00:00Boxers, meet you in the dressing room. I want a clean fight.
00:12We take a look at the tail of the tape for our next contest.
00:15Wilkins Mathieu and Rolando Manciccia.
00:17You see the reach and height that Manciccia will be giving up here tonight
00:23as he steps all the way up essentially to light heavyweight tonight.
00:27This one contracted at a catch weight of 172 as Mathieu stays busy,
00:32but realistically Morgan will settle in at 168 once the fights get a little bigger.
00:39First thing, Corey, shout out to Wilkins Mathieu for his middle-aged hip-hop fan
00:43taste in use of Ringwalking to The Fire by The Roots.
00:47That album, How I Got Over, came out in 2010 when Wilkins Mathieu was 5 years old.
00:51That would be like me Ringwalking to Ain't No Stop in His Neck.
00:57The original Ringwalk music are one of them, right?
01:00Shout out to Larry Holmes.
01:03See the hand speed immediately here from Wilkins Mathieu.
01:07He's got a durable test in front of him here in Manciccia.
01:10The last time out went the 6-round distance with Moreno Fendero.
01:14Of course, unfortunately, you saw the power that Fendero possesses in our opening contest,
01:20but he also went the distance recently with De'Vell Smith,
01:23good-looking prospect from Michigan.
01:25He went the distance with J. Rock Williams.
01:27So there's a reason why Manciccia has been chosen by the matchmakers here tonight
01:32to try to give Mathieu 8 rounds.
01:35Yeah, Manciccia is a super power.
01:38His calling card is his skill as a survivor,
01:41and it's something that he has sort of honed over the years.
01:44He has 15 losses, 10 by decision.
01:47One of these stoppages was because he had a broken leg,
01:49but mostly stoppage losses were from early in his career.
01:52And as he has progressed and sort of evolved as a pro fighter,
01:55he has figured out how not to lose by stoppage even if he's not winning the fight.
02:02See that right hand from Mathieu wrapping around the guard of Manciccia a couple of times,
02:06partially blocked, but those are shots, Morgan,
02:09that even if they touch a little bit of the temple, you're feeling those shots.
02:13Yes, 100%.
02:14And this is what has so many people here in Montreal,
02:18but also beyond, excited about Wilkins' match as a prospect.
02:22It's not just his size and his speed.
02:25It's the sharpness of the individual punches,
02:27and as you're seeing right here, the way he puts them together.
02:30Hard body shots there from Mathieu as Manciccia assumes that position along the ropes
02:37where, Morgan, he spent the vast majority of his night against Moreno Fendero
02:42just blocking and absorbing a ridiculous amount of punishment over six rounds,
02:48but again heard the final bell.
02:50Yeah, and this is one of the reasons, too, Corey,
02:53why Rolando Manciccia is one of our favorite characters in the fight game.
02:59He's a guy, he's a committed crossfitter.
03:01He has told us that this was, the 2024 was going to be his last year as a professional boxer,
03:06but he has also told us that as long as he has visible abdominal muscles,
03:10he might as well keep fighting, but he has also told us that he is a committed crossfitter
03:14and tracks his macros religiously, so he might have abs for a long time, Corey.
03:19Easy night for him in terms of making weight at 172,
03:23but not an easy opening round here against Wilkins Mathieu.
03:57Power shot, just limitation on the bouquet, with a little defensive movement.
04:28For our viewers in the United States and also in Australia,
04:31where there's a sizable English-speaking audience for this card,
04:34we don't have the benefit of rudimentary French education like Corey and I have.
04:39What Mike Moffitt was asking Wilkins Mathieu to do between rounds,
04:43he's telling him to work head down to the body and then body back to the head,
04:46but be a little bit more defensive as he's doing it,
04:49so we'll see how well Wilkins Mathieu follows that direction.
04:52I think one thing we saw from Mathieu in the opening round,
04:55changing the trajectory of that right hand, knowing that Mancisa is going to shell up,
05:00he's not really going to punch with you,
05:02and then changing the trajectory of it to throw it to the body
05:05as Mancisa is bracing for that head shot.
05:08He has landed a lot of hard body shots in the latter half of that opening round.
05:13Beautiful left hook there from Mathieu.
05:15Testing those steel-plated turtle shell abdominal muscles.
05:19Mancisa says, keep him in the game.
05:22After that warning, before the low blow, another nice left hook connected from Mathieu.
05:31If there are some new viewers seeing Mathieu for the first time,
05:34perhaps less familiar with his story as he steps in with another nice left hook.
05:40This is a fighter who moved to Montreal on his own at the age of 15
05:44with only one goal, to turn professional.
05:46He really didn't care about seeing his amateur career to the end.
05:50Indeed, any high-level athlete as a kid and boxers,
05:54they have kind of unusual childhoods where they're pathologically obsessed
05:58with the sport that they're involved in.
06:00But usually, for boxers, they still have a home base.
06:03They're going home at the end of the tournament.
06:05Mathieu took it a step further.
06:07He basically moved with his boxes of boxing magazines
06:10and went to Montreal to start his quest.
06:13Yes, and he's also the youngest brother in a fighting family,
06:16but his older brothers don't fight competitively anymore.
06:21Especially his older brother, Lexen, who was a really hot prospect for a while,
06:25quit boxing either right before or during the pandemic
06:28and turned into a full-time cryptocurrency trader.
06:31Wound up moving to Thailand, but you see him back there at the fights.
06:33He's helping manage his younger brother's career.
06:36Nice combination there from Mathieu.
06:38Toe to the body, then climbs the ladder.
06:40With a nice right hand, and there's why.
06:42Mike Mafa is warning Mathieu to still be defensively responsible.
06:46Some of these big haymakers from Mancicha every once in a while
06:50can at the very least look dangerous.
06:52And Mancicha understands, too, that that's his best chance
06:55to make something happen in this fight.
06:56He has a guy in front of him that's taller, that's longer,
06:59and several levels faster.
07:01Beautiful body shot there from Mathieu.
07:05What a counter shot from Mathieu,
07:07and he goes right back downstairs to the body.
07:13What a counter that was from Mathieu,
07:16ducking under the colossal swing of Mancicha
07:20to place a shot right along the belt line.
07:25Can't wait to take another look at that one.
07:29Can't wait to take another look at that one.
07:48Counter left hook to the body, there's Mancicha
07:51throwing two of what Corey called his haymakers.
07:54There it is, that's the punch of the round.
07:58Quick counter left hook to the rib cage.
08:01Had even a guy as tough as Rolando Mancicha
08:04backing up, taking a breath, regrouping, reevaluating.
08:23Even if you don't speak French, you saw from Mike Maffa's body language
08:26what he wants from Wilkins Mathieu.
08:29Get back on the jab, but definitely revisit that left hook to the body,
08:32then come over the top with the right hand.
08:35Mathieu starts the round with a nice pull counter a moment ago.
08:38Maffa described that counter shot as beautiful,
08:42and you saw Mathieu high-stepping after he landed that one.
08:45You know, he looked like you and I warming up on the turf
08:48at Nautilus Purser's.
08:50I hope he doesn't look anything like me moving, doing anything athletic.
08:54I have the 48-year-old joints for a reason.
08:57Let's let Wilkins Mathieu enjoy being 19.
09:00See our French colleague, Matt Casavant, his scorecard.
09:04Seeing it for the first time here tonight.
09:07Obviously the first two rounds in the bank for Wilkins Mathieu
09:11as Mathieu goes right back downstairs to the body.
09:14Same counter shot, same shot from Manchicha that he avoids.
09:18We also saw a minute ago Manchicha sort of taking a chance,
09:22throwing a jab, and now you see why he doesn't jab more.
09:27Look at that left hook from Mathieu.
09:32And the mouthpiece, I believe, of Manchicha
09:37wound up at one of the neighboring dinner tables.
09:42But in those two sequences you saw Mathieu counter very quickly over the jab.
09:48But you saw Manchicha land that left hook.
09:51And again, this is his best chance to make anything happen
09:54is just to load up and land when Mathieu's not expecting it.
09:58Because if they're going to trade punches,
10:00Manchicha's on the wrong side of that exchange all night.
10:03Well, as durable as Manchicha is, the body language,
10:07the way that he's reacting to some of these shots,
10:09as you might expect as he stepped way up in weight,
10:12looking very different than it did against Moreno-Fandero,
10:15even different than it did against Avell Smith.
10:17Yes, and when you think about the leverage
10:21that Wilkins Mathieu is able to put on these punches,
10:25you think about the fact, too, that Wilkins Mathieu,
10:27one thing he's used to is Diego Manchicha,
10:29aside from his durability, his calling card is his physical strength.
10:33And he can impose that physical strength against C-level fighters at 160 and 168.
10:38Very different to do that at 172 against Wilkins Mathieu.
10:41And Wilkins Mathieu spars with Christian and Billy,
10:43so he's used to dealing with short, strong, aggressive guys.
10:48Inside the final minute here of round three,
10:52as Mathieu hunts for what would still be an impressive stoppage win
10:56if he can pull it off.
10:59Hard body shots again.
11:01You can hear these left hooks from Wilkins Mathieu.
11:06And even though it's primarily a willing target,
11:10shall we call it, Morgan, in Manchicha,
11:12that he's throwing against it,
11:14you can see the athleticism, the stylism from Mathieu
11:18that makes people excited.
11:20You see something different in Mathieu when you watch him operate.
11:23When he said this the first time we saw Wilkins Mathieu
11:25is that he looks the part.
11:28And I compared him to Micah Parsons, the defensive end.
11:31And I compared him to Micah Parsons, the defensive end.
11:34If you just saw Micah Parsons and someone told you
11:36that's an NFL pass rusher, you'd say,
11:38I see it, that guy looks the part.
11:40And Wilkins Mathieu definitely looks the part
11:42of slick, fast boxer puncher.
11:47That'll do it for round three, another dominant one for Wilkins.
11:51And here are his brothers, the Mathieu brothers,
11:56who recently went in on a trucking company here in Quebec,
12:00if you'll remember, Morgan, so they now have a serious
12:03physical investment here in the province of Quebec
12:06and basically a retirement plan for all three of the brothers.
12:09It's great to see them back over here.
12:13I'm sure Rolando Manchicha can't wait until Wilkins Mathieu
12:17gives up boxing and starts driving a truck
12:20so he won't have to take any more of these vicious left hooks
12:22to the body and head.
12:25And it's become, there's Manchicha trying to connect
12:29with one of these haymakers as Wilkins Mathieu stalks him.
12:35But it's so hard for Manchicha to land those
12:37and to land enough of those to string them together
12:40to make Wilkins Mathieu think twice about anything he can do.
12:45So Mathieu's mother obviously enjoying what she's watching
12:48right now as round four begins.
12:5219-year-old Wilkins Mathieu
12:57taking on the double-tough Rolando Manchicha,
13:01who again every once in a while offers one of these big haymakers
13:06that I think I describe them as shots that look threatening,
13:09they could be threatening.
13:11I mean that shot that landed as Wilkins landed the shot
13:14that knocked Manchicha's mouthpiece out, that was a dangerous shot.
13:17It was a dangerous shot, maybe against a different fighter
13:19in a different circumstance, it does more damage.
13:21And again, it is, and a different weight class too again
13:25because Manchicha is up sort of half a weight class
13:28from what he's used to.
13:30But in his world, in the fights that he usually wins,
13:34that punch makes a difference.
13:46Big right hand and down goes Manchicha.
13:51It takes a lot to drop that man,
13:55and he may stay on the canvas, no.
14:00Boy, that looked like the posture of a fighter
14:03who might stay seated, but we should have known better
14:06when it comes to this man.
14:08But lots of time for Mathieu to work with.
14:13Hard body shot again in the midst of that flurry
14:16and Manchicha goes down once more.
14:18This time I would be surprised if he gets up
14:20because he appears to have gone down from a body shot.
14:24Gesturing towards his ribs.
14:26Oh, he's up.
14:27And that is it.
14:29Manchicha gets up, but the referee wisely
14:34waving this one off, Morgan.
14:36The punishment was just going to get worse.
14:38Yeah, and this is, again, and this is why you match
14:42a fighter like Wilkins, match it with a fighter like
14:45because you want to see if he, one, either way he wins
14:49because if you want to force him to go around
14:51because he's stopping people before he can work
14:53on the things he needs to work on,
14:55Manchicha will give them rounds.
14:57If he's able to stop Manchicha and Manchicha can't
14:59give him rounds, that's a good thing,
15:01and you're not going to ignore that.
15:03Huge right hand, and again, set up.
15:05There was sort of this chess match fainting contest,
15:09and then Mathieu goes down.
15:13And then Mathieu finally had this right hand rip,
15:17dropped Manchicha.
15:19And this flurry here to this sequence,
15:22hidden in all those punches was a left hand,
15:25a left hook to the rib cage that ended Diego,
15:29I keep calling him Diego, Rolando Manchicha's evening.
15:32Yeah, and you can see the nuance even in that final flurry,
15:35Morgan, you know, as Mathieu is squared up,
15:38and it looks like he's just kind of brazenly letting
15:41his hands go.
15:43His lead foot, his right foot way on the outside
15:45of Manchicha, so he had the lane for that left hook
15:47that landed and finished this fight.
15:49Or even the right hand that started that sequence,
15:52because every power puncher eventually reaches a point
15:54where the power alone can't do it,
15:56you have to find ways to set up the power.
15:58And here is Mathieu facing a guy who is determined,
16:02like his job one, his game plan one, plan A,
16:06is to not let Wilkins Mathieu impose that power,
16:09and Wilkins Mathieu had to think a little bit
16:11and find a way to create an opening to unleash that power.
16:14Really impressive stuff from Wilkins Mathieu,
16:16and you see why so many people are so excited about him.
16:20For Rolando Manchicha, again, as we mentioned,
16:23suggested that this could be his final year
16:26of active competition, and he's been going out
16:31on a series of tremendously tough fights
16:34as he checks the state of the abdominals
16:37that he says are the barometer of whether or not
16:39he'll continue fighting.
16:40Yeah, and listen, those abs might not go anywhere, Corey,
16:43so you might see him back here next year,
16:45depending on if another 160- to 68-pound prospect
16:50materializes on this end.
16:53Ladies and gentlemen, the official time is 1 minute 41 seconds
16:57of the fourth round.
16:59Referee Yvon Goulet stops the fight,
17:01declaring the winner by knockout.
17:04So ladies and gentlemen, official time,
17:061 minute 41 seconds of round number four.
17:10Referee Yvon Goulet stops the fight,
17:12declaring the winner by TKO,
17:16Wilkins Mathieu!
17:26So Wilkins Mathieu improves to 11-0,
17:29that being his seventh knockout of his pro career thus far,
17:33and quite possibly the most impressive performance
17:36of his career thus far.
17:38The most durable opponent they've placed in front of him,
17:41and yet another demolition job from the 19-year-old.
17:45Yeah, and Wilkins Mathieu has fought, I think,
17:47eight times in the last 12 months.
17:49He's been busy, and a lot of times,
17:51especially early in a fighter's career,
17:53when they're that busy, you sort of trade quantity of...
