00:22Episode 483
00:24Revelations
00:26Are you okay?
00:28Eric asked Emma after they entered the television station's headquarters. She nodded and gave
00:33her husband a slight smile, trying her best to reassure him, in the future, we have to
00:40deal with things like this head on. We can't wait for rumors to just die down.
00:46Eric said, his tone serious. What had just happened was a wake up call for them both.
00:52You're absolutely right.
00:55This can't happen again. Emma replied. Once inside the studio, Emma sat down in the guest
01:01seat opposite the host, Diane Lafton, an entertainment journalist who was well respected in her corner
01:07of the industry. Eric was stood behind the scenes, ready to observe the entire broadcast.
01:14Emma's fans in the audience were holding up handmade signs with her name on them. Aside
01:20from demonstrating how important Emma was to Kaleidoscope, Eric's presence meant that
01:25everyone was extra polite to his star.
01:28His reputation preceded him. They knew that he wouldn't allow anyone to mistreat one of
01:34his most prized actors. A few minutes after Emma sat down, the director gave the host
01:39the signal that the cameras were rolling. She immediately sat up straight and a dazzling
01:44smile magically appeared on her face. Talking with the stars aired during prime time and
01:50had a loyal and established audience, which included a lot of film buffs with Emma as
01:55the guest. The ratings were already far surpassing other shows in the same time slot in August
02:01last year. Our guest tonight announced her comeback and wowed us all on the catwalk with
02:07her innate grace and style. To no one's surprise, she received the special contribution award
02:13at the annual model award ceremony. The host stated every step of her return to the fashion
02:19world was punctuated with difficulties. Yet she managed to navigate through these obstacles
02:26with the finesse that we've come to expect from her. However, just as she was one step
02:32away from becoming an international supermodel, she made the shocking decision to leave modeling
02:38behind and become an actress, bringing that same work ethic she had on the catwalk to
02:44her new line of work. She's also having immense success in the movie theaters. Ladies and
02:50gentlemen, would you please welcome Emma Miller? As the crowd erupted into rapturous applause,
02:58Emma considered Diane's words. She's clearly done her homework, she thought. After the
03:04applause died down, the host turned her attention back to her guest and asked. So I suppose
03:09the question we all have is, do you prefer acting or modeling? Well, Emma replied, I'm
03:16not sure you can properly compare the two careers. Sure, there are definite similarities.
03:23Both professions aim to please an audience, but they're also so different that I can't
03:27really say that I can't really say that I prefer one over the other. I do, however,
03:34enjoy the challenges that acting presents. Everyone knows that you filmed three films
03:39back to back this year, Diane said. The last two have been particularly successful. Do
03:46any of the characters you've played stand out as your favorite? Diane responded. It's
03:52difficult to choose one because I've been so lucky with my roles, but I really enjoyed
03:58playing the actress in Stupid. I'm a huge fan of the screenwriter. Wasn't the writer
04:03on that movie? Anonymous, though. Does that mean you know who it is? The host latched
04:09on to this point and was eager to get the scoop. Are you going to give us an exclusive
04:15here and reveal the screenwriter's identity? Emma glanced over at Eric in a way that suggested
04:22she might not be able to hold on to that particular secret for much longer. He simply
04:27looked back and gave her a shrug. It's my call, she realized. His name will appear in
04:34the credits of future films, Emma said with a coy smile. But you are welcome to guess.
04:41Ripples of discussion made their way through the audience, particularly among Emma's fans.
04:47For a moment, even the host fell into deep thought as she mulled over who was capable
04:53of writing such a well-crafted piece of work. But she was stumped. Stupid didn't seem to
05:00match the style of any of the screenwriters who were currently in the United States. In
05:05the end, the host gave up guessing. Can't you just put us out of our misery and tell
05:11us? It's really not that difficult to guess who I'm talking about, Emma said. She again
05:17looked toward Eric, following her gaze. Some of her fans in the audience finally came to
05:23a realization and began yelling, I can't believe it. It's Eric Roberts, isn't it? Diane raised
05:30her eyebrows in genuine surprise. Is it really him? Emma looked at the host and then back
05:36at the audience, then nodded. This is big news, the host gasped. Who would have thought
05:43that the CEO of Kaleidoscope could also moonlight as a screenwriter? Seriously, the screenplay for
05:50Stupid was so good. I know it's one of the reasons I'm such a fan of his, Emma responded,
05:56looking like the cat who swallowed the canary. She was so proud of Eric and wanted the whole
06:02world to know that her husband was capable of anything with the revelation of Stupid Screenwriter.
06:08The atmosphere in the recording studio was bubbling with excitement. However, as the
06:13interview was being broadcast, so-called evidence of Emma's duplicity was being revealed online in
06:19the form of a photo of her meeting with the A-list director. The slightly grainy photo seemed to have
06:26been pulled from the hotel surveillance system, but the shot made it clear that Emma was enjoying
06:31her chat with the well-known director. The internet was soon abuzz with accusations that she was
06:36abandoning her artistic integrity for mainstream money, that she was bound to be starring exclusively
06:42in Hollywood blockbusters from now on, and that her whole persona was phony. Of course, these kinds
06:49of discussions within celebrity fandoms were relatively commonplace, as famous names naturally
06:55attracted attention. What made this situation so unusual was how readily other celebrities joined
07:02the chorus of criticism and their readiness to drag Emma's name through the mud. This was a big
07:08deal. The film industry was just as much about networking as it was about talent. If other major
07:16names in this world would turn their back on someone, they were liable to fall off the public
07:21radar and into the abyss. Episode 484. Walking Away. Emma was still in the middle of her interview,
07:31but some of the people working on the show were following what was unfolding online.
07:35As time went on, it was clear that a large number of celebrities were now claiming that Emma was a
07:41hypocrite for pretending to be committed to working on indie movies when she was really
07:46chasing paychecks from mainstream blockbusters, wanting to turn the situation to her own advantage.
07:52Diane Lofton spoke with her director during one of the breaks about pushing their guests to talk
07:58about her next movie. In the next section of the show, it immediately became clear to Emma that the
08:04host's smile was no longer as sincere as it had been before. I'll cut to the chase here, Diane said,
08:12shifting a little awkwardly in her chair. A lot of your fans want to know what you've got lined up
08:17for your next project. Some things happened, Emma realized, having noted the change of tone in the
08:24interview. I do have something in the works, she responded. Can you tell us anything about it?
08:31What kind of role can your fans expect to see you take on next? The host pressed. Now it's my turn
08:39to cut to the chase, Emma stated with a level of bluntness that took the host aback. What you
08:46actually want to know is whether I've signed a contract with a certain director. There's no denying
08:52that there's lots of gossip, Diane replied, pressing on. It's your show, Emma said. You can ask
09:00whatever questions you want. I've already revealed that my husband wrote Stupid. Chances are if you
09:06ask me something, you'll get an answer. Seeing that Emma wasn't joking, the host took a moment to
09:12pause and glanced at her director for encouragement. The director nodded. Their ratings were already
09:19through the roof, and this was exactly what the viewers wanted to see. A tablet was quickly handed
09:25to Diane so she could stay up to speed with what was going on online. She had never done this to
09:31one of her guests before, so the opportunity to use this information to help quiz her guest was
09:37too hard to ignore. I can see here that there are dozens of celebrities claiming that you lie to
09:43hype yourself up as the next savior of the independent film market. The host gestured with
09:49the tablet to emphasize her point. What are your thoughts on that? What I want to know is what
09:55they're basing this on. Is it simply because I met with a particular director? Emma asked, with
10:02everything that's going on online. Wouldn't it be easier for you to just tell us what you plan to do
10:08next? The host countered, even though she could feel Eric stare on the back of her neck.
10:14Why don't we contact one of these other celebrities and see what's triggered them to
10:18make these remarks? Good idea, Emma said. Go right ahead. The director used his contacts to get a hold
10:27of one of the celebrities' phone numbers and made a call live in the studio. They were only brave
10:33enough to suggest something like this because their guest was apparently fine with it. She
10:38clearly had little to hide if she wasn't objecting to the situation. Eventually, someone answered the
10:45call. The host notified the person on the other end that she was in the middle of a live broadcast
10:51with Emma before trying to ask her question, but he hung up. Nobody in their right mind would speak
10:57up about this issue during a live show with millions of viewers, especially if they didn't
11:04want the abuse to be turned around on them. It didn't matter that other famous people had made
11:10the same comments. Sticking your head above the parapet usually meant you would get shot.
11:16Judging by the chanting that could be heard outside, the television station had quickly
11:21become surrounded by crowds with a lot of opinions on what Emma had allegedly done.
11:26Was any of this really necessary? Emma mused. She looked around the studio and finally settled her
11:33gaze on the host. Actually, I wanted to use my time on the show to announce an important decision
11:40that I've made as the program was live. Dozens of people were already jumping to conclusions on
11:46social media. They assumed that she was about to announce her new role in a Hollywood blockbuster,
11:52so they continued to accuse her of being a fraud. I know this decision isn't going to
11:57please everyone, particularly not my most loyal fans. Emma paused to look at the frantic faces
12:04of some of the teens who were holding up signs with her name on them. However, it's the right
12:11thing to do. I've decided to take a break from acting. Wait, what? Diane silently asked. This
12:20was the last thing I expected. The host wasn't the only one who was shocked. Those celebrities
12:27who had claimed to know what she was up to and had insulted her online had just gotten a wake-up call.
12:34They had expected her to come back at them, guns blazing with the full might of her husband's
12:39company behind her. Instead, she was simply taking a step back. Is this decision due to
12:47your disappointment in the industry? Diane asked, desperate to find out what was behind her guest's
12:54unexpected move. Not at all. I'm really satisfied with the three films I've just done,
13:02but now it's time to step back and do something different. Emma smiled and looked over at Eric.
13:10All I hope now is that everybody who claimed they knew what I was going to do next
13:15and called me a sellout will take a long, hard look at themselves in the mirror. As soon as word
13:21spread about how Emma had dealt with the accusations, the collective shock became palpable.
13:28All sorts of excuses had been expected, but an extended break from acting was never in the cards.
13:35Most people believed that she was at the pinnacle of her career, so there was no way she would do
13:40something to jeopardize it now. What they didn't realize was that Emma always took the road less
13:45traveled. Thank you so much for watching. Don't forget to subscribe to my channel, comment and like.
