00:00♪♪
00:03Boxer, beat you in the dressing room.
00:05I want a clean fight.
00:06You'll have a fight within the norm.
00:08Good luck.
00:09Box.
00:10Let's go, champ!
00:12We take a look at the tail of the tape.
00:14Christopher Guerrero and Courtney Pennington.
00:16You see the 37-year-old veteran, Courtney Pennington.
00:21We'll enjoy a reach advantage here tonight
00:24as well as plenty of experience on his side.
00:30And some feel, Morgan, that this is a little bit
00:32of an audacious step up for Christopher Guerrero
00:36here tonight.
00:37100 percent, because, one,
00:40Courtney Pennington is sort of a reliable test
00:44for prospects, for people on the way up or the way down.
00:47He's a test you have to pass.
00:49But the last time any of us, any people,
00:51saw Courtney Pennington, a handful of people
00:53saw Courtney Pennington because video of this fight
00:56has been difficult to find on the Internet.
00:58He was losing a 10-round split decision to Castillo-Clayton,
01:03past Canadian Olympian out in Halifax.
01:06But to hear Courtney Pennington tell it
01:07and to hear some eyewitnesses to the fight tell it,
01:10Castillo-Clayton got a gift of a decision that night.
01:13And so, Castillo-Clayton, for whatever you think he was
01:17or whatever you think he hasn't accomplished,
01:21for him to squeak by Courtney Pennington,
01:25tells you that Courtney Pennington at 37
01:27still has a lot to offer.
01:30Guerrero, we last saw the Mbili Heffron undercard
01:34in Chewinigan, scoring a nasty first-round knockout
01:37over Kenny Larson.
01:39Courtney Pennington, certainly a step up from Kenny Larson.
01:43More than one step, Corey, I would imagine.
01:46And the thing about Guerrero, obviously,
01:49remember he had that fight on the Mbili undercard in January,
01:56and Tim Bradley on ESPN was sort of critical.
01:59He was underwhelmed about sort of a gap
02:01between what he had heard about Guerrero and what he saw.
02:03And Guerrero really, like Michael Jordan in The Last Dance,
02:06took that personally, right?
02:07And he went back, he overhauled his nutrition,
02:10he looked at how he trained,
02:12what he was doing outside the gym,
02:14whether or not his nutritional goals
02:16were sort of meeting those demands.
02:18Overhauled his nutrition, fine-tuned his game.
02:22Might be much improved, but it's just hard to tell
02:24because he blew out Kenny Larson so quickly,
02:26it was hard to see what else he had worked on
02:29in the intervening five months.
02:32Of course, we're talking about what could be next
02:34for Guerrero, about his development for Courtney Pennington.
02:37He still feels that with a victory here tonight,
02:40that bigger paydays could be in store for him.
02:44As he gets shoved to the mat there.
02:46Courtney Pennington is very self-aware about his position
02:50in this industry as sort of an opponent, a measuring stick.
02:54But he also knows that position is sort of tenuous
02:57because if too many of the people
02:59whom you were brought in to test
03:00wind up passing that test,
03:02you become even less of an opponent
03:04and you become the guy that's brought in to lose.
03:05And he feels he's not ready to do that yet.
03:07He feels he still has more to offer.
03:10Nice body shot from Guerrero a couple of moments ago.
03:12Certainly don't want to be taking too many of those
03:15if you're Courtney Pennington.
03:18Nonetheless, the pace of this round
03:20has to be something that Pennington is happy about.
03:23The slower the pace, likely,
03:25the better it is for Courtney Pennington.
03:27This is definitely a Pennington-paced fight so far.
03:29I want you to put the punches together.
03:53But yo, when he steps in, you got to make him pee.
03:55Yeah, I got you.
03:56They're fucking wide, they're slow.
03:58They do a sleazy job.
04:00Yo, I'm timing it.
04:01That's it.
04:04Yeah, it's good.
04:06You're too good for this guy.
04:07You're too good for him.
04:08You're giving him too much respect.
04:11Right, Chris?
04:11It's our first fight, it's fine.
04:13But I want you to take over now, man.
04:15Too good for this guy.
04:18Corey, you hear Giuseppe Maffa discuss
04:21how Courtney Pennington is sort of slow.
04:24His punches are slow, but that is sort of
04:26Courtney Pennington as a fighter
04:28I would compare him to a knuckleball pitcher.
04:31If you watch his fights, he'll move around a little bit,
04:33move around, switch stances, pick and poke with the jab.
04:37Every now and then he'll land a power punch
04:39that doesn't seem to move very quickly,
04:40but it'll land flush just because he's sort of toyed
04:44with your sense of timing to the extent that
04:47it's like a knuckleball pitcher
04:48throwing a bunch of knuckleballs
04:49and then when he throws the 75 mile an hour heater,
04:53he gets it past you because you've been looking
04:55at 46 all night.
04:57No, exactly.
04:57And Pennington in our fighter meetings yesterday
05:00kept coming back to the terminal rhythm,
05:02both his own rhythm, but in particular his opponent's rhythm
05:05and that I think is the best way
05:07to describe Pennington as a fighter.
05:09He's a disruptor of rhythm.
05:10Yes, like you see right there.
05:14Just hits, throws often enough and hard enough
05:17just to unsettle you, like right there.
05:20Yeah, nice right hand over the top there for Pennington.
05:22That was the 75 mile an hour fastball, Corey.
05:25And he gets those over the plate sometimes
05:28just because you're not ready for it.
05:31Pennington has been stopped in two of his last six fights.
05:34When Pennington has been stopped,
05:37it's typically been by fighters who are in and around
05:41the stage of career that Guerrero's in right now,
05:44in that space between prospect and contender.
05:46Those came at the hands of Raul Correal,
05:49of James Metcalf and Vlad Panin,
05:51who all at that time when the fights happened
05:53were in and around this stage.
05:55And it's also on Pennington's end,
05:59you see him start pretty well,
06:00like he's doing tonight against Guerrero.
06:05Having the fight unfold at his pace,
06:07but there's a point three or four or five rounds in
06:11where Pennington starts to tire,
06:14at least in those losses, that's how they tend to unfold.
06:17So we'll see what happens once he gets
06:19sort of into the middle rounds here.
06:22Remember, this is just an eight round fight,
06:24so pacing's very important for both fighters here.
06:29Once again, you saw Pennington land
06:31that lead overhand right now.
06:33In terms of pure speed, does it equate to,
06:37does it measure up to A.B. Martin Duvall's pure speed?
06:40Right.
06:41But it lands, just because the timing is so awkward.
06:43Because again, as you mentioned,
06:45and as Pennington was telling us yesterday,
06:47it's more about rhythm than it is pure speed.
06:50At least for him it is.
06:5830 seconds of round two here,
07:00you see Guerrero showing a lot of movement here,
07:03trying to get Pennington to open up.
07:06Misses over the top of the left hook.
07:08Pennington just prods away to the body.
07:10Ready?
07:18There's an uppercut on the inside there from Guerrero.
07:20He isn't being given too many opportunities
07:24in this round to land flush.
07:28And that'll do it for round two.
07:31Come on, come on, come on, come on.
07:38The family of Christopher Guerrero.
07:40There's Guerrero's mother watching from ringside.
07:48You know how to come in, come on, come on.
07:52Step in.
07:53Walk like this.
07:54Okay.
07:55Put punches together.
07:55Okay.
07:58We're showing him too much respect.
07:59That's right.
08:00Exactly.
08:03Put that, step in with that jab, step in with that jab.
08:05Put that right up.
08:06There's the body.
08:07That's what I'm talking about.
08:08Showing no respect.
08:10Put that uppercut.
08:10When he swings that uppercut, put that uppercut.
08:15That's exactly it.
08:16Come on, you can do it.
08:18Okay.
08:19First two rounds, it's not bad.
08:22Come on.
08:30A couple of things, Corey.
08:31One, we don't know how the judges have scored
08:33the first two rounds, but if you're Courtney Pennington,
08:35this is how you wanted the opening stages,
08:38stages of this fight to go.
08:40Two, I'm really struck by the level of frustration,
08:46a little bit from Guerrero,
08:47but especially from his coach, Giuseppe Maffa.
08:51Already, he's frustrated with the way
08:53this fight is unfolding, and you know,
08:56we are a quarter of the way through the fight
08:57because it's only an eight-round fight,
08:59so I'm interested to see what happens next.
09:01Does Guerrero make these adjustments,
09:03or is Pennington able to keep frustrating him
09:06with the awkward timing?
09:07Yeah, as we see Matt Cassavon scoring
09:09that last round, an even round.
09:12I actually think, you know, it may be jarring
09:14to hear a corner kind of getting that aggressive
09:16after just two rounds.
09:18But again, going back to the brevity of this fight,
09:21and what Pennington preys upon,
09:24which is creating hesitance in his opponent,
09:26it probably is important for Giuseppe Maffa
09:29to be getting in the face of Christopher Guerrero
09:31and saying, listen, we don't have time to be waiting.
09:34We have to get aggressive right now.
09:36100%, remember we were talking
09:37to Courtney Pennington yesterday,
09:38and we were asking him, given his style of fighting
09:43and the size of this ring, how would they coincide?
09:46And he said, I'm not worried about the size of the ring.
09:48It just means I have to work a little faster
09:52to catch, to figure out Guerrero's rhythm
09:55a little bit sooner than just getting
09:57to doing what I need to do.
09:59To his point, we're not seeing Pennington
10:01languishing on the ropes.
10:02He seldom touched the ropes at all.
10:04He's managing in his own crafty way
10:07to keep this inside a little bit of a circle
10:10that he's working with.
10:11Yeah, and the fights where you see Pennington lose,
10:12they're fights where he can't hold the center of the ring,
10:15where he winds up on the ropes,
10:16where he winds up on the run.
10:18His counter right hand there from Guerrero.
10:19And now we're starting to see Guerrero
10:21look like he has figured out Pennington's rhythm.
10:25Able to catch him coming in
10:26and land that left hook underneath.
10:27Beautiful counter left hook to the body,
10:30coming underneath the shot from Pennington.
10:32Now a right hand scores to the body as well.
10:35Lead uppercut from Guerrero,
10:37who spent a lot of time in recent months
10:40helping Steve Klagen prepare for Teofimo Lopez,
10:43in effect, had to be a Teofimo Lopez mimic.
10:47And so we've actually talked to Guerrero
10:49about how much of that kind of seeped in to his style
10:53in spending so much time trying to fight like Teofimo.
10:56Yeah, we had also, even before that fight
10:59was even conceived, we had sort of hit on this thing
11:02where substance is something different
11:06and accomplishments are something different,
11:08but stylistically there are a lot of similarities
11:10between Guerrero and Teofimo Lopez.
11:13So if you see that, you haven't maybe seen it so far,
11:16but if Guerrero really lets his hands go,
11:19if you feel like you see a similarity,
11:21that's not your mind playing tricks on you.
11:22He just landed an excellent uppercut
11:24that might have Pennington in some trouble right now.
11:27Big moment for Christopher Guerrero,
11:30but the time might run out here in the round, it will.
11:35Whoa, Christopher Guerrero either thinking about
11:40or miming a headbutt there, not the wisest of maneuvers.
11:44No, that's a good way to lose a point
11:45after a round that you've just won.
11:51But also emblematic of the frustration.
11:53I know, so fight that out, start talking to me, okay?
11:56Oh, oh, second time.
12:11There's Lopez landing that overhand right.
12:12Again, it's taken him a few rounds
12:14to try to solve Courtney Pennington's rhythm.
12:17They were really dancing to Courtney Pennington's tune
12:19the first couple of rounds.
12:21Beautiful counter uppercut, turns Pennington,
12:24sweeping right hand around the guard.
12:26Has Pennington on the run for the first time tonight?
12:30You didn't see there the,
12:32at least thought about a headbutt there
12:35from Christopher Guerrero.
12:36The pantomime headbutt.
12:37Yeah, yeah.
12:38Which would have negated all of the good work
12:40and you saw his corner admonish him immediately.
12:42Yes.
12:43We'll see if Guerrero can capitalize.
12:45We'll see if Pennington, the 37 year old Pennington,
12:48who again has been stopped in two of his last six fights,
12:51if he can recover here in the fourth round.
12:53But now we're starting to,
12:54we are at that point in Pennington's fights,
12:57at least the ones that he's lost,
13:00where he usually begins to struggle
13:04and he has to, there's a storm he's gonna have to weather
13:06Three, four rounds into the fight
13:07when the opponent starts to figure out his rhythm,
13:10Courtney Pennington starts to tire a little bit.
13:11And you're seeing him now, he's on the run.
13:13He's not able to hold ring center
13:14like he was the first two rounds.
13:15Right hand there from Guerrero
13:17and Pennington wobbled once more.
13:19The legs of Pennington betraying him
13:22as he takes a knee in the corner.
13:24See the frustration on the face of Pennington.
13:31Pennington's got a lot of work to do here.
13:33See the frustration on the face of Pennington.
13:40Almost frustrated that these shots have affected him
13:43of the way that they have.
13:47In that knockdown, assuming Pennington survives,
13:51it alters the mathematics of this fight.
13:53We were talking to Pennington yesterday
13:54and he said, huge right hand from Guerrero
13:58and down goes Pennington for a second time
14:01here in round four.
14:09The Guerrero telling Pennington, stay down.
14:13The brashness of Christopher Guerrero
14:16and the power of Christopher Guerrero
14:19shining here in the fourth
14:22as the legs of Pennington all over the place.
14:25And Guerrero has closed the show.
14:31What a performance from Christopher Guerrero
14:51as he's congratulated by the Pennington corner.
14:55And listen, Morgan, there are a lot of people
14:57in this venue around the fight this week
15:00who predicted a tough test for Guerrero in this fight.
15:04They definitely thought this one was going rounds.
15:08Pennington on paper looked like the first fighter
15:10to truly test Guerrero.
15:12He was not able to.
15:13A hundred percent, because even if you'd watched
15:15only the first two rounds of this fight
15:17and tried to predict where we would go from there,
15:20Pennington, if he wasn't in control,
15:22it was still going the way he wanted it to.
15:24He was the guy who had the superior timing,
15:25superior rhythm, was doing what he said he was going to do.
15:28But here's Guerrero having made the adjustment,
15:32having figured out how to alter his timing
15:35to sort of catch up with these knuckleballs
15:37and finding finally lanes and spaces
15:41to land clean, straight right hands.
15:44And once Pennington had to get on his bike,
15:48there was nothing else he could do.
15:49He's not fast enough to evade Christopher Guerrero,
15:52especially not in this small ring.
15:54Not a powerful enough puncher
15:57to make Guerrero think twice about unloading.
16:00And we had the result we had,
16:01but Guerrero had to make some adjustments to make it work.
16:05Well, and as we know, Morgan, you know,
16:08there's some marketing acumen behind this matchmaking too.
16:11And you know that the Canadian boxing press
16:13is going to have a lot to chew on
16:15in terms of the comparison
16:17between Guerrero's performance against Pennington
16:20and Castillo-Clayton's performance
16:22against Courtney Pennington.
16:23A hundred percent, because if people in this country,
16:25they don't know anything.
16:26We know Castillo-Clayton's pedigree.
16:28We know his background.
16:30We know that his sole loss was to Jaron Ennis,
16:34but a lot of people lose to Jaron Ennis.
16:36Everybody loses to Jaron Ennis.
16:37And the fact that a guy
16:38that took Castillo-Clayton 10 rounds
16:41won that fight on somebody's scorecard.
16:43And according to eyewitnesses,
16:45and again, Courtney Pennington will tell you
16:47there's a reason why that fight's not widely available
16:49on the internet, but according to eyewitnesses,
16:52probably won that fight.
16:53And to see Christopher Guerrero turn around
16:56and blow him out like this says a lot.
17:02The best win of the career of Christopher Guerrero.
17:09And it's the kind of win that will compel people
17:12to think that Guerrero could speed up the development
17:15a little bit now.
17:17An important test for Guerrero to pass.
17:20And he did so with flying colors.
17:27Some engaging corner work from the Maffas.
17:30Lit a fire under Guerrero and he delivered.
17:33Ladies and gentlemen, this fight is stopped
17:40at one minute, 56 seconds of round number four.
17:44Your winner by TKO, Christopher Machine Gun Guerrero.
17:59So the Machine Gun, Christopher Guerrero
18:02wasn't able to let off too many rounds
18:04in rounds one and two, but once round three began,
18:08it was a entirely different story.
18:12And Morgan, I have to give credit to Giuseppe Maffa again,
18:16because that was very timely, very sage corner work,
18:19identifying how that fight was going and ensuring
18:23that his fighter did not get rocked to sleep by a spoiler.
18:27Yeah, and in real time,
18:29I didn't quite know what to make of it.
18:30Again, I was a little taken aback
18:32that Giuseppe Maffa seemed so frustrated
18:35so early in the fight,
18:37but he knows his fighter better than.
