anyone could have gotten in.
30:22There's no way Marie could have moved that heavy dresser.
30:25After what all of it had been trying to tell me, the reality just sunk in that this was happening.
30:32You coward!
30:34I lost my mind. I totally lost my mind. It exploded.
30:37Pick it on a tiny child!
30:40I cussed him. I called him all kinds of names.
30:44You want to choke someone? Choke me!
30:48I was trying so hard to get him to leave her alone.
30:51Jackson, calm down.
30:54You stay out of this! I'll handle this!
30:57Knowing that I can't protect her, I can't fight off what's there, I feel powerless.
31:07I feel powerless. It makes me almost feel worthless.
31:11Shh. Shh, baby girl.
31:20I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
31:37The family reaches out to the Dover Paranormal Research Team.
31:42We need to find somebody to come and help. We've got to do something about it.
31:49It stops now.
31:53Our goal is to try to provide as much help as we can as quickly as we can.
31:58Thank you for coming so quickly.
32:02I could tell she was very upset. She was very anxious.
32:08Donna's going to walk through the house to see if she senses anything or picks up any impressions.
32:16I just kind of looked at Tom for a minute and I'm like, he honestly believes me.
32:21Maybe I'm not going crazy like I thought I was.
32:25Why don't we sit and chat while Donna does her work?
32:28I'd like to hear more about what you're experiencing.
32:35Being a third generation Wiccan means that my grandmother was Wiccan, my mother was Wiccan, and I'm Wiccan.
32:42We believe that everything has a soul and a right to live, and that nothing should be killed unless it's for food,
32:49and you should always give something back to the earth.
32:53When I walk into a home and there is a spirit there, I feel a humming.
32:59I can't really explain it. It's like a pressure almost.
33:05It is a very intense feeling, and it just builds as I get closer to where the spirit is.
33:12And that's kind of the feelings that I got as I got closer to Maria's room.
33:23Maria's Room
33:34At first, Donna sees an innocent little boy.
33:38As soon as I saw him, I knew that it was Jackson, the spirit that Maria had seen.
33:45But then, the ghost reveals his true identity.
33:52The Ghost
33:59I knew that he was very strong, and I felt that he was very angry.
34:04Think you can step on my land? Get off of my land! Get out of my house! Get out of my house! This is my house! This is my house!
34:20For more on haunting, visit DestinationAmerica.com
34:35A spiritual investigator has seen the ghost haunting the barber home.
34:41It's the spirit of a bitter old man who used to live in a house and despises kids.
34:49Good for nothing children!
34:51He was in the corner of Maria's room, and he was very angry.
34:57Get out of my house!
35:02She fears five-year-old Maria is in danger.
35:09Maria's family still thinks Jackson is a young child, but the truth is even more shocking.
35:16There's a spirit of a man in your house.
35:21You mean a little boy?
35:24No, it's a man.
35:28He's older and very unhappy.
35:32He's very angry. He doesn't want you here.
35:38To be told that this is not a child terrorizing another child, this is a full-grown man terrorizing my daughter.
35:48My heart just felt like it broke all over again. I was petrified.
35:53But why is this ghost disguising himself? And what are his true intentions with Maria and her parents?
36:01A spirit can present themselves in many ways, especially to children.
36:05And he did present himself as a friend, because that would be someone that she would trust.
36:12I believe that Jackson actually lived in the home. I believe that he was a loner.
36:18I don't think he had a close relationship with anyone. I think he was angry in life and angry in death.
36:26So why would he be drawn to Maria? Because she could see him. And I believe that he wanted to use that.
36:35When Maria pulled away from him, it made him very angry.
36:42They have a loving family, and that angered him, because he didn't have that in life.
36:48He truly did not want them there.
36:51He hurt her.
36:55His fear made him stronger.
36:58He doesn't want you here. This attack on Maria is very serious.
37:02Jackson was trying to disguise himself as a young boy to make friends with her,
37:09so he could carry out whatever dastardly deeds he felt he wanted to do.
37:16We need to get rid of him. Now. He needs to be gone from this house.
37:22Tom, I think we need to do a cleansing.
37:32Donna instructs the family to stick together during the cleansing no matter what.
37:38Donna's going to come in and she'll give us instructions as to what we're going to be doing, okay?
37:43Okay. And she's been through this many times before, so you don't have to be worried.
37:47Okay, Marie.
37:49For Marie, she prepares a special Wiccan spray,
37:53using spices and holy water to serve as a weapon against the ghost who attacked her.
37:58Take this spray, and whenever you feel scared, you spray it.
38:02And in your heart, you tell Jackson to go away.
38:07And this is a prayer that we'll be saying during this ceremony.
38:11And Tom is going to light the sage. It's very powerful for clearing negative entities from a space.
38:18All right, if you'll say it with me.
38:21Divine goddess, goddess divine. Divine god, god divine.
38:28If evil dwells within this space, make it leave this place.
38:34This is my house.
38:36Keep going. Divine goddess, goddess divine.
38:41Get out of my house.
38:43Divine god, god divine.
38:46If evil dwells within this space, make it leave this place.
38:51Marie, you have to tell Jackson to leave.
38:55She was scared. I mean, she was very scared.
39:00You can do this.
39:02Tell Jackson to go away.
39:05Spray it at him.
39:07Good girl. Tell him to go away.
39:10Go away.
39:12Again.
39:14Go away.
39:16When I'm doing a cleansing, it's very intense.
39:20My sole purpose is to drive him out of that room.
39:24And Jackson did not want to leave that room.
39:27And Jackson did not want to leave that room.
39:30Divine goddess, goddess divine. Divine god, god divine.
39:37If evil dwells within this space, make it leave this place.
39:42So help me.
39:53He's gone.
39:54It's over. He's moved on.
40:00When she was finished, I feel like this big, huge, dark cloud
40:05has just been lifted from our home. It was amazing.
40:09Then I looked at Jesse and I said, it's going to be okay now.
40:14I was empowered again.
40:17Being the dad, the protector, it gave me that back.
40:22Back.
40:31What do you have there?
40:34Six pieces.
40:36You're doing so good.
40:39To see our little girl go back to the way she was before,
40:43that was the best feeling, the absolute best feeling ever.
40:47I'm needing this piece right here, but I can't seem to find it.
40:50Right there. It's right where?
40:53Where?
40:55Is daddy hiding a piece from me? Give me this piece.
40:58Me and Olivia, the history we've had, all the stuff we've been thrown at,
41:03this is just another stepping stone. It's made us that much more stronger,
41:07much more connected with one another.
41:10I have always believed in the paranormal.
41:13Growing up, my belief was they're all about fun and games.
41:18They're not going to hurt you.
41:20Daddy.
41:22Hey, this is my favorite toy.
41:24I never dreamed that they could hurt you.
41:27Now, I have a whole other outlook on it.
41:32If you are miserable in this life, you're going to be miserable in the afterlife.
41:36There are ones out there that could probably kill you.
41:41It's done. It's over. It's behind us.
41:44And I don't ever want to experience it again.
