00:00:00dry in Q2, but then came down heavily. You see the drivers scrambling for grip. Lewis
00:00:05Hamilton tried a set of intermediate tires when the rain was falling at its least, but
00:00:09when he came out on the wets he needed, it was raining heavily and he could not advance.
00:00:13Kimi Raikkonen had a spin. Hamilton on and off the track. The BMW Sauber drivers were
00:00:19having problems. Felipe Massa, by 21 thousandths of a second, managed to get a lap in that
00:00:26moved him into the final session, but he will start no higher than 6th. Hamilton, 15th
00:00:32in the Italian Grand Prix. Which puts a lot of pressure on his teammate, Heikki Kovalainen.
00:00:37Seen here, Heikki Kovalainen was on the front row with Sebastian Vettel. He kept his head
00:00:40down all the way, kept on turning in good laps. He thought he got the pole right at
00:00:44the end, but he did not. But there's a lot of pressure on him. He's absolutely got to
00:00:48win this race from a constructor's point of view, and of course he's got to beat Felipe
00:00:51Massa to keep those points from amassing. Massa now only two points behind Hamilton
00:00:56after the debacle at Spa last week. Well and for me, it's Toro Rosso. The young junior
00:01:03team from Red Bull may have scored but 17 points all season compared to Ferrari's current
00:01:08tally of 131, but none of that matters today. In Ferrari's backyard, at Ferrari's home Grand
00:01:15Prix using Ferrari engines, the tiny Red Bull Junior team have taken the pole at Monza.
00:01:20Not only that, with Sebastian Vettel winning the pole, he has displaced Fernando Alonso
00:01:24to become the sport's youngest pole sitter in the 59-year history of the sport. Difficult
00:01:30race ahead, no question about that for Red Bull. They may be light, but they already
00:01:33have every reason to celebrate the Italian Grand Prix. Absolutely they do, and you saw
00:01:39Sebastian Vettel's teammate, Sebastian Bourdais, come over to congratulate him. I'm sure they
00:01:44had a big party last night up at Faenza, where Toro Rosso began life as the minority team
00:01:50and spare a thought for Giancarlo Minardi, who hopefully is somewhere nearby as his team
00:01:55starts from pole position for the first time ever. And we're having a few rain-related
00:02:01problems with Peter Windsor's live camera down in the pit lane, but we can certainly
00:02:05hear from him. The microphone works just fine. Peter, welcome.
00:02:11Hi, Bob. Yeah, I can hear you just fine too. Thank you very much. It's very, very wet on
00:02:15the grid, I can report. We've seen a lot of drivers leave the pit lane on the extreme
00:02:20wet Bridgestone tyre, and at the moment, if the conditions continue as they are, that
00:02:24is going to be the tyre, I suspect, on which they will start the race. Remember, the difference
00:02:28between those two wet tyres from Bridgestone, the intermediate tyre, a much harder compound,
00:02:33should last for at least the distance of a proper race stint, one third of the race distance,
00:02:38in other words. But the soft tyre will give up very quickly if the track starts to dry,
00:02:42but right now, it's got a much softer compound, and that's where the grip is.
00:02:47We see David Coulthard being pushed to his grid position. Typically, they push the cars,
00:02:52they don't want to endanger those delicate racing clutches by creeping through the crowded
00:02:56pre-grid. There's Dietrich Matiszewicz on the right, the owner of the Red Bull Energy
00:03:01Drink Empire. He's got to be a proud papa today as well.
00:03:05Speed.
00:03:08Welcome back to Monza. There's a look at Felipe Massa making his reconnaissance laps, the
00:03:13Ferrari trying to break away under braking, straight-lining the chicane. Boy, was that
00:03:18a story last week at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. There's his teammate, Kimi Räikkönen,
00:03:24also struggling to keep that Ferrari horsepower under control. It's going to be a patchy racetrack
00:03:31here at Monza. Part of it soaking wet, part of it halfway dry. You can imagine with drivers
00:03:36like that man, Henke Kovalainen, who will start for the front row for the fourth time
00:03:39this year, must be thinking, how do I get my arms around the race still to come?
00:03:47Lewis Hamilton's brief 30-race Formula 1 career has seen its ups and downs. He's had a couple
00:03:51of interesting weeks, having his win taken away a week ago at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
00:03:57That decision of the stewards is still under appeal. Earlier this week, our Peter Windsor
00:04:02spent a few quiet minutes with the championship leader. Let's meet Lewis.
00:04:08Lewis, thanks for joining us. I'd like to begin with a complicated question, really,
00:04:12and that is the juxtaposition, the balance between the Lewis Hamilton that we've seen
00:04:18for a decade or more, who just loves racing, loves driving racing cars, and the Lewis Hamilton
00:04:22that now works for this huge company, a thousand people behind you, and the seriousness of
00:04:27winning a world championship. The balance between those two Lewises.
00:04:32Yeah, I think we saw it in my first year, you know, I was very much living my dream
00:04:38and this was just something I always wanted to do. I love getting in the car and I enjoy
00:04:42it every time and I'm just a kid, just playing with this wicked toy and not really thinking
00:04:49too much about, you know, the future of what's coming up. And so trying to have a balance
00:04:55of the passion and the heart and the drive that you have and being, you know, when you
00:05:01have a huge team like McLaren, you've got a friend with a Mercedes, it's a huge team,
00:05:05I have a thousand people behind me. That's a lot of people for two drivers just to make
00:05:10two cars and then get to the races and, you know, keep all your sponsors happy, all these
00:05:15different things outside of it, which, to be honest, if you just be yourself, then it's easy.
00:05:20So how quickly can you switch off after a disappointing day?
00:05:24I think the more and more disappointing days you have, the more and more you get used to
00:05:29it and the more and more you learn. I think every day you learn something new and whether
00:05:33or not you have a good day, particularly I feel you learn a lot more on a bad day and
00:05:40it's how you cope with it and how you take those positives and move forward. And I really
00:05:46felt this year is one of my strengths, you know. I've had a couple of disappointing races
00:05:51but being able to come back to the next race and people ask you, how do you bounce back?
00:05:56It's not a case of bouncing back. I just stay where I was, you know.
00:06:01You've never been reticent about speaking of your inner strength and your faith, if you like.
00:06:07How has that evolved as you've become a star on the world stage and how does Lewis Hamilton
00:06:13balance with the guy you see on the billboards around the world now?
00:06:17Yeah, I mean, I don't get to see all that stuff. I might see a picture of myself somewhere
00:06:23but, I mean, it's very, very surreal still today for me. It's very, very surreal.
00:06:29But, I don't know, I think I've always had a very strong belief in myself and I think
00:06:34you have to be doing what I'm doing and to go out there and put your life on the line
00:06:40and you drive to succeed and to be the best. So I've always had that.
00:06:44But I think this year my confidence has gone up. I'm a lot closer to my faith this year,
00:06:52to my religion and to my family and to everyone around me.
00:06:57And really just being very thankful for the opportunities I've been given, you know.
00:07:03And, you know, it's a great opportunity I've been given, you know.
00:07:08I'm racing for Formula One. I mean, there's only 20 of us doing it.
00:07:12And if I wasn't thankful and showed that I was thankful every day,
00:07:16then I just, I wouldn't deserve to be here.
00:07:20Well, there's Lewis Hamilton, who's been through so much in recent years.
00:07:26From a simple aspiring racing driver to one of the most famous racing drivers in the world.
00:07:32Missed the World Championship by a single point last year amid all the controversy
00:07:36of his fractious relationship with teammate Fernando Alonso.
00:07:39Now he is the World Championship leader again, but by just two points coming into this weekend
00:07:45over Ferrari's Felipe Massa.
00:07:48What twists and turns will the championship take today
00:07:51in one of the most famous racetracks in the world?
00:07:53We'll find out. Stay with us.
00:07:58Welcome back live to Monza.
00:08:02Waiting for the start of round 14 of the 2008 Formula One season, the Italian Grand Prix.
00:08:07There's McLaren, Mercedes, Ron Dennis speaking with the media.
00:08:12Rubens Barrichello. It's been another difficult weekend for Honda,
00:08:15despite the rain coming into the weekend.
00:08:18They normally do a rain dance, but they got the wet stuff this weekend.
00:08:21Haven't been able to do much with it.
00:08:23Well, we have a moment. We're still struggling with Peter Windsor's camera,
00:08:27but let's get him standing by on the microphone with Red Bull driver Mark Webber.
00:08:33Quick word, Mark?
00:08:35Mark, congratulations on P3.
00:08:37A fantastic grid position, particularly in these conditions.
00:08:40We've just seen Felipe Massa bobble at one of the chicanes.
00:08:42What's it like out there, as Chris Economacki used to say?
00:08:46The grip level is reasonable.
00:08:49Obviously, believe it or not, we've still got to save a little bit of fuel going to the grid,
00:08:53so we can't push too hard.
00:08:54But I obviously felt the grip a little bit in some of the critical areas,
00:08:57to feel the front tyre and also feel how the rear was picking up in grip.
00:09:00So not too bad. I followed Robert, who was on an inter,
00:09:03so I managed to have a look at how that was behaving,
00:09:05and the inter looks quite tricky.
00:09:08Yeah, the spray is going to be the biggest problem for us.
00:09:11I mean, we can't see once the cars get over 150 miles an hour.
00:09:15So when we're doing 200, above 200 miles an hour, it's very hard to see.
00:09:18So it could be on the first lap we might see the cars spread out quite a lot because of the spray.
00:09:22Yeah, I think so, because the guys can't pick up the braking points,
00:09:24so you have to allow margin.
00:09:26Mark, we asked you before Spa what Eau Rouge was going to be like first lap.
00:09:29What's the first corner here going to be like, braking points?
00:09:32I think a lot less exciting.
00:09:35Yeah, I think it's going to be obviously tip-toe stuff.
00:09:37Very, very careful with the downshifts and all the braking.
00:09:40Eau Rouge obviously is a different type of corner,
00:09:43but yeah, the first few laps here are very fast, as we know, in this track.
00:09:48Best of luck.
00:09:50All right, thanks very much, Peter.
00:09:52You saw Jensen Button, who apparently will start his Honda from the pit lane,
00:09:56as will Kaz Nakajima in the Williams Toyota.
00:10:00In qualifying in the wet, it was all about downforce.
00:10:02Who had it, who didn't, how will it hurt them in the race?
00:10:05Here's another edition of RPM Racing Per Match,
00:10:08talking about the subject of downforce.
00:10:18Well, we see day in, day out that modern Formula 1 cars have amazing cornering abilities,
00:10:22and to explain more about that to us, I'm pleased to say we're joined by Jeff Willis,
00:10:26the technical director of Red Bull Racing.
00:10:28Thank you very much for sparing the time in joining us, Jeff.
00:10:31When we look at Formula 1 cars and we talk about downforce on the car,
00:10:34when I look at the front wing here on the Red Bull 3 chassis,
00:10:37to me, it looks like an aircraft that's just about coming in to land.
00:10:40All it is is the wing's been turned upside down.
00:10:42Is that a coincidence, or are you following similar design principles?
00:10:45Well, you're absolutely right.
00:10:47This is a wing, just like an aircraft wing,
00:10:49except upside down, giving us the force down there.
00:10:52And the important thing is we're looking for the max amount of downforce.
00:10:55So the reason the aircraft only uses that at take-off and landing
00:10:58is because then the drag doesn't matter.
00:11:00For us, downforce is everything, so we don't worry about the drag,
00:11:03and that's why we have these what we call multi-element front wings.
00:11:06But not just the wings producing downforce on the car, right?
00:11:09Also, we have the diffuser on the floor also generating downforce on the car?
00:11:14Yes, the Formula 1 cars exploit a thing that we call ground effect.
00:11:19It's when you have a high-speed body moving close to the ground
00:11:22with only a small gap of a few inches,
00:11:25you get extra low pressure underneath the car,
00:11:28and this ground effect is very important,
00:11:30and this is what helps us generate literally tons of downforce on the car.
00:11:34The one thing it does mean, though, we have to control the ride height.
00:11:37That's the gap between the car and the ground very carefully,
00:11:40and that's why you see these very small changes
00:11:42in the suspension and setup all the time.
00:11:44Is there any truth to this story that's been amalgamating for years?
00:11:47And you know what I'm going to talk about now.
00:11:49Driving the car upside down when you reach about 100 mph possible?
00:11:53The numbers certainly say it's possible.
00:11:55At about 9,500 mph, the current Formula 1 car,
00:11:58current regulations would be able to keep itself stuck to, say, the roof of a tunnel.
00:12:03The only challenge would be that, as we said before,
00:12:06the cars are very sensitive to the clearance away from the ground,
00:12:09so if something caused the car to come away from the roof of the tunnel,
00:12:14it would be a little bit exciting, I think.
00:12:16I think I'm going to have a word with our very own David Hobbs
00:12:19and get you two in conversation and see if we can put this to the test.
00:12:25Welcome back to a wet Monza.
00:12:36There's official word that the race, the Italian Grand Prix,
00:12:40will start behind the safety car.
00:12:43It was damp at the start of this race back in 2004.
00:12:46It also rained at some point in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza
00:12:49in 81, 76, and way back in 1956.
00:12:53But rain is rare, yet we've had it all weekend long.
00:12:58This is the Acura pre-race show for our exclusive coverage
00:13:01of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix at Monza here on Speed.
00:13:05You see the crews working in the pit lane.
00:13:07That's going to make pit stops interesting.
00:13:10We're still having trouble with Peter Windsor's camera,
00:13:12but the microphone works, so let's join Peter now
00:13:15with David Coulthard from the Red Bull team.
00:13:18David, can I join you as you walk back to the car?
00:13:21I know you're a great man for emotion and all that stuff,
00:13:24but this is your last ever European Grand Prix.
00:13:26Your thoughts?
00:13:28Well, I wish I was doing it in dry conditions,
00:13:30but then again, the other side of that is that this may be
00:13:33a great opportunity as well, so I'm just going to take it
00:13:36like any other Grand Prix, try to do my best.
00:13:38It looks as if the Adrian Newey car performs quite well
00:13:41on the Bridgestone wet.
00:13:42It seems to transform it into a nice, drivable, chuckable race car.
00:13:45Yeah, certainly.
00:13:47Todd Rosser still seems to have a bit of an advantage in that area,
00:13:50but, yeah, as an overall package,
00:13:52we do seem to perform a bit better.
00:13:54Obviously, the counter to that is Ferrari,
00:13:56who really seem to struggle.
00:13:57Jenson in the pit lane right now,
00:13:59because they're going to give him a wet rear wing setting.
00:14:01Not a stupid idea from where he is on the grid.
00:14:03I guess from where you are, though, you're better off
00:14:05just being where you are.
00:14:06Maybe you've got a wet wing anyway. I don't know.
00:14:08No, I'm actually a little bit lighter on downforce than Mark.
00:14:10You know, we figured on it being a bit drier today,
00:14:12which obviously at the moment doesn't look good,
00:14:14but, yeah, for Jenson, it's the right decision.
00:14:16Thanks very much, and very best of luck, David.
00:14:18Thanks for all the memories, too.
00:14:20Yes, indeed.
00:14:21Final visit to Monza for David Coulthard,
00:14:23who won this race back in 1997,
00:14:26very early in his Formula 1 career.
00:14:28There's Bernie Ecclestone leading his entourage off of the grid
00:14:32as officials begin to clear the way.
00:14:34There's the work being done on Jenson Button's Honda.
00:14:39That's happening in the pit lane,
00:14:40so they can do a wider variety of things.
00:14:42Looks like Nico Rosberg getting final touches on his Williams,
00:14:47celebrating their 500th Formula 1 start.
00:14:51We've got another break here on the Acura Pre-Race Show.
00:14:54We apologize for the technical difficulties,
00:14:56but we'll be back shortly, and we do know the race will go on.
00:15:02I think there's raindrops falling.
00:15:03I think so.
00:15:04Certainly around the source.
00:15:05Hamilton much quicker in the middle sector.
00:15:07He's going to try going around.
00:15:09Raikkonen won't have it. You can't do that.
00:15:11Got to give it up, but get right on his gearbox.
00:15:15And he's off.
00:15:19Hamilton's off.
00:15:20And Hamilton's got down to Raikkonen.
00:15:22Another Ferrari spinning. Raikkonen is into the wall.
00:15:25It's done.
00:15:26It's over, boys. It's over.
00:15:28Checkered flag is out,
00:15:30and it will wave over the most improbable finish in years,
00:15:35even at stop.
00:15:37It was Formula 1's most exciting finish in years.
00:15:41It was exalted.
00:15:42It was the lives of people around the world lifted up
00:15:45by two drivers whose battle for a few spellbinding minutes
00:15:49wasn't about money or celebrity or championship points.
00:15:53It was about the unimaginable depths of the human need to win.
00:15:58And then it was gone.
00:16:00This morning, Formula 1 officials took Lewis Hamilton's win away.
00:16:04That memory, which we would have so cherished,
00:16:07erased at the stroke of a steward's pen.
00:16:10The win denied by a trivial but devastating penalty.
00:16:14The fans disenfranchised,
00:16:16told that what they thought they saw
00:16:18wasn't really what had happened after all.
00:16:21And yet, today they race again,
00:16:24and again we watch.
00:16:26The track here is 86 years old,
00:16:28and its rich history reminds us
00:16:30that excitement in Formula 1 is a renewable resource,
00:16:34and more of it is coming our way right now
00:16:37as the Grand Prix of Italy at Monza unfolds next.
00:16:53The Italian city of Milan has La Scala,
00:16:56the renowned opera house,
00:16:58and a nearby suburb of Milan
00:17:00is the site of yet another world-famous Italian facility.
00:17:03The fastest track in the Formula 1
00:17:05World Driving Championship,
00:17:07the Autodromo Nazionale,
00:17:09known around the world simply as Monza.
00:17:12Welcome to Speed's exclusive live coverage
00:17:15of the Italian Grand Prix from Monza.
00:17:17Hi everybody, I'm Bob Barsha with David Hobbs,
00:17:20Steve Matchett and Peter Windsor.
00:17:22Let's get right to our BMW track analysis
00:17:24and ride with Fernando Alonso.
00:17:26Two-time world champion and winner last year,
00:17:28215 miles an hour right there in the dry,
00:17:30down to this, a 40-mile-an-hour corner,
00:17:32tricky wet or dry, very, very tight.
00:17:3440-mile-an-hour chicane,
00:17:36as we saw last week, you can't go cutting that corner.
00:17:39Water standing deep there,
00:17:41you can hear the revs struggling to get up there.
00:17:43Coming into the kerb at Grandi,
00:17:45a long, long, long corner,
00:17:47lots of run-up area on the left-hand side now,
00:17:49didn't ever used to be there
00:17:51because we were heading down for the Lesnos,
00:17:53but before, we had this, the Reggio chicane.
00:17:57We've seen a lot of action here over the years,
00:17:59a lot of run-up area on the inside,
00:18:00water standing deep,
00:18:01and of course it's going to make a huge difference
00:18:03in today's race.
00:18:04Down to the first of the Lesnos,
00:18:06a fast right-hander, medium-speed right-hander,
00:18:08you can see him struggling for grip there,
00:18:10out to the kerb.
00:18:11You've got to use the kerbs here, inside and outside,
00:18:14not so much down here at the Lesnos,
00:18:15you don't want to get too far over that kerb,
00:18:17otherwise you find yourself in the gravel.
00:18:19Now we have the long run down to the Variante Ascari,
00:18:23which is a left, right, left chicane,
00:18:27very high speed,
00:18:28and here they're going to use the kerb big time,
00:18:30especially in the dry.
00:18:31There you see him going up over the kerb,
00:18:33you've got to be so careful in the wet,
00:18:34not to upset it.
00:18:35On the exit here, on the right,
00:18:36you see a big ASGIP sign there in paint,
00:18:39very, very slippery,
00:18:40as Raikkonen and Hamilton found out yesterday.
00:18:42Long run down to Parabolica,
00:18:44it's important here to come off those Variante Ascari,
00:18:46very close behind the guy in front,
00:18:48if you want to try and overtake him into this Parabolica.
00:18:51Long, long right-hander, 180 degree corner,
00:18:53speed up all the way through,
00:18:55and again, you want to be on someone's tail,
00:18:57because the absolute best overtaking spot here
00:18:59is down to the first hairpin,
00:19:01so a lot of slipstreaming,
00:19:03a lot of drafting is going to go on,
00:19:04but of course, difficult in these wet conditions,
00:19:06because of the spray,
00:19:07you just can't see.
00:19:09Crews now clearing the grids,
00:19:10we will have a safety car start,
00:19:13and the laps behind the safety car
00:19:15will count
00:19:17toward the total of 53 laps scheduled.
00:19:21We expect the cars to roll off in a moment,
00:19:23there is so much to talk about,
00:19:24let's start with the starting grid
00:19:26for today's Italian Grand Prix.
00:19:28On row one, one of the biggest headlines of the weekend,
00:19:30Sebastian Vettel and Toro Rosso Ferrari,
00:19:33Vettel, the youngest pole sitter in Formula 1 history,
00:19:36at 21 years, 73 days,
00:19:38also the first pole for a Ferrari customer team.
00:19:41Next to Vettel, a man with a huge weight on his shoulders,
00:19:44Heikki Kovalainen of Finland for McLaren Mercedes,
00:19:46his fourth front row start of the season,
00:19:48he now looms as a critical ally
00:19:50of his teammate Lewis Hamilton's bid
00:19:52for the World Championship,
00:19:53as well as the team's Constructor Championship hopes.
00:19:56Mark Webber takes third spot in the Red Bull,
00:19:58his second best spot of the year,
00:19:59and way ahead of his average,
00:20:01he's bit by three tenths of a second,
00:20:03the time by Toro Rosso's second driver,
00:20:05Sebastian Bordet, by far his best grid spot of the year,
00:20:08both the Toro Rossos showing really good stuff,
00:20:10but look at that, Bordet has stalled on the grid.
00:20:13Let's move on to row three now,
00:20:15Nico Rosberg with the Williams Toyota,
00:20:17the 500th Grand Prix start for the Williams team,
00:20:20Rosberg tying his best grid spot of 2008
00:20:23in the five spot,
00:20:24next to him, Felipe Massa in the Ferrari,
00:20:27the only title contender to squeeze into the top ten
00:20:30in that rain splash qualifying session,
00:20:33he has a golden opportunity today.
00:20:35Jarno Trulli ran well all through qualifying,
00:20:38Q1, Q2, and Q3,
00:20:39qualifying sixth and lines up next
00:20:42to the first of the runners of two-time world champions,
00:20:45Fernando Alonso, who also had his best
00:20:48with the conditions, winner last year.
00:20:50On row five, Timo Glock in the Toyota,
00:20:53it's an all-German row,
00:20:54Toyota and Toro Rosso,
00:20:55the only teams to quit both cars in the top ten,
00:20:57when was the last time that happened?
00:20:59Next to Glock, Nick Heidfeld for BMW Sauber,
00:21:02outperforming his teammate for the second straight race,
00:21:05but only the third time this season.
00:21:07Yeah, row six, as I was going to say,
00:21:08Robert Kubica just beaten by his teammate,
00:21:10and only the third time in the whole year,
00:21:11next to him, the first of the Force India Ferraris,
00:21:14of Giancarlo Fisichella,
00:21:15I really thought that Sutil would do it,
00:21:17but the Italian rose to the occasion
00:21:18in front of his home crowd.
00:21:20On row seven, David Coulthard
00:21:21in the Red Bull Renault, the 1997 winner,
00:21:24the only Red Bull-sponsored car
00:21:25outside the top ten on the grid.
00:21:27Next to him, Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari,
00:21:30that's the worst starting position
00:21:32for a Ferrari here at Monza,
00:21:34since René Arnoux started 14th back in 1984.
00:21:37Row eight, well, who'd have thought it?
00:21:39The McLaren of championship leader, Lewis Hamilton,
00:21:42he and the team made a serious blunder in tyre choice
00:21:44and missed the best conditions of Q2,
00:21:46not making the Q3 for the first time in his career.
00:21:48Next to him, the best of the Hondas
00:21:50in the hands of two-time winner here,
00:21:52Rubens Barrichello.
00:21:53On row nine, a couple of young drivers,
00:21:55Nelson Piquet in the second Renault.
00:21:57Next to him, Kazuki Nakajima
00:21:59was to have started in the 18th spot,
00:22:01but he has started from the pit lane.
00:22:04And once again, we are underway behind the safety car.
00:22:07And the back row is made up of Jenson Button
00:22:09in the second Honda,
00:22:10who has also chosen to start from the pit lane,
00:22:12makes some adjustments to the car
00:22:13for these wet weather conditions.
00:22:14And next to him is Adrian Sutil,
00:22:16starting dead last yet again.
00:22:19Well, actually, he will have a man behind him.
00:22:21We saw Sebastien Bordet stall on the grid,
00:22:23so he will...
00:22:24Can you believe that Bordet?
00:22:25What?
00:22:26Terrible.
00:22:27Grizzly.
00:22:28Just the beginning of the twists and turns
00:22:30of what should be a very dramatic
00:22:32and eventful Italian Grand Prix.
00:22:35We should point out that the McLaren Mercedes appeal
00:22:37of Lewis Hamilton's 25-second penalty
00:22:40for cutting the chicane at Spa a week ago
00:22:42is on appeal.
00:22:43We understand that appeal will be heard a week from Monday.
00:22:46That's the Monday before the Formula 1 circuit
00:22:48travels halfway around the world
00:22:50for the first ever night race in Formula 1 history
00:22:53in Singapore.
00:22:55Bordet still struggling in the pit lane,
00:22:58a lap down to the field.
00:23:02Boy, oh boy, what a day in Monza.
00:23:04What a day for Sebastien Bordet, too.
00:23:07Great run in qualifying, and then that happens.
00:23:09Gerhard Berger turns away in disgust.
00:23:12But he still has a car in the race,
00:23:14and that car is in first place right now
00:23:17in the hands of Sebastian Vettel,
00:23:19who has led a lap for the Toro Rosso team.
00:23:22Once again, these laps do count.
00:23:24Let's have a look at our Toyota storylines
00:23:26for the Italian Grand Prix.
00:23:27Steve Matchett, get us started.
00:23:29Well, me, it's watch the weather.
00:23:30However, when we come up with this storyline,
00:23:32neither I and I suspect many of the drivers
00:23:34and engineers in the pit lane had no idea
00:23:36it would be this blatant as the race got underway.
00:23:39We need to watch for the track potentially drying
00:23:42and seeing how that will play into tyre strategy
00:23:45as the race develops.
00:23:47Well, there you see the safety cars coming in this lap.
00:23:49And look at this.
00:23:50This is Felipe Massa's absolute golden opportunity.
00:23:53He's only trailed Hamilton by two points
00:23:55for the championship.
00:23:56Hamilton is stuck down there in 15th spot on the grid,
00:23:59or 14th now with Bordet.
00:24:00But nevertheless, a long way down.
00:24:02And as you can see in these conditions,
00:24:03it's going to be very difficult to make up ground,
00:24:06apart from the fact he's got to get past
00:24:07one Kimi Räikkönen first.
00:24:09But a golden opportunity here for Felipe Massa
00:24:11to get the lead in the championship.
00:24:13Making up ground is exactly what's going to be
00:24:15on the minds of several drivers in the field,
00:24:17specifically Lewis Hamilton, Robert Kubica,
00:24:20and Kimi Räikkönen.
00:24:21Numbers one, three, and four,
00:24:22the drivers' championship with five races to go,
00:24:25including today.
00:24:26But they start outside the top ten.
00:24:29Sebastian Vettel working those tyres hard,
00:24:31almost got into Henke Kovalainen's McLaren.
00:24:35As they come off the corner,
00:24:36the safety car will come in,
00:24:37and we will be green at Monza.
00:24:40Well, Vettel legged it down there,
00:24:41got it breaking away from the group.
00:24:44Here comes Kovalainen.
00:24:46Oh, no visibility, no visibility at all.
00:24:50There's Kovalainen on the outside,
00:24:51staying out there so he can see what's going on.
00:24:53Vettel comes out to take the corner.
00:24:56Mark Webber there, Rosberg,
00:24:57and there's Felipe Massa in the first of the Ferraris.
00:25:00Nico Rosberg started fifth,
00:25:01but he has been a tiger on the first lap
00:25:03in the last seven or eight rounds of the championship,
00:25:06picking up spots on the first green flag lap.
00:25:10So this is his golden opportunity
00:25:13in the 500th Grand Prix start
00:25:15for Williams Grand Prix Engineering,
00:25:17a big day for Sir Frank and Patrick Kent.
00:25:19It is very wet out there
00:25:20and a lot of standing water,
00:25:21which, of course, even these deep groove tyres
00:25:24are not immune to.
00:25:26Lots got past Alonso,
00:25:28and so has Trulli.
00:25:32Just look at the way that spray hangs in the air
00:25:34under the trees that line this incredible track
00:25:37right down to the safety walls.
00:25:39This gives you a perfect idea.
00:25:41If you could see ahead of him,
00:25:42the flashing little red dot up ahead of him
00:25:45is another race car that's caught out ahead.
00:25:48Very difficult,
00:25:49but there's a lot of conservative driving,
00:25:51I thought, going down into that first chicane
00:25:53after the safety car pulled in.
00:25:55I was surprised they all got through.
00:25:56There were some reasonable gaps left by everybody.
00:26:00And I'm sure that the race director,
00:26:03Charlie Whiting, in the driver's briefing,
00:26:04would have had strong words about that,
00:26:06saying, you must pay attention, guys.
00:26:08You must lay back.
00:26:09We want this race to be safe
00:26:10as we start under safety car conditions.
00:26:13Robert Kubica has gotten past his teammate,
00:26:15Nick Heidfeld.
00:26:17We told you about Timo Bloch's pass.
00:26:19Everybody moved up the spot
00:26:20when Bordet had to go to the pit lane.
00:26:22Look at that.
00:26:23I was on board Lewis Hamilton
00:26:24as following Kimi Räikkönen.
00:26:25I mean, you can see absolutely diddly squat.
00:26:28And look at the whole Sebastian Vettel.
00:26:30He's driving very well.
00:26:31Ron Dennis had some unkind words
00:26:33to say about his qualifying.
00:26:34He said, well, he's probably carrying too much wing.
00:26:36It'll hurt him in the dry.
00:26:37Well, luckily for Rob Vettel,
00:26:39it ain't dry and it's not hurting him one bit.
00:26:41No, carrying wing is a very good thing right about now.
00:26:44Here's Fernando Alonso in the middle.
00:26:46He gets back past Timo Bloch.
00:26:48He's got Jarno Trulli and the other Toyota ahead of him.
00:26:52Boy, it's hard to overstate.
00:26:53Here comes Bloch back on the inside
00:26:55of a two-time world champion.
00:26:56In these conditions,
00:26:57it's hard to overstate the difficulty
00:26:59of what these men are doing.
00:27:01Whoa, whoa.
00:27:03Oh!
00:27:04That was too much erosion.
00:27:06The drivers in one of the pre-race briefings
00:27:08were given a lecture by FIA race director Charlie Whiting.
00:27:12They asked for clarification
00:27:13about if you shortcut a chicane and gain position,
00:27:16how do you legitimately make it back?
00:27:18That's the hurdle that Lewis Hamilton fell over in Spa.
00:27:22Whiting told them, go at least one more corner,
00:27:25give back the position,
00:27:26go one more corner,
00:27:27and then you are free to race again.
00:27:29Yeah, well, that's cool,
00:27:30like shutting the door after a horse's balls.
00:27:33I'll tell you what now,
00:27:35Jarno Trulli is catching up,
00:27:37Felipe Massa, I think.
00:27:38Another good wet-weather driver is, of course,
00:27:40Fernando Alonso, who we're looking at there.
00:27:42He's pretty good in the wet.
00:27:43Timo Bloch seems to be good in the wet.
00:27:45Vettel, we know, is good in the wet,
00:27:46and we also know, of course,
00:27:47that Lewis Hamilton is very good in the wet.
00:27:50Räikkönen, I think,
00:27:51is very good in the wet.
00:27:53Lewis Hamilton is very good in the wet.
00:27:55Räikkönen, uh...
00:27:58This is a replay,
00:27:59David Coulthard going by,
00:28:00home favorite.
00:28:01...in the Force India car.
00:28:03Right.
00:28:05And there you see, right behind him,
00:28:06Räikkönen and Hamilton.
00:28:07Look at the view from Hamilton's car.
00:28:09Oh, boy, he's got wheels to his left, too.
00:28:11He went part...
00:28:12Oh, he's...
00:28:14No, Dice is going to have to let him go by again.
00:28:16There they go.
00:28:17There they go.
00:28:18Properly done.
00:28:21Meanwhile...
00:28:22Yeah.
00:28:23Look at Sebastian Vettel,
00:28:24who has perfect conditions,
00:28:26all things considered.
00:28:27Well, he can see.
00:28:28That's the big advantage he's got.
00:28:29And the other big advantage of what we believe
00:28:31is he is very light on fuel.
00:28:33We're on board with Kimi Räikkönen now.
00:28:35Kimi Räikkönen's Ferrari.
00:28:36Giorgio Ascanelli,
00:28:37the technical director on Toro Rosso,
00:28:39was very open in saying that Vettel is running light.
00:28:42We're very light.
00:28:43We're very light.
00:28:44Well, he may be light,
00:28:45but that's certainly giving him an advantage right now.
00:28:49He's also got a 3.7 second advantage
00:28:51over second place Heikki Kovalainen,
00:28:53then Mark Webber,
00:28:54Nico Rosberg,
00:28:55Felipe Massa,
00:28:56now fifth,
00:28:57but he hasn't passed anybody.
00:28:59Jarno Trulli, sixth,
00:29:00Fernando Alonso, seventh,
00:29:01Timo Block, eighth,
00:29:02followed by Robert Kubica
00:29:04and Nick Heidfeld
00:29:05of the two BMW Sauers.
00:29:09Steve, as you say,
00:29:10very surprising that Giorgio Ascanelli
00:29:11was so open about that.
00:29:12And, of course,
00:29:13the other side of that story
00:29:14is whether or not he's saying that,
00:29:15because, in fact,
00:29:16Vettel's got quite a lot of fuel on
00:29:17and he just wants to mislead people.
00:29:19And I say that also because
00:29:21Mark Webber was saying yesterday
00:29:22they've done a lot of calculation
00:29:24on Vettel's fuel load
00:29:25and they came to the conclusion,
00:29:26that's the Red Bull engineers,
00:29:28that Vettel has just as much fuel on board
00:29:30as Webber and Kovalainen.
00:29:31But, of course, we'll see.
00:29:33Well, it's interesting you say that, Peter,
00:29:35because I was talking to a Renault engineer
00:29:37earlier on this morning
00:29:38about Vettel's projected stop,
00:29:40and they were suggesting around lap 20.
00:29:42Well, that figure of lap 20
00:29:43is not particularly early.
00:29:46The graphic at the upper left of your screen
00:29:48shows us the change from grid position
00:29:50to the current running order.
00:29:51And you saw that.
00:29:52Basically, fourth place through tenth place.
00:29:54Kimi Raikkonen here.
00:29:55Four days.
00:29:56Getting a real good tow for Fisichella.
00:29:58He'd dearly love to get around Fisichella,
00:30:00because that puts a daylight
00:30:01between himself and Lewis Hamilton.
00:30:03And where are they?
00:30:04They're coming now.
00:30:05He couldn't pull it off.
00:30:09Kimi Raikkonen, of course,
00:30:10a great wet weather driver,
00:30:11but he didn't have much luck
00:30:12last week in Spa.
00:30:14And he had very little luck at Silverson.
00:30:16The wet weather driver of the year
00:30:18at Silverson, by far,
00:30:19was Lewis Hamilton.
00:30:21But both Massa and the Ferrari
00:30:24of Kimi Raikkonen did not do well.
00:30:26Here's the running order
00:30:27across the bottom of your screen.
00:30:28How important is it to be able to see well?
00:30:30Consider the first two laps
00:30:32under green conditions in this race.
00:30:34Sebastian Vettel, who was up there
00:30:37with a clean visor in first place,
00:30:40was nearly nine miles an hour
00:30:42quicker than anybody else
00:30:43in the speed traps
00:30:44on those first two laps.
00:30:45I just illustrated Raikkonen's
00:30:46front wing there, guys.
00:30:47It's a tear-off visor
00:30:48or some plastic bag or something
00:30:50hanging on to the main plane
00:30:52of the Ferrari's wing,
00:30:53which is covering the slot gap
00:30:55between the main plane
00:30:56and the flat behind.
00:30:57You can see it right here, look.
00:30:59Well, you know,
00:31:00you're going to need all the downforce
00:31:01you can get around here.
00:31:02And that gap,
00:31:03keeping the gap maintained on the wing
00:31:06makes a big difference
00:31:07to the aero-efficiency of the car.
00:31:09It may not look much,
00:31:10but it will be affecting
00:31:11the stability of the Ferrari.
00:31:12And it will affect the temperatures
00:31:14if it gets into the radiator
00:31:15and lets up those side pipes.
00:31:16I'm surprised that Vettel
00:31:17is pulling out so much on Kovalainen.
00:31:19Kovalainen's pretty good in the wet,
00:31:20and of course, he's only got
00:31:21that one car spray in front of him,
00:31:23unlike the rest of the field,
00:31:24who's got the whole,
00:31:26the whole, you know,
00:31:28spray in front of him.
00:31:30Yeah.
00:31:31On to the front stretch.
00:31:32Now, if you're wondering
00:31:33whether someone might gamble
00:31:34with an intermediate tire,
00:31:35you should know that this was
00:31:36a mandatory full wet tire.
00:31:38Thibaut Glock spins the Toyota
00:31:40in the first chicane.
00:31:42L'Ariante del Retofilio.
00:31:47And the Kubica goes by.
00:31:50Everyone
00:31:52started on the extreme wet tires.
00:31:54Now, if the rain stops
00:31:55and the line begins to dry out,
00:31:58all bets are off.
00:32:00Yeah, it's very difficult
00:32:02to try and gauge a strategy
00:32:03in this race,
00:32:04because look at this water.
00:32:05What do you do here?
00:32:06There's certainly no question
00:32:07of the track drying out
00:32:08to become intermediate tires
00:32:09right now.
00:32:10But...
00:32:12Peter?
00:32:14Well, Bob,
00:32:15the rain actually did stop
00:32:16as the safety car set off.
00:32:17Ironically,
00:32:18that's been that sort of weekend
00:32:19here at Monza.
00:32:20It's not raining now.
00:32:21And had that rule not been in place,
00:32:23I would suspect
00:32:24that somebody at the back
00:32:25might even have taken the gamble
00:32:26of running intermediates
00:32:27at that point,
00:32:28with the Bridgestone wet,
00:32:29as we are supposed to call it.
00:32:30Because the rain has stopped
00:32:31and it looks as if,
00:32:32dare I say it,
00:32:33it is clearing up a little bit.
00:32:36But still a lot of water
00:32:37on the track,
00:32:38and it's going to take a long time
00:32:39to clear.
00:32:40But, of course,
00:32:41these tires,
00:32:42these heavily grooved tires,
00:32:43they're like a gear pump.
00:32:44They actually pump
00:32:45hundreds of gallons a minute.
00:32:47Wow!
00:32:48Oh, the race leader...
00:32:49Oh, don't run over
00:32:50those sleeping policemen
00:32:51in the chicane.
00:32:52They won't do the bottom
00:32:53of the car any good.
00:32:54But Sebastian Vettel
00:32:55at the moment
00:32:56got a nice,
00:32:57nearly six-second lead
00:32:58over Heikki Kovalainen.
00:33:00You see the gaps.
00:33:02Now, if the race leader
00:33:03runs over the chicane,
00:33:04he doesn't interfere
00:33:05with anybody else's race,
00:33:06cannot drop back
00:33:07and concede a corner
00:33:08and give an advantage
00:33:09to anybody else.
00:33:10But he still made
00:33:11some time on track.
00:33:12How did race control
00:33:13deal with that?
00:33:14Don't ask awkward questions.
00:33:15Well, there was
00:33:16an interesting situation.
00:33:17I'm glad you brought
00:33:18that up, Steve.
00:33:19David Coulthard said,
00:33:20at Spa last week,
00:33:22I was just flat-passed
00:33:23by...
00:33:24I can't remember
00:33:25who the malefactor was.
00:33:26Maybe I shouldn't say.
00:33:27By a driver
00:33:28going through the chicane.
00:33:30But he was running
00:33:31deep in the pack.
00:33:32He said,
00:33:33I called it in.
00:33:34The team went to
00:33:35Charlie Whiting.
00:33:36Charlie said,
00:33:37there's no video evidence,
00:33:38so they did nothing.
00:33:39I mean,
00:33:40what are the corner marshals
00:33:41there for?
00:33:42But to Raikkonen,
00:33:43Raikkonen,
00:33:44no.
00:33:45Fischer-Geller
00:33:46holding him off again.
00:33:47Boy, I thought,
00:33:48I thought Raikkonen
00:33:49had got in there.
00:33:50Here comes Hamilton.
00:33:51Here comes Hamilton,
00:33:52trying to go down the inside
00:33:53as they come to Lesmos.
00:33:54Oh!
00:33:56Wow, that was close.
00:33:59Boy, I thought
00:34:00he got in there.
00:34:02Now, is he going to be able
00:34:03to get a draft down
00:34:04to the Variante Ascari?
00:34:06And get a bit of a toe-by.
00:34:08Meanwhile,
00:34:09that Indian horse,
00:34:10Indy Car,
00:34:11Fischer-Geller,
00:34:12keeps hammering along there.
00:34:14In 11th spot.
00:34:18You can see that dry line
00:34:19forming slightly,
00:34:20but a little bit early,
00:34:21I'd think,
00:34:22yet to put intermediates on.
00:34:23Yeah.
00:34:24But it's still
00:34:25very, very wet.
00:34:26Anywhere
00:34:27slightly off that line.
00:34:31Giancarlo Fischer-Geller
00:34:32ties Andrea de Cesaris
00:34:34in the 208th start
00:34:36this weekend.
00:34:38Was I right?
00:34:39209th.
00:34:40Looking for a contract
00:34:42for next year.
00:34:43Apparently,
00:34:44the Force India team
00:34:45will stay with the drivers
00:34:46they've got.
00:34:47Giancarlo Fischer-Geller
00:34:48and Adrian Sutil.
00:34:50On board with
00:34:51Nico Rosberg.
00:34:55So desperate,
00:34:56the conditions here.
00:34:57Looks like Raikkonen
00:34:58will get by Fischer-Geller.
00:34:59We'll take a break
00:35:00and return
00:35:01to Wet Monza.
00:35:05Back live to Monza.
00:35:06The Italian Grand Prix
00:35:07live here on Speed.
00:35:09Let's listen to
00:35:10Sebastian Vettel's radio.
00:35:19The engineer asking
00:35:20for a balance report
00:35:21on the car.
00:35:22Sebastian Vettel
00:35:23leads for
00:35:24Toro Rosso Ferrari.
00:35:26We expect
00:35:27he's light on fuel
00:35:28and will be among
00:35:29the first to make
00:35:30a pit stop.
00:35:31But as you can see,
00:35:32very little spray
00:35:33in parts of the track
00:35:34off of those
00:35:35treaded wet weather tires.
00:35:36So the conditions
00:35:37appear to be improving.
00:35:39Until you see
00:35:40this picture.
00:35:41Oh yeah?
00:35:42Thank you very much,
00:35:43Mr. Director.
00:35:44I'm glad you think
00:35:45they're improving.
00:35:46That's right.
00:35:47Periscope.
00:35:48I guess everything's
00:35:49relative.
00:35:50Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa,
00:35:51whoa, whoa.
00:35:53Oh, well, they get
00:35:54that sorted out.
00:35:55The puddles of water
00:35:56and the wheels
00:35:57are trying to
00:35:58slow the car down.
00:35:59They hit a puddle of water.
00:36:00I mean, they just lock
00:36:01instantly.
00:36:03Force India
00:36:05car of Giancarlo
00:36:06Fisichella.
00:36:07That left Lewis Hamilton
00:36:08behind.
00:36:09And this was the run down
00:36:10to the Parabolica
00:36:11as Fisichella
00:36:12blocked Hamilton's
00:36:13McLaren
00:36:15as much as he could.
00:36:16Blocked big time.
00:36:17I'm sure the
00:36:18FIA officials
00:36:19will be looking at
00:36:21because that is
00:36:22strictly a no-no.
00:36:23But
00:36:24Hamilton came off
00:36:25the Parabolica quicker.
00:36:26Got in the toe.
00:36:27Pulled out.
00:36:28And now here's
00:36:29Hamilton making the
00:36:30pass on the Ferrari
00:36:31of Kimi Räikkönen.
00:36:34Well, the Tifosi
00:36:35won't like that.
00:36:36This is for 11th.
00:36:39They'll have to
00:36:40black flag him for something now.
00:36:41Steady on, lads.
00:36:45So the order is now
00:36:46Vettel, Kovalainen,
00:36:47Weber,
00:36:48Rosberg,
00:36:49Massa,
00:36:50Trulli, Alonso
00:36:51and Kubica
00:36:52in the points.
00:36:53Then Timo Glock,
00:36:54Nick Heidfeld
00:36:55and now
00:36:56Lewis Hamilton
00:36:57in 11th.
00:36:58Well, the Ferraris
00:36:59for some reason
00:37:00this year, Steve,
00:37:01you'd know more about this
00:37:02than we would.
00:37:03They just don't seem
00:37:04to be very good
00:37:05in the wet.
00:37:06They somehow can't get
00:37:07the heat in the tyres
00:37:08or whatever it is
00:37:09they need.
00:37:11Yeah, you're right.
00:37:12They seem to be struggling.
00:37:13Well, it just highlights again
00:37:14the difference
00:37:15in the chassis.
00:37:17Boy, I'll tell you what.
00:37:18That was a brave pass
00:37:19coming out of that
00:37:20De La Rosa chicane there.
00:37:21It goes down the inside.
00:37:22Wheels spinning everywhere.
00:37:23It goes down the inside
00:37:24into that first
00:37:26Lesmo curve.
00:37:28This is the other Ferrari
00:37:29Felipe Massa
00:37:30running 5th.
00:37:31Ahead of him is
00:37:32Nico Rosberg
00:37:33in the Williams Toyota
00:37:34in 4th.
00:37:37You know, Steve,
00:37:38there's another element here.
00:37:39We talked on Friday
00:37:40about how Ferrari
00:37:41had come to this circuit
00:37:42with their
00:37:43heavy brake
00:37:44carbon industry setup
00:37:45as distinct from
00:37:46their normal Brembos.
00:37:47This will have been
00:37:48the first time
00:37:49they've run those
00:37:50carbon industry brakes
00:37:51in the wet in anger.
00:37:52And...
00:37:57Go ahead, Peter.
00:38:00Hello, radio transmission there
00:38:01for Nico Rosberg.
00:38:02No, I'm just going to say
00:38:03just finishing that
00:38:04that, you know,
00:38:05it is the first time
00:38:06Ferrari will have run
00:38:07those carbon industry
00:38:08and everybody who runs them
00:38:09says they are difficult brakes
00:38:10to get to work in the wet
00:38:11so that could be
00:38:12one of the factors
00:38:13that Ferrari are looking at today.
00:38:15Yeah, and as we've said
00:38:16in Friday's practice
00:38:17and in qualifying
00:38:18in the wet,
00:38:19keeping these brakes
00:38:20although you don't use the brakes
00:38:21an awful lot around here
00:38:22a vast majority of the time
00:38:24you're on full throttle
00:38:25or could be
00:38:26if you get sufficient traction
00:38:27you must keep
00:38:28the core temperature
00:38:29of those brakes
00:38:30up to temperature
00:38:31so that when you do
00:38:32stamp on them
00:38:33the initial bite is right there.
00:38:34Well...
00:38:36Here's another replay
00:38:37of Hamilton passing Raikkonen.
00:38:38Boy, I'll tell you what
00:38:39he was on the wet side
00:38:40of the track.
00:38:41Raikkonen there
00:38:42nice pass
00:38:43couple of really professional
00:38:44drivers there
00:38:45keeping out of each other's way.
00:38:46Here comes Massa
00:38:47going to go around
00:38:48the outside
00:38:49big toe from
00:38:50Rosberg
00:38:51as he goes around the outside
00:38:52into the chicane.
00:38:53He'd better have brakes now.
00:38:55Exactly, yeah.
00:38:56Wheel to wheel
00:38:57well done.
00:38:59It's not over.
00:39:00Here comes Rosberg.
00:39:02Wow!
00:39:03Terrific!
00:39:04Beautiful driving
00:39:05by both guys.
00:39:06I'm sure Massa
00:39:07will be thinking
00:39:08where's my traction control?
00:39:09He's on the inside now
00:39:10coming down to the
00:39:11corner of the grande.
00:39:15Williams moves over
00:39:16to seize the line
00:39:17we have a local yellow flag
00:39:18for some reason.
00:39:19Sidewise!
00:39:20The Ferrari attacks
00:39:21and Rosberg
00:39:22alertly avoided contact.
00:39:25You see the sign
00:39:26where the local yellow is
00:39:27down in the Parabolica.
00:39:28We understand it's
00:39:29Giancarlo Fisichella
00:39:30in the Force India Ferrari.
00:39:34Rosberg comes under attack
00:39:36from Jarno Trulli
00:39:37in one of the factory.
00:39:38That was a terrific bit of driving
00:39:39by both guys
00:39:40Massa and Rosberg
00:39:41and now of course
00:39:42that's let Rosberg
00:39:43fall back into the clutches
00:39:44of Jarno Trulli.
00:39:46While we're watching this
00:39:47while we're watching
00:39:48Massa and the Ferrari
00:39:49I'll just tell you
00:39:50the gap to Vettel
00:39:51and Kovalainen
00:39:52is now 7.6 seconds.
00:39:54Kovalainen is trying
00:39:55to respond
00:39:56he just went purple
00:39:57posted the fastest
00:39:58first sector time.
00:39:59Oh!
00:40:00Oh!
00:40:01Got his front wing
00:40:02Fisichella's front wing
00:40:03on the back of the Red Bull.
00:40:04Oh!
00:40:05And then it came off
00:40:06entirely at the other end.
00:40:07Yeah.
00:40:08It tells you something
00:40:09about the aero force
00:40:10on those bits.
00:40:11Wow!
00:40:12David Coulthard
00:40:13I tell you what
00:40:14he got in front of him
00:40:15it almost looked to me
00:40:16like he brake checked him.
00:40:17Anyway let's go back down
00:40:18this is this incredible pass
00:40:19by Massa over Rosberg
00:40:20which he just really
00:40:21crunched over the kerb there
00:40:23but it worked
00:40:24he pulled it off
00:40:25and I'm sure
00:40:26he'll pull away now.
00:40:27It wasn't very elegant
00:40:28but it did work.
00:40:29It wasn't elegant at all
00:40:30but it did work.
00:40:32I'm worried about
00:40:33all that debris
00:40:34left on the track
00:40:35by Fisichella's
00:40:36front wing disintegrating
00:40:37Sebastian Bourdais
00:40:38in the Toro Rosso
00:40:40was the first man
00:40:41on the scene.
00:40:42I like that
00:40:43he should have mounted
00:40:44flex on the side plates
00:40:45on the end plates
00:40:46of the rear wing.
00:40:47This is Hamilton
00:40:48coming up the back
00:40:49of Nick Hyde's belt.
00:40:54Sebastian Bourdais
00:40:55showing his one lap down
00:40:56in 19th.
00:41:06That's right
00:41:07Lewis Hamilton
00:41:08just goes right under.
00:41:11Tell you what
00:41:12Lewis Hamilton on the brakes
00:41:13is really quite extraordinary
00:41:15I know that people
00:41:16keep on about
00:41:17me being pro-Hamilton
00:41:18and all that sort of thing
00:41:19but on the braking
00:41:20wet or dry
00:41:21I mean he is
00:41:22absolutely
00:41:23the monster.
00:41:25On board with
00:41:26Massa.
00:41:29Oh no.
00:41:31Is that coming by?
00:41:32It's Rosberg going by.
00:41:35Wow.
00:41:36Did they rule that
00:41:37he missed the chicane
00:41:38on that pass
00:41:39that we just admired
00:41:40so much?
00:41:42And so the Ferrari
00:41:43gives the position back.
00:41:44Meanwhile this is Hamilton
00:41:47taking Nick Hyde's belt
00:41:49for 10th.
00:41:53Now there's Robert Kubica
00:41:55and look at that debris
00:41:56all those shards of
00:41:57Giancarlo Fisichello's
00:41:58front wing on the
00:41:59racetrack right there
00:42:00at the entrance
00:42:01to the Parabolica.
00:42:03This is Massa
00:42:04now re-attacking
00:42:06Rosberg and the Williams
00:42:07for 4th.
00:42:08Boy look at the
00:42:09straight line speed
00:42:10on the Ferrari there
00:42:11just absolutely
00:42:12ate him alive.
00:42:14Big wing difference
00:42:15between the Ferrari
00:42:16and the Williams
00:42:17if you look at that
00:42:18look at the rear
00:42:19main plate on the car.
00:42:20Very significant
00:42:22increase in wing
00:42:24on the Williams
00:42:25which is giving him
00:42:26a little bit more stability
00:42:27through the slow speed
00:42:28corners through the chicanes
00:42:29but right there where
00:42:30you need it coming down
00:42:31the straight
00:42:32you do.
00:42:33Here comes Jarno Trulli
00:42:34in the second Toyota
00:42:35with Fernando Alonso
00:42:36in the Renault
00:42:37just behind him.
00:42:38Meanwhile up front
00:42:39Sebastian Vettel
00:42:40one and a half seconds
00:42:41quicker than the McLaren
00:42:42of Henke Kovalainen
00:42:43in 2nd.
00:42:44The gap almost
00:42:4510 seconds now
00:42:461st to 2nd.
00:42:48Welcome back live
00:42:49to Monza
00:42:50there's Robert Kubica's
00:42:51BMW Sauber
00:42:52with Lewis Hamilton's
00:42:54McLaren just behind him
00:42:55that's for 8th place
00:42:57and Hamilton
00:42:58the championship leader
00:42:59by 2 coming in
00:43:00could hoist himself
00:43:01back into the points
00:43:02from his 15th
00:43:03starting position.
00:43:04Behind him
00:43:05you see Timo Glock
00:43:06in the Toyota
00:43:07Hamilton got Glock
00:43:08while we were in break
00:43:09and then edged
00:43:10the Toyota over
00:43:11in fact Glock
00:43:12had his left side wheels
00:43:13on the grass
00:43:14in the Curva Grande.
00:43:16I think Lewis Hamilton
00:43:17might be looking
00:43:18for some wet tracky
00:43:19you know to warm
00:43:20cool down those tyres.
00:43:21Watch this.
00:43:24Well Hamilton
00:43:25didn't move
00:43:26Glock really just tried
00:43:27to go around the outside
00:43:28and there wasn't
00:43:29any room there.
00:43:31I suspect
00:43:32those guys probably
00:43:33have a different opinion.
00:43:35The Toyota crew
00:43:36having a coronary.
00:43:37Well I tell you what guys
00:43:38to me
00:43:39the track looks like
00:43:40it's beginning to dry
00:43:41in certain places
00:43:42and a few cars
00:43:43trying to find
00:43:44the wet on the track
00:43:45to keep these wet
00:43:46weather tyres damp.
00:43:48Now we're on lap 16
00:43:49expect that pit stop
00:43:50when it's open.
00:43:51Oh Hamilton
00:43:52around the outside
00:43:53on the inside
00:43:54for the
00:43:56Variante.
00:43:58Yeah there again
00:43:59that braking thing
00:44:00and he and Kubic
00:44:01big pals
00:44:02race a lot
00:44:03in go-karts together
00:44:04and in the lesser former
00:44:05on the way up through
00:44:06so those who know
00:44:07each other well
00:44:08and they're very friendly
00:44:09that was a terrific pass.
00:44:11Michael Schumacher
00:44:12looking on
00:44:14now while we were
00:44:15talking about that
00:44:16Rubens Vatikello
00:44:17has brought the Honda
00:44:18to the pit lane
00:44:19from 16th.
00:44:21More rain expected
00:44:22in 5 minutes
00:44:23and it will be
00:44:24for a long time
00:44:25more rain in 5 minutes
00:44:26for a long time.
00:44:28Well if that's the case
00:44:29that will answer
00:44:30the question I was about
00:44:31to pose
00:44:32when you make that decision
00:44:33to come in for inters
00:44:34if they're looking
00:44:35for a wet light now
00:44:36I guess they're not
00:44:37going to do that.
00:44:38Oh and there was a replay there
00:44:39that was just a
00:44:40beautifully judged pass.
00:44:41Obviously Lewis Hamilton
00:44:42being very careful
00:44:43not to go off the track.
00:44:44And this McLaren David
00:44:45it just works so well
00:44:46over the kerbs as well
00:44:47I mean it's terrific.
00:44:49It's incredible
00:44:50over the kerb
00:44:51and it breaks
00:44:52and it stops so well
00:44:53and of course
00:44:54what Peter said
00:44:55maybe the Ferrari
00:44:56who put those
00:44:57different brakes on
00:44:58are finding that
00:44:59they're just not
00:45:00getting up to temperature
00:45:01because the temperature
00:45:02dropped today a lot
00:45:03it's a lot cooler
00:45:04than it's been
00:45:05apart from the fact
00:45:06that it's raining as well
00:45:07which is not helping
00:45:08that temperature.
00:45:09But here's the man
00:45:10at the moment
00:45:11I don't, you know
00:45:12really irrespective
00:45:13of how much fuel
00:45:14this guy's got on board now
00:45:15he and the team
00:45:16are just doing
00:45:17stellar work.
00:45:19Well Lewis Hamilton's
00:45:20last lap was a 35.2
00:45:22Vettel's last lap
00:45:23was a 35.6
00:45:25and Kovalainen's last lap
00:45:26was a 35.8
00:45:28So old Phil Massa here
00:45:29has got the hammer down
00:45:30trying to catch up
00:45:31with Mark Webber
00:45:32who is 11 seconds
00:45:33in front of him.
00:45:34Yeah but he's taken
00:45:35a couple of seconds off
00:45:36in the last two laps
00:45:37so Massa is going to
00:45:38close up on Mark Webber.
00:45:39I was just thinking
00:45:40of Rubens Barrichello
00:45:41I hope they saw
00:45:42the same weather report
00:45:43and they didn't send
00:45:44the Honda back out
00:45:45on intermediate.
00:45:46Well funny enough Bob
00:45:47I was just wondering
00:45:48whether or not all the teams
00:45:49are in agreement with Renault.
00:45:50There's nothing to say
00:45:51that some of these teams
00:45:52up and down the pit lane
00:45:53may have a different
00:45:54weather forecast.
00:45:55Well Vettel's guys
00:45:56Vettel's guys said
00:45:57a few moments ago
00:45:58that it was going
00:45:59to rain again.
00:46:00Race leader is in
00:46:01Sebastian Vettel
00:46:02pits on lap 19.
00:46:03We'll see what tyres
00:46:04he puts on.
00:46:05Well he's the first two pit
00:46:06on lap 18
00:46:07he wasn't that light
00:46:08was he?
00:46:09No.
00:46:10We saw the team
00:46:11playing with
00:46:12full wet.
00:46:13Extreme wet.
00:46:14Yeah we can see it
00:46:15later on the tyre wall.
00:46:16They fully expect
00:46:17it to rain again.
00:46:18Nice stop boys.
00:46:19Very good stop.
00:46:20Nice job all round.
00:46:21There goes Felipe Massa.
00:46:22Based on the available
00:46:23evidence they can play
00:46:24it conservatively
00:46:25because they seem
00:46:26to have the speed.
00:46:27Felipe Massa's just set
00:46:28the fastest lap
00:46:29of the race
00:46:30at 34.789.
00:46:31Vettel rejoins
00:46:32in fourth.
00:46:33He's got to be careful
00:46:34getting those tyres
00:46:35to work.
00:46:36Here comes
00:46:37Hamilton.
00:46:38Oh!
00:46:39That was close.
00:46:40They touched
00:46:41surely didn't they?
00:46:42I think they did.
00:46:43That was for seven.
00:46:46Oh and Hamilton
00:46:47got the line
00:46:48he didn't want.
00:46:49Alonso's going to try
00:46:50him off the corner
00:46:51but he hasn't got
00:46:52the horsepower.
00:46:53I blinked
00:46:54at the perfect
00:46:55wrong moment there
00:46:56but I'm sure
00:46:57I saw contact
00:46:58on those two cars.
00:47:01It certainly
00:47:02looked like it
00:47:03didn't it?
00:47:08One of the Toyotas
00:47:09this is the team
00:47:10of luck.
00:47:12Somebody going
00:47:13across the chicane
00:47:14that must be
00:47:15must be Kubica.
00:47:16So he gives
00:47:17the spot back.
00:47:23So Hamilton's
00:47:24now up to seven.
00:47:28After Pitstop
00:47:29Massa
00:47:30Kovalainen
00:47:31must be leading
00:47:32from Webber
00:47:33and Massa
00:47:34who's third.
00:47:38That was so seriously
00:47:39late braking there.
00:47:43I hope that's not
00:47:44what he's seeing
00:47:45through there
00:47:46Weiser.
00:47:47I'm sure it's not.
00:47:48Don't forget
00:47:49the camera's up higher
00:47:50the windscreen
00:47:51will be helping him
00:47:52a little bit.
00:47:53Here you see that
00:47:54uh
00:47:55Oh well
00:47:56maybe not touched.
00:47:57When we said
00:47:58touched
00:47:59we meant
00:48:00did not touch.
00:48:02No we didn't
00:48:03we just didn't say it.
00:48:04Here's what it
00:48:05looked like from
00:48:06our perspective.
00:48:11Yeah
00:48:12but very
00:48:13very close.
00:48:14That's what you call
00:48:15a ruthless bit of
00:48:16overtaking.
00:48:17I wish they'd let that
00:48:18video play because
00:48:19I think Hamilton
00:48:20found himself
00:48:21on the line he didn't want
00:48:23to recover as well
00:48:24as he'd like.
00:48:26Still down there
00:48:27in
00:48:28in P11
00:48:29or 12.
00:48:30I mean he just can't
00:48:31seem to make the
00:48:32headway through the
00:48:33field that Lewis
00:48:34Hamilton's making
00:48:35Lewis got stuck
00:48:36behind uh
00:48:37Heidfeldt there.
00:48:38Here's the order
00:48:39across the bottom of
00:48:40your screen.
00:48:41For the line in
00:48:42Weber, Massa,
00:48:43Vettel, Rosberg,
00:48:44Trulli, Hamilton,
00:48:45Alonso, Brock and
00:48:46Kubica in the top 10.
00:48:47Then Heidfeldt
00:48:48and Raikkonen
00:48:49as you mentioned David
00:48:50not able to make
00:48:51much headway.
00:48:57Kubica
00:48:58just leading his
00:48:59teammate Nick
00:49:00Heidfeldt
00:49:01which is what he
00:49:02usually does
00:49:03but boy
00:49:04was I thought he
00:49:05was in these wet
00:49:06conditions.
00:49:07It certainly is
00:49:08drying out and
00:49:09it certainly is
00:49:10obviously they get
00:49:11the weather forecast
00:49:12we're not.
00:49:13It's still pretty
00:49:14wet in places
00:49:15and all the teams
00:49:16are talking about
00:49:17it's going to rain
00:49:18again in the next
00:49:19few minutes.
00:49:20And we're just
00:49:21hearing now
00:49:22yeah it's starting
00:49:23to rain harder.
00:49:24Well this has
00:49:25made the decision
00:49:26clear you have to
00:49:27stay on these
00:49:28extreme wets
00:49:29but it would have
00:49:30been nice from a
00:49:31strategic point of
00:49:32view just to
00:49:33slip his old
00:49:34neck because they
00:49:35get covered in
00:49:36paint.
00:49:37And that's the
00:49:38Ascari corner.
00:49:39That's where for
00:49:40two years now
00:49:41you go back to
00:49:42his heavy crash
00:49:43there in practice
00:49:44for last year's
00:49:45race.
00:49:46Raikkonen
00:49:47spun there in
00:49:48qualifying yesterday.
00:49:49I'll tell you what
00:49:50though guys
00:49:51we're expecting
00:49:52rain and just
00:49:53hearing it's
00:49:54beginning to rain
00:49:55in the pit lane
00:49:56but prior to that
00:49:57Massa just says
00:49:58fastest lap
00:49:5935.4.
00:50:00A whole string
00:50:01of personal best
00:50:02by our should say
00:50:03was beginning to
00:50:04dry.
00:50:05Massa's timing
00:50:06Massa's lap there
00:50:07was significantly
00:50:08quicker than
00:50:09anybody else
00:50:10over a second
00:50:11quicker than
00:50:12Weber or
00:50:13Kovalainen who
00:50:14are in front of him.
00:50:15But behind Massa
00:50:16Vettel did a
00:50:1735.4.
00:50:18It's about a
00:50:19second slower than
00:50:20Massa but a second
00:50:21quicker than the
00:50:22two guys ahead of
00:50:23Massa.
00:50:24There's Glock and
00:50:25Fernando Alonso.
00:50:26Fernando Alonso
00:50:27let him go through
00:50:28there.
00:50:29He wasn't going to
00:50:30argue with that.
00:50:31On the inside of
00:50:32Alonso and Alonso
00:50:33could do nothing
00:50:34about it.
00:50:35Alonso's out of
00:50:36the points.
00:50:38He's fallen out of
00:50:39the points.
00:50:40Perhaps his tyres
00:50:41are completely
00:50:42shot.
00:50:44Yeah he's just a
00:50:45sitting duck there
00:50:46for that pass.
00:50:50Well we expect
00:50:51a lot of action
00:50:52in the pit lane.
00:50:53We'll take a quick
00:50:54break and return live
00:50:55for more from
00:50:56Magic Monza.
00:50:57The Italian Grand Prix
00:50:58continues here on
00:50:59Speed.
00:51:02Welcome back to
00:51:03Monza.
00:51:04Heikki Kovalainen
00:51:05is in the pits and
00:51:06he's leading a parade.
00:51:07Mark Webber has the
00:51:08Red Bull from second.
00:51:09Felipe Massa's Ferrari
00:51:10from third.
00:51:11And Sebastian Bordet
00:51:12hits the pit lane
00:51:13in the Toro Rosso
00:51:14from 19th.
00:51:15Extreme wets going
00:51:16on all these cars.
00:51:17A lot of fuel going
00:51:18into Massa's car
00:51:19at the top of the
00:51:20screen there.
00:51:22Good time at the
00:51:23one stop.
00:51:24They do use
00:51:25less fuel around
00:51:26here.
00:51:27Now here comes
00:51:28Hamilton past
00:51:29Trulli again.
00:51:30Pulls up on
00:51:31Rosberg.
00:51:32Just as all those
00:51:33cars pile out of
00:51:34the pit lane.
00:51:36Kovalainen comes out
00:51:37behind Glock.
00:51:38Massa last of that
00:51:39group.
00:51:40So he's going to
00:51:41have traffic ahead of
00:51:42him.
00:51:43Beginning with his
00:51:44teammate,
00:51:45T.B.
00:51:46Raikkonen.
00:51:47Mark Webber there
00:51:48behind one of the
00:51:49BMWs that come out
00:51:50of the chicane.
00:51:51Yeah in these wet
00:51:52conditions you can
00:51:53take about 10%
00:51:54off the fuel
00:51:55consumption.
00:51:56Typically around
00:51:57here it's about 2.7
00:51:58kilos.
00:52:00Jenson Button
00:52:01hits the pit lane
00:52:02from 17th in the
00:52:03Honda.
00:52:04Lewis Hamilton
00:52:05eating about 2
00:52:06seconds on that
00:52:07one lap.
00:52:08Half a second on
00:52:09that.
00:52:10Lost a tenth on
00:52:11the third.
00:52:12So basically
00:52:13catching up big
00:52:14time on
00:52:15Rosberg.
00:52:23No we haven't
00:52:24seen anyone
00:52:25fit into
00:52:26yet.
00:52:27No one fitted
00:52:29in.
00:52:32Fernando Alonso
00:52:33was wondering about
00:52:34enters in the
00:52:35second round of
00:52:36qualifying yesterday
00:52:37too.
00:52:38And when he saw
00:52:39what happened to
00:52:40Lewis Hamilton
00:52:41he was glad he
00:52:42didn't go out on
00:52:43them.
00:52:44Well Lewis Hamilton's
00:52:45tires must be
00:52:46getting a bit
00:52:47shot by now.
00:52:48Up to second
00:52:49spot.
00:52:50This is not too
00:52:51shabby for 15th on
00:52:52the grid.
00:52:53No.
00:52:54Considering that
00:52:55T.B.
00:52:56Raikkonen who
00:52:58has been here
00:52:59recently.
00:53:03Nick Heidfeld
00:53:04and T.B.
00:53:05Raikkonen battling.
00:53:06It's like Raikkonen
00:53:07will go down the
00:53:08inside.
00:53:09He's going to get
00:53:10him down the
00:53:11inside then.
00:53:12Of course he's in
00:53:13hot pursuit now.
00:53:14Mark Webber who's
00:53:15just made his
00:53:16stop.
00:53:17That shot of
00:53:18Raikkonen coming
00:53:19over the kerbs
00:53:20right there just
00:53:21illustrated the
00:53:22difference between
00:53:23the McLaren chassis
00:53:24and the Ferrari
00:53:25chassis.
00:53:26You can't forget
00:53:27the traction down.
00:53:28That's the key of
00:53:29coming off the
00:53:30kerbs here.
00:53:31The McLaren
00:53:32rides it so
00:53:33smoothly and
00:53:34instantly gets
00:53:35back on the
00:53:36power.
00:53:37The Ferrari
00:53:38chassis just
00:53:39can't make the
00:53:40transition.
00:53:41Boy Sebastian
00:53:42Vettel.
00:53:43I just noticed
00:53:44the stat that
00:53:45Sebastian Vettel's
00:53:46going to love in
00:53:47the post race
00:53:48debrief.
00:53:49All things being
00:53:50equal on his
00:53:51out lap.
00:53:52Three seconds
00:53:53quicker on those
00:53:54cold wet weather
00:53:55conditions.
00:53:56The fastest
00:53:57lap of a
00:53:581.34.4
00:53:59which compares to
00:54:00Massa's fastest
00:54:01lap of the race
00:54:02of a 1.34.4
00:54:03so we're down to
00:54:04the hundreds.
00:54:05Massa's
00:54:06with a
00:54:071.34.457
00:54:08Hamilton's
00:54:094.69.
00:54:10Now of course
00:54:11Massa is bottled
00:54:12up in his
00:54:13traffic.
00:54:14Not what he
00:54:15wants at all on
00:54:16his out lap.
00:54:17Just sort of
00:54:18the lock of the
00:54:19door so we've
00:54:20got Alonso
00:54:21leaving his
00:54:22train of cars
00:54:23here and Massa
00:54:24Rossberg
00:54:25going right.
00:54:26Nice pass
00:54:27again.
00:54:28The car seems to
00:54:29be unbelievably
00:54:30straight and fast
00:54:31down those
00:54:32straight laps at
00:54:33Raid.
00:54:34On that last
00:54:35lap Hamilton
00:54:36was 2.6
00:54:37seconds faster
00:54:38than Vettel on
00:54:39that last lap
00:54:40alone as you're
00:54:41right you're
00:54:42running now
00:54:43Vettel and
00:54:44Hamilton
00:54:45having got
00:54:46around
00:54:47Rossberg.
00:54:48Boy oh boy
00:54:49we have to
00:54:50keep very very
00:54:51close tabs on
00:54:52what's happening
00:54:53absolutely
00:54:54flying.
00:54:55Yeah he could
00:54:56win this race
00:54:57for 15th.
00:54:58Oh boy.
00:54:59And the weather
00:55:00could be his
00:55:01biggest ally
00:55:02after it was his
00:55:03biggest enemy
00:55:04in qualifying.
00:55:05Well they were
00:55:06their own biggest
00:55:07enemy in qualifying
00:55:08they made that
00:55:09ridiculous decision
00:55:10to do
00:55:11to go on to
00:55:12the intermediates
00:55:13and of course
00:55:14they lost the
00:55:15sweet spot
00:55:16the one
00:55:17the driest time
00:55:18of Q2
00:55:19and never got
00:55:20into Q3.
00:55:21Well we didn't
00:55:22expect that
00:55:23to rain harder.
00:55:24Maybe they did.
00:55:25Let's listen.
00:55:26I think that
00:55:27Hamilton is
00:55:28stopping in
00:55:29free laps.
00:55:30Hamilton is
00:55:31stopping in
00:55:32free laps.
00:55:33So the Toro Rosso
00:55:34team obviously
00:55:35thinks Hamilton
00:55:36is the guy
00:55:37they're racing.
00:55:38Here comes
00:55:39Timo Glock.
00:55:40Yeah they're
00:55:41thinking exactly
00:55:42what we're
00:55:43thinking.
00:55:44Be aware
00:55:45of Hamilton's
00:55:46face.
00:55:47Hamilton sets
00:55:48fastest lap guys
00:55:49as we're
00:55:50watching Glock
00:55:52We take a lot of
00:55:53flack sometimes
00:55:54in the chat room
00:55:55about pointing
00:55:56out
00:55:57Lewis Hamilton's
00:55:58strengths
00:55:59and his successes
00:56:00but when a guy
00:56:01does things like
00:56:02this how can you
00:56:03not?
00:56:04Absolutely.
00:56:05Talking about
00:56:06people or cars
00:56:07or engineers
00:56:08that are doing
00:56:09things that
00:56:10others aren't
00:56:11well that's worth
00:56:12talking about
00:56:13in my opinion.
00:56:14If Hamilton
00:56:15does stop
00:56:16when the STR
00:56:17crew predicted
00:56:18in three laps
00:56:19that will be
00:56:20halfway we have
00:56:21to be careful
00:56:22of how much fuel
00:56:23I hope we see how
00:56:24much fuel goes
00:56:25into Hamilton's
00:56:26chassis.
00:56:27He could do this
00:56:28on a one-stop
00:56:29strategy.
00:56:30Remember Vettel
00:56:31has to stop again
00:56:32he has to come
00:56:33back in.
00:56:34Seven seconds
00:56:35of fuel delivery
00:56:36will get Hamilton
00:56:37the rest of the race
00:56:38distance so this
00:56:39pit stop from
00:56:40McLaren will
00:56:41be key.
00:56:44Alonso
00:56:45Kubica
00:56:46trying to get
00:56:47around Alonso
00:56:48I mean that
00:56:49driver in the
00:56:50BMW and Robert
00:56:51Kubica
00:56:52Alonso of course
00:56:53a very canny
00:56:54very tough driver
00:56:55and Felipe
00:56:56Massa
00:56:57still stuck
00:56:58there behind
00:56:59Heidfeld.
00:57:03In fact they're all
00:57:04stuck behind
00:57:05a lot of them
00:57:06Mark Webber
00:57:07and Raikkonen
00:57:08and Raikkonen
00:57:09Jarno Trulli
00:57:10has peeled
00:57:11off from B4
00:57:12but Kovalainen
00:57:13that puts Kovalainen
00:57:14back up to B4.
00:57:15One of the
00:57:16Ferraris coming in
00:57:17behind him
00:57:18from B7
00:57:25Tell you what
00:57:26those full wet tyres
00:57:27must be getting a bit
00:57:28shot with these long
00:57:29runs because it's not
00:57:30Uh oh, what's going on
00:57:31here?
00:57:32One of the crewmen
00:57:33went for his belt
00:57:36Toyota get away
00:57:38These fellas are
00:57:39good to go
00:57:40enough fuel on board
00:57:41to get them the rest
00:57:42of the race distance
00:57:45There comes
00:57:46Trulli
00:57:49Here comes
00:57:50Kimi Raikkonen
00:57:55Less than a second
00:57:56boys, less than
00:57:57one second
00:57:58That is gloomy
00:57:59I tell you what
00:58:00Vettel and the
00:58:01engineers at
00:58:02Toro Rosso
00:58:03had surely no clue
00:58:04coming into this
00:58:05weekend they will be
00:58:06discussing fuel
00:58:07tactics and strategy
00:58:08versus McLaren
00:58:09and Lewis Hamilton
00:58:10I'm sure they were
00:58:11worried about Kovalainen
00:58:12but I don't suppose
00:58:13they gave Hamilton
00:58:14another thought
00:58:15Absolutely
00:58:16Look at that gap
00:58:17come down from
00:58:18two and a half to two
00:58:19to point six
00:58:20seconds
00:58:21second to first
00:58:23He must be about
00:58:24to hit a shore
00:58:25It's gotta be dry
00:58:31As he goes
00:58:32Here we go
00:58:33Here he comes
00:58:39Okay gentlemen
00:58:41If any team knows
00:58:42how to do a perfect
00:58:43pit stop
00:58:44it is McLaren
00:58:45International
00:58:46And these boys
00:58:47right here
00:58:48less than seven seconds
00:58:49will get him
00:58:50the rest of the race
00:58:51distance
00:58:52Full wets on the car
00:58:53clean the visor
00:58:54clean the mirrors
00:58:55now a nice clean
00:58:56release
00:58:57and away
00:58:59Struggling for traction
00:59:00coming off that
00:59:01concrete
00:59:02but he's back
00:59:03into the pit lane
00:59:04Didn't see any
00:59:05raindrops in the
00:59:06pit lane
00:59:07in the puddles
00:59:08No
00:59:10Oh he's got
00:59:11clear traffic
00:59:12Oh boy
00:59:13Now that is a
00:59:14obviously
00:59:15very well orchestrated
00:59:16by the pit crew
00:59:17to try and get him
00:59:18in at the right time
00:59:19but sometimes it just
00:59:20doesn't always happen
00:59:21how you want it to
00:59:22happen but he's
00:59:23come out in
00:59:24absolutely clear
00:59:25traffic
00:59:26a clear road
00:59:27In tenth place
00:59:28behind David
00:59:29Coulthard is
00:59:30Lewis Hamilton
00:59:31as we watch
00:59:32some nice pictures
00:59:33from
00:59:34Is that left rear
00:59:35wheel on the
00:59:36Williams
00:59:37shuddering?
00:59:38I think it was
00:59:39going over the
00:59:40curving
00:59:41it was doing
00:59:42Yeah
00:59:43exactly
00:59:45On overrun
00:59:46Yeah
00:59:48Pretty cool though
00:59:49Absolutely
00:59:50Oh you
00:59:51see those super
00:59:52slow-mo's
00:59:53any of the wheels
00:59:54front to the rears
00:59:55go over those
00:59:56serrated curves
00:59:57you just can't
00:59:58believe how much
00:59:59the wheel wobbles
01:00:00about
01:00:01So among the
01:00:02runners on one
01:00:03stop
01:00:04Hamilton leads
01:00:05the way
01:00:06meaning every
01:00:07driver ahead of
01:00:08him has another
01:00:09stop to make
01:00:10so once again
01:00:11it's incumbent on
01:00:12Lewis Hamilton
01:00:13to stay there and
01:00:14then wait for
01:00:15everybody else to
01:00:16take themselves out of
01:00:17his way on their
01:00:18second stop
01:00:19Sebastian Vettel
01:00:20leads
01:00:21we'll be back
01:00:23Welcome back
01:00:24live to Monza
01:00:2524 laps to go
01:00:26we've had some
01:00:27interesting pit action
01:00:28Nico Rosberg came
01:00:29in in the
01:00:30Williams Toyota
01:00:31so he's obviously
01:00:32on a one-stop
01:00:33strategy which
01:00:34means he did a
01:00:35terrific job to
01:00:36qualify fifth with
01:00:37all that fuel on
01:00:38board in the
01:00:39Williams
01:00:40He did it
01:00:41and especially
01:00:42when Raikkonen
01:00:43nearly spun in front
01:00:44when Hamilton spun
01:00:45in front of him
01:00:46down at the
01:00:47Rosia at the
01:00:48Ascari rather
01:00:49and said that he
01:00:50lost at least two or
01:00:51three tenths
01:00:52You just saw
01:00:53Vettel go out the
01:00:54bottom of your
01:00:55picture
01:00:56Here comes Heikki
01:00:57Kovalainen
01:00:58These drivers will
01:00:59have a second
01:01:00stop to make
01:01:01and so what's on
01:01:02their mind right
01:01:03now I suspect
01:01:04Peter Windsor
01:01:05is the weather
01:01:06Well that's right
01:01:07Bob and we did
01:01:08hear that transmission
01:01:09to Fernando Alonso
01:01:10saying more rain
01:01:11but at least it's
01:01:12barely raining and
01:01:13it's much brighter
01:01:14now than it's been
01:01:15all afternoon and
01:01:16if you are expecting
01:01:17another pit stop
01:01:18you'd be thinking
01:01:19quite seriously about
01:01:20switching to
01:01:21intermediates
01:01:22Yes absolutely
01:01:23we see Alonso
01:01:24dive into the
01:01:25pits now it'll be
01:01:26interesting to see
01:01:27what Renault's
01:01:28strategy is here
01:01:29Now they're taking
01:01:30a wing adjustment
01:01:31and Inter's going
01:01:32on the car
01:01:33well this is key
01:01:34guys right here
01:01:35we're talking about
01:01:36the weather and
01:01:37following up from
01:01:38what you were
01:01:39saying Peter
01:01:40as the line begins
01:01:41to dry Inter's
01:01:42will be the way
01:01:43to go
01:01:44now thinking back
01:01:45to Hamilton's
01:01:46situation versus
01:01:47Vettel
01:01:48Vettel has another
01:01:49stop to do
01:01:50so he can change
01:01:51to Inter's
01:01:52and there's no
01:01:53question if the
01:01:54track dries
01:01:55Inter's will be
01:01:56faster
01:01:57if it starts to
01:01:58rain and
01:01:59Hamilton will be
01:02:00praying it does
01:02:01so there's no
01:02:02question that the
01:02:03full wets will be
01:02:04the way to go
01:02:05be very interested
01:02:06in the next few
01:02:07laps to see how
01:02:08this pays out
01:02:09wet tyres
01:02:10yeah already
01:02:11just only 3 or 4
01:02:12laps into a long
01:02:13stint and if it stays
01:02:14dry like this the
01:02:15guys on full wets
01:02:16are going to have
01:02:17an awful job
01:02:18keeping those tyres
01:02:19cool
01:02:20also during the
01:02:21break we saw
01:02:22David Coulthard
01:02:23and the Red Bull
01:02:24Renault out there
01:02:25on Inter's
01:02:26and he straight
01:02:27lined the chicane
01:02:28down in the
01:02:29Variante del
01:02:30Retofilo
01:02:31the first chicane
01:02:32now we've seen
01:02:33Sebastian Bordet
01:02:34well excuse me
01:02:35I've said we haven't
01:02:36I've seen it on
01:02:37timing and scoring
01:02:38which tyres
01:02:39have fitted
01:02:40which tyres
01:02:41whether they've
01:02:42gone on to the
01:02:43Inter's or the
01:02:44full wets
01:02:45because the
01:02:46information of
01:02:47Bordet's car will
01:02:48be critical
01:02:49to the pit stop
01:02:50for Vettel
01:02:51if Bordet says
01:02:52yes the Inter's
01:02:53are the way to
01:02:54go guys
01:02:55you can put our
01:02:56team mate
01:02:57put Vettel on
01:02:58them
01:02:59well that's
01:03:00terrific information
01:03:01for the team
01:03:02they're going to
01:03:03want to keep
01:03:04an eye
01:03:05as I mentioned
01:03:06David Coulthard
01:03:07is the
01:03:08tenth
01:03:09of this case
01:03:10you may have
01:03:11heard me talk
01:03:12about
01:03:13Giorgio
01:03:14Ascanelli
01:03:15who's now
01:03:16running the
01:03:17technical department
01:03:18of Toro Rosso
01:03:19he is one of
01:03:20the most
01:03:21experienced
01:03:22engineers in
01:03:23Formula 1
01:03:24today
01:03:25he has been
01:03:26Ayrton
01:03:27Senna's
01:03:28engineer
01:03:29at McLaren
01:03:30he has
01:03:31worked with
01:03:32Gerhard
01:03:33Berger
01:03:34at Ferrari
01:03:35he has

01:19:05oh boy
01:19:06well, we've just heard the
01:19:07Toro Rosso
01:19:08team
01:19:09telling Sebastian Vettel
01:19:10that rain drops
01:19:11are on the way
01:19:12Steve, would you
01:19:13venture a guess
01:19:14that somebody
01:19:15might think about
01:19:16dry tires
01:19:17before we're
01:19:18done?
01:19:19I think it's
01:19:20I think it's
01:19:21too late for it
01:19:22ok, yeah
01:19:23I recall in78
01:19:24Spa
01:19:25a week ago
01:19:26when it
01:19:27started to
01:19:28rain
01:19:29and Nick
01:19:30Heidfeld
01:19:31jumped into
01:19:32the pits
01:19:33back live at Monza watching Robert Kubica got a piece of racetrack all to
01:19:40himself now we go on board with Felipe Massa's Ferrari running in sixth place
01:19:44Lewis Hamilton just ate up Felipe Massa to get right to his gearbox that hasn't
01:19:50been able to do anything with him since he got there. No, he's strained he's
01:19:54dropping back if anything and he had him right lined up in his sights
01:19:59because he needs to get by because he's got a two-point lead going to this race
01:20:02but if Massa gets around Heidfeld in front of him there, it'll become one-point
01:20:07No, it'll become two if Massa makes the pass. There's Jenson Button, his teammate Rubens
01:20:14Vatikello has also made a late pit stop. Is he on dry tires? Well, it seems very
01:20:23late for a pit stop for Honda. I wonder whether or not Bob that Honda have been
01:20:27listening to what what you were just asking me is it too late to go on to
01:20:31dry tires? Well, we haven't really got an awful lot to lose quite frankly let's see
01:20:34but I don't know I didn't see what tires went on the car. Also while we were in
01:20:41break, Kimi Räikkönen set fast lap of the race at 1.32.595
01:20:47but he remains mired in tenth place. Well, I can tell you I've just had a look at
01:20:54that pit stop from Honda. They had dry weather tires ready to go but they did
01:20:58put the car on inters. They chose to keep him on inters. There's Nick Heidfeld, his
01:21:04teammate Robert Kubica last lap, last time under set fast lap. Now it's
01:21:09taken away by Mark Webber. The track continues to pick up speed.
01:21:16Bertl Stilden announced beyond outstanding job quite frankly. We're
01:21:21watching, we're on board with Glock here but the gap now to Kovalainen in the
01:21:26McLaren. 13.8 seconds between the Toro Rosso chassis and the McLaren MP4-23.
01:21:34It's quite remarkable. There's Kimi Räikkönen, the bright red Ferrari. He has
01:21:38just taken back fast lap. As we came out of break I told you he had done a 32.5.
01:21:42He's just done a 31.6. That's how quickly this track is picking up speed. It's
01:21:48really weird that Lewis Hamill doesn't seem to be able to pick up speed with it.
01:21:53The track is obviously getting faster and faster. His laps are remaining
01:21:56steadfastly in the 33 range. Maybe the McLaren doesn't like the intermediate
01:22:01tire as much as it does the full wet.
01:22:06Nelson Piquet is firmly in the crosshairs of the world champion. Kimi Räikkönen
01:22:12with a huge crowd of Ferrari fans willing him on. We'll take a break. Final
01:22:17one before the checkers.
01:22:20Welcome back. Five laps to go. Oh Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton. Touch wheels.
01:22:27Webber will take the chicane.
01:22:32Now does he have to give up that? Well Hamilton's just gonna go right by. Yeah
01:22:37because Hamilton really really did a nasty bit of blocking there on Webber.
01:22:40But I don't know what's wrong with him. Here we see it again.
01:22:46Hamilton just hasn't had the speed and that could have been a disaster. Yeah the last
01:22:51few laps Hamilton's pace has dropped off significantly. I wonder whether or not
01:22:55probably problems with that second set of tires on the Inters. Oh wow rubber to
01:23:00rubber. Wow that would have done the carbon fiber suspension much good on the
01:23:03McLaren. I wonder whether or not Hamilton's trying to mask a little
01:23:06problem on the car. What that would be? Well it seems to be slow in a straight
01:23:10line now. So has he knocked something off some aerodynamic piece gone? Or is his
01:23:16engine going? Well I wonder whether or not he's out to just throttle back a
01:23:19little bit. Now Massa's ahead on the road. If Webber gets by
01:23:24Hamilton Massa becomes the world championship leader. And while this is
01:23:28going on Kimi Raikkonen as has become his trademark this year is setting down
01:23:33fast lap after fast lap. He did it six races in a row I believe. He set the fast
01:23:39lap of the race in the closing laps and it looks like he might do it again today
01:23:42in Monza. He's down to a 1.30.130. Talk about setting fastest laps. Oh Vettel's
01:23:49not hanging around either. His last time through the speed trap to 31.6 and he is
01:23:53now fastest through sector one. 29.1 with just four laps to go. Vettel and the STR
01:23:59chassis are just flying around here. Absolutely now he's 14 seconds in front
01:24:04of the Hakiko Valainen.
01:24:11Kimi Raikkonen. Fastest lap again. You're right. You're talking about Raikkonen's pace in
01:24:16the closing stages. 29.844. Another fast lap for Raikkonen. If he gets it it'll be
01:24:22his ninth of the year. That's just one short of the all-time record for a
01:24:26single season. Back in 1985 this team came into being as minority. In 2006 they
01:24:33became Toro Rosso using Ferrari power. Wouldn't you love to hear from Adrian
01:24:38Newey who designed the Red Bull chassis which became the Toro Rosso chassis
01:24:42about why these guys are so much more effective than the Red Bull Renaults.
01:24:47Well effectively it is exactly the same chassis. What Toro Rosso are using here
01:24:51is the same chassis what Red Bull are using. The biggest difference as you
01:24:56rightly say Bob there is the Ferrari engine.
01:25:00He's got to keep it together. Three more laps. I think it was okay. I wonder whether or not we just heard a wrong shift there or something just on that on-board.
01:25:19I heard the microphone breaking up. The engine is a new engine. It's only one race distance on the on the Ferrari lump in the back of the Toro Rosso.
01:25:30Kaz Nakajima touched by David Coulthard. Another incident for David Coulthard.
01:25:38Oh my. Boy that was a bit unfair. Now we've got debris in the Parabolica
01:25:47corner and we've still got two laps to go when Sebastian Vettel goes by. Wow this
01:25:52caught Red Bull on the hop. You can see that the guys dash out. They do have a
01:25:56wing ready. It's like Kaz Nakajima will not get back to the Williams pit. He may be
01:26:01beached in the gravel. I'd like to see a replay of that. There you go.
01:26:08Kaz Nakajima. I thought he turned in fairly early and pow. Oh boy. I think Kaz
01:26:17Nakajima came down on David Coulthard really. David Coulthard was pretty much
01:26:21on the inside of the road. David Coulthard did not seem to change direction and Kaz
01:26:26came down and rather prematurely. Now this is the scene of the crime with that
01:26:30debris in the road. There's Massa.
01:26:43Oh if Massa gets a puncture now or Vettel or Hamilton.
01:26:49The whole story line could change. On board with Vettel. Here comes the warning I bet.
01:26:55Update on the weather. A few drops possible. A few drops possible. Possible debris. Possible debris in the last corner.
01:27:07I'm amazed at the engineers at Toro Rosso remaining so calm. So controlled because this is just wow that was a big
01:27:17incident right there. That's not possible debris. I would have thought they would have told him to keep it
01:27:22tight on the tight line through the last corner there. Yeah. Well that's the kind of thing. Not worried about the fact that it might
01:27:27rain. The injury of the driver coming behind too.
01:27:32Hamilton seems to have come to life again now. He's right up with, he's pulled away from Mark Webber who pulled him up hand over foot.
01:27:40The gap now Vettel to Kovalainen first to second 13.7
01:27:48This is quite remarkable. Absolutely remarkable. Final lap for Sebastian Vettel. In qualifying the unseated Fernando Alonso is the
01:27:58youngest ever Formula One pole winner and he can do the same on this Sunday in September by becoming the youngest ever winner of a
01:28:07Formula One World Championship points race. I bet in the pits right now you could hear a pin drop in the Toro Rosso garage as they look
01:28:16in the telemetry, looking at the suspension, the brakes, the oil temperature of the engine, anything. This car just has to do one lap.
01:28:24That's all that's required of it and it will be the most famous car in Toro Rosso history. The last non-manufacturer based team in
01:28:31Formula One to win a race was back in 2003 when Giancarlo Fisichella got a belated victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix in a
01:28:39Jordan Ford. Boy oh boy they are taking the fight to McLaren International. They are taking the fight to Ferrari in their own
01:28:48backyard. The tiny junior red bull team. They ought to have given money that once it dried out this much that McLaren would have just
01:28:56eaten him alive. McLaren and Kovalainen and they just couldn't make it down to the Parabolica for the last time. Where that debris is.
01:29:04This track has seen so much history over the years. Today began with a tribute to Ronnie Peterson, a three-time winner of the Italian
01:29:11Grand Prix and now a new page is written as 21-year-old Sebastian Vettel wins his first Formula One victory and the first for his team.
01:29:24Thank you Kovalainen. A dutiful second but I think the Finn expected more today and the team expected more of him. And Robert Kubica who
01:29:36took his first career podium here at Monza will finish third. Nick Heidfeld finishes in the points. That will help BMW Sauber consolidate
01:29:47third place in that championship. Fernando Alonso fourth unofficially. This ought to be good.
01:29:54You have won the Italian Grand Prix. You have won the Italian Grand Prix. I'm proud of you. Bravissimo. Impressionante.
01:30:05I don't know what to say. I miss the words. Grazie mille. Grazie mille. Ungara. Perfetto. Thanks. Wonderful race. Great job. Yes!
01:30:18You knew that was coming. Oh man. The guy I just telestrated there was the engineer I was talking about, Giorgio Ascanelli, which has come to this
01:30:27team, taken control of it and turned things around. But boy, driver, chassis, engineer combination. You've just done a fantastic job.
01:30:35And that radio transmission to Vettel hit it right on the head. Now we're not talking about with all due respect to Bahrain or someplace like that.
01:30:43You're taking your first Formula One victory in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Absolutely. One of the hallowed grounds of all racetracks around the world.
01:30:53Just an amazing feat. Something he will never forget. Nor perhaps will we. And a final note, Kimi Raikkonen gets fast lap of the race on the very last lap.
01:31:04His ninth. We'll be back. Speed's coming.
01:31:09There is an historic moment as we welcome you back live to Monza. The Italian Grand Prix is now over and it has yet another historic winner in Sebastian Vettel and the Toro Rosso Ferrari team.
01:31:24Look how diligently he's putting the padding back and the steering wheel on the car, treating it with such respect.
01:31:31Well, you know, was there ever any doubt when this kid climbed into an unfamiliar BMW Sauber car at the U.S. Grand Prix at Indianapolis, replacing Robert Kubica, who was injured?
01:31:41And all he did was go out and score points as the youngest driver to do that in Formula One.
01:31:46There's two of the first time winners this year, Robert Kubica in Canada, now Sebastian Vettel here in Italy.
01:32:00And don't forget Heikki Kovalainen. Three first time winners this year.
01:32:07Well, you know, when Michael Schumacher retired a couple of years ago, we thought, well, that's the end of Formula One as we know it, you know.
01:32:14But I mean, Lewis Hamilton coming on the scene last year and this year and Vettel and Kovalainen and these guys, Robert Kubica, who's just an amazing driver.
01:32:24Well, they took the fight to the best in the world and the best in the world were found wanting.
01:32:29Unbelievable result for Toro Rosso at Monza.
01:32:33The first Italian constructor, Arturo Rosso, the first Italian constructor to win a Grand Prix other than Ferrari since the 1957 German Grand Prix when Maserati won at the hands of Juan Manuel Fanchio.
01:32:53Oh, boy, oh, boy. There's the championship standings.
01:32:57One point separates Lewis Hamilton from Felipe Massa pending the results of that International Court of Appeals decision coming up a week from tomorrow.
01:33:09But for now, this story is all about Sebastian Vettel.
01:33:15Back at Monza. What a moment for Sebastian Vettel.
01:33:21And one further historical note.
01:33:23Take a look at this podium.
01:33:24Not only three first time winners this year, but the youngest in Formula One history.
01:34:14Sebastian Vettel.
01:34:44Sebastian Vettel.
01:35:15German driver, Italian constructor winning at Monza.
01:35:32Where have we heard that one before?
01:35:33But this isn't Michael Schumacher and Ferrari, but Sebastian Vettel and Toro Rosso.
01:35:40I mean, what a day.
01:35:41I mean, the kid looks so composed at 21 years old.
01:35:44The National Anthem being played for you at this most hallowed ground of Monza Autogromo.
01:35:50Just an incredible day.
01:35:51I just he did that fantastic job in the rain yesterday to get that pole position.
01:35:56But I just never thought he'd be able to hold off Heike Kovalainen today.
01:35:59I really didn't.
01:36:00There's Gerhard Berger for a long moment there.
01:36:03There was no representative of the Toro Rosso team up there on the podium.
01:36:06Oh, Steve, you must be happy to see your old pal Gerhard Berger receive that trophy.
01:36:11I'm happy for what he's achieved with that team.
01:36:13There's no question about that.
01:36:14He deserves to have a good day today.
01:36:21I'll tell you what, Kovalainen looking pretty somber there, because he knows that he should have won that race.
01:36:26Really.
01:36:28McLaren needed him to win it.
01:36:29Well, they needed him to win it.
01:36:31And I think he should have done.
01:36:33And then, of course, Robert Kubica, their strategy just worked like a charm.
01:36:37Great when a plan comes together.
01:36:39Absolutely.
01:36:40But, I mean, all the strength of McLaren.
01:36:44And as we're talking with Peter and Hamilton at the Top of the Shop, a thousand personnel producing the McLaren chassis
01:36:51just had no response whatsoever for Vettel and the tiny little STR chassis.
01:36:56I mean, it's just incredible.
01:36:58Talk about giant killers.
01:37:00Time for the champagne.
01:37:01And look at that shot.
01:37:03That is uniquely Monza.
01:37:06Welcome back live to Monza.
01:37:08Look at all of those happy fans, Ferrari fans, Vins, people from all over the world,
01:37:14who cannot be happy with this moment for Sebastian Vettel and Toro Rosso taking victory.
01:37:19Well, of course, just outside Milan, as you said earlier on, I mean, it's a great place to have a race.
01:37:23Very easy to get to.
01:37:24Here's Peter.
01:37:25Sensational Santander Italian Grand Prix.
01:37:27Third for the BMW Saab team, Robert Kubica.
01:37:29Second for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, Heikki Kovalainen,
01:37:32and scoring his first ever Grand Prix win, youngest driver ever to do so,
01:37:36and the first win for Scuderia Toro Rosso Ferrari, Sebastian Vettel.
01:37:41Well, Sebastian, all I can say is over to you.
01:37:44Your emotions, your feelings as you looked at that crowd and you just won your first Grand Prix.
01:37:50Unbelievable.
01:37:51I mean, the whole race we had no problems.
01:37:53The car was working really fine.
01:37:55I had a fantastic race, a very good strategy.
01:37:58But, you know, all that was gone when I crossed the chequered flag, the finish line.
01:38:03And then the lap back to the pits and then the whole podium ceremony was just unbelievable.
01:38:11I mean, the people, I think, is for sure the best day of my life.
01:38:15I mean, these pictures, these emotions, I will never forget.
01:38:19I mean, it's unbelievable.
01:38:20It's so much better than you might think it is.
01:38:24It's great.
01:38:25I mean, again, I can just say a big, big thank you to all the guys working in the team.
01:38:32They did a fantastic job.
01:38:33I mean, who might have thought about that in the beginning of the season?
01:38:37We had a poor start, let's say.
01:38:39Then we got better and better.
01:38:41I mean, in these conditions, we can make a bit of our gap by a bit more effort
01:38:47or staying a bit longer full throttle.
01:38:49But, I mean, it's great.
01:38:51It's fantastic.
01:38:52I'm speechless.
01:38:53Well, let's try to fill in some of the details.
01:38:55A safety car start, pretty wet, slippery, miserable conditions,
01:38:59but fabulous for you right at the front, no visibility problems.
01:39:03Pulled out almost a second a lap, something like 12 kilometers now,
01:39:06quicker than anybody in a straight line in those early phases of the race.
01:39:10Talk us through that.
01:39:11Well, I mean, for the speed trap, I think there is an explanation.
01:39:14I mean, we didn't go on more downforce configuration.
01:39:17We were thinking it might be dry today, so we stick to the dry level and didn't touch it.
01:39:22So on the straight lines, we were very bloody fast compared to all the others.
01:39:26Obviously, being first, I mean, the safety car start helped me,
01:39:29but being first, having no visibility problems at all, I think was the key.
01:39:34And I could make a quite good gap, solid gap, about six, seven seconds to Heikki straight away.
01:39:41I mean, and then I was pushing very hard, sometimes went a bit over the limit,
01:39:45nearly lost the car.
01:39:46It was so difficult in the beginning.
01:39:48There was a lot of water, but I think it got more tricky
01:39:51when we were in the middle of the race and there was no standing water anymore.
01:39:56I mean, I think all the people went left and right and looking for some water to cool down the tyres.
01:40:02It was very, very slippery.
01:40:05Then in the last stint, I mean, I was in a very good position.
01:40:08Obviously, I stayed a bit longer than Heikki and he put the intermediate tyre.
01:40:12So I was on the radio with my team talking to my engineer and he said,
01:40:15yeah, it's fine for Inter, let's go on Inter.
01:40:18And then I think it was the right choice.
01:40:20So overall, I mean, what a weekend, perfect weekend.
01:40:24I mean, pole position, race win, unbelievable.
01:40:28I mean, I don't know what to say really.
01:40:31Well, your first podium and you win, and it's for a win.
01:40:35How did you control the race in terms of concentration?
01:40:38What was going through your mind?
01:40:39Tell us about that in the closing stages.
01:40:42Yeah, sometimes I was thinking, you know, there's still P1 on my board.
01:40:48How can it be?
01:40:49I mean, then I'm few to finish.
01:40:50There's nothing, no trouble anymore, no pit stops, nothing.
01:40:54So just keep it together.
01:40:56But then I have to say, I was extremely focused, focused every lap.
01:40:59I didn't lift and try to save the engine or save the tyres or anything.
01:41:03Of course, I was looking after my car, but I was trying to keep attention
01:41:08because obviously being, especially towards the end,
01:41:11when there was kind of a dry line throughout some corners,
01:41:15it was very, very crucial to stick on that dry line.
01:41:18Just half a metre too late or too wide, you can be off.
01:41:21So it was extremely difficult to keep up concentration.
01:41:24But in the end, I was just always trying to push
01:41:26and trying to increase the gap to the guys behind.
01:41:32Unbelievable.
01:41:34Sebastian, congratulations.
01:41:35We'll come back to you in a second for further thoughts.
01:41:38Moving on to you, Eki, congratulations.
01:41:40A strong podium finish, a good second place,
01:41:42potentially a win out there for you today.
01:41:44Talk us through the early laps and how your car was.
01:41:49Well, clearly not possible to win today.
01:41:52Sebastian and Toro have been strong here all weekend.
01:41:57I had a little bit of a problem earlier on in the race,
01:42:00in the first couple of stints, especially with the extreme wet tyre.
01:42:05And some problems also to warm up my brakes.
01:42:08So I was just struggling to find any more time and trying to go faster.
01:42:15But we kept pushing and then towards the end it got a little bit better.
01:42:22But I think it was the maximum we could do today.
01:42:24And we still got some good points.
01:42:27And we can just look forward to the next round now.
01:42:30The brake problem to which you've heard and the tyre problem
01:42:32related to the ambient and the weather conditions today
01:42:35or are we talking a mechanical issue here?
01:42:37No, I think it's related to the ambient temperature
01:42:40and how to get them working.
01:42:43And it was just a little bit difficult today.
01:42:46But it wasn't easy for anyone out there.
01:42:50I'm sure everybody had some problems with them.
01:42:53But I felt that that's where the performance was today.
01:42:57And I couldn't find it earlier on in the race.
01:43:01And just to finish that point, did this materialise at all
01:43:04during the wet practice or qualifying sessions yesterday?
01:43:08A little bit.
01:43:09But to me it felt it was a bit of a surprise
01:43:14to have that kind of problem in the race.
01:43:16Especially after a few laps.
01:43:18Normally the first few laps it might be a bit of a problem
01:43:20but then it should go away.
01:43:22And it felt more difficult for longer.
01:43:25So that was a bit of a surprise.
01:43:27Did the safety car start make that situation worse or perhaps help it?
01:43:30No, I think it helped it a little bit
01:43:33to get the temperatures up a little bit better for the first lap.
01:43:39But it's difficult to say whether it made a big difference or not.
01:43:42I think it was still going to be difficult
01:43:44whatever the start was going to be.
01:43:46Well, congratulations to you anyway.
01:43:47Very strong points finish for you today.
01:43:50And Robert, congratulations to you.
01:43:52Your helmet says it all.
01:43:53This is the circuit in which you scored your first podium finish two years ago.
01:43:56And you're celebrating that with another podium here at Monza.
01:43:59I mean, quite a good weekend.
01:44:01After yesterday's qualifying, which didn't go like we were expecting,
01:44:05we were the first car out of Qualy 3.
01:44:08So the only positive thing was that we could choose our strategy
01:44:13looking for how we would be the weather in the race
01:44:16and the condition on the track.
01:44:18I think we did the right choice.
01:44:20I stayed as long as possible until my pit stop.
01:44:24And then we were a bit lucky that the condition allowed us
01:44:27to put intermediate tyres.
01:44:29We were able to make up quite a good pace,
01:44:33closing up to Heikki, but he was too far away.
01:44:37And the last laps were just cruising, bringing the car home.
01:44:42But the start of the race was very difficult.
01:44:45I mean, I overtook Nick without seeing him.
01:44:49Suddenly I realised I was in front of him on the straight line,
01:44:52but I didn't see him at all.
01:44:54So it's not easy starting in the middle of the pack,
01:44:58in this condition, but I kept the car on the track.
01:45:01We did face some problems on the pressures on the tyres
01:45:04when the track was drying up.
01:45:07We were, I think, with Fernando struggling a lot.
01:45:10Luis kept by easy, he was much quicker,
01:45:13but I think then we were a bit lucky that we stayed longer
01:45:16so we were able to put intermediate straight away.
01:45:19Robert, talk a little bit about that helmet design,
01:45:22what it means to you, what it means to be on the podium again here in Italy,
01:45:25after which you've done so much racing in your career.
01:45:27Well, yeah, I mean, there's no secret that I have grown up as a driver and as a kid,
01:45:32most of the time in Italy, from my age, from 13 to 18 years old.
01:45:37A special place for me, Monza, after the Hungarian Grand Prix,
01:45:42where there are a lot of Polish fans, which are coming, supporting me,
01:45:46which I thank them.
01:45:48Here in Monza, there are massive Polish fans,
01:45:50but also Italians, which are cheering for me.
01:45:53That's why I just want to thank them for support,
01:45:57to thank all the people who have supported me in my career in Italy,
01:46:01all the teams, everybody who I met on my way to Formula 1.
01:46:05That's why we divided the helmet into two pieces.
01:46:08One was Italian colours, one was Polish colours.
01:46:12Yeah, that's all.
01:46:14Thank you, Robert. Congratulations.
01:46:16Sebastian, as you say, returning to you,
01:46:18if I could suggest that this is a poignant moment,
01:46:20in terms of Toro Rosso being an Italian team
01:46:23and the history of that team,
01:46:24and perhaps we could think a little bit about Minardi
01:46:26and how that team started in 1985,
01:46:28and indeed, since the first Italian, non-Ferrari Italian team
01:46:32to win a Grand Prix since 1957.
01:46:35Yeah, I think that says it all.
01:46:37I mean, you know, all the people,
01:46:39they might be used to hear the Italian national anthem,
01:46:43but for Scuderia Ferrari, as you said, it's a long time ago,
01:46:47and I think it's very, very special,
01:46:49very unique for all the team.
01:46:51I think they will never forget this day,
01:46:53as well as I won't, so incredible.
01:46:56I mean, you know, it has been so much fun
01:46:59working together with them.
01:47:01Obviously, it was difficult last year.
01:47:03I did my debut for BMW Sauber,
01:47:05and then, you know, thanks to Franz Toost, Gerhard Berger,
01:47:09and all the team and Red Bull,
01:47:12they gave me their trust and said,
01:47:14OK, we have a seat for you, take it.
01:47:16Obviously, when I started, you know,
01:47:18I've seen quite every possible angle of the grid now,
01:47:22and it's difficult when you always start from the back
01:47:25and you have to fight your way.
01:47:27You might finish a race in P15 without anyone noticing,
01:47:32but you still might have done a very good job,
01:47:35so you can still be happy, walk out of the paddock
01:47:38and be proud of yourself and your team.
01:47:40Obviously, now we can be proud of ourselves,
01:47:43celebrating a victory.
01:47:45It's great to put these words together.
01:47:48It sounds just unbelievable.
01:47:51As I said, where we started last year,
01:47:54I mean, the team, the mentality has changed so much.
01:47:57The atmosphere is fantastic.
01:47:59Everybody's extremely motivated.
01:48:01When I jumped in the car in front before the race,
01:48:04everybody said, OK, now destroy them,
01:48:07or just push like hell or whatever.
01:48:09All the guys, they were joking,
01:48:11and they were happy and looking forward.
01:48:14In that sense, you could say we had the balls to do it today.
01:48:19Obviously, then a trouble-free race, perfect pit stops,
01:48:22you may not forget.
01:48:24Compared to BMW or McLaren, Mercedes or Ferrari,
01:48:28we have not that amount of manpower at home in the factory.
01:48:33Obviously, we get a lot of help from Red Bull Technology,
01:48:36but still we have about 160 people working in Firenze,
01:48:40and I think every single one today feels very special
01:48:43and can feel very special.
01:48:45I mean, I'm one of them, so we are a big team,
01:48:49and I feel extremely happy.
01:48:51Congratulations again, and thank you very much.
01:48:54Well, for a guy who went out on lap one
01:48:56in three of the first four Grand Prix of the 2008 season,
01:49:00it's been a long and interesting road
01:49:02for Sebastian Vettel to the top of the podium.
01:49:05Welcome back to Monza, one victory down, just 90 to go,
01:49:09and Sebastian Vettel will be right there with Michael Schumacher.
01:49:12Final results of the Italian Grand Prix.
01:49:14Well, it was an amazing result for Sebastian Vettel there,
01:49:17leading from the pole.
01:49:18Who would have thought he would have won it?
01:49:20Eike Kovalainen somehow being 12 seconds off at the end.
01:49:22Kubica doing a great strategy there,
01:49:24coming out to third from 11th for Lonzo,
01:49:26his usual gritty drive into fourth.
01:49:28Nick Heidfeld hanging in there in the second BMW.
01:49:31Felipe Massa not taking that golden opportunity,
01:49:33in fact, only finishing one spot in front of Lewis Hamilton
01:49:36and two spots in front of Webber.
01:49:38Two to 14th, Kimi Räikkönen and the other Ferrari at Monza,
01:49:41out of the points in P9.
01:49:43Nelson Piquet, Jr., Pireno down there in 10th,
01:49:45Nico Rosberg, Pireno down there.
01:49:47Then Jenson Button for Honda,
01:49:49David Coulthard for Red Bull right down the bottom.
01:49:51Giancarlo Fittich-Keller with that wing problem, P20.
01:49:54And now there are four to go.
01:49:56There you see the points.
01:49:57Look at that, one point between Hamilton and Massa.
01:49:59Robert Kubica keeps himself right in the fight there.
01:50:02Kimi Räikkönen scored no points again.
01:50:04Heidfeld got points there.
01:50:05Kovalainen got a lot of points.
01:50:07Alonso got points.
01:50:08Jarno Trulli got points.
01:50:09And look at that, in 9th in the championship standings now,
01:50:12Sebastian Vettel, only three points behind Jarno Trulli.
01:50:15Timo Glock there with 15.
01:50:17Nelson Piquet still on 13.
01:50:18Rubens Barrichello.
01:50:20There you see the rest of the runners.
01:50:21Sebastian Bordet, the unluckiest guy on the grid today.
01:50:24And in the Constructors' Championship,
01:50:26well, Ferrari out there in front, 134.
01:50:28But boy, is it getting close.
01:50:30McLaren Mercedes, 129.
01:50:32BMW Saab, 117.
01:50:34Solid there in 3rd.
01:50:36Then Toyota and Renault.
01:50:37Look at those fellows.
01:50:38Locked on 41.
01:50:39And Toro Rosso jumped from 8th to 6th
01:50:42over Red Bull Renault in 26th.
01:50:44Right down the bottom, Force India yet to score.
01:50:47And now the teams will pack up
01:50:49and head to the second new circuit on this year's calendar.
01:50:52Singapore.
