00:00So next up we are on to the second final of the men's double skulls
00:09We have 18 boats competing here
00:14Lots of strong contenders we saw the heats of course in this yesterday. There was a very exciting racing
00:24Choppy conditions and it did lead to many collisions in this category in particular
00:30and
00:31So there was a lot of boats that were excluded and from this
00:36Final unfortunately, but here we have the top 18
00:40crews top six from three heats yesterday came through
00:45The winners of those heats yesterday. We've to look out for now is the crew from New Zealand or to New Zealand rowing
00:52That is Matthew Dunham and Finlay Hamill
00:55Sweden or one Dennis Gustafsson and Eskild Borg and
01:00Then we had the crew from Netherlands
01:03Finn Florin joined by Lennart van Lierop
01:06So they were the winners of the heats
01:10yesterday
01:12But as we know anything can happen out there and I think some people, you know
01:17Conserve themselves a little bit. Of course, we have USA or one in this category as well
01:22Chris Bach Corey Rogers who won this last year. They finished second in their heat
01:30Yesterday so I'm sure they'll be hoping to do a little better
01:33But you can see some of the crews trying to go for a running start here. We haven't seen that too often here at all
01:41Throughout the racing. Most people have tried to be a bit careful because it is the first water start since
01:482019 back in Hong Kong was the first or was the last time we did this before
01:53That it was generally all water starts, but in recent years, they have been using those beach starts much more often
01:59So back to the water start this year. We saw some crews
02:03Doing a running start there in this category
02:05Whereas all day really people have been really careful and just lining themselves up behind those floating markers at the start
02:13So we're off here. There's already one crew out
02:18They have their heads held down that looks like to be going by the speed
02:25New Zealand or two, but I will clarify that in a second
02:30New Zealand to if it was they won their heat yesterday. They will not want to be in that position at all right now
02:38So there must have been a clash there at the start and they were unsure whether to keep going and look like but here they
02:44Off again, let's see if they can get back into those leading packs because we would expect them to be in
02:50contention here for a medal
02:52So at the moment early stages of this race and it is a France. Oh
02:58Three here leading this out
03:03They are followed in by a Spain or three so France or three
03:08We have a Korean boolean come on Thomas they finished second yesterday in the heat
03:14Currently leading it out here
03:16Second position at the moment Spain or three then who are also second in their respective heat. We've Jamie Aaron Esquilas and Yvonne
03:24Renoso Carollo, so they're your top two at the moment then Finland Oh one pushing themselves into the top three position
03:31No
03:32Surprises their Yolanda Karanen of Finland back in the boat back on the water
03:37after his men's solo heat a little earlier on
03:43Yuka Pekka happy then joining him. They were third in their heat
03:47Ukraine Oh one now moving up in to these top positions
03:52Staying really close to each other at the moment
03:56We always know in the heats things seem to be much more spread out
04:00Whereas when it comes to the finals crews are much more matched here now
04:05So Ukraine now putting on a fight here moving in to first position just ahead of France
04:12Oh three Finland Oh two, you can see those top three boats are side by sides
04:18They have about half a length of clear water then against fourth fifth and six
04:23That is Netherlands Ukraine or two and USA or one
04:27But you can see there are seven boats eight boats there in a line together
04:32For those third fourth positions, so too early to say at the moment
04:36They're about 750 meters in to this race
04:39Now this is going to get interesting because it within the next 500 meters crews are gonna have to decide where they are going to
04:47Position themselves to get around that first marker boy
04:51Incredibly important that you set yourself up to avoid any collisions any
04:57Thing that we saw there yesterday because there was lots of them lots of crews excluded
05:02Which we do not want to see here in the finals
05:04So I think at this point the crews will be making a call to let's put on a bit of a push here now
05:10Let's go for it. Let's try and get to that
05:13Turning marker first so Ukraine now have moved themselves in to the lead
05:18That is Ukraine Oh one representing Central Sports Club of the Army of Ukraine Igor Kamara and Stanislav Kozlov
05:25First position at the moment Finland Oh
05:29One sorry are thin in that second position. We can see on the inside of that picture that you're seeing but still
05:36Five six seven eight boats here very very close together this turning marker
05:42Even though it's not too sharp is going to get very interesting. I feel
05:47We can see New Zealand or two who are unlucky at the start have moved up through the field back up into there
05:53Currently in ninth position
05:55Let's see what they can do if they can do anything special if they make it up into this leading pack
06:00That will be a one for the record books
06:03I would say so Ukraine one now starting to really put on that push here now
06:07Trying to open up the 14 meters of a lead over Finland currently sitting in second position
06:13and then it's a toss-up between
06:15Ukraine two and
06:17France to Sweden one all moving back and forth between
06:22Positions here at the moment. So we're looking at
06:25Them coming up to that first marker now within the next 50 meters or so
06:30Ukraine one Finland one now just moving into the lead ahead of Ukraine two who have moved themselves into
06:37Metal position Sweden one though. I haven't mentioned too much about them Dennis Gustafsson and Eskil Borg
06:44winning this category in
06:462021 and
06:482022 unlucky to miss out on that top spot last year
06:51They were finished second to the crew from USA who are currently in
06:56Seventh position. So here we go first turning marker Ukraine are unclean Finland are around clean
07:02Let's see. There are five boats here coming in on top of each other. Everyone managed that pretty well here
07:08There's a crew right in the middle. They're gonna get stuck on each other
07:13But the top five six boats now are away from each other some of them having to steer right off course now to stay out
07:20Of that collision and I'm delighted to be joined by Whitney team USA
07:27You are here. You are coxing this weekend. Have you been watching the race? Lots of exciting things going on here
07:42And and
07:45Finland in second followed by France to and boy
07:49This is quite a race already as we have seen coming around the first buoy
07:52We've seen boats going off course and trying to make their way to that second buoy there
07:58But it is already chaos out there as we all know if you have been out there on the water
08:03Yes
08:04We knew there was going to be chaos in these finals because the rowers are so evenly matched
08:08But look at this now the lead from Ukraine. I'm sorry
08:11I think people missed my introduction with me you have been coxing here with a cruise from USA
08:17Thank you for joining me here now. Very exciting. I'm looking at USA here Chris and Corey
08:22They're back in seventh position. They won this category last year
08:26Is that a place they would have expected to be at the stage of the race?
08:28You know
08:29It's really hard to say at this point because as we all know so much can change even around one buoy you could go from
08:34Seventh to first in no time flat. So these two are actually very very experienced together
08:41So they do row flat water as well as coastal together
08:45But many many years in the water together putting blades through these waves and they are very accustomed to dealing in
08:51With very stressful conditions here. So, you know while they are sitting in sixth right now
08:56It looks like about 73 seconds off the lead position here. That does not mean anything
09:01I would not worry about them yet
09:03So I would say as I always say as a coxswain and as a commentator here
09:07It is not over until it is over
09:08And so I think Chris and Corey are going to utilize their experience and have a very very confident race plan going into the second
09:16Half here, so I would expect great things from them. Absolutely. They had such an exciting race last year
09:21They were in second to Sweden. Sorry, they were in first ahead of Sweden for a lot of the race
09:26They went slightly wrong on their navigation allowed Sweden to move into the lead
09:30But Corey and Chris particularly with the beach finish and they got the sprint and they ended up winning it ahead of Sweden
09:36So even by going wrong, they were still able to come back and win this category
09:40But I definitely think we will see them move up through the field shortly. Things are moving here
09:45It is currently Ukraine still leading it out from Finland
09:48But Sweden have pushed themselves up into third position ahead of France to New Zealand to this is incredibly impressive
09:54Because as we saw they had a problem at the start and were stopped dead while everyone else took off
09:58They went from 18th position and have moved themselves back up to fifth. Oh if we're not careful
10:03We're gonna see another collision here
10:05exactly
10:05and even as we look now on the screen we can see Finland making that sharp turn and even so taking the inside there and
10:11As we were just saying
10:13Anything can happen within a split second one buoy can change the course of the entire rest of the race for a crew
10:18And I think what we're seeing here is very very exciting
10:21Some of these crews getting pushed out a little bit wider than they may like
10:24Having to make a much sharper turn and having to stop which stops the momentum of the boat where they have to pick it up
10:30Again, but we see a very very good move from Finland here again still in that second place
10:35But only about seven seconds or so so a lot can change
10:39Absolutely, and that was probably the one of the sharpest turns here now
10:42So we expected to see some exciting things here now at Ukraine now
10:47Just a meter is less than that separating them between themselves and Finland
10:51You're all in a car and in there is putting on a bit of a push here what you could pecker there
10:57Representing Finland lots of these roars were out just a while ago in the men's solo heats and obviously due to schedule changes
11:04They're here again
11:04A lot of them will be racing again in the men's solo later on
11:07But another crew that I'm seeing move up through the field is Ireland or one we have no credan and Nilo Sullivan
11:13They were way back the field 10 11. They've pushed themselves up into sixth position
11:18They got a silver medal at the Europeans did really really well a new pairing and all has lots of experience
11:25Neil is quite young and they've been put together here and they're starting to move up the field here now with New Zealand
11:30Yeah, exactly. You are right about that
11:31And one thing I've noticed about the Irish crews here too is they are very good in the open water
11:36Very good in the flat water
11:37So as soon as they make a turn around a buoy
11:39They make up a lot of headway in these straightaways and they're very very good about getting their blades in the water
11:45Especially when the water is a little bit flatter like this
11:47Sure
11:47we have a little bit of wash but the Irish are very very good at keeping their blades in the water for a long time and
11:53Really maximizing those straightaways and it's been really interesting to see them
11:57Hold off a lot of these crews in so many different boat classes, not just what we're seeing here in the doubles
12:03I'm sure they'll appreciate that compliment
12:05I'll take it back
12:07Compliment for the Irish, of course
12:08So Ukraine one we're still seeing in the lead around that turning point Finland
12:14One just going around Sweden one in that bronze medal position at the moment
12:20France to ride up behind them as our New Zealand
12:24Ireland a one right up behind them. This is gonna be another interesting turn
12:28I think but you can see just how kind of messy it is here now
12:30Oh Arla just getting caught almost went over there
12:34And they're having to correct themselves to get to the correct side of that boy here
12:39You can see it. No, they're elbowing the boy out of the way
12:42And we do see France ending up on the other side
12:45They're really having to go around and knock that buoy over unbelievable action here around this buoy
12:50We've seen so many crews missing some of these buoys and having to go back around again
12:55if not get excluded and so it is so important to hit the right side of that buoy and make sure
13:00That we are not getting pushed outside
13:03Especially in the chaos when you're trying not to get hit or collide with another crew
13:07Absolutely. We saw it in the last race the women's solo at Diana Dimchenko missed one of the turning points
13:12She continued on and unfortunately has been given a did not finish of her race or missed out on a gold medal there
13:18So so important that you do navigate one crew. We didn't mention. There was the Netherlands
13:23We had seen a shot of them there
13:25We have the Olympic champions of in the floor in that Lennart of on Europe. They're winning the men's quad in Paris
13:32They won their heat. So I'm sure they'll be a little bit surprised to be back in 10th position at the moment
13:37Yeah, that's right again
13:38But we never say that it's that it's over until it's over right because again one buoy can change the course of many
13:44Places in the course of this race and that's what makes these so exciting now. You've been watching this almost all day
13:50I would love to hear from you, too
13:51if you see a difference in some of the crews that are actually holding water on one side around some of these crews or the
13:57Ones that are just taking it maybe a little bit wider
14:00But actually only steering with the boat rather than holding water and stopping momentum
14:04Are you seeing any difference in any of that any patterns?
14:08Not really patterns is changing a lot. I think a lot of people are just
14:13Continuing to pull with both sides maybe easing a little bit of power on one
14:18But you can see definitely the more experienced rowers are trying to hug the boys, you know go for that shorter line
14:24We can see here now the blades just going in there on the right side
14:28But you see here you'll see different crews like we have Finland Sweden. There's so much experience in that crew
14:34They were hugged that boy trying to get a short line
14:38France then just going around there in that fourth position
14:41Just a little bit off that third position at the moment about 25 meters or so
14:45Just getting cut off here now again at New Zealand or two still in that
14:51fifth position Ireland and France didn't have a great battle for a sixth and
14:56Seventh now you've been out on the course. You've been coxing
14:59How have you found this because obviously it's been designed for it to be spectator friendly, but I'm not sure these
15:04Crews here who are stuck in that crash down the course on the top right inside of our screens will be happy with these
15:12Turning points exactly you said it right there a lot of these buoys are quite close together
15:17And so we've had a lot of bunching. I was in the men's quad and so even in the men's quad race
15:22We had so much bunching going on in certain points of the race that you really have to be strategic about finding your line
15:29To take that inside turn on those buoys in the chicane
15:32so very very important that you
15:34Constantly keep your head on a swivel and your eyes open for any of those gaps where you can actually cut on the inside of
15:40a buoy perhaps cutting on the inside of a line
15:43for a crew that perhaps takes a buoy a little bit too wide and you can actually move up again as we've said before quite
15:49a few places in just seconds
15:51so we actually did that in our heat this morning cut on the inside of a lane and
15:55Cut off a few boats just taking one turn a little bit tighter, but hesitating actually
16:00So sometimes you'll see some of these boats actually
16:03Hesitating just a stroke or two just a split second to open up that window on the inside
16:08Of that turn so they can have the better line around the buoy which is really really strategic
16:13So you have to have confidence if you're going to hesitate just a moment, but it can pay off
16:17I think confidence is the key particularly for the coxswains in these
16:21Crews in the quads that you were in earlier. You do need to have confidence. You can't go out there fearing
16:26What's gonna happen? But here look second and third position getting caught up. That is Finland and Sweden
16:32Oh, they were lucky there that they weren't stopped for too long
16:35Let's see if France to can make use of that little stoppage Ukraine one just powering it out here
16:41They're into their final
16:43500 meters now of this race at the moment Sweden moving ahead of Finland here
16:48This is going to be a complete sprint finish then in a fourth position France to New Zealand
16:54Currently in fifth France three have moved themselves up into six ahead of Ireland. Oh one so less than 400 meters to go
17:01It's just give it everything now, isn't it?
17:04Absolutely, and I think we're seeing it now here the experience in the Swedish and the Finnish crews here coming out of that turn
17:09And a little bit of a collision there
17:11They kept their cool and they actually kept a very good line coming out of that buoy
17:16Where they did have just a little bit of crossing of the blades there and they were able to separate but also maintain their course
17:22Going into the second one where they were not deviated to too much. They weren't distracted too much
17:27They got right back in it
17:28And even now we've seen a little bit of a change of place here Sweden
17:31Overtaken Finland now in that second place
17:34Yes, but it is gonna come it down to the final 200 meters here now. Can Sweden hold them off?
17:40I'm sure they'll be happy that they won't have to do a beach finish like last year where they had to
17:45Challenge Chris and Corey of USA, but it is no doubt about the leaders here now right from pretty much the first stroke Ukraine
17:53Have had such an amazing race here staying so cool and calm and we've seen their crews just doing so well here on
18:00The water is Sweden a one just holding off about five meters between them and Finland France, too
18:06I think there's just too much work for them to do here now
18:09Really the only change that might happen is Finland, but I'm not sure there's enough water at this stage
18:14Last 70 meters here for the leaders. Yeah, exactly. I think you said it here
18:19They may be running out of real estate here
18:20But look how loose and calm and cool this Ukraine crew is they are getting their blades in on the front end there
18:26They have a little bit of flatter water here
18:28Maybe some light swells, but as they cross the line just looking so smooth and calm and collected. This is clearly a very experienced crew
18:36Absolutely, so calm and collected Finland doing a what they can here now, but they know it is too late
18:42It is Sweden or one Dennis Gustafsson and Eskil Borg second last year second again this year
18:48And they in a third position that bronze medal position
18:52You'll not Karen in who we saw earlier in the solo you keep a cap we then joining him bronze medal position
19:00France or to then unlucky to miss out on a medal New Zealand or two
19:03We have to hand it to New Zealand or two who had a lot of trouble there at the start of their race Matthew
19:09Donovan Finlay Hamill
19:10they had stopped edge, but they got going moved from 18 to all the way up to fifth position and
19:16Here final a few crews next few crews passing that finish line with Ireland or one in seventh position
19:23I'm sure they'll be happy with that Noel Creighton and Nilo Sullivan. That's right
19:27It is so fun to to see so many Olympians and so many flat water rowers coming out here to do the coastal
19:33The coastal rowing experience as one might say, I know we've had the Dutch crew come out
19:38Then all of them have just won Olympic gold medals
19:40We see a lot of Olympic experience here coming out here to experience the waves and the surf and see how they do in
19:47the coastal rowing
19:49Field here. So it's really it really levels the playing field. I think a little bit across the board
19:54So very exciting to see so much talent out here in these doubles so much talent
19:59I think it's great that like club rowers can come here and race against Olympians national rowers
20:05Like you don't get that in many sports. Yeah, absolutely right about that
20:09So second final of the afternoon the coastal men's double skulls final few crews now coming up to that
20:17Finish line seeing beautiful shots here of Genoa
20:21How have you found your experience so far of Genoa and the course and the racing and the whole championships?
20:27You know, it really has been spectacular here such a beautiful coastline beautiful city
20:32It's such a great venue for racing out of the weather has been very variable as we will say the wind
20:37Constantly changing directions the tides coming in so it has definitely kept things interesting and we haven't had too many large swells
20:43But a little bit of wash a little bit of wind changes
20:46Tough starts. I know at the start. There's a lot of drifting and it's very strategic at the start line
20:51So we've had to pay attention to some very different things here out on this course
20:55But you sir, you sure can't beat the view and once you get out there, the course is beautifully set up. It's really nice
21:01It's fun to go racing around some chicanes and racing some other amazing amazing
21:05Boats that have come from all around the world here to meet us on these beautiful little rocky beaches of Genoa
21:12But it has been such a fabulous experience
21:16And of course, you'll be hoping to be racing again tomorrow in the b-finals. That's right. That's right
21:23Yes, we did have a little bit of a hiccup at our start here
21:26So we will be racing in the b-final tomorrow. But
21:30Yes, here we go. Looking at the results for the a final here for the men's doubles
21:34Yes ukraine won their winning out in style igor kamara stanislav
21:40Kovalev there and then dennis gustaf in a skill board of sweden won
21:46Finland won then had been in second for a lot of that race back into third
21:50But i'm sure they'll be happy to be up on the podium
21:52The fourth year twins then of france in fourth position
21:58Dunham and hamill of new zealand
22:00Dunham and hamill of new zealand
22:02Amazing race from them to get back into fifth position
22:04France or three and six ireland or one a great race there in seventh
22:08Then we had two spanish crews spain. Oh one spain. Oh three and lithuania or one in tenth position
22:14Some great racing
