Republican Liz Cheney urges US to vote for Kamala Harris

Former U.S. Representative Liz Cheney urged fellow Republicans to vote for Democrat Kamala Harris and called Donald Trump 'someone who represents unrecoverable catastrophe,' during an interview with ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday (September 8).

She also called on Republicans who aren't voting for Trump and considering a third-party candidate or writing in the name of another candidate to reconsider.

"I think that this time around, that's not enough, that it's important to actually cast a vote for Vice President Harris... Donald Trump presents a challenge and a threat fundamentally to the republic," Cheney said.

00:00I've never voted for a Democrat.
00:05And it tells you, I think, the stakes in this election.
00:09You know, Donald Trump presents a challenge and a threat fundamentally to the republic.
00:16We see it on a daily basis.
00:19Somebody who was willing to use violence in order to attempt to seize power, to stay in
00:25power, someone who represents unrecoverable catastrophe, frankly, in my view.
00:32And we have to do everything possible to ensure that he doesn't, that he's not reelected.
00:39Given how close this race is, in my view, again, it's not enough.
00:44You have many Republicans out there who are saying, well, you know, we're not going to
00:48vote for him, but we will write someone else in.
00:51And I think that this time around, that's not enough, that it's important to actually
00:56cast a vote for Vice President Harris.
00:59I want to get to that in a moment.
01:01But first, you've made it.
01:03I think that what's happened to the Republican Party today, you know, is indefensible.
01:11And I hope to be able to rebuild, as I said, after this cycle.
01:16But I also think it's really important for us as we're thinking about rebuilding, as
01:20we're thinking about the future of the country, to recognize that at the end of the day, the
01:25vast majority of people in this country want to know fundamentally that their elected officials
01:33are going to defend the peaceful transfer of power and that they are going to put the
01:37Constitution first.
01:39And as someone who's—it obviously makes the danger even greater.
01:47But when you look at what Donald Trump would be able to do with the levers of power, the
01:52extent to which he's already said he will not abide by the rulings of the courts—you
01:57know, our courts can't enforce their own rulings.
01:59If a president won't abide by the rulings of the courts, the rule of law disintegrates
02:04immediately.
