Seychelles is Africa's most educated nation, on a continent where an estimated 182 million adults can't read or write.

00:06Archaeologists have identified several ancient scripts from the continent, including the Ge'ez script of Ethiopia,
00:13the Nsibidi symbols from Nigeria, and the Edinkra symbols of Ghana.
00:19Unfortunately, the modern Latin alphabet has replaced many of these indigenous writing systems.
00:25Here are five things you need to know about literacy in Africa.
00:30182 million adults are unable to read and write.
00:3448 million youths aged between 15 and 24 are illiterate.
00:39Around 30 million primary age children are not in school.
00:44More than 75% of all children ages 5 to 9 do not attend school.
00:52But there is good news.
00:54Seychelles and South Africa have the highest levels of adult literacy in Africa.
00:5996% and 95% respectively.
