00:00Hi, I'm Alex from NME and today I'm joined by two spooky but very friendly cast members
00:14of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. It's General Taggart and Catherine O'Hara.
00:17Hello, how are we doing?
00:19I saw the film last night, it's great, but my favourite part was the great big song and
00:24dance scene at the end. Who's having the ideas for those moves?
00:28Both of us.
00:29We had a choreographer, but he let us kind of run wild.
00:33You were the inspiration behind the performance art aspect of it. I think it read on the page
00:40as a proper dance and you sparked an idea.
00:43I wanted improper. I wanted the more, it was illogical to my mind, dance moves that kind
00:50of mean nothing in modern. Not all modern dance, modern dance is amazing.
00:54We were in a tent right off set, just, oh my god, it's funny when you do that.
00:58I think right away you lay down on the floor and did this kind of thing. We went for it.
01:03So obviously you're both in a Beetlejuice film, two for you Catherine now. But have
01:08you ever drunk juice made from beetles?
01:11I would hope not.
01:12Why would you?
01:13And if I did, it may have been an accident.
01:15See this is what I thought, but I was doing some research and after a bit of reading on
01:20the internet, I think we all might have drunk juice made from beetles, because...
01:24Which kind?
01:25I'll tell you.
01:26Are they peeing in drinks or something?
01:28One of the most widely used red food colourings, carmine, is made from crushed up bugs. The
01:34bugs are called cochineal and they're native to Latin America, where they live on cacti.
01:40And they're a staple of the global food industry. And they're added to everything from yogurts,
01:44ice creams, fruit pies, cupcakes, donuts and soft drinks.
01:48No!
01:49I know, I didn't realise this. I've got a picture, do you want to see?
01:52Yeah.
01:53So that's what we've been drinking.
01:55You said it was red?
01:57Yeah, I think when they're crushed up they go red.
02:00Oh, that's awful.
02:01That is awful. You know what's crazy though? I am allergic to a certain type of red food dye,
02:07so I don't really eat red food dye things, so I think I might be safe.
02:12So you might be allergic to beetle juice, despite being in...
02:16You've never had cranberry juice? Pomegranate juice?
02:18Oh, don't do that.
02:19Yeah, never heard of Cosmo?
02:20Yeah, but cranberries are red.
02:22Cranberries are red, not everything is... He said red food dye.
02:25But they might have added some dye.
02:27I choose my own reality.
02:31Oh, who said you could do that?
02:39When you're all driving carpool and banging your Pilates instructors to fill the empty voids in your life,
02:44we'll see who gets the last laugh.
02:46Now Jenna, at NME we've been writing a lot of stuff about your music video with Sabrina Carpenter,
02:51but do you know that Katherine has also been in a music video with some very famous people?
02:57Do you know what I'm talking about, Katherine?
03:00No.
03:01Yes.
03:02It was quite famous at the time, I think.
03:04Canadian thing?
03:05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:06Yeah, you didn't hear that, did you?
03:08I might as well have done this.
03:10You mean the...
03:12So it was this... Katherine, why didn't you explain to Jenna about it?
03:15It was the Canadian version of We Are The World.
03:18Oh, no.
03:20Yeah, how have you... Oh, because you're in music.
03:22Yeah, so it's...
03:23Oh, that's so hilarious.
03:24It's this 1985 charity single, which is a bit like...
03:27Come on, Corey Hart.
03:28Who else was in it?
03:30Neil Young.
03:31Oh, really?
03:32Yeah, Brian Adams.
03:33He was much cooler than I thought.
03:34Joni Mitchell.
03:35Okay, what was I doing?
03:36And you're singing on this as well.
03:37I know.
03:38What was I doing?
03:39So that's so cool.
03:40You just downplayed it heavily, that's so cool.
03:42That's really cool.
03:44I'm cooler than I thought.
03:46Sorry?
03:47Joni Mitchell, yeah.
03:48Yeah.
03:49Wow.
03:50So I've got a picture of it.
03:51I mean, it's so hard to find a picture.
03:53Oh, no, let's see it.
03:54Can you find yourself?
03:55I love your references.
03:56Can you find us?
03:57I see Joni instantly.
03:58My eye just went...
03:59You go to Joni first.
04:00Oh, there you are.
04:01Wait, your cover...
04:02I'm way back somewhere.
04:03Too back from Joni, I think.
04:05Really?
04:06Yeah, I found you before you found yourself.
04:08Well, I've got glasses on, so I don't know.
04:10She's right there.
04:11Half her face is covered.
04:12Half her face is covered.
04:13I don't recognize you.
04:14Glasses in it, glasses in it.
04:15What was it like being in a recording studio?
04:17It was really cool.
04:18Is that Ronnie Spector?
04:19I know.
04:20Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:21I think I was just really nervous.
04:22That's why I don't even remember who was there.
04:24That's so cool.
04:25Because it was just...
04:26What am I doing here?
04:27You couldn't see behind that hair.
04:29Really.
04:30My friend Robin's in there, and I'd point her out if I could see.
04:34And we met in the first year of high school,
04:37and then she became an actress, I became an actress.
04:40She did Saturday Night Live.
04:42We both did SCTV, whatever.
04:43And then all of a sudden we're in this room with these people.
04:45So the two of us were just like, can you believe we're here?
04:47Can you believe we're here?
04:48That's all I remember.
04:49But yeah, it was pretty cool, yeah, I just thought.
04:52Thank you for reminding me of that.
04:54That's cool.
04:55If you don't know, look up my sister, Mary Margaret O'Hara.
04:58Amazing singer.
04:59Made an album many years ago, Virgin Mary.
05:01It's still on top 100 lists.
05:03People, really cool.
05:04Way ahead of her time.
05:05Time to be found.
05:06The album's called Miss America.
05:07Mary Margaret O'Hara.
05:08Black Rider sister.
05:09We've talked a lot about the 90s bands and artists
05:13that have inspired your character Astrid in this film,
05:16but NME has had quite a big week
05:18because a certain band called Oasis have announced that they've reunited.
05:22And I wondered, as Americans, whether you guys have heard about that.
05:26No, I had no idea.
05:28I had no idea that they were back.
05:30That's insane.
05:31Blur or Oasis, Catherine?
05:33Oasis.
05:35What are you asking me?
05:38It's a feud.
05:39I love how you immediately went for that.
05:41It's a feud.
05:42I don't partake in taking sides when there's a feud.
05:45You just did.
05:46Write it down.
05:47She said Oasis.
05:48I thought you were asking which band he was talking about.
05:51He's talking about Oasis.
05:53You've got to answer that yourself now, Jenna.
05:56Can I be honest?
05:57I actually just heard Wonderwall for the first time a month ago.
06:00I actually sat down and listened to the whole thing.
06:02It was like a thing.
06:03I got attacked about it for not knowing it by X.
06:08Oh, stop.
06:09I listened to Blur.
06:12I haven't really gotten into Oasis.
06:14I just love that you got attacked.
06:16Yeah, but again, I don't really have the history of Oasis
06:19and Oasis listening to really say.
06:21I just remember their haircuts.
06:23Same kind of Roman look.
06:25Same kind of what look?
06:28The Roman look.
06:29That early George Clooney look.
06:31Oh, really?
06:32That's what their hair do.
06:33I thought you meant like Romans were like ancient Romans.
06:36Roman soldiers?
06:38Crucify him.
06:39No.
06:42Okay, I wasn't expecting that answer, but that was weird.
06:45Thanks so much for speaking to me today.
06:47Yeah, thank you.
06:53The juice is loose.
07:02The juice is loose.
