00:00Okay lads, when I say stop, you stop boxing. When I say break, take a step back. Keep your hands up, protect yourself all the time. Good luck to you both, good luck.
00:11So Lee Everett the referee, this is the ninth fight for the unbeaten Irishman Stephen Cairns, but just the second time that he's fought under Frank Warren's Queensbury banner, having debuted for them in Belfast in June, with an impressive first round stoppage.
00:26And I would just suggest you keep your eyes on it, four wins in the first round and five in the first two rounds for Stephen Cairns.
00:35Gregorios though has only been stopped twice, they've come though in his last four fights and he is on a bit of a losing run himself, but he's another explosive fighter that we can enjoy tonight Richie Stephen Cairns.
00:46Most certainly he starts quickly, he's got a lot of skills and decent power as Lee Cairns, against an opponent who is fairly tough, he's only been stopped twice in the 15 defeats that he's had, so it'll be interesting to see how Cairns goes about this one.
01:04He comes into the contest full of confidence, 8-0 up to now remember, boxing very well indeed, but he's got decent power flex but I also like the skill element about this Stephen Cairns, he's very good indeed.
01:17The difference between the two is the tattoo on the arm for Stephen Cairns and the gold on the white trunks.
01:26So five stoppages in eight victories for the man from Cork who's still only 22, just the three wins for Gregorios who's based in Spain these days but he hails from Argentina, 15 losses in his 18 fights to this point.
01:42Sensible start up to now from Cairns, just working away with his jab, measuring the distance and gap and just getting into a rhythm behind that lead hand and just assessing that distance there and then he moves in, bit of an injection of pace there but it's all to do with that lead hand first flex to set things up.
02:12Just made Gregorios scamper across the ring, just showed a little bit of quality there did Cairns because Gregorios has come forward but he just adjusted his feet a little bit did Cairns just to maintain the gap.
02:36That's what he did there, so Gregorios is struggling here at Fletch, way off target with that shot there and again Cairns just measuring the distance with the lead hand setting up the backhand and the bigger punch.
02:52That already looks quite a difference in class between the two of them, doesn't it?
02:57Absolutely.
02:5830 seconds or so to go in the first round and Cairns has got his measure to this point.
03:03Just taking his time and being patient, setting things up, that's what Cairns is doing and Gregorios I think he knows he's in with quality opponents here because he's all over the place, especially with his feet.
03:33A little smile on the face of Stephen Cairns who enjoyed the first round.
04:04Lottoland Casino sponsors boxing on TNT sports.
04:11A little bit lower, chin drops as well.
04:15And then when you throw, hold yourself up high, that's what you've got to see.
04:19When you know what you want to throw, hit yourself, handcuff yourself and then right away.
04:24You don't want that one shot.
04:40He goes home at the weekends and he's boxing in London, Stephen Cairns for the first time tonight, having had his first eight fights in six different countries, Richard.
04:48The last three in Uzbekistan, Denmark and then Belfast in June.
04:52He's travelling around a bit.
04:54Indeed.
04:55Which is good experience, isn't it?
04:57At the end of the day.
04:58And he's coming.
05:03He started really well, I think here, Cairns.
05:05It's a sensible approach.
05:07He's just getting into his rhythm now, Stephen Cairns.
05:11And Gregorios, he's all over the place here, Fletch and he's coming undone.
05:17Starting the attack there from too far out and he's going to get punished here.
05:20We've got the punch stats on our screen and they told us at the end of the first round that Gregorios hadn't landed a single punch.
05:27No.
05:34It seems at the moment when Stephen Cairns wants to raise the pace and make this really interesting.
05:39Exactly.
05:40Gregorios can't get close enough.
05:42He tried to land that right hand there from too far out, misses the target and gets punished.
05:47Cairns, on the other hand, sensible approach, using his jab, measuring the distance and gap to set up his backhand.
05:55It's like they're in a different league, these two, at the moment.
06:08Gregorios is probably making these types of mistakes, starting from too far out.
06:13Probably in the past he hasn't been punished, but here he's in against a very well-skilled operator in Stephen Cairns.
06:20Who's punishing him for everything, all the mistakes that he's making.
06:24Then he's just exposing him, really.
06:27Gregorios, to this point, has had no real desire to throw punches.
06:32It's all been around trying to smother the work of Stephen Cairns and keep him off.
06:42Into the final minute of the second round, this one scheduled for six, it's super lightweight.
06:47Just got to pick your shots here now, Fletch.
06:50I think the signs are there from Gregorios that he's struggling.
06:54He's been outclassed here, so he's just landing the right shot and setting it up, really.
07:09Decent body shot from Cairns, probably the most solid shot that he's landed so far.
07:14Another one whipped in as well, you heard that.
07:17Just above us, wasn't it, Fletch?
07:19You certainly did hear it.
07:21Almost felt that one.
07:29Just started to raise the tempo towards the end of the second here.
07:32Stephen Cairns, when he started to get a feel for it and just find his range.
07:36And that's a good end to the round for the Irishman.

08:14Welcome back to your call.
08:17Instructions for Stephen Cairns from Dave Caldwell.
08:21But the bulk of it, which he centred around,
08:23the fact that he's bending over at the waist, Gregorios.
08:26And I think Dave Caldwell would like to see him take a step back
08:29and use uppercuts and those kind of shots to get more leverage.
08:32Yes, I agree.
08:34And just basically maintain the gap and don't let Gregorios hold on the inside.
08:39Gregorios hold on the inside.
08:41I think what Stephen Cairns needs to do now,
08:43he's probably just stepping up a little bit, go through the gears,
08:46double up the attacks and start throwing threes and fours
08:49rather than the single shots and trying to land that one big one.
08:52I think this fellow is going to come undone anyway.
08:54He's been totally outclassed.
08:56He looks out of his depth in there, does Gregorios.
08:59So it's all about now just stepping up, going through the gears.
09:02But maintaining the gap is really, really important now.
09:05And that lead hand comes into play again.
09:07There's the shot there.
09:09And that's what he's got to do, just get into a rhythm behind that
09:12and then step it up with threes and fours and take the guy out.
09:15Statistically speaking, he's still only landed three punches, Gregorios.
09:20And it's interesting listening to what Carl and Steve have been saying
09:24between rounds about the way that journeymen go about it,
09:27the way that opponents go about it.
09:29We've seen Martinez come tonight and have a real go.
09:32We saw Acampo looking to frustrate Christian Fetty in the previous fight.
09:36But the way that Gregorios has gone about it here against Stephen Cairns
09:41has been very little ambition in there.
09:43Very little ambition at all, I think, from him.
09:46But everything he has tried, he's been punished for when he's made mistakes.
09:50And again, it's just a matter of time.
09:53The only problem for Cairns maybe could be because Gregorios is moving away
09:57from him all the time and won't come onto the shots.
10:00But nevertheless, it's up to Cairns now to go through the gears
10:04and start throwing threes and fours and concentrate on accuracy.
10:08And there, that's much better. Right on cue.
10:14Halfway through the third.
10:20Put him in the category of a frustrating opponent, wouldn't you,
10:23Ezequiel Gregorios, to this point.
10:25He's done an awkward style, smothering Stephen Cairns whenever he can,
10:29making it difficult to land a really solid telling punch on him
10:32to really turn things in his favour.
10:35Spending the entire fight going backwards.
10:39And there's that left hook to the body.
10:41But I'd like to see that right hook come into play as well.
10:43Keeps dipping his head, Gregorios.
10:47So he's just got to start using that right hook a little bit more.
10:50There it is there.
10:52A little decent shot.
10:54Good left hand. Just got the nod of appreciation from Gregorios.
10:58Landed sharply by Cairns.
11:0130 seconds to go in the third.
11:07I don't think it would take too much of an attack from Cairns
11:10to really discourage Gregorios, Richard, do you?
11:12No, that's what I mean.
11:13Sustain the pressure and double up the attacks
11:15and just go through the gears.
11:17Start putting the shots together in threes and fours.
11:20And that would really then ask some questions of his opponent.
11:24And also the referee may then feel obliged to step in.
11:27And started to throw those uppercuts as well
11:29that Dave Caldwell was asking for between rounds.
11:32Having success doing so.
11:36And that's another straightforward round in there for Stephen Cairns.
11:45Think of good work again from Cairns there.
11:48Sharp right hand on the inside.
11:50This is where he's setting up his attacks with his jab.
11:53Little short right hand on the inside there.
11:55Just misses with the left hook.
11:58Gregorios is fairly tough.
12:01It's caught there with a couple of punches on the inside.
12:05But it's all Cairns, isn't it?
12:07We need now to see him go through the gears a little bit more.
12:11And listen to his coach.
12:13One thing you do see when you see those replays
12:15is how difficult it is to catch clean.
12:17Yeah, absolutely.
12:26Keep going downstairs.
12:33The last win for Gregorios, by the way, was back in December 2021.
12:37Campbell Hatton and Michael Gomez Jr. have both beaten him.
12:41They actually took a couple of rounds off Gomez
12:43when they fought in Bolton back in 2022.
12:50Three to go here.
12:52Super lightweight.
12:53One-way traffic for Stephen Cairns up to now.
13:01Decent jabs again from Cairns.
13:10Gregorios, as soon as he starts an attack,
13:13he gets punished, doesn't he, from Cairns,
13:16who's just waiting to pounce, literally.
13:23I just wanted to see him step it up in terms of the work rate.
13:26Tempo fletch.
13:29Oh, that was a nice shot downstairs.
13:54Pretty clear, if he bends over, don't hit him,
13:56and if you do, I'll send you out.
14:02I'm glad that Levery's done that, though, Rich,
14:04that he's gone across to the other corner and said,
14:06look, that's enough from you as well, bending over all the time.
14:08Yeah, bending over all the time.
14:09Just a little bit of frustration, I think, from Cairns there.
14:13But maybe that right uppercut should be brought into play a little bit more...
14:19From Cairns, most certainly.
14:21But again, Gregorios is proving awkward, isn't he?
14:24But it's that uppercut, I think, that's needed here more than anything.
14:28And then finishing on the left hook also.
14:31There you go.
14:34Mystic Richie tonight, everything he says happens in an instant.
14:49It hasn't been too much work to the body overall from Stephen Cairns,
14:53but when he has thrown the body shots, Richie, they've had an impact.
14:57They have indeed.
14:58And they're the ones that will definitely have more of an impact, I think.
15:04Especially if it's thrown and he's not waiting for it or not expecting it.
15:09That's why they just work to the head a little bit more
15:12and try and bring the hands up and then whip one downstairs
15:15underneath that right elbow especially.
15:19With that left hook.
15:21And he seems to be just expecting them now,
15:23and that's why you can see he actually took his elbows in.
15:27He knows they're coming.
15:28So you've got to take the attention away from that shot now
15:31and maybe concentrate a little bit more on the head
15:33to try and bring those elbows up a little bit.
15:37Closing stages here with a fourth cuffing shot there from Stephen Cairns.
15:52That body shot again behind the elbow,
15:54left hook as well to finish off the combination.
16:00Well, some people are going to say,
16:03Well, Sam Noakes is top of the bill tonight.
16:05His brother Sean is here as well, and he's with Danny Jamieson.
16:10Sean, big night for the Noakes family.
16:12You've been seeing Sam this week and today.
16:14How's it feeling?
16:15He looks incredible.
16:16He looks better today than he did yesterday anyway.
16:18What are you expecting from him tonight?
16:19I reckon you're going to see a career-best performance from him.
16:21The way he's been sparring apparently in the gym has been phenomenal.
16:24And he's hungry now.
16:25He's knocking on the door a world title.
16:26So he's here to make a statement tonight.
16:28So I reckon he gets some out of there.
16:30Nice prediction.
16:31Now, for you, you've obviously recently won a belt yourself.
16:34When can we next expect to see you in the ring?
16:36What's the plans?
16:37I don't actually know yet.
16:38I've been told November roughly.
16:39So we're looking towards that date.
16:41So I'll be ready anyway, whenever they tell me to.
16:43Looking forward to it.
16:44Thanks.
16:45Thank you very much.
16:46So that's Sean Noakes chatting to Danny,
16:48expecting a career-best performance from his brother Sam,
16:51top of the bill tonight.
16:52And I just wonder, Rich, how much he took from his previous fight
16:56against Ibanez.
16:57We were here.
16:58Great learning fight for him.
16:5912 rounds.
17:00He was very, very good that night.
17:02And that's going to kick him on.
17:03Absolutely.
17:04He'll have learned so much from that fight.
17:06And obviously, you know, he's on the verge of a world title fight.
17:09So he'll want to look good tonight.
17:11And I think you'll take that experience from that Mendy fight
17:14into this one.
17:15And I'm expecting an explosive display from him tonight.
17:19It's up against Gianluca Sheglia,
17:21who's challenging for a European title for the second time.
17:26Before that, we've got Masoud Abdullah against George Stewart,
17:29two unbeaten men for the vacant Commonwealth featherweight title.
17:32That's next.
17:33And the conclusion of this fight between Stephen Kearns from Cork,
17:36the 22-year-old, and Ezequiel Gregores of Argentina.
17:44Well, you can see, Flex, why he's only been stopped twice, Gregores.
17:49He's fairly tough, isn't he?
17:51And he's difficult.
17:52I think once he knew that Kearns can hit a little bit,
17:55he's on that back foot.
17:56He's always moving away.
17:57Then he's hard to nail.
17:59Sometimes his head is all over the place.
18:01His footwork is all over the place also.
18:05So, yeah, he's a really awkward customer and a difficult man
18:09to actually get a real clean hard shot on
18:12because of that unorthodox movement.
18:15And that, you know, his head is all over the place.
18:19I think that's the perfect description.
18:21I'm not sure half the time he knows what his movements are himself.
18:24He's very, very unorthodox in there.
18:28The clean shots that Kearns has landed have all been body punches,
18:31haven't they?
18:32He's not really caught him clean to the head, I don't think.
18:34Not with a really impactful one.
18:37Whether he can set up a finishing attack via the body,
18:40we'll wait and see.
18:42A little bit more than a minute to go in the penultimate round here.
18:46Every round has followed a familiar pattern.
18:48Yes, it's been one-way traffic.
18:50And you can see that probably Kearns now,
18:53occasionally you can see a little bit of frustration creeping in.
18:56That's when you've just got to revert back to your boxing
18:58and just up the tempo.
19:00And sometimes you'll meet an opponent
19:02who just takes everything single shots,
19:04and that's when you've got to go through the gear.
19:06This is a little bit better.
19:07That's a better shot.
19:08Yeah, that's one of the cleaner head shots,
19:10this one.
19:11This is a little bit better.
19:12That's a better shot.
19:13Yeah, that's one of the cleaner head shots
19:15that we've seen from Kearns.
19:19Just looking at the punch stats,
19:20he's still only landed 14 punches, Gregorios.
19:27Survival mission indeed for him.
19:29And again, look, there's an example there.
19:31Really low head, comes up with the uppercut and left hook.
19:36Just a difficult man to nail.
19:38Shots are coming towards Kearns
19:40from all kinds of outrageous angles,
19:42and then when he misses, he just smiles to himself.
19:45Gregorios, final few seconds here of the fifth.
19:48Come on!
20:06One of those nights, Richie,
20:07where you get the win and move on.
20:09I mean, Stephen Kearns won't want to see
20:11too many more opponents who go about it
20:13like Gregorios has tonight.
20:15So frustrating for him.
20:18Yeah, frustrating,
20:19though he's not with the contest, remember.
20:38So there's Massoud Abdullah.
20:41Final pad work for him.
20:44Won all ten fights,
20:45making Commonwealth featherweight title on the line tonight
20:48against a man from Inverness, 22-year-old George Stewart.
20:53He's unbeaten himself.
21:00I tell you what would be fascinating after this,
21:02listening to the Dave Caldwell debrief
21:04when they go through the fight,
21:06in terms of what he learns from a night like this.
21:09Yeah, exactly.
21:10They'll obviously go back to the gym
21:12and they'll work on it.
21:14Like I've said,
21:15occasionally you meet opponents like this
21:17where you're hitting with big shots
21:18and they've just come through it
21:20and it gets a little bit frustrating there.
21:23I just think,
21:24we've said it earlier on, didn't we,
21:26I think it's been volume of punches
21:28that probably would have been better
21:31as the contest has gone on.
21:33He's concentrated mainly on those single shots downstairs.
21:36But this fella's fairly tough.
21:38There's another one there, look.
21:42I think the credit to Cairns at this point
21:44is he's stuck at it, hasn't he?
21:45Stuck to the game plan.
21:46He's done what he needs to do.
21:47He's never really shown any frustration himself.
21:49He's just gone about his work in a very businesslike way.
21:52Yeah, absolutely, yeah.
22:04And, Fletch, you learn from these type of contests,
22:06boxers who move away from you constantly.
22:10You know, it's a different approach then.
22:12You've got to try and get them to come over the front foot.
22:14When they do, you've got to meet them head on.
22:18So it's certainly a learning contest,
22:20this is for young Stephen Cairns.
22:40And obviously Cairns boxes out of Ireland, Fletch.
22:45But on the British scene,
22:46there could be some real good fights,
22:48big fights down the road.
22:51The Jack Captors of this world,
22:53the Dalton Smiths,
22:55and O'Hara Davis, Prince Batalas,
22:57there's some real good fighters.
22:58Josh Taylor, of course.
22:59Gregorios is calling him in.
23:01Stephen Cairns obliges with a solid left hand,
23:03but Gregorios can't do it.
23:05He's calling him in.
23:06Stephen Cairns obliges with a solid left hand,
23:08but Gregorios said, I'm okay.
23:11I'll have a little bit more.
23:13Less than a minute to go in the final round,
23:15a little shake of the head
23:16from the tough man from Argentina.
23:24He's starting to get his work together now better,
23:26Stephen Cairns.
23:33A lot of quality in his work,
23:34you know, he's been well schooled,
23:35you can see that.
23:36He's got excellent technique.
23:41Just caught him on the top of the head there,
23:42but he's able to escape the corner.
23:44He's still only landed 17 punches in the fight,
23:46the Argentine,
23:47and none of them to the body of Stephen Cairns.
23:50He hasn't taken a body shot
23:52through just about six rounds of boxing tonight.
23:55A fair play to Gregorios.
23:57He's a tough man indeed.
24:00Well, there's the bell,
24:01and there's no doubt about the score,
24:03and there's a lot of chirping from the Argentine
24:05in the final round.
24:06He suddenly decided he wanted to try and
24:08talk his way to the final bell,
24:10but that very much goes down
24:13in the category of a good learning fight
24:15for Stephen Cairns.
24:16It's a win, there's no doubt.
24:17He went about his business well,
24:19but was he frustrating,
24:21Ezequiel Gregorios?
24:23Yes, indeed,
24:24and you know, you come up against
24:25these type of opponents,
24:26Yes, indeed,
24:27and you know, you come up against
24:28these type of opponents,
24:29occasionally,
24:30but he will learn from it.
24:32An opponent constantly moving away from him,
24:34making things very, very awkward.
24:35It's difficult to get to.
24:37So, yes, he'll learn from it,
24:38go back into the gym with his coach,
24:40Dave Caldwell,
24:41and work on a few more things,
24:42but he's definitely got a lot of quality there.
24:44I love his technique.
24:45I think he's got decent power,
24:46and he's a decent boxer,
24:48Stephen Cairns,
24:49and at 22,
24:50I think he's got a big future indeed.
24:52No doubt about the fact
24:53he's going to get his hand raised
24:54in a minute or two.
24:55He said he wants to be busy,
24:56now he's with Queensbury,
24:58and he also made the point,
24:59the fact that he's got experience of boxing
25:01in as many different countries as he has
25:03will inevitably stand him in good stead
25:06with that experience
25:07as the career goes.
25:11Okay, so let's get the result.
