Charging ahead: Advanced autonomous 5G buses being tested in Putrajaya this year

  • last week
Plans are underway to test a 5G autonomous electric bus service with limited operational passenger service trials in Putrajaya later this year.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said these buses will use 5G to navigate, connect passengers with public Wi-Fi, and offer in-vehicle closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and other monitoring bells and whistles to make the ride safer and more reliable.

00:00Autonomous public transportation is being trialled and deployed in many cities across
00:10the globe.
00:11In Shanghai, Hamburg in May 2024, the UK introduced the Automated Vehicles Act where we will see
00:20self-driving vehicles on its roads by the year 2026.
00:25We are seeing the same technology being developed right here in Malaysia and by Malaysian companies
00:30Each autonomous vehicle system is customised with the road and traffic conditions, customised
00:36to passenger demands and of course, importantly, local legislation.
00:43The autonomous public mobility system brings several key benefits to the operator and the
00:49community.
00:50The autonomous buses use a combination of sensors, cameras and light detection and ranging
00:57capabilities, which can literally see traffic, cyclists and other obstacles in all directions.
01:04This data is then processed real-time using AI algorithms to make decisions about navigation,
01:12obstacle avoidance and route planning, which ultimately, as it builds up, makes the journey
01:19safer and a lot more efficient.
01:22This is in line with the Medani government's efforts to transform Malaysia into a digital
01:27nation, where we use digital technology such as 5G to significantly improve public services,
01:33to improve businesses, communities and ultimately, government.
01:38When will the process begin so that the autonomous buses can be used in an autonomous way?
01:47There is no timeline yet, but because the POC is currently underway, we also have a power
01:53of attorney in this autonomous vehicle matter.
01:56Of course, the parties that are given the authority to run this POC can also provide
02:02an overview of the form of legislation or moves that are needed.
02:11So, as the Ministry of Transport, of course, we are ready to help.
02:16But I am confident that we also need to look at several examples in other countries that
02:23may already have a legal framework.
02:26As of now, Malaysia does not yet have a legal framework for autonomous vehicles.
02:31So, we need to look at external examples as a reference.
02:36And of course, we are ready to provide facilitation.
02:41And if this can be commercialised more quickly, we can move along.
