00:00In August 2005, an old woman named Daisy is at the hospital because she doesn't have much
00:04time left.
00:06Although she's clearly in pain, she hears the train and tells her daughter Caroline
00:09the story of how they built the station back in 1918.
00:12After losing his son in the war, a blind clockmaker put all his energy into making a wonderful
00:16clock that was hung on the station the day of the inauguration.
00:19When the clock was revealed, everyone was shocked to see it was running backwards.
00:23The clockmaker explained that he made it that way as a memorial for those who lost their
00:26sons during the war, so they could hope to see them come back.
00:29Afterward the clockmaker was never seen again.
00:32Then Daisy asks Caroline to get a certain diary from her bag and read it to her.
00:35The diary belongs to Benjamin Button and the first entry starts in 1985, explaining that
00:40sharing his story is his last will.
00:42It all starts in 1918 right after World War I ends.
00:45While everyone celebrates outside, Thomas rushes to check on his wife, who dies after
00:49giving birth.
00:50Then Thomas checks on the baby boy and is horrified by what he sees.
00:54Panicking, he grabs the baby and rushes out of the house.
00:57The baby won't stop crying as Thomas runs to the river, where he considers drowning
01:00the baby.
01:01However a cop sees him and starts chasing him.
01:04Thomas runs as fast as possible and hides in Dark Street, where he sees a pretty house.
01:08He abandons the baby on the steps together with all the money he can find in his pocket.
01:12While Thomas leaves, a couple comes out of the house and accidentally steps on the baby,
01:16making him cry.
01:17Queenie opens the blanket and discovers the baby looks like an old infant.
01:20Her boyfriend thinks they should go to the police, but Queenie picks the baby up and
01:23takes him to a room, hiding him in her drawer.
01:26Then she calls a doctor, who examines the baby and discovers many issues, nearly blind
01:30from cataracts, arthritis, and osteoporosis.
01:33The doctor doesn't think the baby will survive for long.
01:36Queenie decides the baby is a miracle and decides to keep him, so she goes upstairs
01:40and introduces him to the tenants of the retirement home she works in.
01:43She calls him Benjamin and says he's her sister's child.
01:46The elders aren't scared by Benjamin's looks and find him cute.
01:49However Benjamin is strong and doesn't die as the doctor says.
01:52As years pass, his body grows although he still looks like an old man.
01:56Because he lives in a retirement home, he doesn't find his own looks weird, he just
01:59thinks he looks like everyone else.
02:01He calls Queenie mama and depends on her to do lots of things, like bathing.
02:05He learns how to read but he can't walk and is confined to a wheelchair.
02:09Sometimes he would get curious about the kids in town, but Queenie wouldn't let him leave
02:12the house.
02:13The only times Benjamin gets to leave is to go to church.
02:16One evening, Queenie asks the priest for help.
02:18He claims to heal Queenie's infertility, then he theatrically tells Benjamin to walk again.
02:23After lots of effort, Benjamin stands up, only to fall.
02:26The priest encourages him to try again and Benjamin manages to take a few steps.
02:30At that moment, the priest falls dead.
02:32Time continues to pass and Benjamin's body becomes a little healthier.
02:35One day he meets Pygmy, who drags him out of the house for some fun.
02:39Benjamin takes the streetcar for the first time and is amazed by all of Pygmy's stories.
02:43They have a drink together near the lake and bond for a while.
02:46Afterward Pygmy leaves him because he has an appointment, and Benjamin misses the last
02:49streetcar so he must walk home on his crutches.
02:52It's nighttime by the time the makes it home and Queenie scolds him for it, but Benjamin
02:55remembers his first taste of freedom as one of the best days of his life.
02:59In 1930, Benjamin is looking a little better and can walk on a cane.
03:02They throw a Thanksgiving dinner and he gets to meet Daisy, the granddaughter of one of
03:06the tenants.
03:07They're technically the same age, so Benjamin immediately develops a crush on her.
03:11During the party, Queenie announces that she's pregnant and Benjamin feels jealous.
03:15That night, Daisy invites him to her blanket fort and they have a sweet moment together
03:18that is sadly interrupted by Daisy's grandmother.
03:21In the present, Caroline realizes that the Daisy girl from the journal is her mother.
03:25Shortly after the baby is born Pygmy leaves the city, so Benjamin starts feeling lonely.
03:29His body gets healthier every day, so he can bathe himself and eat harder food thanks to
03:33better teeth.
03:34A new tenant also teaches him how to play piano since his hands don't have arthritis
03:38anymore.
03:39He often goes to the docks to watch the boats and one day he hears Captain Mike asking for
03:42help.
03:43Benjamin volunteers to take the job and becomes the boat's janitor.
03:46It's a menial job, but Benjamin loves it.
03:49He quickly befriends Mike, who freaks out when he hears that Benjamin has never been
03:52with a woman, thinking he's very old.
03:55Mike takes him to a naughty house and shows off his tattoos while sharing stories of his
03:58youth, involving one with wonderful hummingbirds.
04:01The working ladies find Benjamin's appearance disgusting, but one of them agrees to give
04:04him his first time.
04:06Benjamin shocks her by revealing the vigor of a teenager and even wears her out.
04:10He promises to come see her often and on his way out, he's seen by Thomas.
04:14On the street, Thomas approaches Benjamin and offers him a ride.
04:17They end up going to a bar and Benjamin has his first taste of alcohol.
04:20They drink and talk until the bar closes, then Thomas drives Benjamin home.
04:24Queenie scolds him again and Benjamin pukes through his first hangover.
04:28Sometime later while a tenant is cutting his hair, she comments on how he appears to have
04:31more hair now.
04:33Benjamin concludes he's actually becoming younger every day.
04:35Whenever Daisy comes to visit her grandmother, Benjamin spends time with her.
04:39One morning he takes her to the boat and convinces Mike to take them on a ride.
04:43They have a great time and watch a cruise ship pass by, prompting Daisy to wish she
04:46could be on a ship like that.
04:48In 1936 Benjamin is 17 and decides it's time to leave home.
04:52After he shares a heartfelt goodbye with Queenie, Daisy makes him promise he'll always write
04:55to her.
04:57Benjamin takes a job in Mike's tugboat and in the present, Caroline finds all the postcards
05:00he sent to Daisy through the years.
05:02Benjamin travels from harbor to harbor all over the world and befriends the crew, who
05:05become like a family to him.
05:07He also feels stronger and younger by the day.
05:10He often gets letters from Daisy, who is studying in New York to become a ballet dancer.
05:14In 1941, the boat gets hit by a heavy snowstorm as they arrive in northern Russia.
05:19They go to a bar and Benjamin sees people fighting, concluding drunkards are the same
05:23everywhere.
05:24At the hotel, Benjamin takes the elevator and meets Elizabeth, an Englishwoman unhappily
05:27married to a spy.
05:29As days pass in Russia, the cold makes it hard for Benjamin to sleep and one night he
05:32comes downstairs to find Elizabeth, so they share some tea.
05:36Elizabeth shares all kinds of stories about the places she's visited and they stay up
05:39late just chatting.
05:40They start meeting every night to talk, growing closer.
05:43In the present, Caroline finds a postcard in which Benjamin says he fell in love and
05:47Daisy remembers the heartbreak she felt when she got that postcard at school.
05:51As nights pass, Elizabeth introduces Benjamin to all kinds of new experiences like caviar
05:55and vodka.
05:56She also shares that when she was 19 she tried to become the first woman to swim the English
06:00Channel, but she gave up before she could finish.
06:03Benjamin comforts her and they end up kissing, which is another first for Benjamin.
06:06The following night, they go out for a walk and agree on rules to start an affair, like
06:10never using the word love.
06:12From then on, they spend every night in Benjamin's room getting naughty.
06:16After a few days, Benjamin comes downstairs to discover Elizabeth has left.
06:20The next morning, Mike announces that the Japan has bombed Pearl Harbor and that he's
06:23been hired by with the US Navy to support the war effort.
06:26The cook decides to quit and be with his wife, so Benjamin takes over his job.
06:31When he returns to his room to pack, he finds a note from Elizabeth that only says it was
06:34nice to have met you.
06:36During the war, the tugboat's job is to tow crippled ships and scraps of metal, so they
06:40never see the actual battles.
06:41A soldier is assigned to the boat to watch over them and Benjamin enjoys his stories.
06:45The guy gives Benjamin all his money, asking him to give it to his wife if something happens
06:49to him.
06:50That night the crew hears a bell and sees fire in the distance.
06:53A transport carrying over a thousand men was split by a torpedo and Benjamin's boat is
06:57the first one on the scene.
06:58Unfortunately an enemy submarine is nearby and the crew decides to bring it down.
07:02The enemy opens fire on them and the soldier and the boat immediately starts firing back,
07:06buying them some time as the boat makes its way to the submarine.
07:09With a quick crash, they make it explode and sink.
07:12Sadly there's no time to celebrate because the whole crew has been hit by bullets and
07:15Benjamin has to say goodbye to Mike before he dies.
07:18The next morning Benjamin is rescued by the allies and when he throws a lifesaver from
07:22the boat to the sea, a hummingbird appears around it.
07:25Mike used to love hummingbirds and Benjamin realizes they usually don't appear at sea.
07:29He also sends the soldier's money to his wife as requested.
07:32In 1945 when Benjamin is 26, he returns home looking 50.
07:36He reunites with Queenie and gets to see his sister as a teenager.
07:39Unfortunately he also learns that his mom's boyfriend died a few months ago.
07:43Benjamin begins living there again and plays the piano for the elders, recognizing a few
07:47old faces.
07:48One morning Daisy, who is now a young woman, comes to visit her grandmother and at first
07:52she doesn't recognize Benjamin.
07:54When she finally does, she runs to hug him and scolds him because he stopped writing.
07:58They reminiscence over the old times and decide to go to dinner together.
08:01During the whole meal, Daisy keeps on talking and Benjamin realizes their worlds are very
08:05different now, he's also surprised she smokes.
08:08Then they go to the lake and Daisy shows off her dance moves before kissing Benjamin, inviting
08:12him to do the dirty.
08:13Benjamin feels confused and turns her down so Daisy soon returns to New York.
08:17As weeks pass, Benjamin keeps getting younger and stronger.
08:20One night Thomas comes to see him while walking with a crutch because of an infection in his
08:24foot.
08:25The men go to dinner and Thomas admits he's sick, so he doesn't have much time left.
08:29Afterward Thomas takes Benjamin to his button factory and shows him around before finally
08:32confessing he's his father.
08:34He apologizes for abandoning him and shows him a picture of the family at his home, explaining
08:38what happened to his mom.
08:40Thomas wants to leave everything to Benjamin before dying, but Benjamin can barely deal
08:43with this news and leaves.
08:45After thinking a lot about it and hearing Queenie's complaints, Benjamin decides to
08:48go back to Thomas and they visit the lake.
08:51They watch the water together and find peace with their past before Thomas dies.
08:55Queenie goes with Benjamin to the funeral and he assures her she's still his mom.
08:58In 1947 using Thomas' money, Benjamin travels to New York to see Daisy at the theater and
09:03is very moved by her performance.
09:05After the play is over, he goes backstage and Daisy is very shocked to see him.
09:09She behaves very awkwardly and turns down his invitation to dinner, but she invites
09:13him to come out with her friends.
09:14At the dance club, Benjamin can't stand seeing Daisy with her new boyfriend and leaves.
09:19Daisy goes after him and explains she couldn't stop her life just because he came, and Benjamin
09:23lets her go.
09:24In the present, Daisy explains that Benjamin had visited to tell her about his father and
09:28she had been so wrapped up in her own world that she failed him.
09:31She also reveals that she was the first American to be invited to dance with the Bolshoi Ballet.
09:35Afterward Daisy joins a ballet company in Paris but still thinks about Benjamin, who
09:39still helps around the retirement home.
09:41One day he receives an urgent letter telling him Daisy has been hit by a taxi.
09:45Benjamin immediately flies to Paris to visit Daisy at the hospital.
09:48The car crushed Daisy's right leg, meaning her dancing career is over.
09:52Daisy notices Benjamin now looks young and handsome, even perfect.
09:56She feels ashamed of being seen like this and asks him to stay out of her life.
10:00Benjamin leaves the hospital but stays in Paris for a while to look out for her.
10:03In the present Daisy admits she never knew that.
10:06Eventually Benjamin leaves Paris and decides to go sailing on Thomas' boat.
10:10He never forgets about Daisy, but he still has fun nights with a bunch of other women.
10:14He also gets a bike and goes on long rides on his own.
10:17In 1962, Daisy appears at Queenie's to see him.
10:20They share a hug and after catching up, they finally have their first time together without
10:23being weird because they look the same age.
10:26Afterward they start traveling together, enjoying a wonderful life in each other's company.
10:30When they finally return home, Benjamin is devastated to hear that Queenie died.
10:34They attend her funeral for a final goodbye, then the couple decides it's time to start
10:38over.
10:39Benjamin sells Thomas' house and buys a duplex for their new life.
10:42They have lots of fun working together to build something that belongs to them and enjoy
10:45watching the Beatles on TV for the first time.
10:48Their neighbor is a physical therapist and Daisy takes the advice to start going to the
10:51pool.
10:52However seeing other women's perfect girls make her upset.
10:55Benjamin is there for her and eventually she decides she needs to drop the self-pity,
10:58so she opens a dance studio and teaches little girls.
11:01One evening, Benjamin visits her at the studio and Daisy drops big news, she's pregnant.
11:06Benjamin has mixed feeling about the idea because he's afraid the baby will be like
11:09him and that he won't be able to be a good father considering his de-aging.
11:13One evening at a dinner, Benjamin sees on TV that Elizabeth, now 68, has become the
11:17oldest woman to swim the English Channel.
11:19A few months later, Daisy gives birth to a healthy baby and names her Caroline after
11:23Benjamin's birth mother.
11:25In the present, Caroline realizes Benjamin is her real father and Daisy remarried after
11:28Benjamin.
11:29Upset, Caroline rushes out of the room to have a smoke, but a nurse scolds her and sends
11:33her back.
11:35Baby Caroline grows strong and healthy, but Benjamin is still worried about becoming a
11:38kid and asks Daisy to get a proper father for Caroline when the time comes.
11:42He even wants to leave before Caroline can remember him not to break her heart.
11:46Daisy protests, but Benjamin points out she can't raise both of them.
11:50After Caroline's first birthday, Benjamin sells all of Thomas' properties and puts the
11:53money in a savings account for Caroline.
11:56Then he leaves in the middle of the night without saying a word.
11:59In the present, Caroline finds postcards from Benjamin addressed to her for every single
12:02birthday, apologizing for not being there for her.
12:06Benjamin starts traveling the world, taking odd jobs here and there to enjoy life as much
12:09as he can.
12:10One night, Benjamin comes to the dancing studio looking like a man in his twenties.
12:15Daisy pretends he's an old friend in front of Caroline, who doesn't recognize him.
12:18The moment is interrupted by Daisy's new husband, who is polite but senses the awkwardness so
12:22he takes Caroline away.
12:24Daisy notices how young Benjamin looks and admits he was right, she couldn't have raised
12:28two teenagers.
12:29Then she leaves with her family, saying goodbye to Benjamin for supposedly the last time.
12:33However Daisy shows up at his hotel later and they share one last naughty night.
12:37In the present, Caroline realizes she did meet Benjamin, remembering that night.
12:42This is also the last thing he wrote.
12:43On the TV, the news announce Hurricane Katrina is approaching the area.
12:47The nurse tells Caroline they can choose to evacuate, but Caroline chooses to stay because
12:51she knows Daisy won't survive for long.
12:54Daisy continues the story, saying that shortly after Caroline's new dad died, she receives
12:58an important phone call.
13:00She goes to Queenie's house, which is still a retirement home being managed by her daughter.
13:04It turns out Child Protective Services has found Benjamin living in an abandoned building
13:08in New Orleans, and in his journal they've found Daisy's name and address.
13:11When Benjamin's sister says she's fine with him staying there, Daisy hears the piano and
13:15goes to check, finding Benjamin as a child.
13:18He is showing signs of dementia and doesn't remember Daisy, but she still feels connected
13:21to him.
13:22From then on, Daisy visits him often and sees how his memory fails him more every day.
13:27This makes him a very difficult child who throws tantrums and climbs to the roof.
13:31When Benjamin becomes a 5-year-old, Daisy moves to the retirement house to watch over
13:35him, slowly seeing him become smaller.
13:37Little by little he forgets how to talk and walk, becoming nothing but a baby.
13:41In 2002, they put up a new clock at the train station and in 2003, baby Benjamin gives Daisy
13:46one last knowing look before dying.
13:48In the present, the storm gets worse and an alarm rings in the area.
13:52Caroline runs to check on the situation and Daisy sees a hummingbird at the window.
13:56She says goodbye Benjamin and finally dies.
13:58The storm causes various buildings to flood and reaches the old clock hiding in a basement.
