00:29You sure are thoughtful, Claire said to Peter as they walked to his car with their arms around

00:34each other's waists. Hop in, he said with a grin. After opening the car door for her, when he was

00:42sure she was buckled up and ready to go, he shut the door and walked around to the driver's seat.

00:48As Janet watched Peter treat Claire so tenderly, a fire burned ferociously inside her.

00:55Although she had married a rich tycoon and stepped all over Claire throughout the years,

01:00she wasn't happy. Edward was much older than she was, and there were many things he couldn't do.

01:08There was no way that a cold and violent man like him could provide her the same warmth and excitement

01:55was injured, he couldn't possibly reveal that he had witnessed the entire scene the previous night.

02:01It's nothing, he said with a smile. You look beautiful today. He spoke from his heart.

02:08Claire was feisty. Her bright eyes were full of spirit and she seemed like a genuinely interesting

02:14person. She didn't suck up to others or try to deceive them, and she was so straightforward

02:20that she was easy to like. She was a rare breed. When have I ever not looked beautiful?

02:27She said comically, contorting her face again and laughing at Peter. By the way,

02:33where are we going today? She asked. We're attending a friend's engagement party,

02:39he replied. Don't tell me, she said as the joy drained from her face. It's your ex-manager,

02:45isn't it? I heard about your relationship with her. It's her engagement party, but there's nothing

02:51between us, he said with a sigh. Liar. She said, if there really is nothing, why would you need

02:59to bring a date to help boost your confidence? You keep zoning out too when you think about her.

03:05I'm blunt, but I'm not stupid. So, was she the one who dumped you, or did you dump her?

03:11We never dated, he said staring at the road in front of him. She's always been preoccupied with

03:25she said as she patted her heart, hitting a sore spot and letting out a soft whimper.

03:30What's wrong? He asked. I'm fine. She replied quickly, composing herself. You know, you look

03:38like an easy target for bullies, he said, and then laughed. You obviously received the short

03:44end of the stick, but you keep telling yourself that the short end is a blessing. That's because

03:49I won't let anyone get me down anymore, she said. I have had a pretty rough life, and I won't

03:56tolerate anyone else making it any more difficult. So I've heard, he replied. I also heard that you

04:03tried to run away from home once, but had to come home when your money ran out. That can't have been

04:08easy for you. Am I really that famous? She asked as she fumbled to brush her hair behind her ear,

04:15revealing a small beauty mark on her left cheekbone. He shrugged and smiled at her as

04:20he continued to drive to the party. Blair had done so many embarrassing things in the past

04:26that she could fill an entire book with them. Her mother had passed away, and her father often hit

04:32her, so she acted out to try and distract herself from her pain. Back then, everyone had seen her

04:39as a rebel, but she had made their school days a lot more entertaining with her hijinks.

04:45As the car stopped at a red light and Claire looked out the window, she asked,

04:51Did you notice that there are a lot of cameras pointed our way? Even though Peter had announced

04:56that he was leaving the music industry, he was still Pete McMillan, whether he wanted to be or

05:02not. Don't worry about them, he replied. I'm just a normal person now, not a celebrity. As soon as

05:10they get bored, they'll leave us alone. She nodded, noticing a change in his state of mind.

05:17He had become a completely different person from the Peter she had known before.

05:22Soon after, they arrived at Noel's engagement party. Pete's appearance was bound to cause a

05:27stir, since Noel had once risked her reputation for him. The story of how their relationship had

05:33deteriorated so badly was a mystery that nosy onlookers desperately wanted to solve.

05:39Isn't that Pete McMillan? a partygoer said. I think it is, another replied. He's the last person

05:47I would expect to see here today. He seems to have gotten more handsome since he last appeared in

06:32from one of the passing waiters. He then led Claire over to Noel, who was wearing a fancy

06:38white dress for the occasion. When Noel locked eyes with him, she was overwhelmed with a deep sadness.

06:46When she spotted the woman with her arm locked in his, she could barely hide her unhappiness.

06:52I can tell that she still has feelings for you, Claire said. It's written all over her face.

06:58Peter rested his arm around her shoulders, smiled at Noel and said, Congratulations. Thank you for

07:05coming, Noel said, lifting her glass to toast with him. And who's your friend here? I'm his first love,

07:14Claire replied with a grin. Peter sighed and then laughed as he saw the confident smile on her face.

07:21Why are you laughing? She asked, her smile turning to a frown. Am I not your first love?

07:28You dreamed about me from grade school until high school. That might be true, she said. But who

07:35introduces themselves like that, especially in this situation? Everyone knew that Noel came from

07:42a well-to-do family and her tall and handsome fiancé. Philippe seemed like the perfect match

07:48for a woman like her. He looked over at his fiancé, noticed that she was talking to her

07:54previous employer, and began to boil in anger as he walked over to them. I see you're back home,

08:00Pete, he said. Welcome to the party. Thank you. Peter replied with a polite smile.

08:09Congrats on your engagement. The two men had butted heads in private before, and Philippe

08:15had deliberately flaunted his victory in front of Peter. You think you're hot stuff? Stealing

08:21Noel away from me, Peter thought as he stared at Philippe. But I'm already over her. She's all

08:27yours now. Episode 546. Friends look out for each other. Is this your latest fling?

08:36Noel's fiancé? asked Peter. You sure? Get around. What kind of question is that? Claire responded.

08:44Are you deliberately trying to cause trouble? Philippe's face started to turn red as he let

08:50out an awkward laugh. You don't need to overreact, he said. I didn't mean anything by it. Maybe you

08:58could be a little more careful about how you phrase things next time. She responded, and you

09:04could start now by apologizing. I don't appreciate your referring to me as a fling or telling me that

09:10I'm overreacting. You're the one who's being a jerk here. Hey. All right. I'm sorry, he said.

09:18A little while after the incident had been resolved, Claire and Peter were standing next

09:22to each other on the edge of the lawn as they watched everybody else mill around at the

09:27engagement party. What do you think of the way I handled that guy? She asked. You make me wonder

09:34why you needed my sister to save you from Jenna at Miller Corp's annual celebration. He said,

09:41please don't remind me about Jenna, Claire said with a laugh. Quickly, though, her face turned

09:47serious. The situation was different in that ballroom here. It's obvious that Noel has feelings

09:53for you, but her fiancé is an arrogant idiot. That man needed bringing down a notch or two.

10:00I can't say I didn't enjoy it, Peter stated before taking a swig of his champagne.

10:05Claire laughed and then once again looked at the engaged couple.

10:10I'm kind of worried about her. I can't imagine she'll be happy if she marries a man like that,

10:16she said. Peter drained his drink instead of responding. One way or another, I really believed

10:23Noel would be by my side for a long time, even if it was just as colleagues, he thought. I guess

10:29I was wrong. You must have completely changed your opinion of her, right? I don't understand

10:36how you can go from having feelings for someone to being a bystander at their engagement party

10:41in just a few days. Claire saw him squirming beside her and took a deep breath. Everyone

10:48is different, though. Soon enough, the engagement party started to wind down, but not before one of

10:54the guests had the bright idea that Peter should sing for Noel. Everyone looked at them both and

11:00started to cheer, and encouraging chants broke out. Not that long ago, a request like this would have

11:07seemed quite reasonable, but now most of the guests knew that Noel had given up a lot to

11:12salvage Peter's reputation, and their relationship was now strained. Are they serious? Claire thought,

11:20seeing how uncomfortable Peter looked, he's made it perfectly clear that he's leaving that part of

11:25his life behind. I wonder if there's any way I can protect him from this kind of a scene.

11:31I'm afraid Peter only sings for me these days, but if you guys really want a song,

11:36then I'm happy to do the honors. She stated, stepping forward and taking the microphone.

11:42Her eagerness to perform led people at the party to think she must have some talent,

11:47but they cringed when she began to sing. Claire was completely tone-deaf. Many of the guests began

11:54to turn away in discomfort, but Peter faced her with a big grin plastered across his face,

11:59clearly enjoying the performance. When they had been at school together, Claire had often started

12:05fights and arguments. Looking back, he realized that she had always fought to protect someone else,

12:12never herself. She's always been ready to stand up for other people.

12:18Peter thought, appreciating her even more when she missed yet another high note.

12:23Please stop singing. One of the guests pleaded. Claire flashed Peter a grin and then handed over

12:30the microphone. She sure is full of surprises, Peter thought, clapping as she walked toward him,

12:36while everyone else breathed a sigh of relief. I'm definitely intrigued. Claire went to say

12:43goodbye to Noelle and Phillip. Now that I've worked up an appetite, I think it's time for

12:48my boyfriend and me to go get a bite to eat. Congratulations on your engagement. I hope you

12:54will be very happy together. Peter found himself admiring her devil-may-care attitude. She might

13:01just be helping out an old school friend, but that was pretty damn cool, he thought. Come on,

13:08honey. Let's go, Claire practically shouted, linking her arm through Peter's and leading them

13:15away. As the guests looked on, it was clear that Phillip had been embarrassed at this party far

13:22more than Peter. Despite his best efforts, one of the guests turned to her husband and said,

13:28she seems kind of crazy, but I like that woman. She clearly won't put up with any nonsense.

13:36Away from the party. Peter and Claire didn't know that they were being gossiped about

13:41and wouldn't have cared much as they got into the car. They both burst out laughing.

13:46You have no idea how much I enjoyed doing that, Claire said, continuing to giggle. I had no idea

13:53that your singing would be that bad. Peter replied with a grin, finding himself in a

13:59surprisingly good mood. Claire cleared her throat and began to sing the same song in her regular

14:05singing voice, which was actually pretty good. After she finished her short rendition, Peter once

14:11again made a show of clapping for her. Who knew the little girl who used to get stage fright during

14:17show and tell would one day grow up to make people's ears bleed at an engagement party.

14:23Peter said he burst out laughing and dodged a playful hit on the arm, but his feature soon

14:29softened again as he turned to face the woman next to him. I can't thank you enough for tonight.

14:36Friends look out for each other, Claire responded with a shrug. Peter suddenly felt sad. She's

14:42always been someone, one's protector. Even when we were kids, he thought, but who looks out for her?

14:49Why does no one protect her from the violence in her own home?
