00:00:00Championship boxing. Tonight's fight coming to you live from Las Vegas features Michael Doakes,
00:00:06as in put up your dokes, versus the undefeated Evander Holyfield. At this point every single
00:00:13boxing person I've talked to, including my mom who does freelance sparring down at Gleason's gym,
00:00:19most boxing fans I've spoken to, and I talk to them quite a bit, agree that if there's anyone
00:00:25who might someday beat Mike Tyson, it's Don Motts. No, I'm sorry, I mean Evander Holyfield. But first
00:00:34he's got to survive Michael Doakes. Should be a good match and a great opportunity to see a boxing
00:00:39superstar on his way up. So sit back, relax, and get ready for a big, big fight. It's your Showtime
00:00:48Championship Boxing, live.
00:02:48Mike Doakes, I'm not going to let you stop me or anybody else.
00:03:18Evander, this is guerrilla warfare.
00:03:25Live from the Caesars Palace Sports Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nevada,
00:03:30Holyfield or Doakes, a date with destiny. Tonight it's the Continental Americas Heavyweight
00:03:35Championship with fast rising heavyweight Evander Holyfield against former WBA heavyweight champ
00:03:41Michael Doakes.
00:03:48And we welcome you to Showtime Championship Boxing.
00:03:53As we focus in on faces of the crowd, they've all come to see Evander Holyfield and Michael
00:03:58Doakes. They could also be seeing a future challenger for the heavyweight pro. The faces
00:04:02include the legendary George Burns and Cheryl. And take my fight, doctor, please. Hello again,
00:04:09everybody. Steve Albert along with the fight doctor, Bernie Pacheco. Welcome to another
00:04:14edition of Showtime Championship Boxing. Getting ready for the big one, Holyfield versus Doakes.
00:04:19We should also point out here at the top, the IBF Junior Welterweight Championship featuring
00:04:23Meldrick Taylor and Zhang Jiang. Packing of the Philippines had to be canceled because of a knee
00:04:27injury sustained by Taylor during training sessions earlier in the week. But to the main
00:04:32event, Holyfield versus Doakes, two fighters who have but one defeat between them, Bernie.
00:04:37Yeah, this fight was ridiculously priced at 9 to 1 when it started in the favor of Holyfield.
00:04:42But then the experts got to looking at Doakes. He's well-conditioned, determined to prove that
00:04:46he can come back from a terrible fall in drugs and alcohol abuse. On Evander Holyfield's part,
00:04:53I think this represents his biggest test. Is he really a heavyweight? The last two heavyweights
00:04:57he fought proved very easy and not a contest at all. Tonight, I think we're in for a desperate
00:05:02battle. Should the winner emerge as the logical choice to meet Mike Tyson? The logical and the
00:05:08only choice to be considered number one in Tyson's path. Michael Doakes says he doesn't
00:05:13want to leave this fight in the hands of the judges. He's looking for the early knockout,
00:05:16which could spell a very explosive affair. He's had a career that's read almost like a
00:05:22Hollywood script. Right now, let's explore the career of Michael Doakes with Bernie.
00:05:26And on the 26th of July 1975, the boxing world took notice of 17-year-old Michael Doakes when
00:05:35he won the North American Boxing Championship. Three years I've been through, I plan on being
00:05:39a world heavyweight champion. Now I'm starting out young. And seven years later, Doakes did
00:05:45become the heavyweight champion of the world with a stunning first round TKO of Mike Weaver.
00:05:51The following year, a different Doakes lost his title to Jerry Cozzia in a 10th round knockout.
00:05:56Discouraged, Michael Doakes slid into a self-destructive life of drugs and alcohol,
00:06:01which ended when his old friend Marty Cohen appeared to guide him back to boxing and sanity.
00:06:08And I know I've come to understand and love him immensely behind the teachings and everything
00:06:17that he has expressed to me. And I'm sure that in the years that we've been together,
00:06:27he's come to respect me and understand me and look at me in a different light also.
00:06:33I think we've both seen each other grow in a sense and in different ways.
00:06:39Marty Cohen, it's a gift to come this late in your life to have someone like Michael Doakes
00:06:44to manage. How did that relationship happen? Well, I saw Mike in the amateurs about 17,
00:06:5318 years ago. He boxed in our area in Miami. He boxed at the gloves at the Orange Bowl.
00:07:00And Michael came to me one day. It was at the home of DK. You recall that, Mike?
00:07:07And we sat down, we were talking. And I could see something. He was reaching out. He was
00:07:17looking for someone that he could talk to. And so his time went by. It was no need
00:07:28for me to box him. But it was for the love of a kid.
00:07:38I well up every time you ask me these things.
00:07:43Because there is a bond of love between us.
00:07:47The money, forget about it. Even if he had no money, I got money.
00:07:55And he chairmaned that money. He's in my will. He didn't know it. I just told him.
00:08:02That's the truth. No, it's not a question of money. And when he got down
00:08:10to the depths of hell, the bowels, the worst, the bottom of the ocean.
00:08:18I cried. I was sad. And the day that he called me from the rehab, that he wants to come back.
00:08:32The world opened up again for me. I said, Michael, you want to make it?
00:08:39If Doakes is going to make it back through the threshold to recognition and fortune,
00:08:44he will have to beat the formidable opponent, Evander Holyfield.
00:08:51So from an emotional Marty Cohn and Michael Doakes, a dramatic effect as the spotlight
00:08:58falls on the challenger, Evander Holyfield, a rare scene, as you will see in a moment,
00:09:05as Holyfield will make his way to the ring before his opponent. And here he comes with his entourage,
00:09:11familiar face of trainer Lou Duva. George Benton there, Ronnie Shields and cut man Ace Morada.
00:09:18Holyfield returning to the same ring where he won two of his three Cruiserweight titles
00:09:22and the box off, which earned him a spot on the U.S. Olympic team in 84.
00:09:26A trimmed down Evander Holyfield 208 was 210. His last fight looking to outspeed,
00:09:34out quick the 225 pound Michael Doakes. Holyfield is the favorite, but nobody is taking Michael
00:09:40Doakes lightly. Holyfield 20 and 0, 16 KOs rated number two by the WBA out of Atlanta, Georgia.
00:09:48And he gets the salute from the big crowd here at Caesars Palace,
00:09:51the former world Cruiserweight champion who relinquished his title to set his sights
00:09:56on the heavyweight crowd. Capacity crowd over 4,000 here at the Caesars Palace
00:10:05Sports Pavilion, the home of champions and the scene of so many historic championship
00:10:11fights here on the Las Vegas Strip. And as you might expect, the champion Michael Doakes
00:10:22will make Mr. Holyfield wait. Evander is not used to this.
00:10:27Evander Holyfield, off the victory over former WBC heavyweight champion Hanklin Thomas.
00:10:36As that fight was stopped at the end of the seventh round. In his previous fight,
00:10:40his heavyweight debut in Tahoe, he stopped James Quick Killis in the fifth round.
00:10:49So we are awaiting the WBC Continental America's heavyweight champion,
00:10:53the WBC Continental America's heavyweight champion, Michael Dynamite Doakes.
00:11:00On the comeback trail, 8 and 0 since the drug rehabilitation.
00:11:08Michael Doakes, who is four years the senior of Evander Holyfield, will be making his way.
00:11:14I see the cowboy hat of 91-year-old Marty Coe. So that means, along with the belt,
00:11:20here comes Michael Doakes. His ninth stop on the comeback trail, and he returns to the scene
00:11:27of his greatest triumph, the WBA heavyweight title over Mike Weaver in 1982 in this very ring.
00:11:38Michael Doakes, who has an extremely close personal bond with the man we heard and saw
00:11:45before, Marty Coe, the lovable manager, between them 96 years of boxing experience. There's Marty
00:11:53Coe, 78 years in the fight game. Michael Doakes says he's on a mission after a life-threatening
00:12:00cocaine addiction, fighting for self-esteem and hoping to get through to kids everywhere
00:12:04so they don't make the same mistakes he did. Doakes has straightened out his life,
00:12:09looks for a big upset tonight. A record of 37-1-2 with 23 KOs,
00:12:14rated number 8 by the WBC. Back to the top 10 at the age of 30, Marty Coe throwing flowers to the crowd.
00:12:26What boxing just keeps him young.
00:12:30Earlier, we asked Michael Doakes if a lack of foot speed on his part will enter in as a factor
00:12:37against Evander Holyfield tonight. Here's what he had to say.
00:12:43I don't think I'm going to have to look for Evander, and Evander is definitely not going
00:12:47to have to look for me, and it's not about fulfilling our process or anything like that,
00:12:51because we can do that after the fight. We can kiss and hug and all of that and congratulate
00:12:55one another, but then first second of that fight, we're going to be right there in the danger zone.
00:13:02The danger zone means the first part of the fight.
00:13:09Michael Doakes will be looking to put the pressure on immediately.
00:13:13Let's go up to ring announcer Chuck Ho for the pre-fight introduction.
00:13:17Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to Caesars Ports Pavilion,
00:13:21where tonight Main Events Monitor and Madison Square Garden Boxing,

00:14:24and your referee is Richard Steele.
00:14:28This is the main event of the evening,
00:14:3212 rounds of boxing for the Continental Americas Heavyweight Championship.
00:14:38Introducing, in the blue corner, fighting out of Atlanta, Georgia, weighing in at 208 pounds,
00:14:47with a professional record of 20 wins, no defeats, 16 KO's.
00:14:53He is a former undisputed cruiserweight champion of the world,
00:14:58and is the challenger, ladies and gentlemen, here is Evander Holyfield.
00:15:04And in the red corner, now fighting out of Miami Beach, Florida, weighing in at 225 pounds,
00:15:21his professional record consists of 37 wins, one defeat, two draws, with 23 KO's.
00:15:30He is a former WBA heavyweight champion of the world,
00:15:34and is the current Continental Americas Heavyweight Champion.
00:15:39Here is Dynamite's Michael Coats.
00:15:59Shake hands and put it up.
00:16:05Richard Steele with the final instructions, we'll take a look at the tail of the tape,
00:16:08Doakes is four years older than Holyfield.
00:16:11Doakes with the half-inch height advantage, Doakes at 225, 20 pounds lighter than when
00:16:16he began his comeback a little over two years ago.
00:16:18Holyfield trimming down to 208, he was 210 his last fight.
00:16:22Doakes the half-inch reach advantage.
00:16:23And the Nevada rules, scoring on the 10-point mush system, three-scoring jump,
00:16:27no standing eight count, the three knockdown rule is in effect.
00:16:31He can be saved by the belt only in the final round.
00:16:35Evander Holyfield, 20-0 with 16 knockouts.
00:16:40His toughest test to date against Michael Doakes, the former WBA heavyweight champion.
00:16:46Doakes said he's going to come right out, look for the knockout.
00:16:49And Evander Holyfield says he's just going to apply pressure.
00:16:53The fact that this fight is for the WBC Continental Americas title is almost irrelevant.
00:16:57Of much greater significance, the boxing future of two men at stake.
00:17:01Doakes looking to avoid fading into obscurity.
00:17:04Holyfield out to show the boxing world that he is Mike Tyson's next opponent.
00:17:09Well, they certainly have lived up to their billing.
00:17:12Very heavy shots to the body by Doakes.
00:17:14And Holyfield is responding two punches to one.
00:17:20Evander Holyfield in the blue trunks with the white trim.
00:17:24Michael Doakes in the white trunks.
00:17:27Oh, two good shots, but they were low by Dynamite Doakes.
00:17:31And Steele says keep him up.
00:17:33Doakes looking to go toe-to-toe from the outset.
00:17:37Oh, Holyfield standing right in front of him.
00:17:40Although Ludo was screaming, turn him, turn him.
00:17:44Holyfield said he is not obsessed with KOing Doakes.
00:17:46He just wants to win.
00:17:49Now, Doakes keeps landing those very low punches.
00:17:52It's beginning to bother Holyfield who keeps pulling his trunks up.
00:17:57Ludova says the key word here for Evander Holyfield is respect.
00:18:03Especially at the start, Holyfield has to go after Doakes early
00:18:07because Doakes intends to come out punching.
00:18:09And Doakes will figure, hey, he's just a light heavyweight.
00:18:13Well, it's in Doakes' favor.
00:18:14They're getting the punch out and they are in a punch out.
00:18:17Holyfield's superior reflexes are evident right now, though.
00:18:20One thing that was supposed to happen was the fast hands of Doakes
00:18:24should neutralize the superior reflexes of Holyfield.
00:18:27That has not happened right now.
00:18:30Well, there's no denying the skills of these two fighters.
00:18:34Ludova told him this fight will come from the gut.
00:18:37Well, it's going to the gut because Dynamite is working hard.
00:18:41Doakes working hard on the body of Holyfield.
00:18:43Holyfield coming back with serious punches to the head.
00:18:48Now, Doakes spinning Holyfield around, but Richard Steele breaks him up.
00:18:51The odds of this fight begin at nine to one favoring Holyfield.
00:18:55This morning, it was three and a half to one.
00:18:57Big lift by Holyfield.
00:18:59Holyfield is honing in right on Doakes' open face and he's landing solidly.
00:19:07Doakes, for his part, is trying to get down into the body
00:19:10to put some hurt on the much lighter Holyfield.
00:19:14Less than 30 seconds in the opening round.
00:19:16Scheduled for 12.
00:19:22And Doakes suffering from the apparent low blow.
00:19:25And now it's Doakes who got a low blow.
00:19:28There's a timeout.
00:19:29There's going to be a timeout to recover.
00:19:31Now, that's ironic because the entire first round had been low blows to Holyfield.
00:19:37But Holyfield, his punch went to an area where when the protector slides over, it hurts.
00:19:44It hit right in what's called the groin area.
00:19:47He now has 18 seconds time to recover.
00:19:52There's a timeout.
00:19:53When they come back, it's 18 seconds.
00:19:54He should be able to continue.
00:19:56He certainly will be able to continue for 18 seconds.
00:19:59Doakes takes a big, deep breath.
00:20:00Has blood coming from the lower lip.
00:20:03And continues.
00:20:08The worst respect coming from the corner of Evander Holyfield.
00:20:13And he certainly has gotten up.
00:20:15Holyfield at just T-lock on Doakes' exposed face.
00:20:20Doakes trying now to speed him, but can't.
00:20:22Oh, another low blow by Doakes.
00:20:28And that is it for round one.
00:20:31Action packed.
00:20:46Second round.
00:20:46Beautiful.
00:20:49Get on the side.
00:20:50He's got a tarp.
00:20:51Go ahead, George.
00:20:52All right.
00:20:52Now, listen.
00:20:54Now, the fight is on the chopping block.
00:20:55Come on, Mike.
00:20:56You got to get the jab off.
00:20:57You're hitting with that right hand.
00:20:58You got no reason to hit with that right hand.
00:20:59Get underneath it.
00:21:00Come up with your left hook to the body.
00:21:01All right?
00:21:02Come on, Mike.
00:21:02All right, Mike.
00:21:03All right, baby.
00:21:04Don't let him back you up.
00:21:08We'll take a look at the low blow by Holyfield.
00:21:11That certainly was south of the border.
00:21:13Now, they can call time, which they did.
00:21:15They have a normal amount of time.
00:21:17That could be a minute.
00:21:18That could be two minutes.
00:21:19It could be at the discretion of the referee.
00:21:20Certainly not longer than two minutes,
00:21:23at which time the fight either continues,
00:21:25he's disqualified, or he loses.
00:21:31Round two, scheduled for 12.
00:21:34Well, that first round lived up to everything
00:21:36both fighters told us they were going to do.
00:21:38Both tried to establish superiority.
00:21:40Both tried to get respect.
00:21:42And both landed low punches.
00:21:47And they come out with a furious exchange.
00:21:49And again, the second.
00:21:51A shuddered right that landed by Holyfield
00:21:53to the head of Doakes.
00:21:57Oh, and Doakes landed quite a bit of low,
00:21:59right by Holyfield,
00:22:00and a left by Holyfield to the head.
00:22:02Now another right by Holyfield.
00:22:04Holyfield landing clean blows to the head of Doakes.
00:22:06Doakes concentrating on the body
00:22:08and leading his head wide open.
00:22:12Now, two minutes, two minutes.
00:22:17That first round was a blazer,
00:22:18and this is a corker opening up from the second round.
00:22:21Look at the body shots that Doakes is putting in.
00:22:23At 20 pounds more, he wants to wear out Holyfield.
00:22:27He wants to get him down off his horse,
00:22:29and he wants to pound him as the rounds progress.
00:22:33Evander Holyfield, built like a football linebacker,
00:22:38trimming down to 208 for more quickness
00:22:40against the 225-pound Michael Doakes.
00:22:43Holyfield actually looked like he was upset,
00:22:45angry at the low blows earlier.
00:22:49Doakes giving no motion whatsoever,
00:22:52standing right in front of Holyfield.
00:22:53Holyfield can take a shot,
00:22:55give an angle, and not get hit in return.
00:22:59Holyfield looking to establish his left jab,
00:23:02which is probably his best weapon.
00:23:04Neither one of these men look like they expect to be here 12 rounds.
00:23:08Both of them are going for early knockouts here
00:23:11as they continue to zing very hard.
00:23:13Combination by Holyfield, but they didn't land.
00:23:17Holyfield trying to prove to the boxing world
00:23:19that he has knockout power.
00:23:21He did say publicly that he'd like to KO Michael Doakes,
00:23:25but you have to figure, deep down inside,
00:23:28he would like to prove a point.
00:23:29Well, Doakes is going for the knockout.
00:23:32He would like to prove a point.
00:23:33Well, Doakes has got concrete in his chin,
00:23:36and he's got a huge heart.
00:23:37Nothing wrong with that.
00:23:38It's his legs, south of the border, that are in question,
00:23:41but he's been known to take some great shots
00:23:44by heavy-punching heavyweights.
00:23:45Can Holyfield's shots be enough to stop Doakes?
00:23:48That's what we're going to find out.
00:23:53Low blows again by Doakes.
00:24:02Get that respect!
00:24:03Get that respect!
00:24:04The voice of Moe Duva.
00:24:05Get that respect.
00:24:07Get that respect!
00:24:07Get that respect!
00:24:08Get that respect!
00:24:09Get that respect!
00:24:11To the head goes Doakes, and both punches connected.
00:24:15Holyfield misses with a left.
00:24:17Holyfield's left hook has the right grunt
00:24:19to the thing of beauty.
00:24:19He's been missing it, but it's getting closer and closer.
00:24:22Those are the knockout punches when they land.
00:24:24After a combination, that left hook is usually kicked off.
00:24:28That's the one that knocks you out.
00:24:31And that is it for round two.
00:24:36This fight at a furious pace.
00:24:40The fight started out fast.
00:24:42They tried to establish superiority.
00:24:44Neither one established a big superiority,
00:24:46although in rounds, I certainly have a bet
00:24:48on Holyfield winning the first two rounds
00:24:50by a very, very narrow margin.
00:24:52But he's ahead 20-18 quite unofficially
00:24:56on my court and scorecard.
00:24:57Stay down and go to the body, okay?
00:24:59I don't know if you'll work all day long on him.
00:25:01Either hook or right hand, all right?
00:25:03Come on, Mike. Don't pull up.
00:25:06Now, let's see if this is a low blow by Doakes.
00:25:09Indeed, that has been happening
00:25:11all during the first two rounds,
00:25:13discombobulating Mike Evander Holyfield,
00:25:16who's getting more and more exasperated by these blows
00:25:20and no warnings from Richard Steele.
00:25:22Come on, Mike.
00:25:23You ain't got several punches now.
00:25:24Come on.
00:25:25Let's get this done.
00:25:30Round three scheduled for 12.
00:25:34The stakes are high tonight,
00:25:36but they're higher for Evander Holyfield.
00:25:38Both have a lot to gain,
00:25:39but Holyfield risking his status
00:25:41as Mike Tyson's ultimate opponent.
00:25:46Now, for once, all of a sudden,
00:25:47Doakes trying to outjam Holyfield.
00:25:55Somebody's mouthpiece just fell out.
00:25:59It's Doakes.
00:26:00It's Doakes' mouthpiece.
00:26:01Doakes pouring in, going to the body.
00:26:03Holyfield, his quickness, able to endure those punches.
00:26:09Holyfield smiles at Doakes, saying,
00:26:11I'm okay. You didn't hurt me.
00:26:13With those punches that land in the arms and body,
00:26:16you're going to be able to tell the effect of those
00:26:18in another few rounds.
00:26:19He's now landing clutch to the face of Doakes.
00:26:21Back comes Holyfield with some good shots to the head.
00:26:24Crisp right uppercut by Holyfield.
00:26:27Doakes without the mouthpiece.
00:26:31Both have opened up differently this round,
00:26:33going to the head, building up an early lead.
00:26:36Punch after punch rains on Holyfield without an answer.
00:26:50If this fight goes beyond four or five rounds,
00:26:54stamina will begin to play a role.
00:26:56Well, that's what Doakes is counting on with his early attack.
00:27:00Hard attack to the head of Holyfield,
00:27:03who's not fighting back.
00:27:05He's standing still, taking these shots from Doakes,
00:27:07and that can't be good, folks.
00:27:09Holyfield looks a bit frustrated.
00:27:11Not only frustrated, he looks tired,
00:27:13and he looks a little hurt.
00:27:15He's been tagged.
00:27:16He has been run by Michael Doakes.
00:27:18Here's the third.
00:27:19Doakes switching to the hand, and surprise.
00:27:22Holyfield, who's taking big shots.
00:27:23Combination by Doakes.
00:27:25Big punishment by Doakes on Holyfield,
00:27:28who doesn't seem to come back with his own attack.
00:27:31That leg was a crazy punch by Doakes,
00:27:33but it was a great thought.
00:27:35That took justice.
00:27:37Holyfield came in.
00:27:38If he caught him, he would have been on the seat of his pants.
00:27:45Doakes showing a lot of heart.
00:27:48That is what you see.
00:27:49All the heart in the world is coming out of Doakes
00:27:52as he wants to win a round
00:27:53and begin to establish his mastery.
00:27:58Michael Doakes fighting most of this round
00:28:00without the mouthpiece.
00:28:01There was a great crush by Holyfield that landed.
00:28:04Now it's Holyfield on the attack.
00:28:06And now it's Doakes taking a breather.
00:28:11Doakes tiring here towards the end of round three.
00:28:15He's putting a very heavy, heavy round of punching.
00:28:19He should post the rest of the round.
00:28:20I'm sure he will.
00:28:22Apparently a winning round for Michael Doakes.
00:28:34The frantic action reaches out.
00:28:37And these guys dead.
00:28:38These guys dead.
00:28:39Now listen,
00:28:42go to the body.
00:28:43Go to the body.
00:28:44Now listen, don't be...
00:28:45What are you getting hit with them punches for?
00:28:46You got no business getting hit with them punches.
00:28:48Now go to that body.
00:28:49You understand?
00:28:51Now look, take your time.
00:28:52Don't throw yourself away.
00:28:54You understand?
00:28:54But stay focused on the fight.
00:28:59We'll take a look at the flurry from round three.
00:29:05Well, this was the attack that Evander finally launched
00:29:09only after being pummeled for the first two and a half minutes
00:29:12by Doakes who came out, switched to the head
00:29:14and was landing clean shots to the head
00:29:16of a bewildered Evander Holyfield.
00:29:19I don't think he has had this kind of a test
00:29:21in many, many fights.
00:29:22And he is getting a little frustrated.
00:29:24Certainly not as a heavyweight.
00:29:2891-year-old young Marty Pops Cohen
00:29:30has never taken a plug nickel from Michael Doakes.
00:29:34He didn't have to.
00:29:34He owned a coal mine and sold it.
00:29:36He doesn't need Doakes' money.
00:29:38Doakes says he loves Marty Cohen more than anyone else
00:29:40in the world with the exception of his mom.
00:29:43Doakes does not seem to be affected
00:29:45by the punches of Evander Holyfield
00:29:47as we enter round four.
00:29:48Well, that's been what we're here to prove.
00:29:50His Holyfield got a heavyweight punch.
00:29:52He's certainly been landing shots
00:29:54that would have hurt a lesser opponent than Michael Doakes.
00:29:57He looked like those right there.
00:29:59Two or three jabs with beautiful right hand.
00:30:01But that comes Doakes with that patented body attack.
00:30:05A lot of punches south of the border.
00:30:08Well, so far this fight, living up to reputation,
00:30:10it has been explosive.
00:30:12Doakes just doesn't pardon Holyfield.
00:30:17Anytime he gets in close,
00:30:18he gets a body shot for his trouble.
00:30:25Holyfield opens this round as he closes first and second
00:30:29doing most of the leading as Doakes has chosen
00:30:32right now to take another breather.
00:30:34Could be this toll is getting to Doakes as well.
00:30:42Go back to the jab, says the Holyfield corner.
00:30:46And the jab gets in.
00:30:48He created a jab.
00:30:51Doakes missed his.
00:30:52Holyfield did not.
00:30:58That's what you call a lottery punch.
00:31:00Just take your shot at something big.
00:31:05Now Holyfield goes to the body.
00:31:07Holyfield boxing much better
00:31:09while he's on the attack and initiating the action.
00:31:12He's faster than Doakes.
00:31:13But when Doakes starts, then it's a different ball game.
00:31:16Holyfield appears confused and flustered.
00:31:20It appears as if Holyfield has now gone to more finesse,
00:31:23more footwork.
00:31:24He's bouncing around a lot more now.
00:31:27I think he wants to take a breather from all of this
00:31:29hot and heavy in the trenches action.
00:31:31And that's the way to do it.
00:31:32Bounce around.
00:31:32He's got young legs.
00:31:33He can do it.
00:31:35You notice that Doakes is nailed to the canvas.
00:31:37He does not bounce around.
00:31:39He just stands still.
00:31:46I would say this crowd is split in terms of the popularity
00:31:49for these two fighters.
00:31:52Right down the middle.
00:31:54I think both are favorites of the crowd.
00:31:56And certainly sentimental favorites for Michael Doakes,
00:31:59who has come back from sheer hell
00:32:01to be a contender for the title.
00:32:03Two great stories.
00:32:04The former Olympian of the blue trunks,
00:32:06Savannah Holyfield.
00:32:08One of Boxing's consummate gentlemen out of the ring
00:32:12against the man who battled back from a severe cocaine addiction,
00:32:17Michael Doakes.
00:32:19Who lost to Jerry Cochise,
00:32:21his only defeat admittedly under the influence of cocaine.
00:32:25And then he straightened his life out
00:32:27onto trunk rehab.
00:32:29And he's 8-0 since the comeback.
00:32:32We'll follow a better Holyfield,
00:32:35the challenger for this countdown without his heavyweight title.
00:32:38Keep that hand going and hit that guy in the body a lot.
00:32:40Now, look, now don't let him out of hustle you on the inside.
00:32:43Just keep your hands moving, right?
00:32:45And his manager, Ken Sanders,
00:32:47who is also known as the chief executive officer
00:32:50for Team Holyfield.
00:32:52And a big deep breath for Mr. Sanders.
00:32:55Keep that good defense.
00:32:56When you catch points, just come back to the body.
00:32:58All kinds of celebrities in the crowd tonight
00:33:00here at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
00:33:05A pair of daredevils, Evel Knievel and his son Robby.
00:33:08On April 14th, a spectacular event will take place
00:33:11as Robby will attempt to jump the fountains
00:33:14in front of Caesars Palace on his motorcycle,
00:33:16a feat his father tried in 67.
00:33:20And rearrange practically every bone in his body.
00:33:24It'll be televised as a paid-per-view special
00:33:26live on April 14th.
00:33:31Round five, it's scheduled for 12.
00:33:35It's been a good one.
00:33:36Dokes reestablishing his mastery in that last round.
00:33:41I'm sorry, not Dokes.
00:33:42Evander Holyfield reestablishing his mastery
00:33:45by, again, a very slim margin
00:33:47as Dokes had to rest after that big, big round
00:33:51he had in the third.
00:33:52This has got to be, without question,
00:33:54Holyfield's most difficult test
00:33:56since he fought Dwight Muhammad Khaoui
00:33:58in the first of those two.
00:34:00That came in 86 in what many consider
00:34:07the fight of the year.
00:34:09Richard Steele, the third man of the ring.
00:34:30Look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look
00:35:00look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look
00:35:30He should be using that big weight to bar and confuse and frustrate
00:35:34Oh, he's gotten hurt. Did Holyfield hurt?
00:35:36He's got Holyfield in some trouble here
00:35:38He landed to the face
00:35:40Holyfield went from that shot
00:35:42Maybe he got a cut on the eye
00:35:44But his legs went wobbly
00:35:46He's back now but boy
00:35:48For a split second there
00:35:50It looked like it was bye-bye time for Holyfield
00:35:52Keep it up, keep it up
00:35:54Dokes continues to use the pressure
00:35:56Lean uppercuts to the head
00:35:58Snapping Holyfield's head back
00:36:00Now Holyfield turns Dokes around
00:36:02But Holyfield comes back
00:36:04With an uppercut
00:36:06It's Dokes that's trying to push him
00:36:08To push Holyfield into the right side
00:36:10Look who's stronger. Holyfield just puts
00:36:12The 20 pound heavier Dokes back
00:36:14Like he was a sack of flour
00:36:16And he did it again just then
00:36:18That's the head of the young Holyfield
00:36:20Strong and well conditioned
00:36:22Holyfield landing with uppercuts
00:36:24To the stomach of Dokes
00:36:26Oh, good uppercut
00:36:28Oh, good uppercut by Holyfield
00:36:30But not enough to win that round
00:36:32Which Dokes took
00:36:34From him in a blistering attack
00:36:36Along the ropes
00:36:40This was the first time
00:36:42When Dokes had Holyfield
00:36:44In trouble. Remember this
00:36:46When he winced
00:36:48That was big trouble
00:36:50And he was wincing, he was trying to
00:36:52Clear his head and of course
00:36:54With the stamina of youth and resiliency
00:36:56Holyfield came back
00:36:58But he was not the same fighter
00:37:00For the rest of that round
00:37:02Dokes doesn't have the spring in his legs
00:37:04That he had as a young man
00:37:06Or else he would have been pushing Holyfield
00:37:08Into the ropes and taking advantage
00:37:10From the waist up it's the old Dokes
00:37:12And from the waist down it's old man time
00:37:16Action from later in that 5th round
00:37:22Some crushing blows to the ribs by Dokes
00:37:26They'll take him in the battle
00:37:28He's got to go
00:37:30Don't let this son of a bitch back to it
00:37:32Round 6 scheduled for 12
00:37:34Dokes really being exhorted
00:37:36By his corner Bill Slaten
00:37:38Sterling McPherson
00:37:42Dokes in the right, Holyfield in the blue
00:37:44Holyfield doubling up on the jab
00:37:46And then the right
00:37:48No question this corner
00:37:50Sent him out to win this round
00:37:52They said hey you blew that last one
00:37:54But the fight, Holyfield
00:37:56Pressing the attack
00:37:58What zinging punches from Holyfield
00:38:00Right at the opening belt and landing
00:38:02On Dokes, but back comes Dokes
00:38:06His corner doesn't want to see this fight get close
00:38:08But it is close, they'll have it 48-47
00:38:10In favor of Evander Holyfield
00:38:12Again, I caution you, quite unofficially
00:38:14However, just when Holyfield
00:38:16Looks like he's going to pull it out
00:38:18Back comes Dokes with a big round
00:38:20Right now it's Holyfield
00:38:22At the top of this round
00:38:24And Dokes has said on repeated occasions
00:38:26He does not want this fight to fall
00:38:28Into the hands of the judges
00:38:30Because he feels he's the big boy of Las Vegas
00:38:32He feels the judges here don't like him
00:38:42A low blow takes a part of the game
00:38:44From Michael Dokes
00:38:46And that could mean very significant
00:38:48Very, very big in a close fight
00:38:50Unfortunate
00:38:52That means Dokes better win this round
00:38:54Or else he'll have a two-point deficit in this round
00:38:56And so far he has been
00:39:00Oh, great left hook
00:39:02Right on the jaw of Evander Holyfield
00:39:04Without effect
00:39:06Oh, and he comes back to Holyfield
00:39:08With a right thrust to the head of Dokes
00:39:10And lands right on the jaw
00:39:12Boy, what a jaw on Dokes
00:39:14Both these guys are pummeling at Dokes
00:39:17There's the left jab by
00:39:19Evander Holyfield
00:39:21By Dokes that sent
00:39:23Holyfield reeling backwards
00:39:26Holyfield does not look happy right now
00:39:32He's trying to get some zing back
00:39:36But Holyfield continues to lie
00:39:38With those short, crisp punches inside
00:39:40Inside
00:39:44A wild miss by Dokes
00:39:46He was going for the KO punch there
00:39:48But he did the fusion
00:39:50Four or five quick punches underneath
00:39:52And then hop over
00:39:54But those punches landed on the
00:39:56Exposed stomach belly of Holyfield
00:39:58So those are points
00:40:00No movement in the corner of Evander Holyfield
00:40:04Holyfield sends Dokes back
00:40:06But only after taking a
00:40:08Combination that was a thing of beauty
00:40:11Both guys scoring heavily in that exchange
00:40:15Furious exchanges since round one
00:40:18And they get in close
00:40:20Dokes is throwing a mean left hook
00:40:22Most of the time it misses
00:40:24But boy, what effect it had when it lands
00:40:30Good defensive job there by Dokes
00:40:33This stuff was sponsored by Holyfield
00:40:36Final seconds of round six
00:40:39And after the bell, they continue to go at it
00:40:48I detected an apology
00:40:53By the ball, Dokes and Holyfield there
00:40:55Dokes went to sit down on his stool
00:40:57To give himself a little tap there
00:41:00Work on that gut
00:41:03But things really turning ugly
00:41:05At the end of round six
00:41:10Dokes cut over the left arm
00:41:14His cut man is Tommy Gallagher
00:41:17So he goes to work
00:41:19It was an even round
00:41:21But they took a point away
00:41:23So that makes it even
00:41:26Let's see, at the end of round six
00:41:29Great! There was the bell
00:41:31And there are the extra points
00:41:33I don't know
00:41:35I don't think these two guys are any Durans
00:41:38They're both gentlemanly fighters
00:41:40That was just a mistake of not hearing the bell
00:41:42That was a curious round and they took one point away
00:41:44And somehow Dynamite managed to have
00:41:46Dokes managed to have an even round
00:41:48So that he only lost one point
00:41:50I still have it 58-56
00:41:52Vander Holyfield ahead by two points
00:41:54Quite unofficial
00:41:56Round seven scheduled for twelve
00:41:59Blood on the trunks
00:42:01The white trunks too
00:42:03Michael Dokes very evident
00:42:06It's from above his left eye
00:42:08And there goes the mouthpiece of Dokes again
00:42:10Holyfield trying to take advantage
00:42:12But Dokes is the man punching
00:42:14Now Dokes was severely hurt
00:42:16He's fighting back on guns now
00:42:18He was severely hurt
00:42:20If Holyfield can mount this attack
00:42:22He may end this now
00:42:24Dokes will not let Holyfield mount a barrage
00:42:27That was just pure heart
00:42:29On the part of Dokes
00:42:30He was severely hurt
00:42:31He's still hurt
00:42:32Combination by Holyfield
00:42:34With a face of Dokes
00:42:36Now Dokes goes back with a
00:42:38Combination
00:42:41And now there's some blood
00:42:43Around the left eye of Holyfield
00:42:44I don't know if that's Dokes' blood though
00:42:46No, it's been popping up
00:42:48It's been popping up
00:42:49It may start to crack up a little bit
00:42:51It is not significant this time
00:42:54But Dokes is still there
00:42:55Tired as he is
00:42:56And whipped as he is this round
00:42:58He is still there
00:42:59And he's got enough guts
00:43:01To hide his feelings from Holyfield
00:43:06There he is coming back with more
00:43:07And nothing on those punches
00:43:09But he is punching
00:43:10Making Holyfield stop
00:43:13Dokes is not favored
00:43:14Even though he's the champion
00:43:16But he and his manager Marty Kona
00:43:17Used to the long arms
00:43:19Punch on the left eyebrow
00:43:23Come on
00:43:27Go to Kona
00:43:34Come on
00:43:39Come on
00:43:43Come on
00:43:47Come on
00:43:52Over the left eye of Dokes
00:43:54Work your way out
00:43:55Let's go
00:44:02Hold on, it's changed
00:44:03There!
00:44:04Big shot by Holyfield
00:44:05Who opens up
00:44:06And Dokes remains on his feet
00:44:08I don't know how
00:44:09And that tape is still going
00:44:10It's going to give him another rest
00:44:12It's going to give him another rest
00:44:13The referee looks at it
00:44:14And decides not to step in
00:44:16I don't know why
00:44:17Because that tape can be dangerous
00:44:18Dokes taking unbelievable punishment
00:44:23Major league punishment from
00:44:26There's the timeout again
00:44:27Major league punishment from
00:44:28Evander Holyfield
00:44:30But you've got to wonder
00:44:32Why Dokes is still standing
00:44:34And it has to make you wonder
00:44:35About the power of Holyfield's punches
00:44:37That's the grand old equation of boxing
00:44:39It's either one guy hasn't got that much punch
00:44:41Or the other guy's got a King Kong jaw
00:44:43In this case a little more
00:44:45Because Dokes has always been known
00:44:47To take a tremendous shot
00:44:49And Evander Holyfield
00:44:51Evander Holyfield
00:44:52Has knocked out the last three
00:44:54Ken Sanders, the manager of Holyfield
00:44:59Concern
00:45:00Concern is a small word
00:45:02In the face of Ken Sanders
00:45:04Should we go for one more?
00:45:06As you see the blood
00:45:08As Holyfield came right in
00:45:10After the tape was fixed on Dokes
00:45:12Well
00:45:13Holyfield landing with a short break
00:45:16There's another right by Holyfield
00:45:19A left by Holyfield
00:45:21Tagging Dokes who stays up
00:45:22And continues to throw punches
00:45:25Dokes is taking punches
00:45:27It's incredible
00:45:28No human being should stand out from that
00:45:30Those who wound up from left field
00:45:32From the parking lot
00:45:34What a round for Holyfield
00:45:37Incredible round
00:45:43And the big crowd here at
00:45:44Caesars Palace Sports Pavilion
00:45:47Saluting these two fighters
00:45:49And they go right to that cut
00:45:54Evander Holyfield with an assortment
00:45:56Of flurries in that seventh round
00:45:59Now let's take a look at one of them
00:46:05The thing about these punches
00:46:06Is that Holyfield is putting his whole body
00:46:08Turning his whole body into the punch
00:46:10Just like they teach you to do
00:46:11And it's landing
00:46:13Look at that shot to the body of Dokes
00:46:15Remember
00:46:16Fights back
00:46:17He's not just standing
00:46:18Look at that shot
00:46:19That's enough to drop anybody
00:46:20And a hook comes back
00:46:21And another right hand
00:46:22That's enough to drop people folks
00:46:23Those are heavyweight punches
00:46:25From big guys
00:46:26Winding up
00:46:35As we head into round 8
00:46:36Sketch 1 for 12
00:46:37Steve Albert and the Fight Doctor
00:46:39Bernie Pacheco in Las Vegas
00:46:41This has been
00:46:42A monstrous battle
00:46:44Holyfield in the blue
00:46:45Dokes in the white
00:46:47So Dokes is now battling back
00:46:49From a point...
00:46:50Oh look at Dokes go
00:46:53Michael Dokes
00:46:55Landing to the head of Holyfield
00:46:57Opening up the round
00:46:58To get a little respect from Holyfield
00:47:00To break up his attack
00:47:01Not wanting to stand there for a moment
00:47:03And receive more cannon shots
00:47:05He opened up
00:47:06In flurries
00:47:07That puts Evander in a different mood
00:47:11And Dokes was hitting him
00:47:12Working out
00:47:14Michael Dokes
00:47:15Predicted this would be a war
00:47:17And it's come to fruition
00:47:20He's fighting under disadvantages now
00:47:22First he has one point off
00:47:24Second
00:47:25He has got low lows
00:47:28Which will accumulate
00:47:30To the point where another point
00:47:31Can be taken off
00:47:32With no trouble
00:47:33Evander can get a hold of it
00:47:34By Holyfield
00:47:36And last but not least
00:47:37He's got a cut over there
00:47:39A lot of stuff to worry about
00:47:40While you're trying to take care
00:47:41Of this young kid
00:47:42Yet somehow surviving it all
00:47:44Beautiful
00:47:45Beautiful uppercut
00:47:46By Holyfield
00:47:47With no offense
00:47:49Again with that big round
00:47:50By Evander Holyfield
00:47:51I'd have him ahead 68 to 65
00:47:54Again unofficially
00:47:55This has been a ding dong battle
00:47:57Remember one of those rounds
00:47:58Could easily be a 10-8 round
00:48:00As they take a point away
00:48:01From Dokes
00:48:03Now Michael Dokes
00:48:05On the attack
00:48:09Dokes with a left
00:48:10But
00:48:11Holyfield may have blocked it
00:48:16Dokes senses something now perhaps
00:48:18Yeah Holyfield's not in the best shape
00:48:20Of his life just now
00:48:22Holyfield may be in some trouble
00:48:24Every time he gets him on the ropes
00:48:26That superior weight
00:48:27That pulling
00:48:28And pushing
00:48:29Takes a right hand
00:48:31A twisting right
00:48:32By Dokes
00:48:33A combination by Dokes
00:48:34Holyfield comes back with a left
00:48:37Holyfield coming back
00:48:38With everything he's got
00:48:40A lot of guts to Holyfield
00:48:41But he's been hammered
00:48:43He's throwing everything in those punches
00:48:46And they are landing
00:48:54What a round
00:48:56It doesn't seem possible
00:48:57The two heavyweights
00:48:58Could pound each other this way
00:49:00Without effect
00:49:01It's Dokes that's beginning to wear out
00:49:03But he's had a big lead in this round
00:49:08And a right by Holyfield
00:49:09Followed by a right by Dokes
00:49:11And then Dokes has had a step back
00:49:13A combination
00:49:14Holyfield throwing everything
00:49:16In his arsenal
00:49:21Final seconds of round 8
00:49:23What a round this has been
00:49:25It's all been Dokes at the beginning
00:49:27And then all Holyfield at the end
00:49:29Both men getting each other in trouble
00:49:31What a round
00:49:33What a great round
00:49:38The crowd is standing here at Caesars Palace
00:49:45A candidate for Round of the Year
00:49:47Get them out
00:49:49Holyfield
00:50:08Look at the punishments
00:50:09These two men are inflicting
00:50:10These are Dokes' big moments
00:50:11The first two minutes belong to Dokes
00:50:13And then
00:50:14If there was anybody in the audience
00:50:16That doubted Holyfield's heart and courage
00:50:17came back and took that last minute I gave that round to Doug very close again
00:50:21remember these these rounds are just see-sawing so close both men are landing
00:50:26effective punches both men are hurting each other and yet Holyfield still stands there
00:50:31nobody has ever questioned Michael Doug Carter but until this fight we didn't know what kind of gut Holyfield had
00:50:38well we'll learn
00:50:39look at the expression on the face of Holyfield as he came out
00:50:47as we begin round 9
00:50:49it is scheduled for 12
00:50:58can they pick up where they left off?
00:51:00it would seem unlikely
00:51:01how do you keep that pace going?
00:51:03you don't
00:51:04the answer is who's gonna wear out first
00:51:06and when you got a young strongman against an old strongman
00:51:09young only wins that equation
00:51:13and the inside fighting
00:51:16I'll tell you one thing right now
00:51:18both these men would give Tyson a good battle
00:51:21I mean both of them
00:51:22if they come in this kind of condition with this kind of heart
00:51:24it would be a very interesting bout
00:51:27with Mike Tyson
00:51:28boxing experts as you see Marty Cole the manager
00:51:31Michael Doakes in the lower left hand corner
00:51:34experts figure Tyson and Holyfield
00:51:37will be slow in developing
00:51:39or even Doakes and Tyson
00:51:42Tyson will probably milk his status at the top
00:51:44follow Don King's itinerary
00:51:46get some big paydays fighting tournament
00:51:48but eventually
00:51:49he will have to meet up with one of these two
00:51:52he can meet up with both of them
00:51:54at the way this fight is going
00:51:55you know when you have a fight like this
00:51:57there really are no losers
00:51:58because they both have proved
00:52:00that they are in championship contention
00:52:02and barring a knockout
00:52:04at the rate they're going
00:52:05either one or both
00:52:07could be lined up for Tyson
00:52:09that's the midway point round 9
00:52:11in the meantime we have had
00:52:13a peaceful round if you can call it
00:52:15Don King called it mayhem peaceful
00:52:17this has been a peaceful round compared to the other
00:52:19but they had to rest
00:52:21they have to rest
00:52:23perhaps the fighters are just looking for a second win
00:52:25to keep it going
00:52:27now Holyfield spins Doakes around
00:52:30you notice there have been precious few clinches
00:52:35oh big big breath from Doakes like saying
00:52:37whoa how much longer to the end of this round
00:52:41this cut taken good care of
00:52:42in the corner of Doakes
00:52:44is not a factor of their pleading
00:52:46it is not a good job by Tommy Gallagher
00:52:52both men are just wiling away this round
00:53:01which might mean we ain't seen nothing yet
00:53:04from 10 through 12
00:53:08under 30 seconds in the ninth
00:53:14a right by Holyfield
00:53:15but didn't seem to bother Doakes that much
00:53:18Doakes had just landed a couple of good shots himself
00:53:21so it sort of neutralized each other
00:53:33and that is it for the ninth round
00:53:38what a nice finish
00:53:41relatively speaking they cruised through that round
00:53:44I think they had to rest
00:53:46that's called a compulsive round
00:53:48because both guys were so exhausted
00:53:50from the feverish pace of the eighth round
00:53:53that they had to take it easy
00:53:55particularly those who seem to be wearing out on a faster clip
00:53:59than the younger and better conditioned
00:54:01Evander Holyfield
00:54:03but I'm impressed again
00:54:04I have to say it again
00:54:05I cannot begin to tell you
00:54:07that there was so much doubt
00:54:08about the heart of Holyfield
00:54:10he had all these easy fights
00:54:11yeah what happens when he gets in with the tough guy
00:54:13and he goes to round 6, 7 and 8
00:54:15well as far as I can see
00:54:17what's happening is
00:54:18we've proved once and for all
00:54:20that Evander Holyfield has got a truckload of guts
00:54:23I mean he hangs in there
00:54:24he doesn't quit and he's getting hammered
00:54:27on to round 10
00:54:28and these next three should be crucial
00:54:31and here we go
00:54:33some thunderous shots in this fight
00:54:35landed by both fighters
00:54:37Holyfield in the blue
00:54:38Dokes in the white
00:54:39there's another right by Holyfield
00:54:41that's landed
00:54:42and Dokes comes right back
00:54:47Holyfield is no doubt about it
00:54:49got his gas back in the tank
00:54:51and ready to go
00:54:52he's putting it in gear
00:54:53because he came out solid punching
00:54:55Dokes is still in slow motion
00:54:57he's got a lot of energy
00:55:00he is not eager to press forward
00:55:02against the bouncing Holyfield
00:55:06again this is somewhat reminiscent of
00:55:08the Holyfield-White Mojave-Tawoo fight
00:55:12when Holyfield stopped the former light heavyweight cruiserweight champ
00:55:15in the 4th round
00:55:22the legs
00:55:23the legs
00:55:24the weary legs of Michael Dokes
00:55:26can't get him there
00:55:27they just can't get him in the punching range
00:55:29and fight fans all over the world
00:55:31enjoying this action
00:55:32not only here in the United States
00:55:34but this broadcast going to 16 different
00:55:36foreign lands
00:55:38like England, France, Spain, Japan, Venezuela
00:55:41Australia, Austria, South Africa
00:55:43Holland, Thailand, Panama
00:55:45and on and on
00:55:48Dokes just wants to invite
00:55:50Holyfield to come into this parlour
00:55:52and stand still to punch there
00:55:54because he just doesn't have the legs
00:55:55to get away from him or to get to him
00:55:57it's got to be Holyfield's call
00:55:59to come in
00:56:00oh what a shot
00:56:02Dokes in trouble
00:56:03Dokes in big trouble
00:56:05Michael Dokes staggered
00:56:08but fighting back
00:56:09he's in a little cage
00:56:10and there he goes on the ropes
00:56:12Holyfield looks to finish him off
00:56:14Richard Steele steps in
00:56:15and Dokes coming towards us
00:56:16he's down
00:56:17he's out
00:56:18he's out
00:56:19it's over
00:56:21it's all over
00:56:22says Richard Steele
00:56:24Evander Holyfield has won
00:56:26here in the 10th round
00:56:29and that was
00:56:30inevitable
00:56:31but what a fight
00:56:32Michael Dokes put up
00:56:34it just seemed like
00:56:35he couldn't keep taking
00:56:36those heavy punishing blows
00:56:38now with his legs gone
00:56:40he had no way
00:56:41to absorb the punishment
00:56:42except fall on his face
00:56:44and of course
00:56:45he went down on the ropes
00:56:46and he's not
00:56:47fallen
00:56:48he will definitely be counted out
00:56:50and the referee was definitely
00:56:51had he not gotten him out
00:56:54he's not in any condition
00:56:55to go on
00:56:56so Holyfield answers
00:56:57quite a few questions
00:56:58has he got guts
00:56:59you bet
00:57:00can he punch
00:57:01you bet
00:57:02and has he got the courage
00:57:03to stay in there
00:57:04with a guy who's got
00:57:05the willpower of Michael Dokes
00:57:06you bet
00:57:07you bet
00:57:08you bet
00:57:10two courageous fighters
00:57:11being saluted here
00:57:12by this capacity crowd
00:57:14at Caesars Palace
00:57:15Michael Dokes
00:57:17KO'd here in the 10th
00:57:18by Evander Holyfield
00:57:23who is now 3-0
00:57:24as a heavyweight
00:57:25and proving that he does
00:57:26have knockout power
00:57:29here's the set up punch
00:57:30it's coming up
00:57:31and that's the one
00:57:32that did the damage
00:57:33it's sort of a left
00:57:34uppercut
00:57:35a cross between
00:57:36an uppercut and a hook
00:57:37and it was all over Dokes
00:57:38it was just
00:57:39window dressing
00:57:40after that
00:57:41but even so
00:57:42even so
00:57:43Dokes fought back
00:57:44I mean
00:57:45where in that
00:57:46massive chest cavity
00:57:47can you find a heart
00:57:48as big as Dokes
00:57:49even so
00:57:50he was fighting back
00:57:51no legs
00:57:52nothing to absorb
00:57:53the punch
00:57:54and he was finished
00:57:55you see him
00:57:56he's gone
00:57:57and of course
00:57:58needless to say
00:57:59the referee over
00:58:00in a minute
00:58:01so was his corner
00:58:02no problem
00:58:03stopping the fight
00:58:04watch this shot
00:58:05that is just
00:58:06absolutely a beautiful hook
00:58:07the effects
00:58:08have been building up
00:58:09all night long
00:58:11as Holyfield
00:58:12reigned
00:58:13punch after punch
00:58:14on the durable
00:58:15Dokes
00:58:16who took a long time
00:58:17in leaving
00:58:18a dramatic conclusion
00:58:22to an incredible fight
00:58:24and I have to come back
00:58:25to the thought
00:58:26Steve
00:58:27that
00:58:28off of this fight
00:58:29Dokes has lost nothing
00:58:30he has gained
00:58:31stature as an opponent
00:58:32if he goes back
00:58:33and wins a couple
00:58:34good fights
00:58:35he is in
00:58:36position to fight Tyson
00:58:37I know that
00:58:38sounds ridiculous
00:58:39when a guy gets
00:58:40knocked out
00:58:41but it's not
00:58:42given the dirt
00:58:43Chuck Holm
00:58:44in the center of the ring
00:58:45has the official word
00:58:46ladies and gentlemen
00:58:48the time
00:58:50one minute
00:58:51forty one
00:58:52seconds
00:58:53on the tenth round
00:58:55the winner by a TKO
00:58:56and new
00:58:57Continental America's
00:58:58heavyweight champion
00:59:00The Avenger
00:59:01Holyfield
00:59:08being hugged by
00:59:09Ryder Lodova
00:59:10gets his first
00:59:11heavyweight title
00:59:16the crowd
00:59:17cheers him
00:59:19as he lifts
00:59:20his record
00:59:21to 21 and 0
00:59:22with 17 knockouts
00:59:25what a display
00:59:26by Holyfield
00:59:27and of course
00:59:28the same
00:59:29for Michael Dokes
00:59:32Holyfield was favored
00:59:33but he was
00:59:34the challenger
00:59:37and he is
00:59:38the new WBC
00:59:39Continental America's
00:59:40heavyweight champion
00:59:43and he is going
00:59:44to feel it
00:59:45in the morning
00:59:49he took some lumps
00:59:53he earned this victory
00:59:54without question
00:59:56Michael Dokes
00:59:58only his second
00:59:59professional defeat
01:00:0237-2
01:00:04and 2 now
01:00:07and his first loss
01:00:08in 9 fights
01:00:09since the comeback
01:00:10from cocaine rehabilitation
01:00:14let's go up to
01:00:15Bernie Pacheco
01:00:16on the ring
01:00:19I don't think you could
01:00:20expect any bigger
01:00:21fight than that
01:00:22from anybody
01:00:23what a heart
01:00:24on Dokes
01:00:25what a heart on you
01:00:26was that one of the
01:00:27toughest fights you've
01:00:28ever had?
01:00:29first of all
01:00:30I can thank God
01:00:31for my health and strength
01:00:32and will to win
01:00:33and thank him for
01:00:34everything
01:00:35was it the toughest
01:00:36fight you've had?
01:00:37yes it was
01:00:38Dokes proved
01:00:39proved a lot
01:00:40I figure if I go out
01:00:41there and make him
01:00:42spend a lot of
01:00:43punches in every
01:00:44round that he
01:00:45wouldn't be strong
01:00:46but he was strong
01:00:47did he fly all those
01:00:48low blows in the
01:00:49early part of the
01:00:50round?
01:00:51yes he was taking
01:00:52a lot of steam out
01:00:53of me
01:00:54he hit me low
01:00:55he hit me on the
01:00:56hip and he was
01:00:57just constantly
01:00:58breaking my rhythm
01:00:59it was hard for me
01:01:00to get my rhythm
01:01:01because
01:01:02when he fought
01:01:03along the ropes
01:01:04and he pushed
01:01:05you along the
01:01:06ropes he seemed
01:01:07to get the better
01:01:08of you
01:01:09there were rounds
01:01:10there when his
01:01:11strength was so
01:01:12evident he was
01:01:13so much bigger
01:01:14than you were
01:01:15I wouldn't
01:01:16have been able
