00:03CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:34I read a touching article the other day, Rachel,
00:36about an elderly gentleman called Neville Croucher.
00:39He had been a World War II fighter pilot.
00:42He had spent incredibly, actually, 800 hours in the cockpit of his Hurricane.
00:48And 800 hours flying combat in the Second World War in a fighter
00:52was quite something, actually. Not many people made that.
00:55But it had always been his dream to fly a Spitfire.
00:59And, of course, the two great Battle of Britain aircraft in the RAF
01:03were the Hurricane and the Spitfire.
01:05But he always wanted to fly a Spitfire.
01:07At the age of 91, not so very long ago, he happened to be down in Kent
01:11at the Headcorn Airdrome watching Spitfires fly, looking out longingly,
01:16and then somebody came and tapped him on the shoulder and said,
01:19if we've got a surprise for you, we're taking you up.
01:21So, at the age of 91, he flew in a Spitfire and did the loop-the-loop.
01:25Isn't that a wonderful, wonderful story?
01:27So, good on you, Neville.
01:29And it reminded me, actually, because Catherine's beloved father
01:34was a Spitfire pilot in the war.
01:36And when he passed away a few years ago, we thought,
01:38what should we do to mark this?
01:40So we hired a Spitfire to fly over the house and do the victory rolls.
01:46Wonderful. Not a dry eye in the house. It was fantastic.
01:49Very nice.
01:50Wonderful story, yeah. Great story.
01:52But who have we got with us?
01:53We've got Farhan Ahmed.
01:55Two good wins, going for a third one today. Well done.
01:58And you've completed a 100-kilometre trek across the Yorkshire Dales
02:02in 30 hours.
02:04Yeah, it was great. It was a charity event.
02:07Good for you.
02:08Like, part of the issue was just the hills, going up and going down.
02:12But looking back, it was really beautiful, because what they did
02:15was they actually lit the path at night with glowsticks,
02:19so you could actually kind of see in the mountains and the hills
02:22this kind of luminous light, which kind of guided you.
02:26And which charity were you...?
02:28That was Logstan.
02:29Excellent. Well done. Good for you.
02:31And you're joined today by Michelle Lennox,
02:33lives in Glasgow, is a mobile librarian.
02:36So have you got one of those wonderful vehicles you drive to the villages?
02:39Yes, I have a big pink bus that I drive with.
02:43Are you a popular visitor, then? You've got people waiting for you?
02:47Oh, yes, we have queues.
02:48And children as well as...?
02:50Children, old people, basically anybody that's sort of socially excluded
02:56due to geography.
02:58Well, good for you. Excellent stuff.
03:00Well, good luck today, Michelle.
03:02You're up against a pretty good competitor over there in Fahan.
03:05So let's have a big round of applause for both of our Countdown contestants.
03:09APPLAUSE
03:12And Susie's back, having had, I trust, a peaceful weekend.

03:23and, of course, the one and only Eclairius tour operator.
03:29That's me.
03:30Yep. Excellent stuff.
03:32We'll be talking a little bit more about that now in a few minutes.
03:35But now, Fahan, let's take it away with a letters game, shall we?

08:34Oh, I'm sorry.
08:35That's OK.

10:38I got one less with faggots,
10:40by which I mean those peculiar meaty, bally things.
10:43What are they?
10:45Yeah, balls or rolls of seasoned chopped liver,
10:48baked or fried.
10:49Oh!
10:50Nice?
10:51Not really.
10:53Faggot, is it the same spelling also for kindling?
10:56Yes, it absolutely is.
10:58Or it can also be a bundle of iron rods bound together for welding
11:02and hammering into bars.
11:03Really?
11:04Yes.
11:05Faggot.
11:0632 to Michelle's eight.
11:08Well done.
11:09Off the blocks there.
11:10Fahan, your letters game.

12:21Fahan?
12:22Torque.
12:23Torque. And Michelle?
12:24Quarter.
12:26Both absolutely fine.
12:27Torque.
12:28We often talk about the torque of engines.
12:30It comes up on Countdown quite a lot.
12:32And I'm pretty sure you can be a quarter.
12:35Or can you?
12:36It's not there, Michelle.
12:37You're in really bad luck today.
12:39I really thought that one might be, so that's very unlucky.
12:42Sorry.
12:43Bad luck.
12:44But what else can we have, Jenny or Claire?
12:47Well, if you want to do very badly, you can go for Quorn.
12:50Yes.
12:51But would that be a capital Q?
12:52That would be a capital Q.
12:53Sorry, can't even have that.
12:54Throne, then.
12:55As in, I've thrown a stone.
12:57OK.
12:58T-H-R-O-W-N.
13:00Yeah, the other throne's there as well, the one you sit on.
13:02Yeah.
13:03And Hunter.
13:04But lots of sixes, couldn't get beyond.
13:06Not too much.

13:10And, Michelle?
13:11Your chance with a numbers game.

13:17Thank you, Michelle.
13:18One large one, five more little ones.
13:20And this time, the little numbers are 5, 2, 2, 8 and 6,
13:27and the large one, 50 again.
13:29And the target, 692.
13:326-9-2.
13:45MUSIC PLAYS
14:04Yes, Michelle?
14:06Erm...
14:076-9...
14:096?
14:116-9-6. How about for Han?
14:136-9-2.
14:14Come on, then.
14:158 plus 6?
14:168 plus 6 is 14.
14:18Times 50?
14:19Times 50 is 700.
14:215 times 2 is 10?
14:23Yep.
14:24Erm, minus that for 690?
14:27Yep.
14:28And the other two, 692, lovely.
14:30Sweetly done, well done.
14:32Very good.
14:36And now it's time to talk to Jenny Eclair.
14:39Jenny.
14:40Yes.
14:41Travelling all around this country, and indeed...
14:43Travelling all over the world.
14:45I'm blessed.
14:46Tell us a story.
14:47Well, erm, the thing is, you know,
14:49last time I told you a story, it was about trying to look presentable.
14:52And I do, I do try my hardest,
14:55especially when, you know, you're going global.
14:57And, erm, last year I was doing the Melbourne Comedy Festival,
15:02and I thought, come on, Jenny, make an effort.
15:04You know, try and blend in with the beautiful Australian women.
15:08So I thought, well, I'll fake tan up, that's what I'll do.
15:11I'll look all glossy-limbed.
15:12I'll look like Rachel, like that.
15:14I'll look like that, but I'll get it out of a bottle.
15:16I'll cheat.
15:17So the night before I was flying to Australia,
15:19I slathered it all on, slathered it all on.
15:22But, you know, I'm old.
15:23I'm quite old.
15:24I'm quite forgetful.
15:25I forget how many limbs I've got.
15:28You've got two arms and two legs.
15:30It's right where you come in with the maths.
15:32You're very good.
15:33I'm not very good.
15:34I forgot an entire leg.
15:37I woke up the next day and I looked down.
15:39I thought, something has gone terribly wrong here.
15:42Brown, brown, brown, brown, right.
15:45Look at this white left leg.
15:47It was like a milk bottle.
15:50So I had to try and quickly rectify.
15:52But some people do take their fake tanning very seriously.
15:54You know, if you want to do it properly,
15:56you've got to think about your fake peeling, haven't you?
15:58Yes.
15:59You know, if you're really going to con people into thinking
16:01that you've got to tan.
16:02So what you do if you want to do fake peeling,
16:04you loosely attach phyllo pastry to your shoulders.
16:07You shake and flake.
16:08That's what you do.
16:10So I did that.
16:12I didn't really.
16:14But I had to disguise the leg.
16:17It was one of those moments where you think,
16:19I'm getting too old and dotty to even fake tan.
16:23Lovely, lovely, lovely story.
16:25Incidentally, I might just tell you
16:27that Rachel has just actually returned from the south of France.
16:30There's nothing fake about that fabulous tan there.
16:33I know.
16:34I know.
16:35It's dismaying.
16:37Because there's not a line, there's not a crease,
16:39there's not an orange hand.
16:41All the giveaways for the fake tan.
16:43It's the web, isn't it?
16:44Yes.
16:45I've got it there.
16:47Yes, no, that's real.
16:49It's very upsetting.
16:50And she's glossed it up as well a bit with some coconut butter.
16:53Perfect.
16:54Oh, well.
16:55There we go.
16:56Now then, Farhan, 48 points.
16:57Michelle, she's off the blocks.
16:59And it's Farhan to go for a letters game.
17:02Consonant, please.

18:11Locates.
18:12Locates.
18:14Happy enough?
18:15Very happy.
18:16What else have we got there?
18:17Susie, Jenny?
18:18I'll tell you about etalons.
18:20It's a term from physics.
18:21Devices consisting of two reflecting plates
18:23and they produce interfering light beams.
18:27There we are.
18:28And Jenny?
18:29I've got console.
18:30You can console somebody.
18:32A console table.
18:34Is that spelt the same way or is that different?
18:37Do you know?
18:38I don't know the answer to that.
18:40She doesn't know the answer to that.
18:42Did you hear that?
18:43She doesn't know.
18:44Same.
18:45Same way.
18:46So I've got one word with two meanings.
18:48Excellent.
18:49And there's an eight there.
18:51A slightly technical one.
18:53It's from chemistry.
18:54Lactones.
18:55Lactones.
18:56A slightly technical one.
18:57It's from chemistry.
18:58Lactones.
18:59And they're organic compounds containing an ester group OCO,
19:03with two dashes on either side.
19:05Apologies to chemists.
19:06As part of a ring.
19:08Heavens.
19:10Well done.
19:12Very good.
19:13So, Michelle, 15 points for Han on 55.
19:15And it's Michelle's letters game.

20:41Gang of grannies, yes.
20:42Quite a few eights, actually, in that one.

24:13Holler.
24:14One more holler, well done.
24:16Susie.
24:17No, I was hollering as well.
24:18It's related to halloo, which was used to incite dogs to the chase during a hunt.
24:23Really?
24:24It's original use.
24:25Anything to do with hullabaloo, then?
24:27No, hullabaloo, I think, is probably just onomatopoeic.
24:30I would check that one for you.
24:35Ah, 79 points plays 21, and it's for Han's letters game.
24:40For Han.

26:03I see Jenny's looking confident there.
26:07No, I'm not at all. I've got droner.
26:09I don't even know whether you're allowed to be a droner.
26:12I think drone on, but does that make me a droner?
26:15No, I think it just makes you a drone.
26:17Oh.
26:20Thank you, Susie.
26:21Sorry.
26:23Yeah, recorded is excellent.
26:25Seven's otherwise.
26:26Decryer, cornered, that sort of thing.
26:28But that was brilliant.
26:29Thank you. All right.
26:31Thanks, Jenny.
26:3287 plays 29.
26:33But now it's Susie's time.
26:35Susie's particular...
26:37particular spot.
26:39What have you got for us today?
26:41Well, Nick, next time you eat a jumbo sausage,
26:44spare a thought for probably the most famous elephant in the world, jumbo.
26:48And a lot of us know that story.
26:50The word jumbo goes all the way back to Mumbo Jumbo.
26:54And the original Mumbo Jumbo was an African...
26:57It was a masked figure, really, that took part in religious ceremonies
27:01amongst the Mandingo people, and they were in Western Africa.
27:06And over time, it became...
27:08It began to mean a language that was based on superstition,
27:11and hence it was sort of slightly unintelligible,
27:13which is why we talk about Mumbo Jumbo today.
27:15But the first jumbo was a dull-witted, slightly foolish person.
27:19And, of course, it sort of became incredibly famous
27:22and burst onto the scene with the African elephant jumbo,
27:25who was born in the 1860s.
27:27He was four metres tall.
27:29People absolutely flocked to see him.
27:31And with an eye for a good deal and also spectacle,
27:35circus owner P.T. Barnum bought Jumbo
27:38for the equivalent of a quarter of a million dollars,
27:40shipped him to the US,
27:42and basically toured him all across America and beyond.
27:45But very sadly, while being displayed in Canada,
27:48Jumbo was killed. He was hit by a train.
27:51But still, Barnum had an eye for the money,
27:54and he saw a chance to earn even more
27:56by offering people a chance to see a dead elephant.
27:58So he stuffed Jumbo's huge hide, awful, and put him on display,
28:02which, of course, further spread the elephant's fame.
28:04And it secured Jumbo, as a word in our language,
28:07as you would expect, for something large of its kind.
28:10And, of course, it was then made very popular by Dumbo,
28:13the poor Disney elephant.
28:15But Jumbo goes all the way back, originally,
28:17to mumbo jumbo and superstition.
28:19Now, when I eat a jumbo sausage, I'm going to put it in my mouth,
28:22and it's going to taste of dead elephant.
28:25You've spoilt that for me now.
28:27Jumbo. There we are.
